In this video me and @DekuGamer go in-depth with Splatoon 3's hub area. We cover small hidden details you've probably never seen before, and explain why this is the best hub in Splatoon history.

I know your talking about how they made the hub look so alive but the posts are very good at distracting me from it with how deranged they are
fr 😭
makes sense in terms of what society became
Especially 7:39
At least they give you the option to keep them on or off
@@me_when8845 no one in their right mind would turn posts off tbh
i wanted to mention that murch’s phone screen is a bit cracked, which emphasizes that it’s the same one he had since s2, and the “cameras” in the salmon run lobby are actually little buddy’s point of view. everytime you log into the game, he changes his position, and each one shown there on the tv are places he is seen in the plaza
Are you saying…
…
Oh no…
@@SandJosieph i can only imagine lore enthusiasts' reactions when finding this out
Hol Up...
Yoooo that Little Buddy thing is crazy
oh lord...
I often find that the best feeling is that Splataville is so intricate, you wouldn't mind taking a walk from the lobby to Grizzco or even run in the secret alley next to Grizzco to the Tableturf staff. Or you could take the long way and pass by the water.
It truly feels like a story. "Today, I'm going to start with my Grizzco shift. Then some Clam Blitz. I wonder what's featured in the shops today?"
And the little details that gives everything depth is truly why this game was made with so much care. They really kept it chaotic and random. Details to lesser details.
Not true, no-one ever willingly plays Clam Blitz
@@AshenDust_ This reply
It took me this comment to realize I was walking the long way to the Tableturf corner.
Im SO HAPPY to have found someone who loves Splatoon's design, its all so perfectly integrated like a puzzle and it's why this game series is some of my favorite series of all time. Imagine if Overwatch or Valorant made a hubworld as good as this one, I think that would make the game just so much more better. Splatoon's world building is EXCEPTIONAL and the lore just add on top of it.
I'm super excited for Big Run just to see how the plaza and the stages looks like during this apocalyptic event.
Personally, I've lost hope for big run (hope this ages well)
splatoon 3 FAR exceeded my expectations
@@yuffy3831 why would you loose hope for big run? Just because it’s not happening soon doesn’t mean it’s gonna be bad.
@@Inmortuae2233 I never really said it would be bad, I just kinda hoped for it to happen in october, if there isn't a halloween themed splatfest already.
(I gotta say, I should've been a bit more specific :')
@@yuffy3831 Oh alr
I still think its kinda funny how you can hear an inkling inside of the porta potty if you stand there long enough
i‘m so glad that the back alleys during splatfests were mentioned because it‘s honestly one of my favourite in game areas. the whole atmosphere is just amazing, and it made me yearn to visit splatsville during a splatfest so badly. i love how when you listen closely near the shops selling traditional food, you can actually hear the sounds of food being fried or boiled, i love how you can see the steam above hot food, it‘s such tiny stupid details that didnt need to be there but made me enjoy the game so much more.
I love how the bgm changes to be more echo-y if you move away from the center stage, just how it would in real life.
Fun fact when you change your locker to a wooden one it makes different sound effects
There's also a different effect for when you have the battered one
about the airplanes: squids and octos arent the only species residing in inkopolis, so it makes sense that thered be forms of transit that arent particularly useful for them
i LOVE that im not the only one that appreciates the details that Splatoon puts into the world and the cool additional worldbuilding they do by making their menus full on walkable lobby areas and pointless side streets you can walk down, probably my favorite game hub world in a long time
My dream for splatoon will always be a multiplayer hub, where there can be 40 other players in a hub and everyone's walking around and could maybe chat somehow.
As someone who grew up around a lot of festivals I really feel like Anarchy Rainbow is the best hub fest theme. I prefer Color Pulse as a piece of music out of context, but Rainbow feels more the the backdrop of a night of fun and social gathering. Pulse sounds more like a concert.
This is extended by Deep Cut moving around the town constantly rather than Off The Hook staying in 1 spot in the center of attention.
