Glad you gave those who are needing the visual knowledge to difficulty and the expected time that it takes to do this injector replacement job. One more big issue that I e found with these trucks is that you also may notice the abs and parking brake indicator lights come on and a DTC code be given for anti lock braking system fault detection, the simple fix to this issue is literally just an incorrect bolt used from factory that doesn’t provide the proper grounding as needed to the frame just underneath the drivers side area near where the body mounts to the chassis. Get a new bolt of better metal that will allow for better flow of grounding to the chassis and it will fully eliminate your abs/parking brake indicator staying on issue and trouble code to ever coming up again.

While I agree adding sealant around the top of the injector connections will help prevent rust from forming and dropping into the injectors next go around, I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worthwhile since most times the only reason those fittings are coming off is to R&R injectors and anything that drops into the screen will need to be addressed when the cores go back for rebuilding. OK, I put silicon around mine too. 😀 Also agree on new HP lines. I notice Rich left the rail connections open during much of the job and as you noted, debris that’s not even visible can do a number on the injectors.

Also, I’m worried it could also be that my injector pump is the culprit. The issue I’m having is my truck is filling my crank case very quickly with diesel. It pours out my over flow tubes like crazy and covers under my truck and the poor person that is driving behind me’s windshield. It’s really bad, like fills my crank case with diesel in just a couple hundred miles. I’m changing my oil about 5 times a week. And it fills up a 5 gallon bucket every time. Do you know of anyway to check the injector pump to see if it has a bad seal or something? Im guessing it would be the seal on the input shaft? It lacks a little power when towing and is hard to start only when it’s hot. And of course it has very low oil pressure once it fills up with diesel. Any help on how to check that would be great. Thank you for your time.

