I love this episode!! When it comes to the style of video I do, the word you're looking for is "Animatic" or "Storyboard" (When it's one frame every few seconds or so). Typically in a professional animation setting, an animatic is made first to be a blueprint to help give direction on where a project is going. Animatics are a lot faster of a process than doing full animation, which is why I do it for RUclips, but I do step further into actual animation on occasion.
I love this conversation of celebrating artists of all kinds!! Thank you!

It's refreshing to not hear the "artists are born with natural talent" rant that I'm so used to. I don't think people realize how dismissive that is to how much time, work, blood, and tears goes in to perfecting a craft throughout a lifetime. Drummer, painter, poet, and everything in between.
    ❤ Love you guys

This is so true. I saw my then 7-yo (1997) do an exceptionally minimalist line art that depicted our cat sleeping (with his paws tucked under his chin) on the top part of the sofa. I was stunned as the few lines that were there were in perfect proportion. From that day I did everything to encourage their talent without interference. The one time I critiqued a piece, they were furious that I didn't just refrain from saying anything at all. Turns out they already didn't like the piece and I nailed what the problem was in one glance.
Additionally, there was one piece of art from a dark period in their life that was breathtaking. They used only red and black to convey their feelings. When I asked what they did with it since it disappeared from their portfolio, they had destroyed it. The purpose of that piece was them vomiting out the darkness and despair they were experiencing. I've never brought it up since. It is still vivid in my mind even after decades.

The fact that Skizz talked about directors as artists and passes over how he creates moments isn't lost on me (also his former job as a Project Manager). Skizz, you are an artist, an artist of time and people as opposed to charcoal or pixels. Imp is an artist of seeking the good and making others happy. I hope you two see that in yourselves! At the heart of it, art creates emotion, and you two weave real emotion, therefore you are artists.

You hit the nail on the head. “Translating” is the perfect word. Artists translate the odd, the weird, the exceptional into something everyone can see and feel and understand. Sometimes it’s to put forth what they feel into a medium that others can take in and for a moment see/feel what the artists do.

The segment about the fandom artists is making me smile so hard right now because I also happen to be one of those peeps (in fact I’m currently staring at my giant fan art wall that consists of 71 drawings I’ve made over the span of a year or two that are solely Hermitcraft, Life Series, or MCC related, whilst bouncing up and down and grinning from ear to ear) and I always get so freakin’ giddy when we’re recognized :3

For the reasons fans depict impulse with demon-like features, you got most of them! Definitely the IMPulse part, but also there's the fact that you were *literally* summoned onto the Hermitcraft server X'D Also personally I love the fact that demons have the trope of being evil, but Impulse is literally the nicest guy ever.... and then angels are supposed to be good but Skizz is a little stinker sometimes lol it's just really fun to play with and incorporate different traits into actual designs of the characters

I enjoyed listening to you try and wrap your head around how people draw. I have several friends where I look at their art and I’m like “how did you draw that?” Then other people turn to me and are like “how do you come up with these ideas and draw them?” It’s a cycle of how did you draw that? That is the best way to describe art.

My favorite thing about being an animator is seeing people smile and get excited over my work.
I made a shorter animation for impulse's season 8 factory (sadly had to be privated as it did terribly) using Jono's track for it, basically recreating what I could of Charlie and the Chocolate factory opening, and was very happy to see that it had gotten a comment from impulse, as in my current community, it's VERY rare to get one from the intended Creator. In a different world, or when my current channel fails, the backup plan is to fully dive into hermitcraft & life series animations. I have about 20 pages of ideas for both series on a notebook, just waiting for something to go terribly wrong so that it can rise from the ashes.
BTW, Thank you for that comment Impluse, it made my week at the time.

This is a sore spot for me: Robin Williams. He was suffering from Lewy Body Dementia, a devastating, incurable disease that was literally destroying his brain. After his death his doctor told his wife that the damage had already progressed so far that Robin was undoubtedly having hallucinations in addition to sleep disorders, cognitive impairment and the myriad of other brutal symptoms of the disease.
But according to his wife, he also had periods of normal brain function and was fully aware of what was happening to him. Robin was incredibly intelligent, and I fully believe that he made a decision to spare his family the further pain of watching his inevitable deterioration from the man they loved into a helpless stranger. I'm not arguing that he didn't also suffer from depression - I think that's well known. But I think in a period of lucidity he made a choice of grace for his loved ones' sakes.

57:03, animating every other frame is called, "animating on twos". You can also animate on Threes and Fours where you only animate every 3rd or 4th frame. Animating on twos is common in lower budget animations as you can still get decently smooth animation when there is little movement, but you also get a more stylized animation when there is more movement and it can all be done with half the work.

  • @cappared
    @cappared 18 часов назад +6

I think artists are good at examination - both internal and external, and that comes with a real trend toward difficult mental health. It's easier to be hard on yourself when you're a regular self- examiner, it's easier to feel hopeless about the future when you're regularly examining the state of the world to comment on it through your art. Add putting a ton of yourself into your work day in and day out, and that is a rough mental space to be in, even without any actual mental illness stacked on top.

  • @Nars_Media
    @Nars_Media 23 часа назад +10

23:17 The happening is one of my FAVORTIE movies of all time - partially because of the brutality; not because im like "ooh gore fun!!" but because of specifically when those scenes would take place. in the middle of talking to a friend, walking down the street, driving your car. Safe, normal activities and spaces were suddenly not safe anymore. It was such an invasion of safety and it hit so much harder because of it. I think a somewhat unintentional parallel would be the aftermath of trauma; someone or somewhere or something that was once safe is no longer so, and people have to be face to face with it and eventually learn to trust in this new unsafe environment/people/things.
To correlate to the subject of the podcast, i think artists are just really good at being impactful to different people. That *is* art.
43:02 i've seen references (for the Angel!Skizz thing) going back to an early Naked and Scared clip where Skizz says he's like an angel on your shoulder or something - so along with the duality of imp!impulse, theres that as well.

