On this occasion PS2 in 480p and Gamecube in 480i therefore PS2 looking much sharper. I'd like to see like for like with the same resolutions available. Almost all PS2 games in 480p via GSM, almost all GC in 480p via Wii and almost all Xbox games as standard in 480p are possible. Great work as always :)

The PS2 version has the Progressive Scan mode enabled, that's why it looks sharper whereas the Gamecube looks softer. Obviously the Gamecube has anti-aliasing and shorter load times, but other than there doesn't seem to be much difference.

Much like the Xbox and Dreamcast, the Gamecube actually uses a deflicker filter for 480i content (even in 480p mode).

PS2 has noticeable jaggies, but the textures are sharp.
The GC version has blurry textures throughout.
However, I think both are great ports.
The AC version runs on System 246, a system based on the PS2 board, so perhaps it is the PS2 version that is more like the AC version.

If you're not a PC gamer, you probably won't know what areas you should be looking for.
The GameCube is struggling with tessellation and anisotropic filtering.
Pause at 3:39 and look at the pathway leading up to the temple doors - the GameCube version is lacking detail on the tiles the further you go into the background, whereas the PS2 version maintains its distance detail.
Also look at the grass textures in the background, the GameCube is less detailed here also, the image is more blurry and lacking texture resolution.
Overall though, there's not much in it, Soul Calibur 2 was great no matter what platform you were playing it on.

Progressive Scan on the GameCube required a connection through the Digital A/V port, which was removed from later models of the system. The official component cables actually did a digital-to-analog conversion on the signal, but nowadays there are HDMI adapters you can buy.
But for absolute best graphics quality, the "right" choice is Dolphin at a drastically increased rendering resolution.

Such a shame Link did not return in Soul Calibur 2 HD Online. I get the reason why because it was on the Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 and not the Nintendo Wii. Donkey Kong is owned by Nintendo, so that's why you don't see the DKC SNES Trilogy on Rare Replay. Microsoft bought the rights to Banjo and Conker, so that's why you see those games in RR.
A Switch version of SCII with Link would be awesome! The closest that we've ever got to having all three guest characters in the same game is SCII Plus, which is a GameCube hack that imports Heihachi's and Spawn's movesets and voicelines while using Mitsurugi's and Necrid's models, respectively. That mode also has a playable Inferno.
Officially, HDO is the closest to the three guest characters being in the same game as it has all but Link in it. A Switch port would fix all of that IMO, but Bamco is probably too scared to put the game out across all platforms as it would make the game unequal across different platforms (i.e., Kratos only being on the PS3 version of MK9, Cole McGrath and co. appearing only in the PS3/Vita versions of SFxT, etc.). I think porting SCII on modern consoles again would generate a bunch of money for them (though SCII:HDO is also available on Xbox Series/One due to backwards compatibility).

@@theonewhowrotethis5681 yes I'm completely aware that Donkey Kong is owned by Nintendo and 007 is owned by MGM. I just wished that they were included into Rare Replay.
But in all seriousness, I would love Soul Calibur 2 HD Online for the Nintendo Switch with several improvements such as balancing issues (Raphael is extremely broken in SC2), have Lizardman unlocked from the start (please Bamco don't force me to play the entire Weapon Master Mode including the Extra Missions to unlock this dumb dinosaur), and have Inferno be the final unlockable playable character instead (a much more appropriate reward for completing a long grinding mode).

