As a stills photographer, it seems to me that Canon have spent a great deal of time and effort adding new features and improved capabilities to the R5 that I simply don't need or want. Having read through all the specifications, this is my shortlist of things of interest:
    1. Continuous shooting is now customisable in fine increments between 1 and 30 FPS. This is a big deal. I'm not so interested in the 30 FPS, as I am the user control. Being able to select 3 or 5 FPS, for example, would make continuous shooting really useful. This goes to show you don't necessarily need a huge R&D budget when you can instead just listen to what your customers want. Canon could of course do the same with self-timer shooting, which only offers 2 or 12 second options. In nearly all cases for me, 2 seconds is too short, and 12 is too long. How hard would it be to throw in a custom timer option, ranging from 1-99 seconds?
    2. Up to 1/32,000 electronic shutter. My very first digital camera, an Olympus C2500L from 1999, had an electronic shutter limit of 1/10,000 second. What has taken Canon so long?
    3. Neural network noise reduction. I don't know how well this will work, but it sounds useful. I think this was one of the features Canon was going to charge for as a subscription service, but thankfully dropped that idea and threw it in for free. I would certainly try it out.
    4. Neural network upscaling. Not sure how useful this will be, as it can be done in post anyway. A nice-to-have though, possibly. I've seen no mention of IBIS Hi-Res, which the Mark I does, so I don't know whether neural network upscaling is a replacement, or whether we get both. I find IBIS Hi-Res useful on occasion.
    5. Up to 30 second electronic shutter. I find the 0.5 second limit of the Mark I most inconvenient, so I'm glad to see that restriction removed. Could Canon fix that in the Mark I as a firmware update, perhaps? Or do they just want to sell the Mark II instead?
    6. Eye-control AF. How useful this will be depends on how well it works in practice. I notice this feature depends on physiology, so it's not for everyone.
    7. Pre-continuous shooting. Whilst I would have called this "continuous pre-shooting", it sounds very handy for recovering missed shots. Getting the shot is what matters.
This probably isn't a feature, but I would suggest that continuous pre-shooting would also be useful for single-shot image capture. In this case, pressing the shutter button would indicate to the camera that the moment has passed, so save the results to the card and have done with it. That way, you would just take and save the range of images you most likely needed. It would avoid sifting through thousands of images in post, through reckless continuous shooting. Wouldn't that be good? Once again, this could be something really useful, without the need for a huge R&D budget. Maybe even a firmware update.
    8. Not explicitly stated in the specifications, but implied, is better image quality - which is what photography is all about. I assume it delivers this.
So that's it. That's all that interests me. Out of all the things Canon have done, it's not much, is it?
From the above list, you can subtract the new multi-function shoe, which adds incompatibility. Thanks, Canon. Oh, and battery incompatibility, too. "Progress", I suppose.
As I already have the R5 Mark I, I was never going to dash out and buy the Mark II right away. I'll at least wait until the full User Manual is available for download, and read it before deciding. And read reviews. One major reason to buy the Mark II is that I already have the money set aside for it, but given how little the Mark II offers for me personally, it's by no means certain I'll buy it.

Great points, I have a similar thought process. I’m just dreading that the few worthwhile new features (for me: pre-continuous shooting and Eye-AF) really aren’t worth $2500 (if I trade in)-$4500. Just like my iPad Pro M4, after I upgraded from a 2020 iPad Pro. I need to open an MKBHD or RUclipsr video to re-inform myself why the new tech is better, in real life I honestly struggle to see the difference.

If your focus is hybrid shooting with focus chiefly on landscape and wildlife you get a lot of additional features with the upgrade, the AF this time is not just an incremental update, it's quite a few steps ahead of the original, the increased frame rates 30fps in full 14bit along with a higher sensor readout speed is bound to dramatically reduce rolling shutter (the old R5 had a readout speed of ~15ms vs ~6ms on the R5 ii which is great, still not as fast as the Z8 or A1 though which are ~4ms sensors, but the difference is minimal even in extremes) is indeed a blessing. The only drawback for me is the exclusion of an oversampled 4K 60p mode which the Z8 offers . I am in the habit of shooting small 1minute behavioral footages of birds where the 4k 60p with greater detail would have offered very good and refined quality, there is ofcourse an oversampled 4K 60p in APSC mode which will be useful sometimes though. Overall a great model. There seems to be some concerns with overheating with this model as well but the fan is very useful. I know it's an additional cost but if we continue to bother Canon with complaints I am sure the recording times would increase on this one too with firmware.😂 Overall except the minor exclusion of the oversampled 4K 60p which seems weird in a camera that can do 8K 60p, this is a great update. Going to order as soon as the initial reviews come out.