I didn't play aplatoon 1 so I don't have personal experience but City of Color is just meh to me as a song.
Don’t disrespect city of color -
You had to be there
@@sugared.spicee thats fair. I remember thinking "We Are Finally Cowboys" was an overrated song until I actually played the Henry fight for myself.
Nogami always said that he wanted to make splatoon a lived in game world as much as possible so the hub area is a must in splatoon.
My favorite part of the composition of Splatsville is how they put the voting board where you pick your team in Splatfests directly behind where the player spawns, making it way too easy to completely miss it.
The obvious Kowloon Walled City vibes that Splatsville has are just so vibrant and it's a real amazing aesthetic for sure.
Splatsville looks like HK proper more than the walled city.
Another detail i'd love to add would be after a splatfest, just walk around the entirety of splatsville and you'll see piles of garbage bags in multiple different areas! it's a small detail but really cute :)
lol scott falco at 5:12
Yoooo I didn’t even notice that when I recorded it haha
I like the mention of how sometimes people feel big hubs are a waste of time. It’s true that everyone has their own take on it and this game understands that. Me personally, I like games that waste my time in fun ways without me realising, makes the world and character feel more more alive as in real life no matter how hard you try to stay on task there are always little things to distract you.
One thing you missed is that the lobby roof actually opens during sunset of the splatfest times! Cool detail i noticed while messing around in the lobby.
My favorite part of this video is that in the middle of being invested in listening to all the cool details, the usual meme posts like "I splatted your octoballs" are standing around in the background
Also I highly suggest taking a look at some stage designs in recon mode just to see how different yet similar the stages are. For example Splatville stages are very distinct for Inkopolis stages however Splatville stages still feel so much different than other Splatvilles stages as well. Ex. Haggelfish and Minemeat
Having such a big hub area makes me want more stores that we can enter. Surely they should have room for apartments. Give us more stuff.
I HATE the pixel overlay. They don't actually clamp each 'pixel' to be one color, and once you notice that it just looks really fake and cheap. It wouldn't be so bad if the pixels weren't so enormous!
You're right that the back alley during splatfest is the best, though. It's just... a happy place, just off the main drag, I love it so much.
I already made one comment about a specific thing I really thought was cool that the developers put thought into and you guys made me aware of, and there’s so much more like that, but I’d be loitering the comments section if I did the same for each one so I’ll just encompass the rest by saying
“Thank you both so much for bringing attention to all of this in such well edited and interesting videos on both your channels. I never would have noticed much of it otherwise, and now I feel like I’m learning more about design as well as solidifying Splatoon 3 as one of my most favorite games ever.”
I’m so happy to hear that! It’s amazing that you’re learning about design and the game through these videos. I appreciate your kind words. Thank you!
I only noticed the music from the buildings that become stalls during splatfest, definitely going to have to check out the others! And I'll admit, sometimes I don't even play the game, I just boot it up to walk around and it's can be as much fun as getting into a match. Of course, I'm the kind of person to just explore a Minecraft world instead of trying to do something like defeat mobs or build 😅 it's honestly one of the best parts about Splatoon 3 specifically, it seems to reward you for exploring.
16:36 the scenes on the tv in grizzco are all from the point of view of little buddy in areas he might spawn at
4:10 same. now that i’m older and know how games work and stuff it’s pretty obvious that all i’ll find is a void if i were to clip out, but as a kid you just have no clue about any of this and just imagine and wonder what’s beyond the game’s boundaries. if i were a kid playing splat 3 i would never leave the hub area just due to how big it really seems.
I love the theming of certain things being related to energizing/calming drinks such as coffee and expresso. The kettles in the single player mode that hold levels, the thermo bottle that’s the pod you can walk into in the lobbies and another way to bring up the game menu for choosing modes, the expresso things as transportable respawn points, and even the grizzly baskets used to deposit eggs looks like a coffee cup based item. (I dunno what it is to be exact, oops)
I think I was 8 when Splatoon 1 was out, and I remember passing time in the hub. I remember trying to get out to the road, and trying to jump over the fence. Passing hours doing "parkour" and watching the squid sisters. Now Imagine 8 years old playing Splatoon 3, the hub is giant with a lot of secrets, just a lot of hours go exploring the hub.
