I just fixed my pixel on my own with your video teardown. Thank you so much! I'm now a subscriber because I really enjoy your presentation style and humour. Awesome channel :D For any other first timers about to embark on your first Pixel 1 disassembling, a few tips to avoid damaging parts: 1) Trying to get your prying tool under the screen at the very beginning was actually really difficult to initiate. I tried for a while like in the video, but then decided to try using a suction cup to pull up on the screen while also still prying. It really helped open up just that tiny bit of clearance, but enough needed to get in there much more easily. Initiating is the hardest part, after that it's just patience and care. 2) On the lower part of the screen, the OLED layer beneath the glass goes significantly further than it appears to! About 6-7mm further! On the upper part of the screen it does as well, but only by a tiny bit, less than 1mm. So while using your flat tool to clear the adhesive, be careful not to go all the way up to where the screen appears to start, you need to stop 7+mm away. I would stop 10mm away to be safe, and 3mm away on the top. 3) Be careful with the heat gun on the under side of the screen. I was blowing heat in once I had a 2-3mm gap, trying to soften the remaining adhesive that was further inside, and it melted some of the OLED, and now I have this bright spot where it happened. Mine's not bad, almost purely cosmetic, but it could have been a lot worse had I not noticed that it was happening in time.
@@solaris7404 Battery I bought 9 months ago died. Got a refund and ordered a new one only to realize I looked at my screen the wrong way yet again. I bought a different phone that is not a Pixel. That's all you need to know. Cracked my screen this morning. Better off carrying around a portable battery if you need to do this to replace the battery.
Hey Zack! would you consider doing a teardown of the Mi Mix once it is available? It would have to be imported, but seeing how a phone constructed out of a ceramic body is built would be super interesting!
@@JerryRigEverything hi wuts.the little black pouch under the battery looks like a black square I broke it well replacing my battery cause the adhesive was so strong it ripped it open and there was silverish liquid in it and the front mic no longer works
I'm a novice at repairing phones and replacing batteries so I was wondering if Verizon would replace the batter if needed. Any info on that? Great video by the way. Very professional and informative.
> "the screen replacement is surprisingly easy - especially if you don't care about your original screen anymore" So right, and thanks for that advice because I made sure to order (and receive!) a replacement screen before attempting a battery swap. Despite practising on a bootlooped device the other week, I managed to again ruin the display while removing it (this time on my main). This time at least, I saw exactly where I went wrong - not only is the AMOLED panel susceptible to pry tools, it'll even crack if you even lay a piece of card into a corner. Bam! There went the display after I immediately checked as soon as I noticed an "oh no" lower right corner breach. I do wonder if the upper portion of the display is as likely to lead to total display failure if chipped? I think I was about 75% of the way to removing the screen, but probably focused too much on not scratching up the paint on the bezel sections and overused my business cards too early. I would recommend working more on the top/lower bezels using the thin pry tool (although I was worried about the cables on the lower bezel this time as I had probably wrongly assumed that I broke a cable last time rather than the panel). As for getting a gap for the thin pry tool. Twice now, I've managed to find a gap on the lower right long edge with a little suction cup assistance (and regular heat, of course). After that, I very carefully worked my way around the phone in both directions using a combination of the thin pry tool, guitar pick pry tools and cards to hold the gaps open. Remember of course to have a *little* bit of charge in the phone to test the display regularly to learn when the mistake will be made. Overall though, my battery (and screen) swap was a success. And hopefully next time I'll be more improved!
Zack, you see, I told you. but my only concern It's a china only and limited quantity, so I hope he can put his hands on a one or two, at the end of the day, he's Zack, so he should ; )
Just a tip, avoid using something aluminum (such like the tool used in the video) it'll scratch the frame if you're not careful. Once you have heated the adhesive try using cards or even guitar picks all the way to avoid damaging the frame.
"We will find out what's inside a pixel" and I expected Zack to give us 3 subpixels inside lol But for real, why it seams to m3 that Iphones are the only ones where replacing the display and battery is no big deal? With the Pixel you need to remove the screen and then the MoBo to get to the battery, for the Galaxy you'll need to remove the backplate, battery, and all other components to free the screen.
Hello Jerry... There is no link for any replacement batteries in the description of this video.. would appreciate if you replied with the link.. coz I have two series one pixel & xl would love to connect anyway possible
I'll send one it's $10 it has a super long life it's upgraded just put it in my phone charges faster and almost 2x longer than old one more than 24 hours for me and I use my phone alot
Well poo. Got the screen off without mangling the black screen part, but ended up shoving my pry tool into the bottom too far and sliced the ribbon cable. Oh well, the battery was at its end anyway, and your link has the cheapest new screen + good battery. Thanks for the teardown, even 4 years later!
