The silent hill 2 soundtrack is actually one of my favourite albums of all time, it effortlessly goes from these amazing soft rock tunes, to beautiful yet haunting ambient songs and even some really grimey, industrial style tracks. It’s one of the only soundtracks I’ve come across that works just as well out of context of the game. It’s just a stunning piece of work and Yamaoka is a genius composer. Promise from the same game is pretty amazing too. I love the 90's guitar-driven rock songs in the SH series, they are so unexpected when you are generally expecting industrial horror, which there is plenty of. Waiting for You, You're Not Here, Hometown, and Cradle of Forest all have lyrics as well.

Best game theme ever composed. I like how it incorporates the Silent Hill 1 theme into it, but just as a motif, but tells its own story and separates from SH1. Laura is a child, but this music is not just a theme of Laura, it's also the game's theme, and the game is about a young man, adult but still young, and a tragedy, a tragedy that also touches Laura.
Only thing about listening to Laura's theme first is the SH theme motif gets overlooked because you wouldn't have known what it was... its just awesome when the mandolin franticly strums in the background (which is seriously the Silent Hill calling card, along with the siren sound and those beautifully unsettling ambience tracks) I have to say though my favorite is still Promise and Promise (Reprise) the piano version, is undeniably the work of a true musical genius
The soundtracks for the Silent Hill games are amazingly haunting and beautiful at the same time. I have so many which are my favorite like Silent Hill, Fear of the Dark, Tears of... Theme of Laura, Promise, Promise (reprise), Null Moon, Heavens Night, Fermata In Mystic Air, Black Fairy, Laura Plays the Piano You're Not Here, End of Sanctuary, Heather's Ladder, Letter-From the Lost Days, Memory of the Waters... There's a hint of a romantic passion in the song. A kind of rekindled love. I think one could think of the song as James' stirrings for Maria, and the angst and seduction it implies.

I love to see that even with no insight on the game, the music is so enjoyable. But my favorite cut of this song is with the dialogue from Maria and James. Always gives me goosbumbs the "It doesn't matter who I am... I'm here for you James. See? I'm real"
Whenever I hear this piece, the thing that pops into my head is a car journey on a winding road out of a desolate city, it feels both upbeat and chilling at the same time with positives and negatives.
One of these days you gotta do a ton of silent hill music because there's so many beautiful songs in the game as well as a few interesting industrial tracks
It's the best soundtrack to the best entry in the series. There are some great songs in the later games, but nothing comes close to the hauntingly beautiful and pants-shittingly terrifying mood of 2. I have a winamp playlist of the entire soundtrack ripped straight from the disk that someone arranged into something you can listen to (the original PS2 background soundtracks come in separate layers and thanks to the magic of the PS2 sound chip individual parts come in and out depending on where you are and what's happening), and it's always there for me whenever I'm doing some late night work.
Another reason why the music is so odd for a Horror game, as in your breakdown of this song at the end, you're pretty much spot on. A lot of Silent Hill 2's tracks convey feelings of sadness, grief, discomfort and loneliness.
psychological horrors are so very different from other horrors, especially phycological horror games the horror of silent hill 2 is james' own demons coming to haunt him. it's in the way some characters like james and angela talk so disjointed, how something is very wrong with james but it's really hard to tell at times. silent hill is more of a story about trauma and learning to let go of trauma, grief, things of the past that haunt us. how you must overcome them, or you will be killed by the manifestations of your trauma made flesh and bone I can't tell you what happens, but there's a specific scene at the end that makes me believe these monsters are not inherently evil. they *want* you to overcome them, but they will not hesitate to kill you if you show a moment of weakness. after you have overcome your grief or whatever your holding onto though, they are content to do no more harm. i think that's a very beautiful thing. silent hill makes it so these suffering people can't run away from their problems anymore. you are forced to face your demons, and you either give up and die or you overcome them without james coming to silent hill, there's no telling how much farther he would've destroyed himself. he even says to the monsters that he needed them. i just think all of this is so beautiful, and how it's so much more than a horror game
Akira Yamaoka is a musical genius, and his soundtracks always blow me away. I know people are feeling conflicted about the dev team who is remaking SH2, but honestly? I'm just happy a new audience will get the chance to experience the world of Silent Hill, and the franchise is getting attention from the mainstream.
if you really do develop an interest in playing SH2 I'd HIGHLY recommend playing the original version (PS2, XBOX, PC [with a bunch of mods to make it a better experience]). I suspect that the remake is going to be changing a lot of the nuance that makes the original such a classic.
Please react to more of silent hills music, mainly 2, 3, 4, homecoming, shattered memories, and book of shadows. All made by the same person. And all have absolutely amazing soundtracks, though the gameplay quality definitely varies a lot hahahaa
Amazing nalysis Atlas! You were quite right about "Laura" she is indeed a character and she is tied to the main character in an interesting way. I won't spoil anything but if by any chance you're a gamer, Silent Hill 2 is a must-play. Whilst Silent hill 2 is indeed a "horror" game, when I believe a more appropriate term for it would be "psychological horror" - the game's core themes are about grief, guilt and punishment. It delves deep into the human psyche, or more specifically, the psyche of the main character James Sutherland and explores the dark recesses of the human mind. The reason I recommend playing the game is because I think the soundtrack, not just 'Theme of Laura', shines incredibly bright when played in context of the game. I think every track in the OST is worth a listen and incredibly well-written. There are a ton of different elements to it. We got growling heavy metal riffs straight out of an Alice in Chains track (in the track "Angel's Thanatos"), but also powerful, soaring melodies (like in the track "Promise"), accompanied by heavy drums and hip hop beats. But also other eerie synthetic sounds which I fail to properly. And of course, haunting piano and string melodies and muffled harmonies can also be found resonating in the background of many tracks - especially the ones that are meant to be ambient tracks. It's a cacophony of bittersweet melodies that come across as not just powerful, but also quite raw and visceral.
Honestly listening to the music with the trailer accompanying it is much better because you hear some dialogue that accentuates the themes the music is complimenting.
The classic Silent Hill games are ever-green classics. Insane atmosphere, terrifying without jumpscares, deep stories and characters, tons of replay value. And naturally, the OSTs and audio effects by the one true Akira Yamaoka are already legendary at this point. Take my word: Do not wait for the butchered demake. Don't fall victim for the totally awful "HD remasters" on PS3 and X360 either. Play the ORIGINAL games, in release order, and each multiple time. If you got even a mediocre PC made in the past 15 years, you can play them all. For free. Just look up the SH PC Guide + DL links.
The "songs" from the SH2 OST are fantastic, but the score itself/sound design deserves more praise. Very rarely do you find games whose every wisp of ambiance has been cultivated so intently.
It's funny how you described and reacted to it, because you were once again on point! Speaking of the original trilogy since in a way they are related, or at least more related than some of the others were, Silent Hill 2 is an outlier among the first three. The first and third are related story-wise while second is not. The town and genre are the same but the story is different and unrelated, think the Halloween movies, though I find that to be more extreme, the thought is the same. Silent Hill 2 covers more than just survival horror, it delves into psychological, body, and existential horror throughout the game in its themes. It has far more involved symbolism than part 1 and 3's "fears." I won't delve too much since it would be spoilers, but, the Silent Hill seen is strange in that there are multiple views of it occurring at once but we are given just one (though another is shown briefly at a specific scene). It is highly symbolic and thematic with its monsters, locations, characters, imagery, and of course music. This piece plays at the start during the classic start menu cut-scenes that were common at that time and invokes certain feelings that, once the game has been completed, are either validated or changed once you know what you saw and heard during that cut-scene (especially depending on your actions and ending in the game). It's an amazing piece the Akira Yamaoka spent a week locked up fixing it up to make as perfect as possible to convey his message to the listener and I think it paid in dividends. Once again, excellent review as always and I really appreciate your views and input.
My favorite game soundtracks of all time. All silent hill games have great music, the best ones were made by Yamaoka. Great to see more people enjoying them! And very educational also. Like!

