Fun fact: the song was written practically blind, the author didn't know the direction show will take, only some basic themes from a couple of first episodes. That's why it's so optimistic and joyful. I found its juxtaposition to the show itself quite amuzing :D
To be a bit more exact, she didn’t read the plot of the story that much, she just went off her head.

@@ptakleo Yeah, but despite Komm Süsser Tod having a very upbeat rhythm it also has some quite depressing and sad lyrics to be honest, very fitting to the show's ending. I think maybe it just shows more of the contrast you talked about.

What is cell animation?
@@basedarsonist it is actually "Cel animation" (sorry for the error) it was the old animation technique in which each frame was drawn by hand on a sheet with different sheets for background, foreground, characters, etc. It had a very different feel from the animation nowadays (which is not bad) it's just that whenever I look at older anime(made with cel animation) they feel almost sublime partly because it feels Nostalgic.
@@mementomori1994 oh I see now. Thanks for the explanation. You know what? I notice this very distinctive aesthetics in 90s anime as well, just never been able to pin down what it is. It appears that what I have been noticing is the Cel animation style that gives it a painting-like animation that 90s anime have.
Evangelion and The End Of Evangelion, has to be one of the most mature yet depressing anime’s I’ve ever seen. Gone are the cliches that I see in most modern anime, hell especially for a show that released in 1990s. Hideaki Anno gave us us one of the most mature yet haunting themes of what would it be like to be the pilot inside a giant robot (that secretly your mother is trapped in) and a character like Shinji that everyone can relate to what’s it like to lack a spine to be stuck with a hedgehogs dilemma and being afraid of human contact. and the religious symbolism and metaphors and with a great use of classical music when there’s an a 2 or probably felt like 4 minute of an unskippable take of Unit-01 holding Kaworu as we the audience hearing to Beethoven 9 symphony, and “Air” by Johann Sebastian plays when Asuka fights the Eva Series giving us hands down one of the best fights in anime history.
This is a word I’ve never used but once Third Impact commenced my first initial thoughts said “if Stanley Kubrick directed a gundam anime.” Because that scene was so odd and abstract that nobody knows what it means or symbolized.
And how this show left me and others with an impact of what we just saw all were thinking is...
The Beauty Of, You Pretty Much Obligated To Make The Beauty Of The Rebuilds Of Eva At This Point.
I mean, the religious symbolism doesn't really mean anything but I agree with everything else. There's nothing else quite like Eva, it aged incredibly well, and it's certainly one of the greatest animes of all time.
Show for me is a 7/10 and the movie is like a 9/10
@@sprawlz6466 The religious symbols does mean something. Evangelion is about escapism and how fiction can deformed our way of seeing reality. Escapism is basically avoiding the reality of the world by consuming a fiction or hobbies. And if we agree on the fact that religion is a fiction (and I don't want to offend anyone it's juste my opinion everybody think what they want of religion). So if we agree that religions are fictions, then we can link it to the theme of how fiction can give a deformed view of the reality. Since religion are the biggest fiction in the world, it's also the biggest way for escapism. At least that's how a saw it. And sorry if my English is hard to understand it's not my first language.
@@AmiboW I agree with you,even if the show have a lot of incredible moments, it sometimes repeated itself a least with Shinji's narrative arc, and so the characters seems to not go forward (except if it was intended to show how Shinji is lost and don't know what to do). And Asuka's narrative arc is kinda predictable. But the movie is just a masterpiece!
Tupacalypse while that is a theme of the show, I don’t think that was the intention with the religious symbolism. The story of the creation of Eva, Lilith, and Adam mirrors the story from the Old Testament. It’s very similar so they decided to make a bunch of Christian Easter eggs throughout the series. It’s nothing more than an aesthetic choice really and one of the creators admitted that. Since Christianity is somewhat unpopular in Japan, it added a sense of mystery to the atmosphere of the show for Japanese viewers. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s no different from adding a soundtrack or changing the color palette, it’s just cool. And besides, I don’t think Hideaki Anno, the man who encourages you to see life however you want, would come right out and say “your religion is wrong”.
This channel is definition of quality over quantity.

It would be my favorite animated movie of all time if I counted it as a stand alone movie. But I don't consider it one because it's not its own story, it's the conclusion portion of an entire show. If the movie had it's own beginning, middle, and end (like the Cowboy Bebop Movie), then I'd be able to say that. So for now, my favorite animated movie has to be Fantastic Mr. Fox.
The whole ending sequence with kom susser tod playing in background is a completely out of the world experience.

@@samidejong106 they're both canon. Hideaki Anno (show's creator) screwed up the timing as he was writing the series and only gave himself 2 episodes for the end of eva (his planned ending). He didn't want to rush the grand finale, so instead he skipped straight to the part of the human instrumentality and finished the characters arcs so it could technically pass as it's own 26 episode story. The last 2 episodes take place entirely in the character's minds and everything else in the real world was completely ignored. I guess the theory was that if people cared enough about the show, then there would be demand for more content. The show became super popular so Anno got the green light to make the end of eva movie as well. The EoE shows everything that happens in the physical world before, during, and after instrumentality. The two "endings" actually thematically complement each other very well, I'm not sure if that was intentional or not but it works wonderfully.

