I prefer to remember Richard Burton for his final onscreen appearance as the torturer O'Brien in director Michael Radford's cinematic adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian nightmare "Nineteen Eighty-Four." Because he died during postproduction, his portrait of O'Brien as a world-weary soul rather than a caricature of evil proved to be a magnificent valedictory performance, and the producers subsequently dedicated the film to him in its credits.

He made some wonderful, wonderful movies, but most of them, towards the end of his life surely, were pure for money. Liz couldn't believe that people don't remember him but he was at his best playing the sweaty, compromised clerics he portrayed in Night of the Iguana and the Sandpiper. Great roles but not roles that would play well now.