Man it's crazy how truck prices have skyrocketed! All these fan bois building trucks all show, no go ruin it for the average blue collar guy who wants to buy a decent used truck!
I live in Texas couldn't agree more. Basic 15 year old Silverado gas v8 with 200k set me back as much as a 2008 Lexus with half the miles. And the Lexus cost like 50g new. Sucks if you're on a budget but actually need a truck to work...
@@JamesLee-oe7mt It's ridiculous man! I really want a good used truck for future endeavors but as the sole provider for a family of 5, a truck note isn't a option! I'm mechanically inclined but these guys want $27,000 for a 2007 Ram 3500 with head gasket issues! Not this guy!
@@shaunhuckabee5904 If you absolutely need a pickup this won't work, but if you're good with an SUV then I say get a diesel ML 320 CDI. Mercedes actually builds extremely reliable diesels, and the OM642 engine is a tank. Its worse issue is the copper fuel injector o-rings failing after some time, but if you're mechanically inclined all 6 o-rings can be replaced with all related bits and bobs for 50$. It's a small engine but it pulls like a locomotive.
Crazy how this job (& the power difference) makes the value of the LB7 trucks close to half the price of LBZ trucks! I'm going to upgrade my Chevy 1500 to a Diesel and have been going back and forth between Manual Cummins, Duramax or 7.3 PSD. I actually upgraded a 4L65E (used $400) with a trans-go kit and swapped into my truck faster and cheaper than the injector job in the LBZ!
I'm a mechanic and really only work on gas vehicles but now that I'm watching you do all this stuff on diesels and I'm wanting an lb7 and I'm wanting to know how to do all this work on the engine before I go spend the money then something goes wrong and dont know how to do it then have to pay someone else to do it. Your vids are amazing as well love watching them I'm learning alot about diesels watching you
Rich, well before this video I bought an 03 LB7 with 200k on the clock and very bad injectors. I replaced them myself learning as I go, following old timer advice and torque specs carefully. I set the valves while I was there and it fired up ran great, but it had a light haze out the tailpipe. It had fresh oil and a new fuel filter. I had my new injectors tested and they were good. The oil pressure sits at 14 psi when warm, close to red. Sry for the long comment, I was hoping to get your opinion on what you think might be wrong Thanks
I've got a 2002 lb7 that was given to me by a friend who knew I needed a pickup to haul wood. Everything works on it except it needs injectors but I figure after I spend the money on S&S sac style injectors I should never have to worry about them again and will be way ahead.
We do cups on a situational basis on lb7’s. If the cups are leaking coolant then do them. When you’re changing the injectors if one cup lifts up or comes out with the injector then do that cup.
Only thing I saw that I would have done different was those high pressure fuel lines to each injector should have been replaced. It looked like you reused the old lines. I learned the hard way and reused the old lines the first two injector replacements within 60,000 miles. On the third set I replaced all 8 lines for about $600.
I was told from a few different mechanics and injector shops including industrial injection where I purchased my last two sets of injectors from that no matter how well you clean them, small fragments of metal can continue to pass through the high pressure system and cause damage. For $600 I’d rather be extra safe and install all 8 new lines with 8 new injectors. I still didn’t have luck even on the third set after 30,000 miles number 7 started having issues so I sold the truck. First set was replaced at 98,000 miles, second set at 140,000 miles and third set at 190,000 miles. At 220,000 miles number 7 was bad balance rate and truck was hazing bad so I was done spending money on injector issues and sold it
B&K Excavating LLC Mechanics are trained to sell you parts and labor. It’s how we pay bills. Most don’t own a sonic cleaner, or are too lazy too clean them.. lb7 lines are high quality and totally reusable. But if you have the money to burn it’s always nice to have new.
B&K Excavating LLC and that sucks you had issues like that with your truck. After owning and daily driving two duramax trucks for the last 13+ years (01’ lb7 , 06’ lbz) I can honestly say that it’s all about filtration and fuel additives with these trucks, if you don’t want a haze. If you want the injectors to last you must run a lubricity addictive and keep the filter changed regular with a tp3012 and watch where you fill up, many many lb7 forums topics have been started with “hazing after fill up” at a shit fuel station. I’ve fixed many hazing issues with a heavy heavy dose of power service mixed with tcw3 and a filter change afterwards.. if one can keep them clean they will last. My lb7 is on its second set with 270k miles and does not haze at idle.
Fau Q Power service and tcw3 two stroke outboard oil mixed together, Use 1/4 quart of tcw3 every fill up. Super tech sells it by the gallon at Walmart for $13. Mix it well with 1/2 quart or more of Power service. That part is key. Dump it in before you fill up with shitty #2 diesel lol.., lb7’s love it.
Hey sir, I recently found your videos and loving them. Good work. Been looking at upgrading to an older diesel and probably going to pick up an LB7 (really wish these older Chevy's had a 6 cylinder cummins, but oh well). Anyway, I see people talking about how their newer injectors would go bad after a short time, some people say 70k or 80k. Shouldn't they last longer though? I know bosch had a redesigned one, so maybe that fixes it all.
What about the head gasket issues. Then the overheating with the lly. Then the emissions regen stuff with the lmm Where are you located do you do work for other people
It's a crappy engine to work on because V8 diesels are crammed inside the engine bay of round body trucks. If you really want an LB7, take it out of a wrecked truck, and put it inside an old square body truck that has a massive engine bay. Keep the damn thing stock and don't crank up the fuel sky high, and you'll have a truck that you'll love forever.
@@DEBOSSGARAGE Have you seen how the Cummins ISV 5.0 is mounted in the Titan XD? I don't see how you'd be able to work on that thing without removing the fenders and subframe.