This is what hope would sound like if it had a theme. Such a good song, this the original theme, promise and tears of are some i put on, just sit and soak in the vibes
You should try other songs from the franchise like "Promise" (SH2), "Dance with the night wind" (SH3) and Wounded Warsong (SH4). There's a lot to enjoy from Yamaoka creations :)
Dude...That conclusion of having a mildly tragic story for the character...How the hell can you get it so right without prior play of the game...Really shows how well the composer put thought into the soundtrack. The Laura in game had a hard life and came to silent hill for a reason. And that's all i'm gonna say. But your conclusion and why she is there fit so well.

Honestly listening to the music with the trailer accompanying it is much better because you hear some dialogue that accentuates the themes the music is complimenting.
yooo great job on the cover you did, was NOT expecting that!
Thanks mate!
Like!
Thank you!
Recomended Main Theme of " Shadows of the Damned " Take me to Hell ( Broken Dream ) of Akira Yamaoka too, awesome song
"Promise" is another good one from this soundtrack.
There is a extended version of this song that was unreleased. But you can hear it from the Silent Hill 2 E3 announcement video. It has a beautiful solo.
First time watching one of your videos and i love your reactions. This is one of my favorite songs, and metric is one of my favorite bands so i love you brought them up. i never heard of garbage before or silversun pickups, so im excited to listen to them.
Awesome!
You should react to summer snow from silent hill 1 , it's so haunting, specially if you see whats happening right when you start playing
Its amazing how Silent Hill 2 keeps on getting rediscovered.
I think it's not only 90 vibe. Main theme imitating jumping in playgroud children game. And Laura is a kid 🙂 Special kid in horror town. What about "Room 312" theme?
Laura Theme legit sounds like The Cure post dark trillogy
This is what hope would sound like if it had a theme.
Such a good song, this the original theme, promise and tears of are some i put on, just sit and soak in the vibes
You should really give a listen to Orison Theme from Star Citizen, it's simply incredible
Great video btw :)
Thanks mate!
I dont quite believe that sh2 remake can do better than old sh2......
It won't. In fact, I can safely call everything I've seen of it pure garbage.
Really amazing theme I played this game for 3 days but I still lsn to this theme since that time
I love Silent Hill 2!!!! So glad to see you react!
OMG I love your reactions so much! Specially this one and the Final Fantasy ones, keep up the good work
Thank you so much!
That's right, all the credit to the composer
The first SH intro being inside this theme is crazy
This is One of my fav. Soo many feels 😭
The only reason i watch the video 00:33
Silent Hill Akira Yamaoka 🖤
