    Ok let's get some things straight. All big companies sub contract tasks better suited to specialized companies. For example, when you call Apple on the hotline, do you really believe you are calling Apple directly? No... The same goes for Microsoft, banks etc. There are companies that are highly specialised at different areas and simply do these things more efficiently and better.
    How that sub contractor treats and pays it's employees is none of Apple's business as long as that company is legal in all aspects of course. Of course Apple monitors the quality of work being done by these companies on a very regular basis.
    Let's face it. Who bothers to repair a motherboard or a graphics card these days. You simply replace it, they are cheap as chips. It would probably cost way more to repair it in labor alone in respect to the production cost, which is practically nothing.

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  3 года назад +74

      I pay 15 people that work real jobs doing this and I started with no money? Who bothers? over 35,000 customers.

    • @cisjga
      @cisjga 3 года назад +5

      @@rossmanngroup I'm not discounting that at all. Don't expect Apple or anyone else to repair a motherboard for example when it costs them nothing for a new one. The labor cost would be more than the replacement. An iPhone costs a maximum of $40 to produce. Knowing this, there is no way Apple is going to train anyone in detailed repair beyond replacement.
      For detailed repair, that is where people like you come in and your business is made possible by the very high prices Apple asks for in repair costs, or simply the refusal to repair. Especially on older models considered vintage to them.

    • @cisjga
      @cisjga 3 года назад +1

      @@Carterthielftw_ $300? No chance.
      A big slice of Apple's high prices go back to the customer in many ways. You can call Apple and have a 1 hour chat with a sales rep for example, try doing that with Samsung. You can call tech support 5-6 years after your purchase and they will still try to help you. It's a totally different business model, for many it's hard to understand.
      Yes, I do get it when you need a repair you have a heart attack when quoted but it is how it is. I'm not an Apple fanboy in any way. I don't own anything Apple.

      I started working at a very specialized array processor company when it was very small. The software to run the machines was very custom. One of the software developers had a story about seeing a man come into his office late each evening to empty the trash. After about a month, a company meeting was held. The software engineer was surprised to recognize the president of the company as the man who emptied his trash each night. That man was C. Norman Winningstad, founder of Floating Point Systems (eventually purchased by Cray), and Lattice semiconductor. Norm was an amazing man who created an amazing place to work.

    These H1B visa workers are basically slaves. And before someone gets triggered let me do a quick historical recap: The first slaves back in the colonies (Northern America, Australia etc.) were poor people that signed a contract for work (and they were mostly white!) Shipping them across the seas was so expensive that they had to work their ass off FOR FREE for dozens of years before they could quit or renegociate the terms. They were promised paradise, adventure, good payment etc. But the reality was much different. And this scheme has simply survived in the form of H1B visa, but to be clear - UAE are doing exactly the same; hiring milions of workers from Asia and India with little or no chance of return. (Edit: This applies to construction workers mostly. Conditions over there are really harsh due to extreme temperature and crazy deadlines. The fatality rate is much higher than the average from western countires.) I believe there was a documentary about UAE's job practices.

    • @DavidPruitt
      @DavidPruitt 5 лет назад +9

      Clearly you've never actually met anyone on an H1B or trying to get an H1B. I've known several talented individuals that got rejected for job offers due to the fact they couldn't get one. They all had college degrees (granted that means little in terms of knowing anything but it does show you something about their personality). They were all applying for well paying jobs, some of which were very niche positions that the companies had problems filling. I doubt CSAT is paying for H1Bs, they're just too expensive for that sort of work (getting one costs more than OPs yearly salary). More than likely it's a word of mouth thing, where a few Vietnamese started working their, figured out how to game the system, and then told all the people they know in their community. If you look at the actual reports CSAT keeps requesting and keeps getting H1B requests denied, so clearly they are hiring workers from the US and not overseas.
      H1Bs are a useful tool for lots of companies, few of them are willing to take on the cost of abusing the system. If you have an issue with the H1B program, first you should learn about it, second you should stop shopping at Wal-Mart and its kin that abuse the systems for their own gain, and third you should vote for local and state officials that are willing to have a reasonable conversation about immigration that doesn't involve "build the wall" or "shutdown ICE".
      I also want to point out that Louis's comment about wages shows that he probably hasn't spent much time outside of the New York area recently. $15 in most of Texas is a damned decent wage for someone doing basic work like the interviewee. While $15/hour in NY wouldn't get you more than a cardboard box $15/hour in the Houston area you could actually afford to rent a decent sized house. I would argue that if you live in NYC you are a slave to the city, I don't see how it survives when even when people making some of the highest wages in the country can barely afford to live their.

