How to fix the squeaking noise on the MacBook Pro 2010

- Here is how I fixed the squeaking noise of my MacBook Pro. This noise came after i upgraded the memory, so by opening and closing the back cover, it was then not as tight as originally from the factory. I tried re-tightening the screws, putting loctite, nothing fixed it. The noise may also occur after a certain period of time without opening the back cover.
I am not exactly sure what the grounding bar is or does but many owners found this to be annoying. Regarding this issue, some did not get a helpful fix from their support technician, some got a new MacBook Pro. I simply mask the problem.
These modifications may void your warranty, consult your Apple Support technician before opening your MacBook Pro.
Just followed your directions and it worked perfectly! Thanks
now i found where the noise came from, thanks to your great clip. you are so genius. since the source of noise does not make any harm to the mbp, i decided to leave it this way and it will keep reminding me how lousy apple can be.
Notice the 2 pins that make a grounding contact with the bottom case...let's isolate those so there is no electrical connection! Thumbs up!
if you're going to cover the contact points where the grounding bar touches the metal theres no point of having the grounding bar in there because that will mean that it will no longer ground which is also bad because if theres a power surge or something your macbook is fried and it's not doing its job because of the electrical tape covering the contact points.
@sepehrseb Good point... Originally I shutdown and tried to fix the problem with the tape. Once fixed, I boot up and use the MBP. Then had the idea to make a video of this fix, so I re-opened MBP this time leaving it in sleep mode, knowing that it was only for filming purposes, I later saw while edititng the video that we clearly see the sleep mode. Good catch!
@theincredibleschalk I am glad I could help.
This sound has been driving me mad. Got the hard drive replaced a few months ago at genius bar but it didn't make a difference. However Apple let me keep my old drive though. Anyway, after starting the think the noise was by design and about to give up, found this video. took it to Mac store showed the video and they performed the tape fix(they used Kapton tape which goes up to 400 degrees) Means it now doesn't make popping sound an still under warranty from apple. Cheers Medech2012.
@Medech2012 dude this video helped me solve the problem..you don't need tape...the actual problem is that you are over tightening the screws. if you loosen all the screws and then tighten them up just enough to keep the case together the creaking goes away....you can't take that ground off or you can risk frying your computer with an electric shock.
I just dropped my MacBook off at the apple store today, if you have any warranty left bring it in! They are replacing the entire top case, over a 200.00 dollar repair, don't try this unless your warranty is out
Thank you for the help, I have the same issue and Apple has no idea what I'm talking about, tested Hard Drive and blah blah. One question, this tape you talk about does it it have to be Electrical tape?
is it normal for mac book pro to have a fan like sound where the hard rive is near the dvd player? even when your not sending files back and forth?
you must have a brokin computer mine is not brokin at all and does not make the noice
you realize that this means that your logic board is no longer grounded right. thats a very bad thing.
does this also work when the squeaking comes from the back? (near the disk drive)
and Apple would probably charge $400+ for wat you did! you rock! thanks
Lol yet another use for the worlds best invention. Electrical tape.
you did not shut down the Mac before opening it up?????
Hm, interesting. My Dad just purchased a MacBook Pro. I wonder if his makes the squeaking noise..
It's
Not squeaking because of the soft towel
@armouredhen30, I use iMovie
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!
I have kind of the same problem, I also hear that sound but it comes randomly and I don't have to push it.
@3nomusheki I think there are other grounding means other than this grounding bar. I consider this fix as masking the problem, not a definitive corrective measure. I have found that some use conductive grease on those contact points, that may be the best way.
@TheRogueMonk A SATA hard drive will always make some noise, the disks are spinning but it should not be noticeable. Yes the HD may show activity even when you are not "sending" files.
If you could check the connectivity, you would see that the main board is still grounded with the back cover.
@rjbme I have been thinking about that, I understand but if the conductive tape peels off with time and heat, it may short circuit some components, so I am not sure about conductive tape.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THAT VIDEO!
I have that problem on my four week old MBP15. Unbelievable that a 2000 Dollar expensive computer has problems like this. AND FREAKING APPLE ISSNT ABLE TO FIX IT !!??? I can't beleive!
@jjdo1205 I have been using the same "tape" for 11 months now... if it heats I will put a new one.
@MrTMAN72 The goal is to stop the friction, electrical tape does that. You could also use a band-aid :-)
You are a genius!!!!!!! Did just as you instructed and voila! Problem solved!!
@alkanmail Great! I am glad to see that it is still under warranty, thank you for sharing your experience!
If anyone still has this issue you should shim beneath the grounding bar rather than block the contacts w/ electrical tape. It's easy to simply use the tape beneath the bar which will still be grounded to through the screws.
I would suggest to find the cause, in your case the sound may come from something else.
@alkanmail Great! I am glad to see that it is still under warranty, thank you for sharing your experience!
pafalzon It is still grounded by the screws.
I was able to fix this by simply tightening the screws around the spring rather than removing it. Then I applied firm pressure to the back of my cover when I screwed the cover back on. No tape needed!
also thanks for the vid! now i know the noise isnt normal cos when i bought it to apple they said they couldn't find anything wrong
Seems like using conductive tape might be the ideal solution because I think the issue is the contacts rubbing the bottom cover.
Yeah, I had this sound too and hope it is away now :)
isn't it dangerous to not allow the case to be earthed?
I'am really thankful for your video, because as I heard this sound for the first time, I thought my brandnew macbook pro was broken. The apple store couldn't fix the sound-problem anyway...I was a little bit afraid to use tape in the battery area (of all the heat). So I set tight the both screws an till now it works ;)
i realize it is kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
Thanks for the info. Great video.
Thank you so much. This solved my problem with the MacBook Pro mid 2012 when I touch the bottomcase!
I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and I might have the same problem as you did, when you touched the bottom case did you have this sort of "tut" "tut" "tut" noise? Because when i touch the left side of the bottomcase of my macbook it makes a "tut" sound, please reply
camlkisback I don't have that problem. Did you put the screws in the right places? I tink your enclosure is not right in place. I had a 'tut tut' metalic noice only when I touch the bar above my touchpad (where the metalic pins are) I put duct tape on it and it was fixed.
Kevin Kroos I didnt unscrew my mac's bottom, maybe my screws just are a little loose, I'll take it to a genius bar and check it out, but I have to wait till next june for that because I live in India and I only visit the US once a year, so yeah
camlkisback Is there no Apple store in India? Try to unscrew the bottemplate en place duct tape where the pins are. This should fix your problem
Kevin Kroos No there is an Apple store but when I ask the people for any kind of support they look at me like I'm stupid.
