FANTASTIC show for a dirted tank. GREAT tips. My shop had your plants in 200 dirted tanks. WOW!! I have eleven dirted tanks now that are 10 yrs old. NOTE: Sand is far superior to gravel as a cap for dirt. No need to drain and refill.
@@Dustinsfishtanks anaerobics are natural and normal with an adequate cap. The gasses released are not toxic. In a month all of the anaerobics are burned off and the material is rendered chelated. Making it available to plants as nutrition. I have used this system for nearly 20 years and have only had one failure out of hundreds of aquariums - with those following my procedures more than 1,000 . I have absolute confidence in the use of any sand that is not sooluble regardless of its size.
I found an aquarium in Manhattan last week. Beautiful shop. They had a whole set-up of just plants, all from you. I had to pick up a few for my new dirt tank I set up. I’m very excited to have plants from one of the best!! Thanks
Take it to the next level!!💪🌿 You go girl🙌👍 I'm preparing for it in the near future! I have a low tech deserted planted tank with a beginners plant package from Dustin and it's doing well! 💪🌿💚🌿🐟🌿
what i do for my water in my tanks, i have a river nearby, it gets fresh spring water from the earth everyday, so no polluants in it really, and that water works great with all of my fish.
I watched the OG video of your neighbor and you setting up the tank! I forgot about it. Let us know how the plants grow and if she's happier being dirted! :D
Dustin this is a cool vid. Made me think about something. I'm about to re-scape a little 10 gallon. Full aquascape. It is dirted and capped. The gravel will be pushed back and high. Should I mix the dirt in with the gravel? It'll be capped by aquasoil and cosmetic sand. Only running for a year so I think it's still viable. I wanna keep that dirt is all!
I may try this again later, but it was a bad idea for my first tank. I was so focused on organic and low phosphate that I missed the perlite. I've been using a turkey baster to suck it off the surface. Then I bought a super high tech lighting system, but the blue tooth requirements are so high that I can't find a phone that can handle them so they are stuck on high with no way to dim. Then I added Corys who dig all night. So this whole aquarium venture has been a nightmare. Soon I'm taking it down and just using sand and fertilizer for a while. I just need to be able to sit back and enjoy it for awhile.
Old guy here. I've been using sand and root inserts for decades. The same sand has been re-used for many set-ups and never washed. It's not as messy as dirt when you tear it down.
@@Dustinsfishtanks Hits and misses. Currently Red tiger lotus, crypts and vals are going crazy, Swords have holes and stems are no go. I don't dose though.
I hope she doesn't have any cuts, that can be a nasty infection. I had to use pool filter sand due to living in the desert. Dustin, this would be a great opportunity to show pumps and gang valves and explain the difference between pumps.
What's up Dustin have a question for you the water that comes out of my tap is very hard and alkaline what kind of aquarium plants do best in hard alkaline water great video Dustin thanks

is it safe to use organic compost/dirt substrate covered with gravel for cory dora tank? . I heard the compost is very rich in nutrient.. is there a chance cory would end up sucking particles or concentrated compost water..
So I used aquarium soil (it's a Japanese brand of bio soil that helps break down waste from what I can translate...) is that kinda the same as dirted? Or is this b/c it's different nutrients all together and actual dirt? My plants seem ok in the aquasoil so far. I don't use fertilizers. I have crypts mostly, some epiphyte plants, and some random ones that I don't know names (again, in Japan haha).
I use organic Peat Moss under gravel in all my tanks. Plants grow so fast I have to replant after 2 to 3 years. One tank no longer has fish because it is packed with plants.
I caught the chlorine comment, and yes, if there's ONLY chlorine in your tap water you can just let it sit out for 24-48 or fill up a giant tub & run an air stone & small filter just to circulate water & the chlorine will evaporate. But! Allot of town/city water now also has chloramine in it and that WILL NOT evaporate. You'll need conditioner to remove chloramine
And when you say “dirt”……your not using dirt at all but a purchased processed soil type…🤷. Dirt is soil, ground, out of the garden or paddock….natural. 🤷. How about doing a vid using real dirt 🤷 s
OMG! I love Marnice! "There's GOO." "It smells bad..." Hahhahhaa. Best...Video...Ever...! (drop the mic). AND VERY INFORMATIVE!
After this video everybody wants to be your neighbor. Lol! Loved it!

Love it. So what kinda "Sand" ? I worry about people with onyx sand or "play sand" if they get anaerobic conditions.

BTW the single failure occured because the dirt was 4" deep and the sand 2". I recommend 1 inch of dirt and 2 inches of sand.
I love an old school style DustinsFishtanks video.
Thanks.... what makes this "old school" style?
Being back in a fish tank, with hands in the dirt.
Haha simple enough! Sorry for the missing action!
I love my dirted tank! I followed the Father Fish method and everything is thriving.
Me too

Sand and lots of it not rock.

What light is being used on the tank?
I want to make my own dirt. Besides clay for iron what would you suggest I add to it? FWIW, Local water here is liquid rock.
What video has the way to make the dirt they added?

Where's the python man???
very bad idea, you are pouring water from that heavy bucket while using the glass rim as a pivot.
yeah that made me nervous. My husband did that to ours first time filling and I freaked out! It has a plastic rim on it too...
