Such joy when I opened the package back in December turned to such despair when I realised that Steve had mostly rubbed off. Not impressed with the durability of printing! Was it my sunscreen? If it can do that, I need to change brands! Still a great watch though. Cheers, Jody

I bought my first Amphibia 420 scuba dude in late March and the lead time given by Amazon was about late May or early June. You can't imagine my surprise when the mailman delivered yesterday this mysterious parcel from Russia! (Vostok paid 450 RUB for the delivery, about 6 USD) Only after having a Vostok in my hands and wearing it at home all day yesterday I understand why is there a Vostok cult!

I LOVE Vostok. I currently own 11 with 2 more on the way (and 2 t-shirts). The 24 hour ones are really cool. Makes you look twice when checking the time. They also have some more dressier watches which you don't see on youtube. I've got a couple with beautifull sandwich dials, one blue, one brown. The brown one reminds me of my dads' Seiko 5 tv case watch from the 70's. Really, your entire watch collection could be Vostok and you would still have a watch for every occasion.

I bought a couple of these last year to give away. I gave one to my son who was finishing up his marine biology degree and I thought how appropriate to give him a Steve Zissou Vostok-he loved it (I almost got him a red beanie to go with it but that was taking it too far!). It’s a really nice little watch and runs at +8 s/d like yours, but the ones I got came with the chromed brass crown and I had seen the Watch Geek’s video describing the problem with galvanic corrosion caused by the use of the different metal’s. Meranom do sell replacement stainless crowns (which unlike the original are signed!) for $5 which will prevent the corrosion problem. I got 2 and upgraded the crowns. Be aware ordering from Meranom, it took ~3 months for the packages to arrive here in Melbourne (during our long lockdown). I got myself an Amfibia Reef GMT which I also love and is one of their more modern models but also hard to find in stock at Meranom. I’m a big fan of Russian watches. Where else can you buy an affordable, brand new vintage watch?

Great review as always Jody! Shame about the caseback though.
I finally caved in and picked up a Vostok 710 with a scuba dude on the dial a couple of months ago largely because of your recommendations and it didn’t disappoint (other than the stock bracelet of course 😂 As you’ve said many times, a mesh bracelet is an essential upgrade for a Vostok).
It’s hard to think of another watch that is as unique and full of personality as a Vostok. And they’re so cheap too!
I think of Vostok as the anti-luxury watch brand. They’re pretty agricultural in their construction but full of innovation (in their own way) and they seem to be rock solid for the money.

When you go out for a bicycle ride wear a Garmin Instinct. You can then track your ride on GPS for automatic export to Strava if you wish. While you're recording you can also keep an eye on your heart rate which is a valuable training metric. For that purpose, at least, it's the ultimate tool watch.

I don't usually wear sunscreen here in Boston, but usually I take an annual vacation in Florida, and I wear it there, usually very ordinary sunscreen I get at either Costco or Walmart. A few years ago a friend was going to take me out to a nice dinner there, so we went shopping and I bought a nice outfit, because I hadn't bought one. We had our dinner and that was nice. After when I took the new clothes off I noticed they were orange on the inside (they hadn't been when I put them on), and after a few years of washings they still have bits of orange on the inside.

The Crystal being Acryllic is part of that water proofing, the Dome is cut so it flexes with the pressure into the case increasing the seal, Glass and Sapphire just wouldn't flex enough to do this so it's the rare occasion Acryllic is best.

It’s one of my favorite movies, so my Lady Acquaintance got me one for Christmas. Since they were sold out on meranom, she scored the last one available on Amazon, and ordered the case back from meranom. For some reason they sent two, although she only ordered one, so I’ve got a backup. But I’ve been wearing it since February, and no problems with the back so far, and it’s pretty much my daily wear these days. The real downside I have with it is it tends to lose a lot of time. I have to reset it every day :/

I have a bunch of these, mostly vintage Amphibias. The fun part is ordering them from an eBay seller in Ukraine and playing "Does this go with that?" when you get the watch.

Ah, the much-cussed and discussed Vostoks! Personally, I think they're fun in their somewhat clunky, unsophisticated, made-in-a-tank-factory looking aesthetic. They're also inexpensive and keep pretty good time. The one downcheck for me is that the lume is nothing to write home about. Oh, and I agree that their bracelets suck wind. I have three Vostoks: a green-faced Scuba Dude, that 24 hour Kommandirskie you showed, both automatics, and a mechanical Kommandirskie; NATO and silicone bands for all.. The Zissou looks like another likeable entry in the line-up. Thanks for another entertaining and informative video, Jody!

Did you notice the pulsing second hand in the sped-up footage? Amazingly, but of my Vostoks keep decent time on a day to day basis, but the pulsing is something I have noticed before.

Late to the party but I wanted to put my 2 cents in minor defense of the Vostok. I used to work for a consumer electronics company often associated with fruit.. Sun block / Sun screen was one of the house hold chemicals used to test the durability of the products and it doesn't play nice with product finishes. As you have no doubt concluded it's best avoid getting sunscreen on products as a matter of habit. Yes it would be nice if Vostok had made it more resistant to chemical attack but then again if you ask most Vostok engineers about "sunscreen" their answer is probably is "what is this sun and why does it have a screen?".😂

A bit late to the party on this one, but sunscreen and paint / lacquer coats are mortal enemies. Ask anyone who has had their kids handprints etched into their car’s paintwork. I have had that pleasure, and it’s a nightmare to remove. The main reason for sunscreen staining a car’s paintwork is two of the main ingredients used in most sunscreen formulas - polyethene glycol and titanium dioxide. These are designed to reflect light and protect us from UV, but when accidentally put on a car’s paint, it will leave that white residue and if it’s left too long, it can damage the paint. Usually, the longer that this residue is left on the car, the worse the damage that will be caused! The oils in the sunscreen have begun to bond and penetrate the paint (Thank you to Mr Google for the explanation). I’m guessing the sunscreen has reacted in a similar way on the etching on you watch case 😢

Iain M. Banks on your bookshelf! You are my kind of watch guy! I owned the Zissou too and I bought it years ago but I gave it to my brother. I thought I would love it for the same reasons you mention in your video but I couldn't escape the feeling that it was just okay and I didn't end up loving it. Not loving it isn't entirely Vostok's fault though. I also got an Alpinist about a year or so afterwards and I just found the Seiko so much better that in the end the Zissou didn't have a chance. So, the Amphibia is probably a solid, tried and true design at a great price, but in the end it couldn't overcome Seiko quality. Some may find this an unfair comparison based on a difference in the price point, which I admit, it's just that in my experience I ended up giving up on the Zissou, not having been enamored of it as much as I expected to be.

The hat looks good on you! You should try the Neptune GMT with the small seconds. I've got a white dial version and I love it. But if you hate Vostok bracelets (and the one on the Neptune is not as bad as some I've had) be sure to order the adapters with it so you can swap to a band or regular bracelet. And hey, the bezel works fine for timing on the BBQ.

I have a green 420 which says Komandurskie on the dial but is definitely an automatic Amphibia as I have not wound it or reset it since I bought it. It's on a chain mail bracelet which I love with a fold over clasp. No branding on it. Keeps perfect time.

Similar issues with the stuff previously stated of course but if you get sun cream on old style cameras/ phone cases and probably lots of other things beside it will strip that Finnish off. If applied,I'd wash my hands / wrist before anything other than an old beater watch went on my wrist.
