- Thank you Rod Bower for another great day in Visalia!
First low pass, dive test to 250 MPH, fast decel stalls!!
SO AWESOME!!!
Report below.
airplanes are cool
Flt 004 Report
Engine Start: 13:20
Engine Shutdown: 14:57
Fuel Used: ~26 Gallons
Landings: 1
Flt time: 1.6 Hrs
Aircraft Total Time: 4.0 HRS (after this flight)
Power Settings:
Takeoff 42" 4200 RPM
Climb 30" 3500 RPM
Cruise 25" 3000 RPM
Test Points:
Rate Of Climb Hack at TO Pwr and 120 MIAS
Engine Break-in, Cruise Power, 1.3 HRS
Close Coolant Door
250 MIAS Dive, Stick wraps on 5 MPH ctr
VS Check (faster decel)
VSO Check (faster decel)
MX Before Flight:
Fuel totaled.
Airplane took 9.6 gallons, totalizer showed 7 gal burned, k-factor suspect
2nd Electronic Ignition Added. Two boxes, same plugs, distributor, crank sensor
Procedure change, run mag and EI all the time
Aileron friction, added 0.005 shim to aft delron bushing
Aileron friction, cleaned and lubed rodends and belcranks
Fire Suppression System is now active
Cooling door is functional
Leaned the main fuel jet one size
Aircraft Batteries Replaced
Ground engine run, mixture check, 45" and 4200 RPM
Brake resevoir was low and leaking, both addressed.
Minor fuel leak at the fuel pump, fittings were cleaned and retightened
Right strut leak addressed
Inner gear doors still removed
Electrical system changed, both busses now on the main bus, this mean more starter power, but no longer is there power redundancy for the EI.
Data:
Rate of Climb Hack at TO Pwr and 120 MIAS: 3500 to 4000 FPM
Engine Break-in, Cruise Power, 1.3 HRS: 168 MIAS and 20 GPH at 25" and 3000RPM, 7500' MSL, 188 MTAS
Close coolant door: ~10 deg increase in coolant temperature. No trim change, no speed change.
250 MIAS Dive, Stick wraps on 5 MPH ctr: Nominal. Stiff and well damped. Control forces, response, and stability all reasonable at this higher speed. At 250 MIAS on the EFIS, mechanical gauge showed 280 MIAS. Prop governor couldn't hold 3000 RPM, and creeped up to 3500 at 250 MIAS (280 MTAS). Debris blowing around in cockpit
VS Check (faster decel): 68 MIAS. This is 10 MPH slower than Flt 003. Lower speed with a faster decel is expected. Decel rate was 2 MPS (compare at 0.75 MPS on Flt 003 for VS 80).
VSO Check (faster decel): 64 MIAS. This is 10 MPH slower than Flt 004. Lower speed with a faster decel is expected. Decel rate was 1.5 MPS (compare at 0.75 MPS on Flt 003 for VSO of 72).
Low Approach: Nominal. Rod was very pleased with this point.
3,000' MSL High Key SFO: Not high enough for a flame out approach.
Sqwawks:
Mag check poor before takeoff, great after landing
Idle Mixture set at 1-2", good
Throttle friction, throttle rolled off on takeoff.
Needed more right trim for takeoff setting
Aileron stiction as bad as before, worse at altitude, 5-7 LBS breakout. After the flight aileron rubbing found in wing, all flutter points need to be repeated.
10% airspeed error between gauges at 250 MIAS.
