Can An Alt-Board Guy Learn To Ride A Modern Thruster? 'The Mysterious Affair' With Harrison Roach

- Опубликовано: 9 сен 2020
- The dancing dandy starring in the film above is Mr. Harrison Roach, one of the darlings of the post-modern ride-anything movement.
For the last 10 years Harry and a handful of "open-minded" free surfers have managed to scrape livings as an aspirational, relatable, journeyman aesthete. For Harry and surfers like him, their marketability has come not in spite of, but because of, his abstinence from anything like mainstream high-performance equipment, ie. the modern thruster.
And this makes some people very angry.
Many of you watching this right now have long held the belief that the heavily-glassed, elegantly tinted alternative equipment these “hipster kooks” ride has concealed fundamental flaws in their surfing.
"Put these guys on a real surfboard," you say. "Then we’ll see how pretty they look.”
This is what happens when you put one of surfing’s foremost alternative stylists on teamlite foam and fiberglass. Спорт
The take away is if you're a good surfer you can adapt to any board.
yeah but this guy surfs smaller boards often. You can tell. Dont think you can see a true longboarden transition that fast and will on high performance short boards
@@AJ-xi4hb Tom Curren would beg to differ
Not sure I agree, maybe I wasn't as good as I thought I was? LOL
To me, this is what an all rounded surfer is. Throw any board at him and he'll perform. Maybe the most complete surfer these days. Maybe Rastovich can be in that ball park too, or even Mikey Febs. Now, put most CT surfers on a classic log and just watch them fall flat on their stomach as they try to bottom turn to hit the lip...
I agree, totaly.
The amount of style this guy has is completely insane
I know right?? Love seeing actual style nowadays.
Absolutely textbook
Very much waiting for an episode where STAB gives pros other "alt-boards" now.
Electric acid test?
@@valdo9482 I had completely forgotten about them. Thanks!
another amazing video stab is honestly carrying the surf industry rn 😂 edit (before they became pay to watch)
I agree
Whoever does their soundtracks deserves raise... great music
Do u know where these waves ar at
Aye there's little argument about that, especially since the sad demise of surfer magazine RIP
@@saterdee3288snapper rocks and Noosa correct me if I'm wrong
I really like how he can still do nice cutbacks and floaters but it looks a lot more flowy, not that attacking the lip isn’t sick too however
When you are this great, you could ride a," Phone book"...
I wanna see Joel tudor ride a squash tail thruster
I would too but good luck getting him to agree to that lol
That will never happen lol
Lol no you don’t
I seen it gotta say he kinda rips em
We would pay. Sam Macintosh’s dream of making $1mil from a pay to play would come true if that happened
Greasy Video. Love the concept. Harrison is such an honest, down to earth and calm guy - also a very talented surfer. Very easy watching.
Clever idea stab. I was very surprised at the ease of his transition, his feet looked in the right spot after moving heavy foam, he looked at ease carving as well. I’ve found the transition back to smaller boards quite hard, your paddle power greatly diminished, positioning the take-off gets awkward etc. I would’ve liked to hear how he found that experience. Did he get less waves for example, or try to hunt down a peak that he’d normally catch with more foam but couldn’t get there with 27 litres? Otherwise, solid delivery.
he has allways ridden short boards of various kinds ....when no boddy is watching .
It's worth recognizing that not all of his alt boards are logs, he rides single and twin fin shortboards and had quite a few in his quiver
I've seen him throwing reverses on a thruster at Noosa a decade ago. It's not his first rodeo..
Codgerism very true, somehow this is portrayed like it’s the first time he’s ever ridden a hp shortboard.
This! Whenever I ride a short board now I hate not having the foam for mobility.
pretty sick. i like how different the hand movements are that what you normally see on other guys' edits
Love this guy’s style. Instead of being super quick and squirrelly he waits, sets up for the perfect section, then absolutely DESTROYS the lip! Sick video🤙🏽
He also has great movement on the board. Sliding up and back like a longboader.
I’m in school rn but this is more important
same, just saw this, calc can wait
same over ap chem though
@@ericquiggle1736 in a bio lesson love this tho
Me too. I’m a teacher.