All deisel s are junk, the gas motors now come with more and torque plus fuel is cheaper, iespecially ford with there new fuel systems suck most of all, better have a good check book, im going gas
i done 4 of those engines now... the only thing that you did not mention is that you cleaned the tubes ( they get rusty and the rust falls down in to the injectors when removing them or putting new ones in) i go all in and do injectors and tubes cause when your in this deep in an LB7.. it not time to cheap out
CLEAN THE INJECTOR LINES! Inside and out. GM suggested inserting a pipe cleaner into the line and sand blasting. But just make sure you scrape all of the corrosion out of the fittings and blow them out with air thoroughly.
Great video, I dreaded the day mine would need injectors and now it’s here. Started smoking at idle, tried all the injector cleaners that you dump into tank. Had a quote over phone to replace with new injectors 6K, sound right?
Mechnical or VP44 lines are equal length because the injector fires once fuel pressure overcomes the spring pressure on the pintle. If the lines are not the same length, you change fill time, and timing on the engines. That is the one main difference between Mechanical and HPCR injection systems. Full authority timing control.
The only issue with mine was the factory cp3 would not restart after hot. Had like 80k on it. New Bosh unit it’s been flawless. Great trucks last forever if you take care of it
Fantastic tutorial but pulling each injector cup and resealing the tip and new o rings is definitely cheap insurance. When wiggling the injector back and forth to get out, it can break the Loctite and you may never know that it broke loose unless it lifted. Also new hard lines are a must.
i had tried Canadian diesel pro, his lb7 injectors are not bad, bosch are alot better, but they worked, i also got a reman lbz injector from him and 4 months later the electrical solenoid went bad and when i called him he used every excuse to not warranty the injector, i neveer said my truck was tuned but he tried saying that, said GM doesnt warranty the solenoid when they do, i worked there for 10 years, if anything goes bad with the injector they replace it free.
Say you have a southern truck, or western for you maybe? Something rust free. Would you then pull the cab for best access… or is this really a couple hour job for you? I find that rear bolt on the driver’s side valve cover is a real bear. I’ve done pushrods with the cab on, so I suppose I can do injectors too? Would it be of any benefit to lift the cab just a couple inches?
Have you looked at the Cummins Achates opposed piston engine? According to the information, long stroke to bore ratio equates to much improved efficiency. Two cranks minimize piston speed associated with the long stoke. I remember the Nebraska Tractor Test data seemed to always favor the old John Deere two cylinder diesels for horse power hours per gallon. This is a really old engine design, the British had an OPOC engine in a ship back in the early 1900's. You can see the British engine on RUclips videos, it is in a Museum......but today again it is new and wonderful in a pickup.....
Question Rich?? Injectors are 6 months old and oil and fuel mixing again. Not skipping but I'm questioning the sleeves underneath. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
On those bolts with the f'ed sockets, once you do get them out, do you replace with new? I mean you know the chances are you will be back to that engine at some point...don't know if its a bad habit or not, I've sort of got used to throwing them as far as possible to force the replacement...start to twitch just thinking of LS exhaust manifold bolts snapping off...

Have a question have a 2002 gmc 3500 diesel van 340,000km runs and knocks at idle and sputters and hesitates when put in drive. Put back in park it idles really low and knocks hit gas idles back up but rough idle up van runs and sounds great only at idle and noticed she looses power while driving and hesitates. No engine codes at all when scanned. But white black smoke while under load. I’m stumped weather I need a injector job or FPR replacement.
Could a bad injector lead to low compression in a cylinder? Along with extra fuel in the crank case …it has a whole bunch of blow by all of a sudden. Thanks
Just picked up a O2 LB7 with 250 K on it. Was running great, started smoking at idle and cruising speed badly, Knocks at idle a bit too. Idle won’t stay consistent and all balance rates are at zero. Command rates for one, two, three and sevenarezero arrest jump around, injectors the only thing it could be? Thanks in advance

2001 have an issue with p0093 for some odd reason, usually hits 3rd gear, feel it buck a bit then check engine light comes on and limp mode. Changed low pressure fuel lines, fuel filter every oil change and new seals in the primer, still does it occasionally, just have to stop cycle the key and it goes away. Could probably fix it with a lift pump, and this truck is stock as the day it came from the stealership
@@kimuhsleinad turns out I had a bad injector, found out through flowtesting the return and it being over spec, I did add a Fass lift pump and it did help but it still was going into limp mode, cheapest place I found injectors was through the Dmaxstore, but don't get injectors just cause, proper diagnosis is key here, it may be as simple as the safety plug having an issue

