    I operated a 631D in 1988 in Western Australia that could pull 45mph unloaded on a long flat haul and a 633D that could pull 42mph fully loaded - while sheeting the Mt Newman to Port Headland road. Both had direct injection engines. I once walked a D9L 25km to un-bog the 633 when it got stuck good and hard in the mud, then walked it 25km back… turning it around every half a mile so not to wear down the drive train. Ahhh… fun memories. Now I work in an office… sigh…

    Yes, it's ONE OF the fastest scrapers in existence...However, the CAT 660 three-axle scrapers (in their heyday) have attained speeds up to 48 MPH with a full load in top gear on level ground or downhill, according to contractors who have used the CAT 660 and 666 scrapers in their projects....

    The pony motor was having trouble starting so I was spraying ether in the air intake making it sound like that. The year model is between 1955-59.

    Caterpillar should make cars! They'd be the longest lasting cars on the road!

    I used to operate those in the early sixties. That is a DW 20 5 speed main and a 2 speed spliter. The only problem is they left the factory without good brakes. They way we slowed down was we always had the bowl very low and if we need to stop fast just hit the bowl down and let it drag on the ground. Yes they were very rough if they didn't keep the haul road bladed.

    I have loved tractors and heavy equipment since being a toddler. I would really want to see the tractor part of this scraper pulling at a tractor pull, in the highest weight class. This one sure sounded good, even after over 50 years of hard labor.

    Thats scary, there is no reason for road gear to make tht thing go so fast. You have some balls of steel

  • @Arabhacks
    @Arabhacks 12 лет назад

    Yes, some of the earlier equipment had some tall gearing.
    But stopping power was the issue.
    The DoT required better brakes as time went on so now most equipment falls in the "Slow Moving Vehicle" category.
    I remember old graders that could hit highway speeds!.

    DW20 are the toughest scrapers every made. I have 20,000 hours in the seat and pushed them for 30+years . If you kick them out of gear on a safe down hill you can get them over 50 mph easy. 20s will get a hopping on you if the tires are un matched. So watch it and stay safe. I still run them in my sleep.

    I used to play in these as a kid, and my dad at one time drove from Fresno to Bakersfield in his DW20 along with the rest of the fleet, down hwy 99 in California. Some had seats, but none had brakes, so a tire was mounted below the can in case of emergency. And Yeah, they had a reputation of hauling ass.

    Man, I almost got a woody watching that. I learned on a Cat D6 years ago. It was an older machine from the 50's with the pony engine to get it going. You should have heard that thing start on a cold day with starting ether. I loved it, but it only paid $4.00 an hour and had to move on with my real love, music.

    It's fast but not quite the fastest. According to many publications, the fastest scrapers ever were the Caterpillar 660 3-axle scrapers of the 1960's-'70's...The 660's had a maximum speed of 42 MPH fully loaded on level ground and as fast as 60 (YES, 60!) MPH empty going downhill!