Well, I can rest a little easier knowing that most of the space at the chin of the phone is being used. The speaker module is pretty large. Obviously, this means Google made a conscious decision to not have front-facing speakers as they could have easily fit one in (I think it's probably due to it being blocked when being used with the Daydream headset).
Can't really agree with this. Both the speaker and the motherboard in the bottom seem unnecessarily large compared to other phones. Especially the speaker. A lot of wasted space.
You just said the speaker is large which is exactly what I said? The motherboard is at the top actually and what you thought was the motherboard is the charging board, which is also large. I hope you realise that any engineer from any major tech company isn't that dumb to just poorly design things that waste space. I am fairly confident now that they made the chin as big as it is to be fully symmetrical with the "forehead" of the phone (have you ever seen an asymmetric smartphone before?). Also after testing it out at the store (I'm from Australia), it's quite an ergonomic design as its easier to reach the navigation buttons one-handed than some other phones (although only a small effort to stretch my thumb, I found it noticeable).
Great video Jerry! Can you make a video showing or at least a howto, how to remove the glass off of the back of the phone? Mine hit the concrete and cracked the glass and now I'm getting lens flares on indoor photos. That would be awesome! Do you just use a heat gun to melt the glue? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Regarding attaching a new screen or even the old screen again. Don't forget you have to clean off all the old black tape and replace it to get a good snug fit. Just mashing the screen back on the old tape won't be as good and might even come off again. It's about the same with samsung, xperia and ipads so make sure you get that tape with the screen! Cleaning is a bit of a pain but necessary, try using a flathead screwdriver to scrape it with some isopropyl alcohol to loosen the tape up. Dip a toothbrush in iso and carefully brush the tape (do not overflow anywhere so whack the toothbrush so it's only moist after dipping it and keep it off components) then scrape the moist tape off everything. After a few rounds of that you can take some cloth of any kind and use that instead of the flathead with more iso brushing to get a nice smooth and clean surface. Iso vaporates quickly so be aware of fumes. Just don't get isopropyl on the new screen or it might dissolve its reflectors = bright spots might appear on it. In any case, this should get superb repairability on ifixit.
LANCE I have a thing against apple because of the lack of a headphone jack and how they treat their customers. I used to be a fan but it all changed when Tim made the "innovative" decision to ditch the headphone jack just for extra profit off their phones that have been marked up probably between 300-400% profit
LANCE I have an iPhone 5S right now but I'm upgrading to the v20 asap because I have verizon so I can get the v20 and the stylo 2 v. I only want the stylo 2 v because of the stylus that comes with it and I want the v20 because that was my second choice if I couldn't get the note 7
Thanks for the help with this video. I've always watched them but tonight was the first time I've ever used them to fix my own phone. I was able to replace the cracked screen of my 3 year old Pixel. Keep up the vids!
Seen all your videos. You always tell the viewers to remember to place every single screw into the exact same hole that it came out of. For someone like me (non tech) I've have wanted to know why the builder and designer would design the the screws to be different. Have never been informed about this.
Thanks for the video, just replaced my battery. Still going strong! Tip: Use some suction cup to help lift the screen instead of relying on prying tool. Just use paper business cards to slice through the glue.
But be very careful not to touch the AMOLED panel with even the business cards! Especially the corners. Later on, if you can guarantee the cards get behind the whole panel, then it's safer.
I normally have a Galaxy Note on me. (3,4,5,7) But then they starte exploding. So I'm trying out the iPhone 7 Plus... But after 2 weeks, I think im going to switch back to android soon.
Galaxy S7 Edge might be right for you. It should be receiving GraceUX soon enough so apart from USB-C, the iris scanner, and pen it'll be more or less the same phone. Sells new for $609 now!

Hi Zack. This is probably the best video I have watched on this project. So many thanks for this. However I don't seem to be able to find the link to obtain a new battery. Hopefully you can help me out with this. T I A Keep up the great work 👍👍
@JerryRigEverything I successfully replaced the battery and didn't break my original screen! 🎊🎉 Thanks for the excellent video, super helpful nearly 3 years later. Keep up the great content!!
Great, but aftermarket screens use weak glass and are much easier to break than the OEM Gorilla Glass. I fixed a Nexus phone with help from your videos, only to look at it wrong and have the replacement glass break. I found that sellers who claim "OEM" are almost always lying. Repairing is great, but the parts aftermarket works against good, lasting repairs. I put a screen protector on my second replacement and retired the phone to backup duty.
Hi Jerry, Can you please make the "Sony xperia XZ" Teardown. Just watched some of your Durability test videos, immediately subscribed. Great fan. Thanks.
And this is why I'm glad I bought that 2 year replacement plan from Google. While I'm sure I could do some of this, I have a strong feeling I would screw something up or get some crappy parts.