Is the insane prices of new trucks that's ruining the used truck market.
This new background music is NICE
Your vids are amazing as well love watching them I'm learning alot about diesels watching you
Thanks. That's why we do it!
Sry for the long comment, I was hoping to get your opinion on what you think might be wrong
Thanks
How much did you spend on injectors? Check your balance rates with a scanner
@@DEBOSSGARAGE Around how many miles the injector usually fail pls?thanx!
I've got a 2002 lb7 that was given to me by a friend who knew I needed a pickup to haul wood. Everything works on it except it needs injectors but I figure after I spend the money on S&S sac style injectors I should never have to worry about them again and will be way ahead.
at how many miles u had to do them pls?
Getting ready to do these myself on an 02.
When’s the ideal time to do cups as well?
We do cups on a situational basis on lb7’s. If the cups are leaking coolant then do them. When you’re changing the injectors if one cup lifts up or comes out with the injector then do that cup.
Thanks man
Only thing I saw that I would have done different was those high pressure fuel lines to each injector should have been replaced. It looked like you reused the old lines. I learned the hard way and reused the old lines the first two injector replacements within 60,000 miles. On the third set I replaced all 8 lines for about $600.
B&K Excavating LLC reusing the old lines is fine, must throughly clean them first.
Best video I’ve seen yet!
IIRC, I believe the LB7’s were prone to leaking head gaskets as well...although this wasn’t as big of an issue as the injectors were.
I like these type of videos. thanks for making them.
What about the head gasket issues. Then the overheating with the lly. Then the emissions regen stuff with the lmm
Where are you located do you do work for other people
Looking at other engine makes me love my Cummins so much
If the injector cups aren’t disturbed, do you just leave them be, or would you recommend pulling, cleaning and new o rings and loctite?
It's a crappy engine to work on because V8 diesels are crammed inside the engine bay of round body trucks. If you really want an LB7, take it out of a wrecked truck, and put it inside an old square body truck that has a massive engine bay. Keep the damn thing stock and don't crank up the fuel sky high, and you'll have a truck that you'll love forever.
Next project truck is a duramax swapped 64 C10 tow truck on air ride
@@DEBOSSGARAGE Have you seen how the Cummins ISV 5.0 is mounted in the Titan XD? I don't see how you'd be able to work on that thing without removing the fenders and subframe.
Batojiri1 yeah of course cumin's has always been gay though, now they have them in a gay titan.
@@TRX450RVlogger There's nothing homosexual about the brand Cummins, if you wanna poke fun at brands, you can go fuck off to some distant corner of the planet. Because you just sound like an asswipe otherwise.
All deisel s are junk, the gas motors now come with more and torque plus fuel is cheaper, iespecially ford with there new fuel systems suck most of all, better have a good check book, im going gas
i done 4 of those engines now... the only thing that you did not mention is that you cleaned the tubes ( they get rusty and the rust falls down in to the injectors when removing them or putting new ones in) i go all in and do injectors and tubes cause when your in this deep in an LB7.. it not time to cheap out
Rich your the “Charlie Daniels of the torque wrench!”⚙️🔩🔧⚒
CLEAN THE INJECTOR LINES! Inside and out. GM suggested inserting a pipe cleaner into the line and sand blasting. But just make sure you scrape all of the corrosion out of the fittings and blow them out with air thoroughly.
Great video, I dreaded the day mine would need injectors and now it’s here. Started smoking at idle, tried all the injector cleaners that you dump into tank. Had a quote over phone to replace with new injectors 6K, sound right?
Could you make a video on replacing an injector pump for a chevy/gmc 6.5 Detroit diesel?
Mechnical or VP44 lines are equal length because the injector fires once fuel pressure overcomes the spring pressure on the pintle. If the lines are not the same length, you change fill time, and timing on the engines. That is the one main difference between Mechanical and HPCR injection systems. Full authority timing control.
I’m contemplating wether I should do it on my 345k mile gmc dually. It’s either replace the injectors or sell it and buy another truck.
