  • Today we might think of skiing only as an alpine sport. But its fascinating origins lie in China's Altay Mountains, with an ancient people who used skiing to hunt big game in deep snow. Their descendents still practice the art.

Very interesting. A great upload. That stance is just recently echoed by surfers on stand up paddle boards!

This doesn't surprise me the Chinese's seem to have invent just about all of the ancient technologies. Europeans and Scandinavians adapted and apply their ideas to suit their environments.

Skis are such a simple invention that they were likely invented lots of places. They've found a ski in Norway that's 5200 years old for example. There's nothing in the video or article that indicates that these people were the original inventors. Interesting video nonetheless.

I don't quite understand, as far as I learnt cross country skiing was invented in Scandinavia and alpine skiing in my neighboring township Lilienfeld, Austria

Because European history co-opts many things. I know many people who think the Greeks invented algebra too. But based on historical findings and scientific dating - it has been found that the region of what is now northwest China - in the Altai mountain region is the first documented area for skiing. Humans always find "new" history. So we may find out down the line someone else did it earlier. But as of now - this is the oldest... Much older than Europe.

Or the origins could be from Europe. Good video though :)

"The whole tradition of skiing is very much on its last legs" haha what are you talking about?! Obviously you've never skied Colorado during the holiday season. Yeah ancient way is on its last leg because everyone that skis like that is tearing up there knees.

I think they mean this kind of skiing, and making the skis and using the single stick.

Wrong. They were found in the Vychegda basin, somewhere in the vicinity of Arkhangelsk. That's well west of the Ural mountains, and clearly in the European part of Russia.

All we know is that skiing was happening long before concepts like sweeden, or asia, or europe existed.