    Well as a vietnamese person living abroad, yes I can confirm that alot of Vietnamese people work in condition like this and won't complain. A huge amount of Vietnamese people who entered the U.S or any other western countries belong the generation of low skill Vietnamese, who have no degree, training or proper communication skill but use loop hole in visa administration to get in the country with hope of a better future. This is based on Vietnamese weird idolization of foreign country, especially the U.S, believing life therre is way better than home, despite not really. Hence why even in dangerous working environment like this, they still work and don't complain. Not to mention due to Vietnam having a smaller economy than the U.S, even low payment like this will equate to decent amount of money sending back to the worker family in Vietnam. So in their mind. why work as a second world country with lower payment when you can work in heaven land, with worse working environment but more money.

    @Louis Rossmann: Brother, I know I'm 2yrs late but I want to sincerely thank you for this video. I worked at CSAT in Houston for 1 month in 2018 and can validate EVERY claim from your informant. I worked on the Dell side which to my understanding had even worse conditions than the Apple side. It hurt my heart to hear the story of the employee forgetting about his child in the car; the summer heat here is strong enough to kill an adult in that scenario. And you're right: if he'd had his cellphone, he would've received that call. Notice how the employee was in the building from 9a-7p; he never left. That's pretty much how CSAT works. You go through security hell to get in & have to go through it again to get out; only to repeat again to get back in. I literally walked off of this job mid-shift - I just couldn't take it anymore. I hope the employees were able to unionize as referenced in the video. I honestly feel CSAT should be investigated for every claim made against them because they all have merit. Thank you for bringing this situation to your audience.

    Listening to that second question takes me to one of my biggest problems at work. The official line is 'there is always time to do things safely'. There is also a list of tasks to be done every shift that if you really rush you can just about finish providing it's only quiet to average. The moment it gets busy, or there's something extra to do, say handle receiving stock etc there is no longer enough time to get those tasks done. Options are a: lie about getting tasks done, b: move and work faster thus sacrificing the ability to be safe, c: leave tasks unfinished. Which of those options includes 'Always time to do things safely'? What it really means is ass covering, so if an accident happens they can say 'look at our policy that says do things safely, it's your own fault'. Corporate bs is the same the world over.

    The most proficient and productive repair center I worked at paid employees exclusively on a commission basis at the rate of 40% of charged labor. The other 60% paid admin, rent (and all that goes along with it), and medical coverage. If you didn't fix it right, that commission was removed from your pay. If the customer doesn't understand something, YOU speak with the customer to prevent the unit coming back, (which could cause your pay to suffer). "A happy tech is a productive tech)".
    Companies as shown in this video hire immigrants because these employees are not familiar with the "way things are done here" in a free market economy. They will keep them isolated and have an immigrant supervisor so they will toil in silence. My GF is Vietnamese, and these crappy jobs are still better than what you will get in HCMC, Vietnam. She speaks English, went to school, and surpassed me with regard to income. Vietnamese, in my experience, are excellent workers.

    I am slow and meticulous, I can get stuff done perfectly, but it also takes me 2-3 times as long. When I worked at a convenience store, I was the best cashier and was able to ring up more people in a shorter amount of time than most (while having a drawer that was perfectly counted), but it took me much longer to stock and clean. But they wanted everyone to be equally good at all 3 aspects, so I was let go. I know I have these issues, and I also know I'm slightly autistic, but I also never told employers about my disabilities.

    I'm still working thru this video an the other one on CSAT an wished to chime in on something. First, there is a requirement that ANY person who works on an Apple product for warranty an/or authorized service must complete the required certifications that Apple requires. Second, any repairs MUST follow strict guidelines for testing before said item can be certified as repaired. Based upon what I see here all it would take is for someone to report them to Apple and they'd get their AASP certification revoked at worse or fined at best.
    The only way I can think of that they're getting around these requirements is having a handful of certified techs submitting all of the part orders and testing since both need to be tied to a Technician account via GSX. Basically they let a non-certified person do the repair, they run MRI since it's required to order the service part, and then pass it up to the certified tech to complete and ship. You typically have a 5 business day window once you receive a service part from Apple to send the defective part back so that you do not get billed for the full cost of the repair part. Of course it is possible the company just simply buys the parts in bulk, which is NOT cheap, and bypass that but that's a LOT of money they're eating up front to do that.
    I could go into further detail on the repair side of all this but long story short CSAT is playing with fire. If Apple catches wind that they're not following process, and it gets reported widely that they're using this kind of labor practices, Apple will stomp them like a bug and a lot of people will lose their jobs.
    What really worries me is that should any of this happen Apple will probably go on a witchhunt for other AASP's that may be violating their agreement. An believe you me that's not something anyone wants so I'm really on the fence on this.
    TL;DR Screw you CSAT because you're probably going to make it bad for the rest of the GOOD AASP's out there because you're jerks. >_