I love y’all mentioning Jim Carrey. Not only is he an amazing comic, but I think he’s a great example of how to protect yourself as an artist and comedian. He’s semi-retired now because he needs to protect himself and prioritize self care. He’s dived into his painting/art, family, and other creative pursuits rather than trucking forward in entertainment, which has led to darker paths in the lives of a lot of his contemporaries

The perfectionism podcast especially gave me the push I needed to stop trying to make every project I put out perfect because that way I was never actually releasing anything. I love this episode so much. And yes, you guys are definitely artists! You create stuff for the purpose of eliciting emotional responses, even if the only response you're thinking of is "oh, cool,"* which is as good of a definition of art as any.
*I know you already know this, but even when you're just doing something because it feels cool, you often have much more impact on your audience than that, which is also a pretty common experience for artists, whatever their medium.

There is definitely a blessing and a curse to having a super creative mind. This is specific to those with what we call "natural talent" the creativity comes with a certain level of mental instability that can be difficult to deal with and lends itself easily to self medication to try and stabilize.

Can we have a dedicated tool podcast? The line from wings for Marie, "Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home" this is so emotionally powerful. back ground his mother Judith Marie had a bad stroke that left her paralyzed. it was 10,000 days before she passed away.

I had a dumb idea while working yesterday and it kinda lit a fire in me and I want to see it through. The thing is, it is well beyond my skill set and will take months to learn. I don't know how committed I'll be to it, but I kinda want to give it a shot. It relates a bit to the fan animations Imp & Skizz have been talking about.

I think the reason people/artists aquate you, Impulse, with imps and nether creatures is because of the huge nether base you and Tango made together back in season 3. It was one of your largest builds in your first season and I think it left a huge impression on people. I know for a while both you and Tango were being made into imps/demons, until Tango asked them to stop. So then you kept the imp characteristics and Tango was changed to a blaze-ish creature to keep with the theme. Because how could the artists not keep you and Tango linked? A cool nether fortress as a first impression and the obvious friendship we could see between two redstoners? Not to mention the intimidating presence you give off with your chill voice, calm attidute, and impressive redstone skills offset by your generousity and kindness toward everyone around you creates a unique vibe that just fits with the character design of a being that is supposed to be bad and scary but is actually a gentle giant.
And then comes Skizz. Anyone following you would start seeing Skizz pop up more and more. Not a hermit (yet) but the clear best bud vibes you guys gave just begged artists to find some theme to connect your lore and character design. But how? He just doesn't fit the nether/imp/demon theme. Early Skizz is rarely seen in the nether. Mostly we saw him in the overworld or up in skyblock. Plus his minecraft skin design is all blue eyes and black and white color scheme. Harsh red firey nether just doesnt fit him.
Then Limited Life happened. I'm speculating here because like you I havent seen every skizz and impulse art piece out there and certainly have not been keeping track of when a character design got popular or was first used, but I really believe that Limited Life was a huge factor in why a lot of people make Skizz an angel. In a game of death and betrayal, Skizz makes an affirmation tower where he dedicates his precious limited time to complementing and building up every other player in the game. The fact that he also couldn't seem to hurt people no matter how hard he tried, was never the boogie man, and gave up his life for his team just cemented for me and others how good and kind Skizz was. I definitely started picturing Skizz as a guardian angel at least.
So there, Impulse got impified because his first impression to the fans was this huge nether build as well as his whole gentle giant demeaner. Skizz got angelified because of his clear connection with Impulse and kind way he played Limited Life.
Added bonus: I just want to say how much I love this fandom and one of those reasons being everyone respecting Tango's boundries. The faxt that artists who liced their demone Tango design found ways to reinvent and adapt it when Tango expressed it making him uncomfortable just shows how much this fandom cares about you guys. Like we actually see you as people with feelings and not just gods on a pedestal. And we care for your approval as well as your own comfort. This fandom rocks.

A couple of Aussie artists that I really admire and I’d love to hear your opinions on are firstly a band called King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (a mouthful I know, Skizz I’m sure you can appreciate that), they are a very hard working band that has produced over 20 albums in almost ever genre possible, a bit Zappa, a bit Tool influenced, I reckon you guys will dig them
An animator that I admire is Jarrad Wright, he makes a show called The Big Lez show, most of the content is for a mature audience but what I admire most is he made all the animation using MS Paint originally on a Laptop he obtained from High School, the storytelling and lore runs deep and despite the heavy substance usage is also insightful and spiritually deep, particularly in the later seasons and seeing his animation progression is great too, worth checking out if you’re open minded enough to

Speaking about Jim Carrey as an artist, I'm old enough to remember Jerry Lewis in his hay day as a young teenager.. Carrey and Lewis are a lot a like in my opinion. Their reception usually went over hot or cold. You either like their style or you don't. Strange thing is I am a big fan of Carey, but not so much Lewis even though he was a master at his craft.

So my art teacher from college had an interesting insight to why it's so hard to draw what you see. It's really tough to tell your brain to draw what your eyes see, and not what your brain is telling you what you're seeing. Like, our brain likes to short cut things. We all know what an eye looks like, and it's a general symbol in our brain what is an eye. But if I were to try and draw someone's eyes, that I see, you really have to tell your brain to stop showing your minds eye it's symbol for eye and just what you're seeing in front of you.
I realize using an eye as an example might have been covering but hopefully you get the meaning. There are people out there that are just really good and telling their brain to cool it and can draw what they see vs what their brain is telling them that they're seeing.
