The Culpepper cattle company is one of the most authentic westerns ever..
"Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" should be on the list. Bob Dylan wrote and sang "Knocking on Heaven's Door" for the film and also acted in a minor supporting role. Also, the original John Wayne version of "True Grit" won the Oscar for best picture, and his last performance in "The Shootist", playing an aging gunfighter dying of cancer while himself dying of the same cancer, may have been his best.
Although technically not a western 'film', Lonesome Dove should definitely be on this list as well as The Magnificent Seven, a true classic.
"Hell or High Water", a western set in modern times would be on my list.
WellI didn't agree with all of them but The Wild Bunch is on of my all time favourites sooooooo okay
SHANE!!! Has to be a classic
Tombstone was great.
Red River (original, John Wayne), The Magnificent Seven (original, Steve McQueen) and Little Big Man (Dustin Hoffman) make my list. Like all lists like this, all opinions are subjective😉😉👍👍👍
"Tombstone" would've had a place on my list.
Little Big Man should 0n the list.
5 suggestions.(1)-Ulzana's Raid -a tough aged Scout takes under his wing a green Army Lt going after the Apache are raiding and killing. Stars Burt Lancaster and Bruce Davidson(2)Duel at Diablo -a former scout searches for the man who killed his Indian Wife. James Gardner and Sidney Poitier star.(3)-Valdez is coming -Burt Lancaster as an old Mexican American Army Scout who seeks justice after a rich rancher's men tried to kill him. (4)Little Big Man--a 10-year-old boy's family are all killed (except his sister). Raised by the Sioux, he bounces back and forth between the Native Americans and the Whites. Stars Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George.(5)--Will Penny --Charlton Heston is an aging illiterate Cowboy who runs in to Raw hiders. Co-stars a terrifying Donald Pleasance and Bruce Dern.
"One Eyed Jacks" "The Outlaw Josie Wales" "Missouri Breaks"
It’s great to see Jack Bull on a list. It’s one of my favourites.
Along the lines of how you're defining an 'authentic' western, I would suggest "Bad Company" (1972). Good performance by a young Jeff Bridges
... "the searchers "... great cinematography shots ...
That the movies on this list are entertaining, I'm not going to argue. However, to say they are "authentic" is, in some of the films, questionable.
What about A Big Country. Great movie.
I am an avid fan of western movies, but ive never heard of any of these .
The Oxbow Incident?
Silverado would be one of the top on my list. What about Barbary Coast?
One Eyed Jacks
Bingo!
I love "No Country For Old Men" but I'd never call it a "Western."
It's about modern-day Mexican drug cartels.
Dances With Wolves?!?
Good films but calling them "authentic" is like saying Rambo is a documentary.
Christ, what a GAWDAWFUL list. Where is ARIZONA. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Really? Where is Shane?
Authentic? You are using that word, but it does not mean what you think it means.
Are you throwing a little “The Princess Bride” reference in there?😉 Have fun storming the castle!😀😀
And the wild west wasn't more than 35-40 years long so all these characters were living fast and loose and leaving ugly corpses. Dressaicated at least.
No country for old men is horrid.. and Not a Western..hello... Pezx
