I like to imagine that, whichever the player controlled monsters count as (probably Husk), the black goo specifically evolved into solely to fuck over the team that arrived post outbreak.

While those monsters are currently not canon (as per my discussion with the writer, they're just a gameplay mechanic) I like that headcanon!
