This is quality information. I've been working hard on my homes cool season lawn for 3 years, each year I became more serious and increased my learning and spent more time and money on the lawn. From Home Depot I tried buying bags of soil and blends with cowfrom for lawns, Top dressing 1800 sq ft the weakest part of my lawn with 3 cubic yards of compost and 1 cubic yard of topsoil
Top dressing the back yard of 2k sq ft of my home lawn with 5 cubic yards of Compost from my local nursery has helped my lawn more than any other single thing I've done. Each year 10 bags in spring then at least 15 ,bags of soil for lawns from Home Depot and it barely helped. Maybe for seeding small patches. But a dump truck was so much cheaper than bags and better.
Question on top dressing materials on native soils. Can I use 100% sand for drainage purposes for one year and use straight compost the following year and alternate sand and compost every other year? Will this cause any layering issues in the long run?
