I’m glad Stephanie brought up the how many of the songs today are about the persons hardship opposed to focusing on the one who gives freedom. He is the well of living water.

I have to disagree. If I tell you my friend is kind, I might give you a good impression of her. If I tell you my friend let me live with him and even sold his new car and gave me the money to help me out when I was struggling to make ends meet, then you will know for sure that my friend is kind. Giving examples from struggles and experiences we relate to not only makes it more concrete and easy to grasp, but it shows thankfulness and also gives God glory.

saftis - The thing is these songs don’t turn the corner to get to that person who did all of that. It’s “I was broke. Without a home. Totally broke. No penniless. Without any money. Poor. I was sad, too. (SADsad) Oh God I was very sad. So so sad. I was in despair. Without a hope. Not a friend. Not a place. The cares of the world weighed me down. My face saw no smiles. My heart knew no joy. My mind knew no peace. I was lost. Life for me was pain. Then I met Jesus. The end
These songs don’t turn and shift to be all about Him. Yes, there’s a place for hardship/ pain... much like a psalm of David where it’s “I’m in despair” for 13 lines... but in never ends in that. After the despair comes BUT *YOU* O LORD ARE A SHIELD FOR ME, *YOU* ARE MY GLORY AND *YOU* ARE THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD.” and “I WAIT FOR YOU” “YOU ARE TRUSTWORTHY” “YOU RESCUED ME BEFORE. I *KNOW* I CAN DEPEND ON YOU”

Watching Steffany from the time she first came to our church, my heart would leap when she came onto the stage. She would dance, kneel, lay on the floor, turn her back to the audience and the one thing that was obvious was that she was worshiping Jesus, not the spot light, not the audience but Jesus. She walks in worship, lives in worship and that’s why she leads so well.

Bethel music kept me close to God as a young Christian. It really ministered to me. I strayed from God for years but came back to God full throttle this year. I hadn't listened to worship music in years so as I was searching I remember how I was really into Bethel. I still like some of their music but I recognize a lot of the songs are just as Stephanie mentioned! Like a feeling or about themselves. The songs I once loves don't minister to my heart anymore. Growing up in Spanish Pentecostal church, I heard old worship songs as a teen I didn't care for them hence why I really liked Bethel but now as an adult and fully encapsulated in God , the old songs sung have such a beautiful, meaningful and biblical truth that truly allows you to worship the Lord God with all your heart, soul and mind ❤

The old Gospel is just that - built on The Gospel (the message of truth), while some of the newer music is about emotionalism. On the surface it's inspirational music but it doesn't contain The Message/The Gospel. Inspiration is good when you're going about your daily business and want to be fed with good, clean, heaven focused music BUT worship and ministry is completely different. Ministry that calls to the deeper place requires The Gospel. That's why you notice the difference now rather than in your youth (and don't think there aren't youth who have gone deeper than some elders), you've gone deeper. You're more discerning and that's a good thing.

Married to that gifted musician you speak of,
    He loves the spotlight
    The compliments
    The recognition
    The supply
Does he share his faith ?
Does he read and know the Word?
Is he a shepherd to his family?
    Does he understand repentance?
Is he filled with the spirit and bearing fruit?
    Is he humble ?
    Is he a giver?
    NO!!
    It’s ALL about him.
Everything must revolve around his talent and his gifting.
It’s been a very difficult marriage.
Wish I heard this convo 23 years ago.

If I where to give my own $0.02, I would say seek God in this yourself and focus on loving your husband back to the Lord.
Your husband won't be own by bitterness. But perhaps if he discovers that your faith is genuine behind the scenes when he isn't looking, he might come to take his eyes off himself and put them back on God in his private walk.
I know bitterness and unforgiveness can hold us back so I guess all I would suggest is try not to let bitterness towards his false displays take you away from loving him. God loves him. God loves you. And He doesn't want a root of bitterness to stop your growth, methinks.

