- Angel of the North, created by internationally renown British visual artist, Sir Antony Gormley.
A public piece of art, it was commissioned by Gateshead Borough Council 1994, at a cost of £1m. It was eventually installed on 16th of February 1998, upon the site of a former County Durham Colliery.
The Angel instantly became one of the most viewed works of art in the world, as 90,000 motorists pass it each day, travelling on the A1M.
Constructed from 200 tonnes of steel, it rises 20 metres (66 feet) into the air and has a wingspan of 54 metres (177 feet).
I noticed one thing on my latest visit, perhaps mainly due to the social media, is how almost every visitor wants their photograph taken in front of the Angel, posing with their arms outstretched. Perhaps, so that they can spread their encounter with this northeast icon across the internet, Antony Gormley could never have envisaged this twenty years ago.
If you have never visited The Angel, then do so, on your next visit to North East of England.

Wow, that was amazing.... Thank you so much for sharing, Alan...
I almost sold this footage to RT News, as broadcast loop. They negotiated a price then when cold on me, it would have be a good days pay if it had come off, but not to be.
Well too bad it fell threw, but good for me, as I'm able to enjoy it. Very nicely done...
Nice vedio new friend here 🙋
Excellent quality as always well done
Thankyou Michael, I am pleased that you enjoyed my interpretation of the Angel.
Obviously the AON is a superb piece of art Al, but I was also in awe at the sight of the 'Giant Eggs' 1min 34secs into the vid. I believe I'm right in saying these were laid by the rather small statured & prehistoric 'Pussysmarts' bird. David Attenborough will back me up on this I'm sure. Seriously though, has the AON ever been hit by lightening? Just wondered.
Great vid mate, keep 'em coming. Jules x
Hi, you are correct about the eggs Jules. It must have been struck?, as it appears to be a major lighting conductor. Someone may get lucky one day, hopefully it is very well earthed.
Awesome mate, great interpretation and visually engaging.
Thank you.!
very nice well done . the music just wright for the clip . thanks again
I'm pleased that you enjoyed it, part of Gormley's vision was to symbolise the regeneration of the region, hence the former factory site had to be included.
Lot of regeneration gone on around Newcastle and Gateshead .
have a good weekend m8
I eventually got motivated again, just in time for Appleby in June. Thanks for commenting and liking, have a good un too! The channel has had a 1m views and over 250 subs this month, perhaps things are moving in the right direction again?
yes sure looks that way time for bed 4 me
Nice video Alan! What song did you use?
Edit: I Shazammed it and it was Farewell by Jincheng Zhang.
Thanks for your interest, I haven't a clue now, the Shazam result rings a bell though? At the time I was RUclips tracks, due to copyright issues with Sony Vegas loops etc..
What are its wings meant to represent, if anything?
Fantastic .... What is the song in final credits video?
I can't actually remember, it was from the RUclips Audio Library, I remember Venice Beach. Only because I kept the audio file. Pleased that you enjoyed the film.
Durham Telly Music found
" Venice Beach - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena"
thank you! ...
No copying, lol!
What is the song?
Days are long, from the RUclips Audio Library.
Bizarre and ugly, but mighty.. it could have been so much nice with simple changes...
And ofc it was made from taxpayers money?
A scale model of Angel of The North, created by Gormley in its development stage, is owned by Gateshead Council it alone is valued at more than the cost of the sculpture.
+Uber What's the problem mate, sad that the money wasn't spent on London instead? The North needs investment too.