When I'm done yeeting my controller off the window because of an unlucky losing streak, I tend to strut around the hub, taking in the scenery of the city. Kinda reminds me of where I used to live as a kid which is soothing to me.
Edit: For real, any time you feel the salt pouring, try walking around the hub for a minute or two, enter the shops, take a banter at tableturf battle. You'll find yourself recharged and refreshed to keep on battling
I was not expecting a namedrop of a hat in time
I love this so much
Those details show the how much love and work the devs put in the game
You went really in depth on this one and I love it! The amount of detail in the hub is incredible. I had no idea the composition of the buildings were so thoughtfully placed. When something is well designed it makes things more intuitive for the user, almost making the design choices invisible. It’s been fun working on these videos with you!
This is one of the best collabs on RUclips
6:23 I'm so happy someone else noticed it. it's so nice & symbolic!
About the stickers, it reminds me of bars and venues that would host punk shows. All phone poles and light posts get stickered up in the same way, but you also find the one really high up one and you start thinking “how do you think they got that up there?”
My favorite area is that high place in back up that ramp. It's so nice and peaceful up there and during Splatfest if you're back there you can still watch Deep Cut's performance because it's being projected on the wall in a huge image. Seeing that the first time immediately hit me with the feels. It brought back all the nostalgia from when I was a kid and me and my family would go to the Drive-In movie theaters. Everytime I see it I'm just so happy.
I absolutely LOVE Sploon 3's hub area. They did an amazing job making the hub feel like its actually lived in and there's more than just a handful of citizens in the town. Splatfests in Sploon 3 is my favorite of all the games. The way they do the music with Anarchy Rainbow makes it seem as if the entire town is singing alongside Deepcut and I LIVE for it. It literally feels like an actual festival
I'm guessing, similar to the ink weapons, that the espresso machines are sport regulated gear that is put away after a match.
If you really want to go up the cafe in Splatoon3…
You can! It’s the Starbucks at the famous Shibuya crossing in Tokyo!
the camera footage in grizzco is taken from the smallfrys. apparently grizz somehow managed to hook up a camera to them.
I'm so happy that you talked about this! I'm the one who wrote about the hierarchy and verticality of this hub in your comment section and your response was super nice. I knew you'd make a video about it and it came out super well
11:56 they let little buddy in but not us
18:45 those "things" are festival floats! based off ones from natsu matsuri, festivale, and even jpop idols that have little floats like that for concerts on occasions.
It's always such a treat to see one of your videos!
Some tidbits I'd like to add for anyone who likes small details!
15:50 Something I really love about the lockers is the fact that the material of the locker influences the sound it makes. Lockers made out of wood and metal sound as you'd expect them too. And interestingly enough, there's a much older and beat-up locker texture you could purchase that sounds a lot louder and rusty. These small touches make me feel content with the lockers in this game, even if we can't get apartments.
16:37 I'm sure someone has already pointed it out, but the camera locations in Grizzco are actually possible spawn locations you could find your Little Buddy at! Though those aren't all the locations, of course. But it gets you thinking about some sort of deeper connection. *Wink wink*
Man there is so much stuff happening in the hub it's absolutely crazy. I need to check how the big curved tv in the lobby is a Switch, and take my time strolling around Splatsville during splatfests instead of always battling. Would be happy if you did a video about the design of Alterna, I think that would be neat.
Love the hub but wish they had other species just hanging around randomly like In the train In octo expansion
murch's phone screen also has some cracks on it which i thought was a really neat detail
In the splatfest demo i noticed the shops that were only open during the event and thought that was so cool. There are also cars that pack up the splatfest both at the end for about a day
8:30 I think the other modes of transportation are for different species like jellyfish, or maybe its even somthing inklings go on for fun
6:30 I NEVER NOTICED THAT, THATS COOL!