I'd love to see someone call surfers like Harrison Roach, Ellis Ericson, Ryan Burch and Bryce Young 'hipster kooks' with a straight face. I love the fact that people are riding all sorts, that's what surfing has always been about, not conformity.
Wow, Harrison, that was some of the most beautiful power and style surfing I have ever seen. And the excellent photography and music make this one of my favorite surf movies of all time. The level of agility, acceleration, and high speed control you had on the JS was off the hook. I also like the way the level of performance worked up to a crescendo of rapid fire spiting tube rides, one after another. and that music. Really made this a unique entertaining experience. Thanks to all who made this happen.
I agree. This is one of the best-made surf videos I've seen. Good story, great music, personable star. It's a hit !
From 28 to 38 I shaped my own boards. Then bye accident I ran out of boards at a beach break known for breaking boards in mexico. Bye chance a guy showrd up with a 6'4" rawson so I bought it. On my first ride coming over the foamball I realized I had spent the best athletic yeasrs of my surfing carear on subpar boards this reminds me pf this sad very sad😂😂😅🏄
Sick video, you've done it again Stab. Great concept and Harrison was super entertaining to watch.. didn't want it to end.
The cheater 5 mini tube on the js was so good!
Up the Noosa Noseriding Native. On ya Mr Roach!
kind of amazing that someone who is so used to walking all over longboards can just plant his feet and learn to air in three days.... i guess that's why pros are pros.
Satanicuslupis he rides everything and is really good and riding barrels(as you saw)
He grew up competing on hp shortboards against the likes of Julian Wilson. He was throwing airs and “finners” a long time ago. Nothing new. Same deal with Derrick Disney and Ellis Ericson and wait for it, Torren Martyn.
@@valdo9482 thank you for telling me this, I had no idea. I guess I need to go learn my history.
I first saw Harrison back in 2008 when he was surfing Alaias for a part in Thomas Campbell's 'The Present' - good place to start.
@@AVOVAMEDIA Dude come on, he may have not had time to watch the whole thing. No need to crucify him for not realising that Harrison Roach was sick at riding performance shortboards...
I'm really more shocked by the fact that he uses a back-zipper wetsuit.....
that fist wave looks soooo good
His foot adjustments are so seamless, translates so well from the longboard to these thrusters
Can one of the best surfers in the world surf? Scientists believe that yes he can.
I've never hurt my hand putting Futures in... just sayiin.
Typical Stab though - don't even get the guy a $30 Fin removal / install tool.
@@dons1932 I thought FCS2 is supposed to be "toolless". Futures or glass ons for me.
@@AJKammerer It's just a plastic handle that you slip over the fin to bang it on and off with a nice flat surface (not a sharp point like the fin).
Please do another one of these Stab! This was a fun but also very interesting edit, especially for the average surfer who won't go out on proper overhead days. Thanks as always!
19:30 Most satisfying/therapeutic clip I've ever seen
I love it! A guy who surf's mostly logs talking about "maybe a little too much volume for me" the day after first surfing that Mayhem. Rad concept this...
@@AVOVAMEDIA cry some more kook
@@cultparade2981 He's getting angry at everyone for no reason... Totally worth checking out Roach surfing other boards as he's incredible but I don't know why this guy is so mad haha
@@joeboonmusic4004 right? Like I literally said 'mostly', which last time I checked wasn't the same as 'only' or 'entirely'. People's reading comprehension sucks now days. The guy surf's a lot of logs. There's nothing loaded about my comment. I'm literally stoked to see Harrison surf anything. Cheers!
@@cultparade2981 Yeah... I think he's had too much internet! Me too, I'd happily watch him ride an ironing board! I love this new breed of surfers that are focused on riding whatever board is right for the conditions :)
The way he rides the JS is pure art
Loved it. Well done again Stab!