The danger is not only for the "creatives", i.e. our poets, musicians and artists; it's also true of those who are gifted in the "Five-Fold" gifts. A truism that applies is, "His/her character could not support the anointing (gifts)." Also, I love Steffany's comment concerning some of the songs, "It's not about Him; it's about what I get from Him!"

This has been in my heart for a long time. Most of our songs in church are about God moving mountains, working miracles, fighting our battles etc. Seldom do I walk into a church and hear love, adoration, reverence for Jesus. Its, disheartening. But I sense that this might be changing. I think it starts with repentance, and a returning to the heart of worship (its all about Him).

Steffany said 'You come back to One' and that's absolutely right. It's an Audience of One we are worshipping. And when we can worship firstly in the secret place with an Audience of only One, we can then worship in front of thousands of people. When we don't need to worship in front of many people, and can be happy worshipping only in the Secret Place, then worship becomes pure and much, much more than a genre.

So if I am interpreting Steffany's litmus test about whether or not our worship is genuine and appropriate is how something feels (the energy in the room). That is one of the main criticisms of the charismatic movement, that so much is driven by feelings. The litmus test should be whether or not something is biblically or theologically sound. Secondly the motive of the leader...is it for my own glorification or God's. Feelings come and go. Something can feel bad and be entirely appropriate, at the same time something can feel amazing and be way off. One of the biggest problems in our culture, especially for the younger generation is worldviews, philosophies, epistomology that is driven by feelings. Cancel culture is a by-product of this feelings-based approach to interpreting what is true. As believers we need to hone the skill of true discernment...dividing truth from error. This is where I agree that the focus should be studying the word.

I could be wrong but I don’t think she is talking about internal feelings because we know that the heart cannot be trusted. It is deceitful above all things Jeremiah 17:9. I think what she meant is that after you have spent time with God you can recognize HIS presence and you will know when it’s not there. It’s not a feel good kind of flesh thing but a sensing of the Holy Spirit resting on you.

This is definitely something my husband and I discussed even before persuing songwriting and releasing the music God put in us. It is all about Him. And we are much older than the average new artist, and I'm sure that was intentional from the Lord. I'm not sure I would've handeled it the same when I was young, maybe, but maturity in the Lord is so very important (which can also happen at a very young age). Truth and Intimacy with Jesus. The lover of my soul; my first love. Thank you for sharing 💝

Praise God!!! Thank you both for this truth...I love to worship and praise but my heart has been broken because so many times it has become about "us" in songs...and it should be true worship and praise of Him!!!! ❤

Total agreement in this. Yes there’s a time and a place for more “blessings” songs, but in reality we are called to minister to Him.
    Great video!

Excellent interview. Very much agree with the notion that worship songs are to or about God. NOTHING wrong with songs about our own experience but that are not worship... Wonderful to write and sing but they belong in a concert setting or even in a "special music" where it's meant to share with the congregation, etc.

"The fruit will always speak of the root"
Fall in love with Jesus and the rest will follow and flow out of that. And by fall in love I mean be head over heels in a relationship with HIM! The best thing I did in my walk with the Lord and as a worshipper was to dive into the word and daily journal about the revelations of Jesus that I saw in scripture and what God was teaching me through the process.

aww God bless Stef! I was one of those people who heard bethel songs and refrained from listening because they were a bit unbiblical, but this chat reminded me that we are all works in progress. We all have sinned (and done things that we wouldn't put out today) and we all fall short of the glory of God. As a fellow artist, I recognize that my work years ago is not a reflection of where i am today, and how the Lord has refined me. Ahhh ❤

This is so so good!!!! The lack of knowledge of and love for the Word has permeated our charismatic Church culture for years and not just with some worship leaders and teams. I am thankful we are becoming aware of that lack of balance in our walks. He is worthy and so is His Word. HE is our focus!!! I just love everything that is being said here and have shared this video with many people, including worship leaders who are friends of mine. Thank you so much for this message. It was shared with humility, love and honor for all.