“Newer games like Mario galaxy”
Hey! Something I noticed. There are small fry sitting where the Grizzco cameras are. They face the same way and they're always in those four locations.
cool facts i found while exploring splatoon while watching this:
-if you go to the left of the lobby and stare at the blue light screen constantly flashing up the tower, you can see some flickering at the edge of some of the leds
-I havent had the chance to explore the splatoon 2 lobby for myself, so i dont know if this is new or not, but i found some art that people drew vertically ACTUALLY be used vertically when displayed as graffiti art (the only place i really found it is the staircase leading up to that higher balcony behind the tableturf area)
Overall though, i love the atmosphere of the game and had so much fun exploring the plaza. I really wish i could just erase my memory on this game so that i can re-experience the feeling of being new to the area! I got this game a little over 2 weeks ago and cant wait to see what this place will be like at my first ever splatfest :D
I’ve always sunk just as much time exploring the Splatoon series’s hub areas as I do actually playing the game modes. The hubs are one of my favorite parts of this series bc of how alive they all feel and all of the little details you can find.
Murch grew up big because of all the super sea snails we fed him lmao
This IP has such potential!!! I've felt that since I first played Splatoon 1, opening up to a splatfest that just happened to occur the night I started playing. If they expanded this beyond just games it could be bigger than most Nintendo series by far.
The cameras are there, just some are harder to see than others.
16:34 a intresting detail here is that all the cameras are pointed at spots little body spawns in! Grizz is keeping an eye on him, before for suspicion, now for kicking his butt XD
The Shoal looks awesome for a building no one will ever use
In multiplayer games, a badly done hub is an inefficient menu, while a well done hub is... Still an inefficient menu, but it's an inefficient menu you enjoy being in. And I fully agree that it's great that Splatoon's hub - while I love it - can be ignored via menus. (Unless you want to turf some tables. Not sure why that's not an option via the menu.)
I'm finding it hilarious that your examples of good hubs skipped the best hub world in any single player video game ever, going from Mario 64 to Mario Galaxy without mentioning Mario Sunshine. Delfino Plaza is a hub world that's intricate enough that you could remove the portals and I'd believe it was a full - early - level due to just how large it is plus how many collectables there are to find in it. Which in a single player platformer with something of an exploration focus? Is exactly what you want from a hub. Peach's castle while a good hub still feels like a hub - It feels like a gateway to the actual content, and Galaxy's hub more even so.
I think Monster Hunter also does really good hubs, based on my limited exposure to the franchise and what people tell me about it.
0:09 AYO IS THAT UNBEATABLE!?
Fun fact! The cafe sign reads DORTTA RPO (with one of the letters flipped) in StopD, a popular font for actual storefront signs. This is such an obscure thing that I'm unsurprised nobody else figured it out before...
You can probably find the font online easily to compare since it's so common, and some older Windows versions have it installed, which I learned about by messing around in Paint! I wish this was more common knowledge.
I think the word at 8:51 might say “Tower”, so it’s “Tower Three” since each previous hub worlds also had lobby towers.
It doesn’t use the same letter for E, but this is like several thousand years in the future or something, so the written language has probably evolved a lot.
Another funny detail about murch is that his phone has cracks in it
"behind this cool little area" with the camera centralized on that post made me laugh
this hub design is so good that during the testfire I had a blast just walking around and exploring for most likely hours
16:33 the screen that displays the splatsville are actually from small fry's eyes, you can check every single monitor that it displays and see for yourself!
😮
I noticed the Lobby Screen being a switch when I was walking under it and looking up at the curve
Then I saw the port on the bottom
U mentioned the dummies as a yellow thing in the lobby but they change color depending on what color ink you have which is based off of your last match
The reason why the hub is so detailed, is to keep you amused while waiting out the 10-minute penalty for them disconnecting you.
About those cameras, they are there. A really easy one to spot is by the big water pit with the trash bags.
Also little buddy in da cafe!? For real1?