Best video I have seen from Stab in the dark. Harrison does rip but he also gets the concept, variety is the spice of life. Performance board, log, bodyboard, body surf, retro, windsurf, kitesurf, foilsurf doesn't matter but just tying yourself to one thing and you will eventually stop surfing. You can't be an expert at all of them and that's what you should embrace.
really nice project. we r used to see the hp guy trying old school boards, the other way around is very very interesting too. well done
Thanks stab, just woke up to this and it made my day.
awesome video, great surfing and soundtrack. Fun to watch, well done stab
Really enjoyed this one. What a dude, such a quality surfer, thumbs up on your choice for this segment.Has reignited my love for the ocean.
Really like his personality and what he said.
This is sick movie.
This was sick! Thanks Stab
Love it! All winners and Harrison Roach was definitely the perfect person to pull this off!
Stab is killing it. This video was soooo sick!
He shortboards better than any pro shortboarders longboard
Damn, everything he does is so smooth. That's awesome!
This was sick. Great work to all involved!
loving these edits stab thanks fellas
More of these videos pls!
That last clip of him riding one of his boards just looks so surreal, its nice seeing that after so many modern boards in every surf video
This was great. Thanks! :) More content like this please. (non-pro surfers experimenting and reporting their findings)
this was actually super enjoyable. love these ideas
I fucking love all of stab's bigger "concept" videos. Great work guys.
If you understand how to surf, you understand how to surf.
Amazing work, No ego or bias. That last pit on the JS is ridiculous btw. 5 stars
@stab you guys are killing it with these vids. I’ve loved every single one. Each one is a little different. My personal faves are both of the Dane ones! Keep them coming
great short film! loved his style and concept was awesome too.
part educational, part inspirational. nice work stab
When you have style and the fundamentals down like this dude, you can pretty much surf anything 🤙🏻
STOP useing your bare hands to fit and remove FCS fins,,,use a towel mate.
This was soooooo cool! Well done stab and cheers to Harrison he was the perfect subject
Would be tight to see one where he rides all the wild bonzers and channel hulls
Nice vid. Interesting take away. The performance boards allowed him to surf technically better and would allow him to make more difficult waves, but he prefers the added difficulty of low performing equipment.
This guy rips on all of it, but it supports my confusion about why low performance equipment has gotten so popular with surfers who struggle enough without needing added difficulty.
Best comment right now. The answer to your question is cognitive dissonance, it is quite regular with people.
@@rasmuszaurins7233 I looked up cognitive dissonance... yeah, I'de say your spot on. haha
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal I don't think the term 'low performing equipment' really suits what you're talking about. He's an incredible surfer and he wants to feel different sensations on a wave. A log isn't 'low performing'... It's high performing if you want to get a noseride... You don't hop on an old school twin fin if you want to be shredding like John John and yet it has something different: looseness and skatey-ness.
I don't like this attitude of a wafer-thin thruster master race, I thought we were progressing towards a surfing culture that said people should ride the right board for the right conditions... If you're out in 2ft Malibu on a tiny thruster, you're not going to be very 'high performance' either. It seems snobbery exists in literally every hobby/sport/art-form...
@@joeboonmusic4004 fare enough. I agree with the "right board for the conditions" attitude. I'll hop on a log too when mushy waves are all I can get and I'm not knocking his surfing skill at all.
I guess I was referring to the increasing number of average surfers I see in my area who bring an old school fish or single fin mid length out in punchy surf and proceed to pearl dive or slide out on their bottom turns and generally need to either bleed speed off to make a turn or can't get the drive they need to make a section.
It's not a "the right board for the conditions" attitude so much as a "I'm going to ride this cool looking board even though I don't make as many waves as I could on a performance focused board" attitude.
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal Yeah I totally get that point. I see a lot of those kinds of guys, I guess they'll learn over time :P I think it's sorting the people who want to learn how to surf those boards well from those that just do it because they watched Morning Of The Earth one time :P
BEAUTIFUL footage and impressive surfing
14:45 that tube was insane
that was about the most spot on ending statement in regard to fin configuration, feel and performance to date, ever
This was amazing .
Insanely stylish. If you're a good surfer you should be able to ride any board - and he can.
Wow, ripping on all those different boards! Very impressive.