What I love about EVA is that every single goddamn moment is so memorable, sure there are a few exceptions, but EVA is almost always fascinating to see, it treats cinematography like it's an art form.

everybody talks about meaning of Evangelion, but this anime has one of the best cinematography and art direction i've ever seen in an animated tv show.
I have always been skeptical about starting the show cause I have mixed feelings about anime, I started it but kind of lost interest a couple episodes in, but this wonderful video reminded me how hauntingly beautiful the visuals and imagery in this show is. I'll continue watching.

I honestly hate most anime, but a select few are absolutely incredible, you just gotta know where to look. Mushishi, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Death Note, are a few that I think are great for starters. Evangelion is a fantastic show but it might be a little weird if you haven't really seen many animes.

MAN I fucking smiled when the video started, the camera was panning up Shinji, the theme was playing, and then the beat dropped, revealing the name of the show. And I loved how the video's end paralleled the beginning. I was thinking the vid would end with the iconic self-actualized Shinji smile, but that self-assured exhale Shinji does in the end with only the faintest glimmer of a smile really set this video apart.

don’t watch on netflix, it doesn’t have the directors cut episodes (longer 21-24 eps that prepare u for eoe) and it also doesn’t have fly me too the moon and it’s variations

The ending of the show left me with a huge question mark on my head but after the end of evangelion, I understood everything. It left me with a different feeling that I usually get from finishing something. The story was really good. I love it's theme. It's one of the most unique show I saw.
No go watch Rebuild!!!!! Movie 1 is basically a recap of first 15 episodes. Movie 2 is the rest of the episodes reimagined by the creator plus a little into uncharted territory. Movie 3 is off into the unknown it goes further. Movie 4 ugh unfortunately still waiting but will be the creators definitive stamp of approval finish of the series. This is MY anime. I could spend weeks praising this show. Yes there are flaws but every anime does. Even AoT which is getting a little out of hand with how cocky the fan base is getting.

I love how disturbing this show can be, It still makes me too uncomfortable from wjat I've seen which is why I still haven't seen it yet but I do actually love disturbing media and Evangelion has the most beautiful imagery I have ever seen in my life, I want to watch it so much. As an artist I feel like I've stumbled upon a gold mine and I want to incorporate it's imagery, energy, emotion, camera angles and all into my art, So very cool.

Deciding to watch Evangelion is the best decision i have ever make, i love everything about this series, its a shame that i just only discover this masterpiece since i come into this fandom too late
There’s just something so haunting about Evangelion itself. There’s a duality within its own message because it’s both depressing and hopeful. It talks about how even though life beats you down and you feel hopeless, you realize that life is based on your choices and it’s okay for you to be here. It’s okay to like yourself. At least that’s how I see it.
its mostly based on your view to this world,shinji sees his life so negatively ,and in the end of the show he learned that he can see the world differently from a beautiful view and he could be happy if he does that

I recently watched Eva and finished it with the End of Evangelion and i'm still mesmerized by it.. i kinda regret not watching it sooner, it is now the best anime to ever made in my eyes, every single shot from each episodes and the movie is just beautiful.. not a single of it felt like a waste of time, every scenery, landscape, had it's own meaning and connection with the scene that was shown, it tells us something. sorry if i sounds like i'm blabbering but it's just that freaking loved this anime.

I really appreciate you guys getting around to Neon Genesis Evangelion! However, I feel in the description, it would be very appropriate to credit the storyboard artists as well. This is because the "Director of Photography" in anime production is heavier on the post-production side of things such as color, compositing, and fx. When it comes to other aspects of cinematography, such as shot composition and movement, shot timing and editing, and the general mise-en-scene, a lot of that is decided in the storyboarding phase.
For Evangelion, I highly recommend paying tribute to the contributions of Kazuya Tsurumaki, Masayuki, Kiichi Hadame, and Shinji Higuchi. Akira Oguro, Hiroyuki Ishido, Keiichi Sugiyama, Tensai Okamura, and Tsuyoshi Kaga also have contributed well towards the episodes they each storyboarded.
This comment should get more likes! Cinema is a collaborative medium and I feel that in the minds of many all the editors, storyboard artists and a ton of other people are overshadowed by the director.

I had forgotten how stunning Evangelion's imagery was, and how much this song slaps.
Probably the thing that made this anime immortal and got a place in memory of milions of people is that it's one of the few series that is the most relatable, even if it's about giant mechs stopping the world from doom. It's more about the people in that world, their fears, their dreams and hopes. Things we mess with on everyday. And that's why we can look on Shinji like on a mirror where we see our problems, but the solutions we must find alone. At least i think so

What I love about Evangelion's cinematography (and Anno's general sense of direction) is that there's a lot of head on shots but they still manage to make them look striking and stark
I love it honestly, it all feels somewhat brutalist and functional. Even Ghost in the shell kinda looks like this