    Louis, I am from the area this guys is talking about. And that flood was a record breaking flood that year. I live 45 minutes outside of the city and was stranded for 5 days at my home. And friends from work was stuck at work around the clock. No change of cloths. They did shower, but put back on the same cloths. For the 5 days. The company I worked for paid everyone. Including people stuck at home. The only difference was. The ones stuck at work got paid around the clock even while they slept. Which to me shows a great interest in moral for the employees. Also, the company did some kind of loan plan with employees that had homes flooded out. Plus time off with pay to take care of their families.
    We had interstate highways under "20 plus feet" of water. I am not exaggerating one inch. The winter we had was in the 20s. Which it not very common here and has only happened 3 maybe 4 times of my life so far. And I have lived here since I was born. So just by seeing that information in this guys answers. He is telling you the true.

    I imagine a lot of people are confused about the way these CSAT people run their business, at least the management side of things. It doesn't surprise me at all. The way they operate is textbook. During the 1980s there was a bit of a boom in creation of new management 'techniques' and styles, and many books were published. Many of them were extremely similar and contained a lot of the same advice to people wanting to run businesses. Most people figure profit is priority #1. That's not true. Profit takes a back seat to controlling the cost of labor (wages). Profit is #2. The cost of labor is bigger than just your business. If you do things that raise wages, it will spill over and raise the cost of labor for everyone else in your area at a minimum. This is why even companies like Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, and other giant tech companies that were just swimming in money in the late 1990s engaged in illegal wage-fixing schemes by cooperating and agreeing not to recruit each others employees (and they got busted for this in court and fined hundreds of millions of dollars... which was only a drop in the bucket of what it would have cost them if the engineers they were hiring were fairly paid).
    In order to make managers, who start out people just like anybody else, more accepting of this sort of thing, you'll find pretty much every book written since then will, within the first dozen pages or so, include the claim that employees don't even WANT higher pay as much as they want something else - either recognition or to believe their work matters or some other non-monetary bullshit is more important. They also include the admonition that if a person in your company becomes important, they are a liability. They openly advocate that if someone performs well enough that the organization would suffer if they left, you should fire them immediately. Their reasoning is that if you permit that person to stay, the business will only become more reliant upon them. Eventually, they will ask for more money. Since you can't do that as it would raise the cost of labor, you would have to let them leave at that point and the damage would be even worse. So it's better to fire them up front and handle the fallout before it reaches that point.
    Employees (sub-executive-level ones) must be as interchangeable and disposable as possible. In order to facilitate this, everything must be reduced to a checklist. This also helps with collecting metrics and the like, but the main goal is to be able to handle less experienced people and reduce the amount of training needed in order to control the cost of labor. It is entirely acknowledged that this approach will lead to 'wasteage' and that your business won't be able to handle challenging jobs that require creativity and intellectual investment. That is an acceptable loss. The alternative is an increased cost of labor, which is not even considered as a preferred alternative to closing the doors and shutting down the business entirely. Executives in the corporate world are not hampered by having business bankruptcies and closures in their career. Having a reputation for driving up the cost of labor, however, will get you blackballed in a heartbeat.
    Also, the employee who spoke with you had better be EXTREMELY careful in talking about unionizing. The days are not past that such a thing can draw actual violent danger, especially from someone like CSAT. If they hear people are talking about organizing, especially in a 'right to work' state, just watch as cameras magically grow from every surface, all communication is limited and monitored, and anyone seen as potentially interested will be fired if they're lucky, visited at home if they're not.

    Hi Louis. I'm an immigrant that mostly works shitty jobs for shitty pay in UK. Now i don't know how things work in USA but in UK the shitty sweatshop jobs are usually self selecting. A brit comes in to a job sees the bad working conditions, works for 2 hours, goes out for a smoke never comes back( unless they are disabled or have their emplyability affected in any other way) . Immigrants usually don't have that choice. But in the end anyone can apply for those jobs, and are equally as likely to get one. So i doubt CSAT is employing people any differently mainly because they don't have to.

