    oas fixing the controller like it's that scene from Toy Story 2 where the old chess player man does a whole full-body repairment on Woody

    Hey Oats, I just wanted to say thank you for going above and beyond for all of your viewers. Honestly, I have been wanting to learn more about this stuff and you made it extremely practical for someone to understand how to take apart a SNES controller and troubleshoot the issues. This was incredibly informational and nice knowledge to have in the back of my mind if I wanted to start getting into Super Metroid.
    You definitely need more followers and views on your channel. Please continue to do more Super Metroid content in the future. I am extremely grateful for all the effort you put into your content and I also want you to know that there are people outside of your twitch chat that do watch and appreciate your content silently from the shadows. I'm sure you make their day just a little better after they see you upload.
    Thanks again for everything you do. Cheers

    The "paper mod" trick is quite helpful. My usb xbox controller has issues with the R1 button feeling a little squishy. I'm going to see if this trick will fix that, too.

    I know this very well. When the black coating on the rubber membranes are worn out they start to give wrong imputs. If you are into imput-heavy games, especially fighting games, you should change the rubber membranes from time to time.

    Probably still a long way from not being able to obtain official/original SNES controllers in bulk, but eventually such repairs will require a soldering setup because it'll be replacing actual components on the boards, not just swapping boards and cleaning.

      At that point they start allowing emulation like I believe Mario Brothers allows for NES.

    i generally like ifixit products, they've of a very nice quality, my only issue with them is, especially on laptop repairs, SOME screw wells are very deep and narrow and the ifixit bits are short, so you will sometimes still need a set of small screwdrivers for certain projects.

    A cotton swab in combination with isopropyl-alcohol is usually everything that is needed to fix these. Just cleaning all the contact points(board and membranes) should solve any problems.
    Finger grease and other crap prevents good contact and makes stuff stick.

    • @ZeroX252
      @ZeroX252 2 года назад +8

      At this point, especially with the number of hours that Oats puts in on a given controller - we have other things starting to go wrong. The carbon contact pads are worn and cracked and the copper substrate underneath is fully oxidized. I've had luck scraping the carbon off and resurfacing with a high quality silver solder, but its hard to get a nice uniform layer like the carbon was. From there, the membranes are starting to age to the point they are cracking and falling apart. Aftermarket membranes exist, but they feel and perform nothing like the original Nintendo membranes. For L and R the plastic is starting to wear to the point that you often don't get the correct travel of the button physically cannot stay where its supposed to. Thirty years is a long time.

    is there an appreciable difference between the purple/lavender face button controllers from the red/yellow/green/blue ones? I grew up using the former but only ever see the latter at events and whatnot

    • @MisterCee420

      The red/yellow/green/blue controllers are Super Famicom controllers.

      8BitDo SN30 or SN30 pro don't have a d-pad suited for Super Metroid Wall Jumps, I had to buy a real SNES controller for good results.