I for one appreciate the upgrades. They brought a lot of new or improved capabilities over the MkI. I have been using the R6 and R6MkII professionally and, candidly, they are enough camera for me. Their price point left me more budget for quality RF glass. Let’s face it, most of the stuff today’s cameras offer isn’t really necessary and we’ve gotten away without it for years. IMHO, the industry is at a point where there’s really very little they can (or will add) to really change the game such as APIs to add features and customizations or theft protection.
I’m considering selling my R6 MkI to upgrade this fall as I want a bit more flexibility than what the R6 offers, and as a hybrid shooter, the R5MkII makes sense. I’ll probably get it over my “grail camera”, the Hasselblad X2D to accompany the R6MkII as my daily driver.
One last thing, what happened to the announcement of new glass that was to accompany the launch of these two new camera bodies? For the record, I’m good on glass, but would love a 50mm and 85mm f/1.4 and a 35-150 f/2.8 (or even f4).

I have an R6 that makes wonderful large prints. 45mp does nothing for me as I never crop more than about 10% and there is zero perceivable difference in even A1 size prints that I compared side by side. What I always wanted and could never afford is a flagship Canon with more robust build and weather sealing and cleaner low light/high ISO performance. So now that the R5II and R1 are out, I bought a new R3, for $3,999 including tax and delivery from B&H, more than $2,000 less than it was upon introduction and $1,000 less than it sold for 6 months ago. It’s AF is wonderful and low light/high ISO performance is stellar. And if I ever have a need for high res, I’ll save up and buy the camera where I’ll actually see a significant difference in large prints: a Hasselblad X2D.

I was tempted to switch to the Nikon Z8. The price is right and, for bird photographers, Nikon's lens selection is amazing. BUT . . . the Z8 is much heavier than the R5 and much larger. You can't use RAW in higher frame rates. And it offers fewer controls than the Canons and some dodgy ergonomics. So I'm staying with Canon. Rolling shutter is never an issue with mechanical shutter and the R5's mechanical shutter is very quiet. While I use the electronic shutter all the time in the R3, I never use it in the R5. I've never touched the red button, so video is irrelevant to me. Unless the R5ii blows the R5 out of the water right out of the box, I will compare the two for 30 days and see which one wins. To be honest, from the specs and the reviews it's a toss up, at this point, which one will stay.

    Simon,
I agree that the 5D Mark II has made some significant improvements for video shooters such as yourself. However, the original R5 can be had new for $2400 and LN for $2100 right now. The focus system for stills on the original R5 is already excellent and when shooting with flash and high speed sync most of us have been achieving great 14 bit sensor images, Now I know that you video shooters are happy about C-Log2 capabilities but you simply can't get true 16 bit dynamic range from 14 bit sensors. You can improve noise reduction and mathematically simulate it. I welcome all of the additions from the R3 camera. The R3 sensor at 45 MP and slightly slower readout than the R3s 1/180s. At 1/160s the R5 Mark II is much faster in electronic shutter readout than the 1/60s of the original R5 but still much slower than the Z8 or even the older Sony A9 II at a higher cost.
Overall, I think that Canon has upped their game for video shooters like you and left us primarily stills photographers unmotivated to spend twice the price of an R5 for the R5 Mark II. The R1 is similar when compared to the R3. Some nice focus improvements but its $2300-$2600 more expensive.
If I was making a living off of these cameras and shooting like I used to at prestigious events alongside other pros I would consider the upgrade but I honestly am struggling to justify these cameras at their introductory prices as a stills shooter when I can get 90-95% of what most people need for less or more from other manufacturers. Right now Sony Bodies with adapted Canon EF-L glass is very attractive and costs a lot less. I also think that the R5 really needs two grips if you are a hybrid shooter. Namely the fan grip for video and one of the other two for vertical stills. That adds another chunk of change when you buy all of those extra batteries needed for some of the new features.
Not what I was hoping for and I feel like maybe Canon should just use Sony Sensors as they have fallen behind.

Hi Simon, when the AF improvements work as good for birds as they seem to do for sports then I definitely want this new Canon tech. But my mark 1 isn't yet 2 years old and swapping would cost me dearly .. When within a year an R7ii comes out with nearly the same tech, I might be better off getting that one for birding and keeping the R5i for landscapes where the improvements in AF and rolling shutter are not as relevant.

I am so confused about the lack of 4k 60p oversampling. The Z8 and even the Canon R5 C can do it. It is just a weird omission in my opinion. I've been testing the waters with the Nikon Z8 and it has that feature so I use that the most for B-Roll. Idk what to do on this one. I expected Canon to leap frog the Z8 or a least push beyond it, but it really is more of a match. It is better in some ways and worse in others.

