- While in Chicago for Vintage Computer Fest Midwest, my friend and I spent a day at Galloping Ghost, the largest arcade in the US and possibly the world. It's a truly incredible place. Join me for a narrated tour.

My brother was one of those people who could play "Dragon's Lair" from beginning to end in one go. People would gather around and watch, especially when that game first came out. It was truly mind-blowing in comparison to anything else out there at the time.
Yep, it wasn't much of a game but people who can 1CC it are amazing. And the Don Bluth animation compensated for the lack of gameplay for many people.
@@PXAbstractionI think the thing that killed laser disk games was 1) the laser disk player technology still wasn't quite there so the transitions to the next animation were sometimes slow or jerky* and 2) to get in on the action a ton of video game makers were throwing together whatever they could get their hands on and trying to cash in and pretty much all of them, with just a few exceptions, were crapola.
* If they had put the videos on hard disk it would have made this way faster, but hard disks were very expensive back then (and relatively tiny) and I'm not even sure video compression had been invented yet so the hard disks would have to hold uncompressed video, which is huge. It would have made the video games extremely expensive.
lots of favorite games here
Whoa 🤯 lot a arcade to choose :000
It's crazy when you first walk in. Don't even know where to start.
pure nostalgia!
Great tour. Great sense of what to do while there and will be trying to get down there sometime in the next year.
Thanks! I hope you enjoy your time there.
I love this place, it's definitely arcade heaven, I take my son every few months
Good Dad!
Galaga is one of my personal favorites. Some of my favorites are from companies like Namco, Atari, Nintendo, Williams, Midway, Seibu Kaihatsu, Capcom, Konami and SNK
About to go again as soon as football season is over.
I was cracking up at some of the games that you did not know were arcade releases. Absolutely not a rip-off for the price..... For perspective, even in the 80s and 90s when the cabs were way newer, very common for "out of order" for some of the cabs- including the ones you pointed out!. Extrapolating for how many they have, it's impressive what they have works.
It is, but at the same time, back in the 80s and 90s, cabs usually weren't down because their CRTs were worn out. And there are cabinets here that have had monitor issues for over a year, based on other videos I've seen. It's one thing to have a ratio of machines that need service, but they need to like, service them. 🙂
Amazing 😮
It really is! I've still got a Moons of Darsalon video planned. I know it's super late, but I want to get a good chunk into it.
@@PXAbstraction in two weeks I’m going to the Spanish version of this arcade which would be about 15% this big only, but still great , I hold local hi scores of frogger and donkey Kong! 💪
Bubble Bobble
Elevator Action
Moon Patrol
Daytona USA , Pac-Man, columns, spy vs. spy, Virtual Racing, Express Rider, Off-Road , Simpsons , The addams Family, Star Trek, Ghost Busters , TMNT. PX, I can go on and on and on :)
Keep going! Did you actually play that weird-ass Ghostbusters arcade game?!
The thing with arcade games I never liked is that they tend to be tuned to be unfair so they can extract more quarters from you.
The vast majority of games could be actually. Nearly all boards have dip switches that would allow operators to change the number of lives, hit points, score for extra lives etc. or just to straight up raise the difficulty. But yeah, some games were just brutal regardless.
@@PXAbstraction Yeah I'm aware of the tuning that was available to operators. But I could never shake the idea that these were configured like carnival games or like casino games to favor the house.
@@Overonator In many ways, they were the original micro transactions.
@@PXAbstraction Ha you are right I never considered that. They even had the countdowns to pressure you to continue by popping in more quarters. These days the behavioral economics knowledge has been optimized to manipulate as many as possible to spend as much as possible.
This is why things like the M.A.M.E. project are so important. Otherwise a lot of these games would disappear in obscurity never to be heard from again.
I couldn't agree more.