    I used to work for csat for 2 weeks for training. I was 18 at the time and still in college. I chose Saturday classes to fit in the full time work load. However for whatever reason they decided to have people work from monday to Friday one week and tuesday to Saturday the next. They split the work force into two groups and have them alternate between that. The second they heard I had Saturday classes they basically let me go because of this scheduling change they never mentioned in the interviews. They couldn't work with me and have me just work Monday through Friday because it was mandatory to alternate weeks. I'm my two weeks there tho the conditions inside were kinda dread. Everyone looked so dead (didn't help that most of everyone were older Vietnamese people), no one could talk with each other for more than a minute. No sort of music or phones or absolutely anything from outside the company allowed on the floor. Training was long and consisted of "just keep taking apart and putting together this Mac for 8 hours". The people I kept in touch of after I left said they left after a couple of weeks because it was plain garbage.

    Hi Louis,
    The part about meeting the numbers is the biggest problem in the service industry is the fact that although the companies providing services give you all the spiel about customer satisfaction and customer is king but even in tech support or claim processing the people who take maximum calls, which can only happen when you do not do what you are supposed to, which is taking information in detail or help the customer solve his problem. The max calls guy is applauded and given rewards while the ones trying to do what they are supposed to are told to learn from the max calls guy.

    Taking advantage of immigrants in tech has a long history.
    Back in the early 80's I worked as the Production Supervisor at a consumer electronics manufacturer that needed to ramp up production by 250% which required many new hires.
    All the new hires were Vietnamese women that wanted this work bad enough to line up at the front door of the plant before shift every morning.
    Upper management created a new classification for these hires in order to pay them less than current rate for assemblers.

However, there are some that ride this train as far as they can and do not get a damn about anyone except themselves and just create more problems within the company than solutions. Somehow some of these people seem to be stayed employed because they either know how to bullshit their way out of a situation or make themselves look so busy that they don't have time for anything else. They also manipulate numbers on jobs to make their budgets look good and get bonuses they don't deserve. I have worked in both good companies that started out great when they were smaller and shit companies that are a corporate money gravy train.

    So I was offered a job through a temp agency (As I am new to the IT field) I took it with little to no thought about who the actual employer was, the agency even refused to tell me who they were sending me to work for until I was in their office with them discussing it. It happen to be CSAT who apparently won a contract to do the Apple battery recall program. Or as they like to refer to it as the BQP for short. At first, after watching Louis's video I was skeptical about actually going through with it. However the first few days were ok, it was moderate conditions even for being in a warehouse setting. The new employee's and even old ones were a mixed culture, and from my point of view the entire setting felt welcoming.
    The first sign of the coming storm was when the new people (myself included) was left to do absolutely nothing for an entire 3 weeks span. We were told to watch a set of videos, do our certification video which took less than 2 days. And then nothing, for the remaining 3 weeks. A group that was around me even looked for something to do but they were out right refused to have us work. Pretty soon we started noticing people being fired for sleeping on the job, listening to music they had downloaded from their mail, and even bringing in cards to play with. Never mind that we weren't allowed to bring any type of device or even a book. I once tried to bring in a set of combs as I do have some long hair and was told to go put it in my locker.
    Ok sure, you're stupid strick on keeping the place a "no distraction environment" I concluded to myself. Now keep in mind the position was for a 4 days a week 8pm-6:30am job. Which wasn't too bad for me.
    As time went on I believe it was about a week after we officially started to work on units. It was at this time CSAT HR pulled us into what they call the "fish bowl" to discuss moving volunteers to the 11am-7pm shift with a $2 pay cut. To which the majority of the 400 something people refused. They needed 20 people, they got possibiliy 10. Soon after roughly half a week later they pulled everyone back into the fish bowl to tell us that they were doing away with the 3rd shift (8pm-6:30am) entirely, it's going to be 5 days of 8hrs and if we can't make the change then we were good as fired.
    Let me tell you they did not remove the 3rd shift. Instead they shifted it to the 5 days, 8hrs of 9:30pm-6am. Which they only needed 20 people for to do closings of the units. I was one of the people who remained on that shift, we are not given OT no matter how many units we have left over, Saturday OT is given to 1st shift, which I have found out. Is where the Asian workers are. That have now started to sleep into the other shifts as the new hires are fired/leaving due to CSAT's lack of care for their employees. A group started to do stretches every hour as it was noted in our training videos. Seeing as we are literally sitting in front of a computer screen for 8 hours a day formerly 10. They effectively stated that the 3 mins taking out of the hour to stretch was losing time in unit production and forced them to stop.
    Let me assure you I am looking for a job away from CSAT ASAP! I'm even willing to take a $2 pay cut to just get away at this point. Seeing as they have no care or respect for their employees mental or physical well being.