For me the R5 Mk2 is a mini-R1 with higher resolution. While it does not have 40 fps, a deep buffer (1000+ frames) , a state-of-the-art EVF with improved Eye Detection AF, and cross-type AF sensors the smaller form factor and higher resolution makes for a very solid camera.
My only concern with the R5 Mk2 is the (very) limited buffer of 93 frames with RAW. Canon should do better and provide users with 200 frame buffer especially given the fact that the camera can shoot at 30 fps and has pre-capture. With pre-capture enabled (15 frames), one is left with only 78 frames or a 2.5 sec buffer at 30 fps.
I will likely set the camera to 20 fps so I can have 10 shot pre-captures and 4 second buffer. With that said the Nikon Z8 in lossless RAW only has a 81 frame buffer per the Nikon users manual.

I have reported that many times to Canon within the last years, but nothing happend. We even not get better DR and less noise with the new sensor. If you are in weddings, portraits, product and food photography, landscapes or low light images, then there is no need to replace the R5 with the Mark II. Well we've seen that the new R1 still does not have a Global shutter so rolling shutter will still be an Issue and is preventing it from being more then a R3 Mk II!. Its also 30% more expensive compared to the prior version of the R1 and you can get Nikon's equivalent (Z8 I think) for about 1/3 the price at $2,500. So, I have to seriously consider Nikon since Canon is raising prices and not providing equivalent value compared to other manufacturers at equivalent price points. I am expecting the R10 Mk II to be a minor feature update rather then a total rethink of what a entry level camera should be plus I am expecting a 30% price increase for little or no additional value. This will place it in the $CDN2,000 range from the current $CDN1050 range for the body alone. Considering I can get the iPhone 16 Pro a month later after the R10 debut for about $1,200 and get 80% of the features for 2/34 of the anticipated price. I am also looking quite seriously at the Sony ZV E-10 II as an alternative since I can get third party lenses s for it affordably.Good luck Canon is all I can say.

The R5 Mark I got a HighRes mode with a firmware update. For me it looked like a beta version and I did not understand why the published it. However: As far as I could figure out this mode was removed with the R5 Mark II. That could mean there is a HighRes R Camera in the pipeline. I switched two years ago from the R5 to the R5C mainly because in 8K-RAW 30fps, I was getting overheating warnings. I don't shoot a lot, but when I take a video, I now do it for 90% with the R5C in 8K-RAW 60fps. I really like (at least on paper) the 16-step DR and the AF, including animal-AF in the R5ii. So, I preordered the R5MKII. But I saw that the grip with the cooling system will extend the overheating in 8K-RAW 60fps from 18 to 21 minutes. This is shocking for me as in 4K, the BG extends the record time by a factor of 3x, and in my mode, only 3 minutes... If this is not a mistake, then I'll probably quit my preorder. I could live with the R5ii if it extens the recording time to around 1h with the ventilated BG, but 21 minutes is not what I want. I shoot video and have a GH6... it's def gimped without a decent autofocus... but the IBIS is superior, and I have great glass including vintage Zeiss Jena 35 that is, well... amazing. So manual for ma anyway. Canon is VERY close with the R5 Mark II... but the price just doesn't justify having to switch to RF lenses, new batteries, cooling grip, etc.
Beside... let's be honest. There is one player left to answer the offerings of Nikon, Panasonic, and Canon... I suspect Sony will be announcing soon... and I highly expect the A7S4 or FX4 to simply make that jump that makes people shake their head at Canon. Especially when given the 3rd party lens manufacturers that are pushing out so many fine, affordable lens options.
Bottom line... Canon did release enough in the R5 Mark II to warrant switching to Canon. Instead it's a wait and see for me. When it comes to video, you really should compare the R5 C vs the R5 II because then the difference is not that much compared to the first R5 (I own both). The R5 C already has better dynamic range than the R5, oversampled 4K60, 24bit 4-Channel Audio, the Tally-Light, the new Multi-Function-Hot-Shoe, dedicated photo/video switch, ... and the footage looks somehow more cinematic than the R5 which looks more video like (so I am really interested in comparisons of the R5 C in CLog3 vs the R5 II in CLog2).
The only two things I find missing on the R5 C is the full size HDMI and Canon Log 2... the Autofocus and read out speed I find already good enough... and most importantly I don't want to give up the CinemaOS and that's why I will wait for the R5 C II which I hope will have in addition an internal ND-Filter instead of IBIS.