@@PXAbstractionThere's nothing like walking through an old arcade with all those great old arcade sounds. Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Galaxian, Gyruss, Robotron, Defender, Berzerk. So many awesome sounds. I dropped by an arcade a few years ago and it was all driving and "Dance, Dance Revolution" type games. :( Funny thing is, back in the day my friend and I used to go to this place called "The Fun Machine" and although they had modern games (for the time) we had the most fun on some old Atari games like the original black and white football (or was it basketball?), top-down with two trackballs. Fun times.
I agree. With MAME, I have the opportunity to play games I have never seen before and games from Japan and games I have no business playing!
@@l.everetttalbottjr.275Yep. I have an older MAME ROM collection and even it contains over 5000 games!
Time Crisis and House of the Dead were always coin sinks for me. I loved them so much!
I WAS JUST HERE THIS PAST WEEKEND
WHYYYYYY, we missed you by like 5 days! 😭
Awesome. There's probably storage buildings and warehouses that haven't yet been "found" ... all filled with machines from the 80s and 90s....seems possible (?) In the future, maybe they'll be the same affinity for 80s Arcade games as classic pinball gets today.
Xenocrisis was released for the Megadrive / genesis
man..I am in France and you Americans are lucky. We don't have anything like this in France :(
It really is like you've gone to (arcade) heaven. Wow. But I noticed they didn't have any electromechanical machines in your tour. I guess they're focusing mainly on electronic arcade games. But I love those older machines, too. And pinball, of course. Man, I'd forgotten there was a Dragon's Lair II. And didn't even know there was an Elevator Action II!
Such a shame so many of the machines are run down or broken. I hope they can eventually repair them, even if they can't get original or reproduction parts.
For arcade games I enjoyed: Space Invaders, Missile Command, Punch Out, Major Havoc, Bosconian, Pooyan, Kangaroo, Donkey Kong Jr., Popeye, Berzerk, Frenzy, Zaxxon, Robotron 2084, Asteroids, Space War, Congo Bongo, Crystal Castle, Final Fight, Elevator Action, Spy Hunter, Terminator 2, Star Wars, TRON, Discs of TRON . . . I'm sure I'll remember more soon, and could go on and on!
Mission Craft is definitely not a licensed game :D
From memory I think it's a Korean-made hack of a Psikyo board. Plays similar to Psikyo games but the ripped Starcraft graphics actually work pretty well for a shmup.
OK, I definitely have to try this some day!
Missile command
I actually just took a trip up here with a friend 2 weeks ago and admitally as much as i loved this place i was a bit let down that several games i wanted to try (Fzero AX, Legend of Valkyire, JoJo FFTF) were either down or messed up in the controls. Would definitely go back in a few years if they announce plans to truly renovate their existing machines
I was so bummed about F-Zero AX. That was the game I was looking forward to playing the most.
I can least say that I wasn't disappointed in their capcom cabinets, they had a Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom which the arcade version is unique from the console port cause it actually had the rights to use anime music from the Tatsunoko characters.
I live in Ohio so unfortunately trips will be rare but I do wanna go back
@@cybershroom9240 Ahh yes, I saw that machine too. I'm bad at fighting games so I didn't spend much time with it. 🙂 I'm from Ottawa, Canada and it's a 12-14 hour drive to Chicago for me, but I hope to do VCF Midwest again and I'll definitely go back each time I'm in town.
@PXAbstraction yeah I've played it via emulation on GX but hopefully they fix it up. I don't think there's any place in the US notable for having multiple AX cabinets

Sadly they don't have some of the machines I have or games. But they are very close to having everything which is great! Support the Doc but really hurts to see people destroying the machines in this museum. Which some cannot be restored cause some of the controls were only 1 shots. But that is the price you pay for having this stuff be public.
What stuff do you have that they don't? I'm curious!
@@PXAbstraction Sit down Night Striker, Savage Quest which works and version 2.1 which no one has. A strange version of Bucky O'hare. Starblade Deluxe (Extra Lights). Always on the hunt for unique games.
My favorites are the ones made by Nintendo.
