  • Today's video I finally attempt to find a solution to how flat most of my throws come out. I show my process to discover new positions, cues and apply them to my throw. practice went better than I expected and I'm already starting to feel some good things day 1. can't wait for more!

    One thing to consider - looking at the ball position relative to the ground at the release doesn’t necessarily tell you the angle of the vectors. If you plot the trajectory of the ball from the middle through the release, you’ll see closer to a 35 degree angle. Also, 45 degrees will never be optimal because of your release height being >0.

      Interesting, didn’t think about the ball from middle to finish and that angle. I mean sounds like it’s similar results if I did but good to know I’ll check it out.

      Life of JY it will probably be pretty similar, just some food for thought!

    Hey jy have you ever thought of doing a series where we can send you footage of our throws and you critique them? Like how mark bell used to do on the power project. Great video

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад +3

      Joseph Keeley yeah, I’ve thought about it. May do something like that eventually. It’s just tough because I feel like a critique is useless unless you’re getting drills to do to with it but then it’s a whole day process to put a good critique video together when I could use that time to make a video that can help more than just one person.

    I absolutely love your channel, my throws gained atleast 30 ft. I wish you had a playlist on your channel separating shot and disc so I could focus on them individually but still super helpful videos

    I wish you were right handed! I feel like my athletes would connect better with the content you're putting out! Thanks for the great series you're putting out there.

    Your disc looks good. For me to get the height on the disc I have to concentrate on holding my head back when I release. That forces me to get my back bowed in the backwards "C" position which allows me to get under it. Since it is aerodynamic you don't have to have the 45 degrees or thereabouts but around 30 to 35 degrees. As you know the disc's forward edge is angled up like an airplane wing that coupled with the spin and there ya go. Ya gotta love it.

    It's a very very instructive video!

    Try getting your right hand a little lower in the middle and over your head as you approach your block. That will establish the orbit higher which will make your left hand push higher. It sounds stupid but it does work.

    Thanks again for such well thought out content. Could you talk about why your discs to peel off the left and early releasing (for the viewers). I understand why, however, you mentioned it was a breakdown in technique and some of the younger athletes may not know why or what you’re feeling when you release the disc, wide left. And, perhaps an analysis of your lift in relation to the release of the disc. Just a thought.
    Thanks again for the work you put into this; your channel is very insightful. Best wishes during your meet!

    I feel like if you had the same positioning with your right arm in shot that you have in disc it could potentially be a good change

    I have only experienced feeling really throwing the shot put once, exploding at the end. Not just let it go with the acceleration of the spin.

    I meant to add a comment about the two links I posted yesterday. Both articles address your topic with the consensus that 34-37 degrees optimal release angle

    JY what would it take to make it to your college? Im am a junior in high school and I’m looking for schools to throw at and just wonder what it would take to throw at the collegiate level. What are some of your best throws from high school? Could you maybe look at a couple videos of my throws? Id really appreciate some tips.

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад

      Karter Evans uva is pretty tough to get into academically so that stops a lot of people from getting here. Also the throws coach here is incredible but because of that he has pretty high standards for what he wants for an athlete for a scholarship. You’d probably have to be a 61m and 60foot shot putter out of highschool at like 6’5” ish or like 65m only disc or 21m only shot. But that’s just for a big scholarship walk on and stuff is different

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад

      I threw around 70m in hammer, 22m in weight throw 61m in disc and 62 feet in shot in highschool.

    Hey JY I’m a sophomore about 6’6 280 throwing about 135ish I always mess my throws up at the end (catch) is there drills I can do to help that? Or trying an implement like a bowling pin or something?

      Isaac Ruddell I’d imagine it’s pretty similar if not exactly the same since that’s where humans are strongest

    JY: Do you think he is trying to open his left arm long and hard before he pulls it in the finish or more controlled?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад

      Good question, not a clue. He’s doing something I need to figure out though :p

      Do you throw it open hard?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад

      Justin J Stanford some of my furthest throws so far have come when I focus on a more aggressive finish with my off arm. But I’d also say my finish is the worst part of my throw right now. So I may be completely wrong with that thought process and maybe he just thinks aggressive leg in the middle and the off arm just happens for him. My biggest off arm thought usually is just to not have it pull off the finish

    I need some more height on my throw but then my release is really bad and the disc is flying like this / instead of -. How can i fix this?

    • @matthewrodriguez4004
      @matthewrodriguez4004 5 лет назад

      Tad Dimmitt try thinking about keep your thumb parallel to the floor through the middle and have level shoulders at the finish

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 лет назад

      Tad Dimmitt if it’s just when you try to get lift then maybe you’re pulling off the finish with your off arm as a result of trying to get the disc up higher,m. I’m completely just getting but that’s an issue I used to have and thought it may be similar. Use the legs to get lift and keep the arms level until you release would help that.

    Not 32 degrees more like 41 degrees.