It really is like a sweatshop and i only stayed there for so long because i thought it would be the entry level to a tech career, but theres really no where for you to go as a tester because you literally learn nothing about computers from it. A dead end 12 dollar an hour position that most of the employees there are doing. Its really sad

    I work in a grocery distribution center that also has a no cell phone policy. We are allowed to leave them in our lockers and get them out on our breaks. However, most people still have their cell phones on the floor, and management pretty much treats it as out of sight out of mind. This has actually saved a guy's life last year, when he was loading a refrigerated trailer set to -10F and the cables on the door broke and slammed shut behind him. He used his cell phone to call the office and have someone bring a forklift to open the trailer door. Had he followed the rules and left his cell phone in his locker, he very well may have frozen to death before anyone noticed.

      Plus he's probably just an actor. An oscilloscope is a grounded equipment ('never seen an oscilloscope with a floating voltage reference); the way he's holding the probe ground (an alligator clip that doesn't need to be held!), he's more likely to be causing an accidental short to ground at an unexpected place on the board. And his fingers just casually resting on board components makes me ... cringe.

      Dealers charge $120 per hour. There are no numbers to make for tons of profit. They make an absurd fixed rate unless it's warranty work (and they're still paid well, but they don't want to do it). There's no reason to lie and half ass everything. They're lazy, criminals. What they do is lie about the labor and charge you extra hours (aka book time and round up). So they're doing more cars, overcharging and still fuck everything up. They're called STEALERSHIPS for a reason.

      michael lehner Yes, cost of living varies a lot between locations. But tell me, are you working as a technician? How much education did you go through to get to this point? 20$ is less than an uneducated food store worker get paid after taxes here. For that he gets free education for his children all the way through college, even high school, free healthcare throughout his life for him and his children and complete coverage if he lost his job or his health and much more. A complete safety net if you will. And a 5 weeks paid vacation each year to. Even if cost of living is relatively expensive here people have a lot left after expenses. Trained technicians probably has minimum around 33$ not 100% sure though. I had 25$ an hour daytime and 30$ on weekends for driving a truck and truck driving is considered low paying job here.

    • @williamgreen9280

      The port may be broken but the issue is more likely just junk inside the port which interferes with connectivity between the jack and the cable. If you repeatedly insert and remove a cable, that might clear it. The port could also be broken. Maybe it's bent or broken off the board. In this case, you'll need some soldering to fix it. Sometimes, the audio circuit on the board may be damaged. Those are all the causes I've observed. With the last two, you'll probably need to hire a repair because those fixes are a bit involved. Be sure to also check sound output in system preferences. Mac mini seems like a device that may try to route audio to speakers in a monitor or other non-existent audio source. I don't know personally as I've never owned a mini.

    Great Video as always Louis. Many really great points. I used to work for a small ewaste company that people complain about job conditions in some similar ways.
    On the subject of CSAT though, I find it interesting that this company also does repairs for companies like Dell, I wonder what other companies they do repairs for. Because in addition to the "White glove treatment" you talked about, The idea that Apples repairs are somehow better then other OEM company repairs can also be trashed.
    Also for a tech company of its size, the website they host is pure trash....

    When I listen to this, I am reminded about my first job location. 12-hour food packaging at a factory. Working conditions are not so great, particularly if you are a bit too tall for the tables that it fucks your back. Also, you are stuck at a spot for almost four hours standing until your break.
    I've heard that the work got harder with more pressure on being back on station on the dot from break or from the restroom. I suppose not many complain because there are quite a bit of undocumented immigrants who don't really speak English, kind of like the Vietnamese workers at CSAT.

      I can't think of a cashier in the UK who doesn't have a seat available. The fact they are at the register, waiting to take your money, is usually a good sign they are available. My trips to the US always left me torn between sadness at the way workers are treated, but anger at how willing a lot of those workers are to defend the system that abuses them. I have a friend who was arrested for sharing his lunch with a homeless person in a park. Arrested for giving food to another human being? Yet sharing the same sandwich with just a friend? Legal. I have examples that could fill several books... I wish it was going to get better...

    One bathroom (depending on the total number of toilets and urinals) for 500 people is most likely an OSHA violation. Call OSHA and file a complaint. Also certain states have mandatory breaks, and/or lunch if working a certain amount of hours. Check with your states labor board.

    I worked as a repair technician at the dell branch of this company for about a year. I can confirm that everything said here is true, and that it gets worse. I would also like to add that csat has taken zero safety measures in regards to coronavirus outside of adding a hand sanitizer dispenser at the entrance of the building. I quit 2 weeks ago after an all personnel meeting was called, in which hundreds of employees were gathered together in a tightly packed group to listen to a supervisor explain to everyone that they need to wash their hands more often.