I got all three versions of this game (Gladly the Xbox version is backwards compatible with Xbox 360 which i cant say the same for many of Microsoft's exclusive games sadly). Since there are only two in display most notably the PS2 and GameCube versions. Ill have to compare just those two since Xbox is irrelevant to the topic right now.
Clearly it looks like PS2 and GameCube have different resolution sizes (Im not sure which is the smaller one), the opening cinematic has one different character from the other. Heihachi Mishima from the Tekken series shows up in the PS2 opening while Link from the Legend of Zelda series shows up in the GameCube opening. GameCube seems to have faster loading times. On the Character roster screen, Heihachi and Link are positioned in the same exact spot, each with their own weapon of choice (If you wanna consider Heihachi's armor and fist a weapon that is). That was probably self explanatory but i guess it should be stated anyway. They both have many different weapons to choose from in the unlockable Special modes as well if you buy them from the Weapon Master mode. Obviously as well Heihachi and Link both have different stories and different rival matches (sub bosses) too, along with different endings. They both also have different embu demonstrations (I guess to simplify what i mean they show off their moves on screen when the game is left on with no one playing). In the gallery Heihachi and Link each have their own art made for them to view. Another major difference between the PS2 and GameCube version of the game is that that GameCube version has Zelda easter eggs. Many musical easter eggs. When playing as Link, every time you win a match, you hear the "Item Found" jingle from the Zelda games. You can also have the theme of the first Zelda game (the Overworld version) play when you are playing as Link in Sophitia and Cassandra's stage or during Link's sub boss fight with Raphael. With Heihachi in the PS2 version of SoulCalibur 2, i guess it just slightly feels like youre playing Tekken in a sense. Other than that, no easter eggs in the PS2 game to my knowledge.... Thats it. There are no major differences between the GameCube and PS2 versions of SoulCalibur 2. The gameplay feels and looks the same. All the other characters fight the same way the always done in the game. It is pretty much the same game with each having their own guest representative, so it just all comes down to your personal preferences or availability based on what console you have.
This game is a fan favorite among the Soul Series. No entry that appeared after has topped this entry as of yet from what i seen. I personally love this game as this was the game that got me into the series. However my favorite entry was SoulCalibur 3 (Yes, 3 lol). Talim is my favorite character in this game an the series as a whole. Plus i turns out Talim was the number most popular character of the series too which makes me like her more. We also share a couple of commonalities like being born on the 15th of June and having unknown blood types as i have yet to find out what mine is too. Also Fun Fact about the PS2 and Xbox version of the game (I know i said the Xbox version was irrelevant but i feel this should be said in this regard since im no longer comparing at this moment). Originally, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII (7) was meant to be in the PS2 game, but issues occurred resulting in Heihachi being in the game. Kasumi from the Dead or Alive series was also meant to be in the Xbox version of SoulCalibur 2 and i wish she did make it in. Sadly issues also occurred resulting in Spawn getting in instead.

It's the Flicker Filter that makes the GameCube more blurrier, a real problem on GameCube games even with support for progressive scan, not all games disable Flicker Filter when enabling 480p, Wii have this same problem, and it's a very awful situation. Using Nintendont we can force Flicker Filter off, I don't know If it's possible to do the same with Swiss, but when comparing we must adhere to what the game offers and not use mods. And another thing, Soul Calibur 2 is just 920MB in size on both Xbox and GameCube because textures are compressed, for know I don't know it's size on PS2 but I will look and update this when I find It. Another reason for blurry textures is Trilinear Filter, Xbox uses It too and It is really annoying when playing SC2 in 720p, but on the PS2 It uses Linear Filter without mipmaps, this makes textures fully sharp on any distance at the cost of pixel craw, most PS2 games don't use Bilinear or Trilinear Filter to save resources, like we seen on 7th and 8th gen where Anisotropic Filter where 4x at max.
Edit: Now I have all the information needed, SC2 consists of 3 files + the executable for both 3 versions: "BGM.afs", "Movie.afs" and "Root.olk". Root is the game, bgm is music and movie is the CGI Intro, PS2 and Xbox have the same size for both Root.olk (672MB) and BGM.asf (228MB), but Movie.asf is bigger on Xbox (418MB) vs PS2 (164MB). Total size for Xbox is 1,27GB and 1,04GB for PS2. GameCube have smaller size for 2 files than Xbox and PS2, Root.olk (560,21MB) and BGM.asf (156,19MB), but Movie is bigger than PS2 (269,29MB), total size for GameCube is 768MB. I don't know why Namco made the music and main game files smaller than the PS2 but the movie file bigger, instead of keeping them the same size as the total Mini-DVD capacity is 1,35GB, it's enough for even the Xbox version, very strange. One funny catch about the PS2, it have 3 dummy files of 1GB each, anti piracy method for sure, but in my opinion it's a waste of space, only the main game file would fit in a CDRom, people would have to play the game without music (and probably would do, I remember Dreamcast backups without music and FMVs, people simple don't care) 🤮

Any way one od my favorite beatem'up games of all times... Probably X-Box will be beat cuz its more powerfull than PS and Cube but i don't Care i luv this game...
But ... My very favorite and one of first 3D beatem'up was Soul Blade ( Edge ) that was first to the series and my favorite and i've got IT from '95 on my collection ♥️
I remember back then , ive got Sega megadrive ( Genesis ) and my friend in '96 got PlayStation ...
    Shock that i have took....
I don't know what i must see today to have this feeling from the past ... Maybe see an ufo ...
It was new quality .... Full 3D , animatuon fluidness its hard to explain ...
    From 2D graphic to full 3D ...
Nothing give me more emotions than this ( im video games industry ).