Hey Jerry, thanks so much for posting the most informative and entertaining teardown for the google pixel XL. I was watching this to replace the battery. I've gone through the process and as you mentioned, there is a generous amount of adhesive leading to a break in the potato chip screen. I'm wondering if a) a crack in the screen would mean I need to replace the whole thing. I plugged in the new battery and have no way of telling whether the phone booted properly.... Except for the fact that is does vibrate when I pop in the SIM. So I've gone ahead and bought the replacement screen via your link. b) @ 2:15 in your video, after a removal of the phone body, I didn't actually have any ribbon attached. It looked like just a plastic piece. Did I break something??? The ribbon and component was securely attached to the base of the phone. Thanks again for your assistance and helping revive my phone. Same I need to replace my battery
Meee mines Mike broken
Why do I find these videos so relaxing ?
Look up "ASMR". That's why you find them relaxing.
24ecko no, usually asmr just piss me off
It can be relaxing until you have to replace something in your own Pixel :D
I swear Zack has something against phones with no headphone jack. After all, hey are kind of a standard.
LANCE I have a thing against apple because of the lack of a headphone jack and how they treat their customers. I used to be a fan but it all changed when Tim made the "innovative" decision to ditch the headphone jack just for extra profit off their phones that have been marked up probably between 300-400% profit
The Doctor Yea, I chose Samsung over apple because of the camera and extra useful features. My S7 Edge is the...
BOMB
LANCE The S7 edge doesn't explode. The Note 7 does.
Sebasifas Well, there have been reports of the S7 exploding, it's pretty rare tho.
Congratulations on 500 thousand subscribers!
Keep up the great work!
1:14 ladies And Gentlemen THE SLIMMEST DISPLAY LOL
Thanks for the help with this video. I've always watched them but tonight was the first time I've ever used them to fix my own phone. I was able to replace the cracked screen of my 3 year old Pixel. Keep up the vids!
knew it's an HTC with those huge bezels. Google's branding is not going to fool me lol
actually its an huawei honor 8 fake.....
which is funny as the HTC10 is much thinner (the chin is actually used for buttons like any proper phone in this pricerange should do)
Holy shit you are right Gangstalbert. Google don't have any innovated ideas! lol
YES! Finally! I have been a little nervous for this one. Is that first pry tool the one I thinned down for you?
very blue pixel xl with a black screen here I come!!!!!!
Willonparade85 Please report back with the result 😀
Seen all your videos. You always tell the viewers to remember to place every single screw into the exact same hole that it came out of. For someone like me (non tech) I've have wanted to know why the builder and designer would design the the screws to be different.
Have never been informed about this.
How you know?
he doesn't
google
He messed it up the first time he did it lmao
Very cool. I look forward to a fun little project when I need to replace the battery after a few years.
How do you know the phone won't function with that ribbon backwards?
Hexlattice> duh
He probably did it the first time he rebuild the phone
Either that or he just got documented online.both methods would work about the same.
It's manufactured by HTC, which always has been a terrible phone brand to repair. I always tell people not to buy a brand that can't be repaired.
MoviesAK This is actually really easy compared to every other HTC phone
HTC just manufactured it, Google actually designed everything
Looks like a easy repair if you tell me.
teddyfrozevelt yeah but remember that htc make a lot of suggestion to google
I maybe careful but I've never had to repair any HTC phone i've owned
i simply love this channel
5:55 95 screws (i know 9 t5 screws)
This is so interesting to see. I got my Pixel's battery replaced a bit back but the guy doing the replace broke my screen in the process.
I know the phone is old at this point but I'm gonna do a battery replacement soon. I don't wanna pay the $80 they Google charges though 🤣
Fantastic video. I was looking for the GPS though as the antenna on mine appears to have come loose.
What's your everyday walk around phone? Just curious :) sorry if you get asked this all the time or if you have already answered this a million times.
I normally have a Galaxy Note on me. (3,4,5,7) But then they starte exploding. So I'm trying out the iPhone 7 Plus... But after 2 weeks, I think im going to switch back to android soon.
Haha sounds like a good plan. Thx for the response. :)
Galaxy S7 Edge might be right for you. It should be receiving GraceUX soon enough so apart from USB-C, the iris scanner, and pen it'll be more or less the same phone. Sells new for $609 now!
Well now he uses a galaxy s8+ but I guess he'll upgrade to a galaxy note 10+ in some time
Keep up the very much appreciated tear downs
I saw that the battery is from htc.
S7 edge or Pixel? I'm really thinking s7 here.
jason walker S7 Exynos version.
jason walker s7
jason walker LG V20
pixel. there have also been reports of other Samsung phones catching fire. not just the Note.
Virtual, I'll take the risk and threaten to sue the bastards if it hurts me. I can probably get a free S8 if it happens.
Hey, great video, as always!