Surprisingly, when I first booted the game I got lost and couldn’t find the lobby
This is nice and all but I absolutely lost it at 7:39 seeing the graffiti on the wall- it was NOT what I was expecting to see in a video like this😂
When I was recording that part I saw the comment and thought, "wouldn't it be funny if we included that in?" XD
@@DekuGamer ahahaha yes 😂
I'm appreciative of how much love was poured into Splatoon 3.
12:02 oh shoot, i didn't even realize you could see the splatcast in this one, how did i miss that?
Gotta agree, the details are up to T! Even the rooms like grizzco and lobbies! I love the graffitis and chalks scattered around🤩
13:20 squid jump!
16:36
I've seen some vids on this, but as it seems Little Buddy actually shows up in these areas
... perhaps he has a grudge against our egg-snatching jobs?
Another cool thing to analyze might be the specials (again, technically.) For example, the fact that you pull away a part of the Big Bubbler in order to activate it (idk what that's called lmao) is a really cool little detail
Yesss another Splatoon analysis video! Thank you so much for making these!
There were some leaks about Big Run recently- a new skybox and new graffiti. I dunno if there will be enough to make a video about it once everything is finally implemented, but I'll definitely be trying my best to appreciate it for myself :p these videos have really got me looking at Splatoon in a whole new light!
Cool details about murch his phone has a Crack in it
ugh YES i love the hub so much
majority of the time i make the conscious effort to WALK to grizzco instead of just using the menu because its just more FUN
and even tho the hub is huge you never feel tired or bored of walking the distance because of all the art you can look at
10:06 the sign sayd gridy!!
Murch getting into the vibes of the splatfest absolutely makes sense when you hear him explain why he gives such a big discount on scrubbing splatfest tees. he says it's because he just loves splatfests and likes seeing people getting into the festival spirit
A few cameras in the hub actually match grizzco's CCTV, at least the one near the water in that distant area: there is a cam here, which matches one of images on CCTV
in the lobby in the little area u stand in to pick a mode theirs a kettle underneath glass implying thats how you get to level to level
"newer" games like galaxy. ah yes, only 15 years ago.
I appreciate you showed unbeatable! It's my favorite indie rhythm game.
Your videos make me enjoy the little details in the game even more.
Btw someone checked out the locations shown on Grizzco's CCTV and little buddy might show up at those locations if you're lucky.
(slight story spoilers)
the deep cut logos on the japanese architecture at 7:41 is actually most likely there for the 3 lights - beings who saved the splatlands from a massive flood long ago. in the sunken scroll that talks about them its shown that their symbols are oddly the exact same as deep cuts.
>im envious of the kids that will grow up with this game
splatoon 2 dropped when i was NINE. and i still love that plaza to death. the subtle maritime memory playing, spyke vibing in the window... its probably bad but i still love it. i cant comprehend the 9 year olds who are gonna play this bro
6:24 That’s such a cool detail
12:48 murch's phone screen is also cracked.
btw the 7:40 is kinda inaccurate, it looks more like a paifang (chinese gate) then japanese
these huge things can be seen where something important or historical happened
also thing to note: i think the whole urban hub area is inspired by hong kong, even more specifically kowloon walled city, which has been dubbed city of anarchy (surprised this hasnt been discussed much in the community
This is a really great video! I enjoy people talking about this game so much
On the topic of murch’s phone, the screen is actually broken! It’s a cool detail, just like how he has put stickers on his phone.
14:30 3d artists trying not to comment 'imperfection is the digital perfection'
7:38 and behind this cool lil area- SQUIDGAMES⁉
15:24 they started it! Have you SEEN Splatoon 1's title screen? They can't just do that and leave us like this!
Murch's phone screen is actually cracked
2:15 wait a minute...is that my octo? this makes me feel famous hi youtube
and something i love about splatfests is that the jellyfish seem to also pick teams and some even bring their children to the festival or put glowsticks on their heads. for example there's a little jelly eating a dumpling at 18:08 and i love them