I always thought GC version was superior to PS2 but I see now that every texture is lower res, just the loading is much faster as always
    .
There was a right way to use the GC's texture cache that few devs used, but when used right you get RE4 with better textures on GC and much worse on PS2.

    • @Reltdeats
      @Reltdeats 2 года назад +3

I think the low res impression u see here is cause the 480p vs 480i. There is no point in having lower res textures in a gamecube that has double the vram (4mb vs 8mb).
480p can be forced in Gamecube, and overall, performance is better. So yes, GC is superior.

The video forgot to activate Progressive Scan for GameCube as you don't see the option turned on at the start. As such, it's an unfair comparison for the GameCube as the PS2's being run at 480p while the GameCube's being run at 480i (though GameCube component cables are super expensive).
A more fair comparison would've been to either have both in 480i or both in 480p. That way, there's no disparity in resolutions.

That moment you realize that Soul Calibur 2 Definitive Edition MUST be a Nintendo exclusive because of Link.
It being Definitive, it needs all three guest fighters. Heihachi already belongs to Bandai Namco, and Spawn, they’d just have to renew the license again. But since Link is copyrighted by Nintendo, and Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox would never let their mascots be on other consoles, a theoretical SC2 DE will 100% be Nintendo exclusive.

The ps2 version looks sharper but i dont thinm that has anything to do with filtering, i think the gamecubes anti aliasing is bluring everything a bit because thats how some anti aliasing works.
Personally i dont think the gamecubes textures dont look that bad and i think jaggies look worse, so i would pick gamecube here.
As far as loading times, gamecube js clearly faster. What do you do after every single fight in a fighting game? You load, and this is much shorter and much less frusterating on gamecube, loading once might not be that big of a deal on ps2, but times that by how many matches in your play session.
Framerate tests would be nice to have, but i have heard in the past that ps2 verion has slightly worse framerate than the other versions.
Ill give ps2 points for having a better controller for this game. For some people this is huge.

Cloud was going to be on the PS2 version, but Square Enix pulled out. As such, Heihachi was a quick replacement that helped save some dev work for that version.
I've heard rumors that Kasumi from Koei Tecmo's DOA series was supposed to be the Xbox representative before Spawn, but I don't see sources backing that claim up anywhere. As such, it's likely an unfounded rumor that would've made sense. Dante from DMC was also supposed to be a guest character in SCIII, but that fell through as well (and that claim has more sources backing it up than the Kasumi in SCII rumor).
I believe SCIII was PS2 exclusive due to Sony paying for exclusivity rights. Had Sony not done that, I totally could've seen that game arriving on GameCube and Xbox to boost its sales (and the series doing better overall due to 2/3rds of the fanbase not being hemorrhaged thanks to SCIII). Overall sales for the series grew gradually from Soul Edge to Soulcalibur, then spiked high when Soulcalibur II was released. From there, it dipped hard when III was released, then rose again when IV was released, dipped hard again when V was released, and slightly recovered when VI was released. Had III never dipped, the series could've ended up in a much better position than it currently is in.

Nintendo's port is the only one with a SWORDSMAN, you know. Because the SWORD that is the main plot point of the game about SWORDS?

estaria bueno q algun iluminado se anime a trasladar el juego a la Dreamcast. No es nada demandante para el hardware, solo usa mas poligonos que el juego original. Por lo demas, este y el 3 podrían correr sin problemas en DC

Huh?! Am I on crack, or does the PS2 consistently looks cleaner? Look at those background assets, especially the ground textures. I used to think the Gamecube was the better option, but now I know what MLiG meant when they mentioned the more unfiltered look of the PS2 version...

PS2 version is progressive scan mode is on, GameCube version progressive scan was not turned on. So it's kinda of a unfair comparison.

I guess the most fair comparison would be GCHDMI VS PS3 (smoothing off), both in 480p...

@@JimProfit357 They could also do both with Progressive Scan mode turned off if they didn't want to spend hundreds on a component cable. I also agree that it was an unfair comparison.

I went into Subway today to get a healthy sandwich. The older lady behind the counter helped me and started preparing my sandwich for me. She out of nowhere fell to the ground and started convulsing and shaking. the other teenage girl there just stepped over her and finished up my sandwich as the lady lay on the ground shaking. The two teenage girls that work there just laughed it off and said "Oh, she does this all the time." I peeked over the counter to see the lady foaming at her mouth. I then paid for my sandwich and left the establisment.

That's fucked up. The old lady may have been a diabetic with low blood sugar but that doesn't explain the foaming at the mouth. Either way you and the teenage employees are scumbags for not helping her. And what has this got to do with soul caliber 2?