Great vid stab and interesting concept. Now try the reverse concept with someone like Wade Carmichael on a log , fish and singlefin gun. That would be very entertaining.
Nice vid... keep spreading that stoke! Aloha
thanks for the great video, great surfer good waves.
I'm 13 and I'm super stoked😂
Amazing concept and video! he rips! just tell him next time that he can use a towel to put the fins on so he doesn't hurt his hands hahaha
Some of the smoothest surfing I’ve ever seen. 🤙
Wait so if he only rides longboards how come he’s so raw shit I just realized I was the first to watch this in class
He not only rides Long boards, he also rides fishes and other alt. shapes
My thoughts exactly. He doesn't. It's clear he has a sick foundation and was probably hi-fi during his grom years. You cannot simply go from hanging 5 to stomping air revs and riding the foamball like that 😱🔥
Really nice vid. Nice to see Harry surf; never really had tho I knew of him. He's got effortless, unpretentious style. Loved how he surfed that downrailed splinter at the very end.
What’s funny is he is riding that mayhem better than most full time high performance board riders I know lol fun video
Top 5 best stab vids of all time
Epic. Fantastic idea Stab. Harrison is one of my fav surfers. Sad to say, but he's landing airs better than Slater.
Now I want to see a pro that only surfs thrusters step on a log. They look easier to surf than they are.
There's a good clip of Mason Ho failing miserably on a Thomas Bexon log ahaha... Worth watching!
good vid! cheers!
dude surfs with more style and taste than most pros nowadays- with more time on a performance he’d absolutely rip. (not to say he doesn’t shred now, just needs more diversity in his tricks)
Wow that end segment!
Was fully expecting him to hate on the boards and be super snobby but not at all what a super cool guy and truly awesome surfer such amazing flow to his surfing, love his surfing love the video!
That was refreshing. I thought M P was back !
This guy surfs great on everything . fun.
Having not surfed for 40 years I'm amazed at the surfing on today's boards. My last board was a 6'10 round pin mini gun, took at least 3-4' Hawaii measure to get it up to speed. Could hold 6 to 8 plus and stable in the tubes but nothing in the turning dept like thrusters.
Rubber mallets don’t suck💣👍! Great video! 🤙😎
That was meant to say Great Video!
Sweet content! By the way, did you feel some differences between the FCS H4 and the MF ones? Less drag or something promoted by marketing guys?
love it, this guys awesome !
Great waves and great surfing 🤙
Did I just see some sneaky "Causey" footage ! :)
Yeah loved this. Left me with that butterfly wanna go surfing right now feeling!
Interesting how his ability to read a wave and be well positioned are what counts a lot here. I've seen guys with thrusters doing way worse for not knowing how to be on the pocket or "time" a wave.
^^^ this - if there’s anything riding a single fin teaches you, it’s positioning - feet position and wave position = flow 🤙🏼
damn I love his end style on turns...does a mini floater slide thing after almost every one
This guy rips, congrats on the air revo. I am surprised how different the shadow performed in a beach break then the js was the best at the point break
Beautiful surfing
What are the music credits for the video. I keep replaying it for the soundtrack!
More of this please beys
i was very suprised to see him hop on and absouletly rip. that guys insane
I watch a lot of " surfing videos", and this was absolutely enjoyable. He,is the kind of surfer that you want to be out surfing with.P.S. he ripped better than many," on the c/t, and just a great guy.
Incredibly well done
Crazy what years of surfboard innovation can do to your surfing. Welcome to the present
One of my new fav stab vids yew
9:35 that's the biggest problem with FCS2, but mostly because of how much strain popping them in puts on the glass just behind the fins. I've had 5 boards with FCS2 and 4 have got cracks at the back of the fin boxes within a month of use. One of them cracked right through to the foam and started taking on water, but to be fair that one was well-used when I bought it. The annoying thing is, as much as I like the idea of screw-less fins, pretty much everyone I know uses at least one screw with FCS2 anyway (lost a couple fins in the water before I started using screws myself), so the locking mechanism is totally unecessary.
17:03 was NUTS
the waves always so fun there?!!!
wow, what a surfer. loved it
