- A Cup Of Tea With God” is how one surfer 50 years ago imagined surfing National Park at six feet would be.
It is also the name of a book and DVD celebrating Noosa’s dedication as Australia’s 19th National Surfing Reserve.
I was there in 81 had Teatree at 6-8 foot for a week. Have never had anything like it anywhere since. Just Perfect. I was 19.
There will never be another Noosa Nat park in the 70's. You had to be there. It was amazing
I first surfed Noosa in the late 60's and lived there in the early 70's. I'm incredibly privileged and grateful for that experience and those memories. I've visited and surfed there over the years since I moved but I'll never return as it's become a saddening and overwhelming experience. It's simply too crowded so there is no point. The last wave I had there was from the Pot to the beach in Little Cove with three tubes in between stepping off the board onto the sand. Something we all did many times over and over back in the day. This was a beautiful story about a special place... Saved by ppl who not only love to surf it but also realized the vale of keeping it a wild place for everyone to enjoy.. The fact that the love of a special place like this was saved by those who live, breath an bleed salt an sand... Thanks for showing how to preserve a place so special it must be left wild ..!! ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Thanks for this vid. Love the waves at Noosa always have always will. Great memories driving up from sydney with like minded friends. Via Angourie. All sleeping in the kingswoods. Surf all day together. Relate around the fire at night. At 55 now. No more big waves, with a fused neck still going out for my fix in the small stuff. On a 9'1 mctavish fire ball. Daughter on my old boards. Wonderful stuff
OMGosh, I was fortunate to surf Tea Tree in late 60’s (as a teen)… warming up with tea, scones & cream in that old tea house … fantastic memories … and used to hang out at Haydon’s surf shop … we lived Moffat Beach and so my parents were great friends with Ma & Pa … mahalo nui for this great mini doc!
I was lucky to grow up in noosa in the early 70s..there was a lot more sand around and the beach was huge. great memories and they are still sharp..zinc cream, smell of tea tree, kevin platt boardies, wallace surf board, no leg ropes..and those long perfectly peeling waves.
It's amazing to see classic surf footage of Noosa and to get this little history lesson! Not to mention the spot-by-spot breakdown of all the waves from the pros is awesome! Cheers for the stellar video!
I surfed Tea Tree Bay in the 60s by myself for two days one day with two army guys back from Vietnam on R&R they had one Surfboard between themselves. They had their army shorts on for boardshorts. We had a ball.👍😉😎
Surfed the cyclone swells of 64 and 65 in May pumping everyday. We thought we were in heaven.
I know what Bob is talking about, in southern Western Australia,there was endless surfbreaks,reef and beachies with no one out,just think over 20 breaks in 10 kilometres and under 20 surfers,most of the time on a perfect ground swell 2 to 3 metres hardly any people out,further south the swell would be wasted so we would surf all day at each break depending on wind direction and tide,sometimes the perfection can not be explained because you had to be there,surfing my round tail 6,1 box rails and super lite just brilliant,never will I forget.
I was born in Sydney but I grew up in bloody Minnesota! (In the middle of the states up near Canada) I was fortunate to surf Noosa in the late 90's. I'm so proud of that community for protecting, not just Noosa, but the Sunny Coast! G'day to my auntie Margy in Peregian! I moved back to the Sunny coast in 04 and surfed A bay and Sunshine beach fairly regularly being that I lived in Sunshine Beach! I moved back to Minnesota and leaned that we get pretty fantastic waves (near frozen) on Lake Superior! What a world!
Brings back sooooo many memories of good mates and waves. Wow- legends: Bob McTavish, Ms.Beachley and blown away to see Phil Jarratt- NZ east coast emperor!

What a great place....I have the utmost respect for surfing and surfers. I finally come to grips that i will never be much of a surfer but I am an excellent spectator and love watching surfing.

I was lucky enough to surf there in the mid 80's when my sister moved there. I surf Tee Tree 3 a days in a row. I thought it was perfect. I was told by the locals that it wasn't that good.
Hahahaha coming from Southern California there are very few point breaks, mostly beach. To me this was paradise. How lucky I was.
The paradise the generation of the 50s and early 60s were given - and then sold for coin to every shite people on earth. It makes you want to cry.
What a beautiful example of preservation ! Nature and surfing together... In my home, Reunion Island, surfing is forbidden for 6 years ! Scientists and governement kill our friends, destroy our lifestyle, our ocean ! May the international surfing community help us ! You are so Lucky guys to live in a such amazing and beautiful country. I used to live in Australia, it was amazing !
Great video. Lived there 1980 , beautiful waves all way down sunshine coast. Oh and Sundays sessions at Thommos pub was in sane with hot chicks, oh the memories this vid brought back. Thank God the developers didn't stuff it!

I remember hiring a long board from the surf people in pumicestone passage where the wooden diving boards used to bed
My grandfather used to manage Manchester Unity holiday Apartments
I would use that board to ride the little one foot waves that used to break on the sand bank in the passage

I was lucky enough to grow up in Noosa and learnt to surf at first point. We used to go around to Johnson’s after school and surf awesome little wave . Unfortunately. Some idiot thought it would a great idea to move the river mouth further north . When it was at its original location beside the old woods caravan park at the end of Hastings st it faced back towards the points. . All I remember is the points always seemed to have waves more consistent and bigger Still an awesome location great video
Noosa will become my home break this year, im frothing...gunna be living about 15 mins away! yew!

A truly beautiful spot, unfortunately it was flat when I was there, but please don't ever let it end up like the Goldie, they have trashed the place.
Spent a few days there in 85 and could see it was a very cool place. Though it reminded me of a far less developed version of where I was from, Encinitas. So I moved on, and have often wondered if I should have stayed. This video almost hurts to watch. I didn't even know about the surfing spot around the heads, it was cool just on it's own. That may have cinched it for me.
I'll stop this now and tuck it away for when everyone else goes to bed.🙂

pity you if you knew the place back in the early days, because you'll think that it's paradise lost now. The setup is still mostly the same but the numbers in the water make it super competitive, dangerous. The beachies up and down the coast, when they're on, a much better bet. Do yourself a favour and check out Double Island Point 120k up the coast, on a southerly.

Bob McTavish. Humble guy who would never say he was a major component in boards getting shorter. The would literally get a saw and chop feet off their boards. They bore the short board era.
Yeah some Byronite who moved to Noosa.. a kook. He is the epitome of why noosa is so toxic. Noosa and Byron, two of the most toxic places in Australia. Coincidence the Bobby lived in both places?
Sunny coasters dont hold him in regard, its only a few kooks at Noosa that pushed him as some surf hero, no one else on the coast cared.

Its good but dont forget to mention the crowd the parking fines the bullcrap, i live an hour away... unless its strong winds ill always give it a miss

the goldie has great swell but is an overcrowded shit fight

Noosa was beautiful before middle class Victorians came and bought the place out. Now its toxic. Worse than Goldy and Byron.