One thing though - the "round signal wires" are actually coaxial cables for RF signals, like WiFi and Bluetooth. :)
said HTC on the battery
Ya cuz HTC manufactured the phone.
Then why was it say made by Google
FFs, HTC Just built it thats it.
Google did everything else.
AnalBusters That was the same as a nexus. Another brand made the phone whereas Google made the software
Amaan Ali Google actually designed/were in control of the hardware this time too. Just manufactured by htc
I am never going to attempt it myself but watching it nonetheless because it looks fun.
7 views, hell yeah 😀
You are one of the first ;-)
JerryRigEverything Glad to be one of the first, great video btw 👍
Hey Jerry Rig Everything, thanks for the video!
quick question, is it doable to buy a 32gb Pixel and swap the memory, because with the 4K video I'd like to get 128gb...
5:00 "Beautiful, and always useful, and very much appreciated, headphone jack"
I am yet to get bored of these jokes. They are easy yet so good.
No front facing speakers, not water resistant, no wireless charging, "verizon only" bullshit. WTF Google?
You can get it unlocked from google. But ya, the exclusivity thing is annoying.
how do you even know this stuff?! its amazing!! everything about you is amazing!!!
you forgot the cloth for ear piece! you're going to get a ton of ear wax and dirt in there!
Ill take my chances ;-)
JerryRigEverything what a rebel! Living life on the edge!
Jesse Wood lmao
I'm never gonna open my phone but boy was it fun watching this!!!
Hi
What up!
Zachary Goncalves wow you really are the first person
DrinkBleach1337 iPhone 7 Plus
Man, you are genius. I'm really wondering how you may do that jeweler things. Awesome.
It's nice to see that my iPhone 6s is better hardware quality than this phone
sandeep monish how?
sandeep monish no it isnt
sandeep monish in what way?
its nice to know idiots like you are here
David hunsinger found the google fan
Would you mind posting a full uncut video of these repairs. It'd just make things easier to learn and do step by step.
Thank you for the guide!
Although I was extremely careful, I broke my screen in the process :(
It is EXTREMELY hard not to break your screen in the process...
I did too.. Even though I thought I was keeping the adhesive hot and not brittle, it broke at the bottom of the screen.
@@RedBar3D Yup... Very annoying!
It's probably the biggest disadvantage of the Pixel's :(
How do you know it won't work if you plug the Lego piece in backwards?
I did it wrong my first time. And my phone didnt boot. So I opened the phone back up, fixed it and refilmed it making sure the phone worked the second time around .
JerryRigEverything I bet that was painful to have to open it back up, thanks for the fast reply!!
i knew someone would ask....its obvious
At 2:42, there was no mention of the rod that is attached to a long side of the phone. Is it a spring or a tool? Good video!
Hey Zack do you have any ideas on how to organise your screws during a teardown?
Congratulations on 5 million subscribers :) I wanted to know if I can source a pixel camera hardware and fix in one plus one.... Will it click good pictures?
Please test the Mate 10 please.... really want to hear your thoughts before buying a new phone. Thanks
Keep up the great work you're doing. It's nice to have a teardown review as it give us an insight on how a smartphone is build and its possible weaknesses. Can you do a video of the Sony Xperia XZ ? :D :D :D
As electronic technician. This video is helpful to me. And i am currently iphone 4s can you modify the backlight light in apple logo?
Hi Zack. This is probably the best video I have watched on this project. So many thanks for this.
However I don't seem to be able to find the link to obtain a new battery. Hopefully you can help me out with this.
T I A
Keep up the great work 👍👍
Great video, Wondering if you could help? Is the IMEI no. printed on the inside of the phone anywhere?
Watching this on my Pixel 3 before I replace my Pixel 1s battery and when he mentioned the headphone jack I shed tears.
Love the video Zack! Can't wait till you hit 1,000,000
Thanks man! Hopefully!
@JerryRigEverything I successfully replaced the battery and didn't break my original screen! 🎊🎉 Thanks for the excellent video, super helpful nearly 3 years later. Keep up the great content!!
Nice work!
My pixel is so sluggish and doesn't hold a charge. Wondering if this is worth it? @solknightt
How do you remove/replace the glass screen at the back? You didn't cover that bit and I was hoping you would :( Great stuff as always tho, keep it up!
Thank you. I have replaced the battery and screen on my phone. Your video is excellent.
Found out about your channel from Louis!
Thanks for your hard work, Jerry!
+Gustav Krantz Heck ya. He's awesome. Thanks for coming over.
Hi Jerry, Can you please make the "Sony xperia XZ" Teardown. Just watched some of your Durability test videos, immediately subscribed. Great fan.
Thanks.
Thanks! Managed to change the battery and flex button on my og Pixel without breaking anything! Great video!
I'm wondering if
a) a crack in the screen would mean I need to replace the whole thing.
Eric