Love my 270xxx mile lb7, nothing but good to me.
Thanks for the video! Where did you say you bought the injectors?
i had tried Canadian diesel pro, his lb7 injectors are not bad, bosch are alot better, but they worked, i also got a reman lbz injector from him and 4 months later the electrical solenoid went bad and when i called him he used every excuse to not warranty the injector, i neveer said my truck was tuned but he tried saying that, said GM doesnt warranty the solenoid when they do, i worked there for 10 years, if anything goes bad with the injector they replace it free.
I remember seeing plenty of these brand new as a kid.
Love the engine builds
Question Rich?? Injectors are 6 months old and oil and fuel mixing again. Not skipping but I'm questioning the sleeves underneath. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Great quick informative video.
On those bolts with the f'ed sockets, once you do get them out, do you replace with new?
I mean you know the chances are you will be back to that engine at some point...don't know if its a bad habit or not, I've sort of got used to throwing them as far as possible to force the replacement...start to twitch just thinking of LS exhaust manifold bolts snapping off...
hi,i found a nice clean ´`2 2500 4x4 truck with 380k km,injectrors were done at 340k and all normal maintaince, how much is too much kilometers on those engines ? does it have some life left you think?
thank you for any answers!
Can the head bolts be retention ,as a very slight oil weeping from it .on my 2002 LB7 duramax
Do you have to program the ECM for the injectors?
Is it worth filling the heads of the allen bolts with copper slip or something to stop them rusting?
Awesome! OT: Is it a waste of effort to bore/stroke a Cummins 12v? Can it be done without sacrificing longevity?
How do u determine which injector is bad ? U use balance rates ?
Thanks
So u don’t torque the valve covers until an hour after u put them on ?
Thats what she said @10:28
someone had to say it
Just picked up a O2 LB7 with 250 K on it. Was running great, started smoking at idle and cruising speed badly, Knocks at idle a bit too. Idle won’t stay consistent and all balance rates are at zero. Command rates for one, two, three and sevenarezero arrest jump around, injectors the only thing it could be? Thanks in advance
When you do injectors on an LB7, do you replace the high pressure lines?
how did these injectors hold up from canadian diesel pro?
Great Vid! Your toughts so far on those reman injectors ? I know that canadian diesel pro sell relatively cheap reman ones
What numbers should I see on a scanner to know what injector is good and what one is bad on the balance rates???
You are always 1 broken bolt away from having to pull the motor....that’s is what keep mechanics up at night.
Is this something I can do as a novice at home? Also what is a typical mechanic bil for this?
Do you gain my power if you upgrade your injectors to a higher flow set.
any reason why you didn't replace the injector cups?
PLEASE HELP! Any advice on how to get stuck torsion bars out on my 1 ton sierra? Truck originally came from Canada so I figure you'd deal with the same sort of stuck. Have tried heat, sledge hammer, different penetrating fluids and air hammer. All to no avail. Any ideas appreciated! Thanks.
Can you replace the head studs without taking off the heads ?
My head gaskets are not blown but I want ARP studs on mine while a mechanic is replacing my injecters.

Rich, are all of Canadian Diesel pro's LB7 injector options good?
Should i go 2nd gen p-pump or 3rd gen common rail? And why?

You guys have some nice diesel trucks over there :)
How is this job on a Chevy Express or GMC Savanna?
2001 have an issue with p0093 for some odd reason, usually hits 3rd gear, feel it buck a bit then check engine light comes on and limp mode. Changed low pressure fuel lines, fuel filter every oil change and new seals in the primer, still does it occasionally, just have to stop cycle the key and it goes away. Could probably fix it with a lift pump, and this truck is stock as the day it came from the stealership
same here its a 2001 with the same problem, read lots about it online. i was gunna try a new cp3 pump next.
Have a 2002 2500 HD LB7 with a six speed standard but needs a water pump needs a frame
Thanks for the vid Rich. What do you use to check the injector balance rates

Nice truck, but Id go Dodge Ram first - Cummins is easier to work on.
