I get what you mean, at some point Western workers in Kenya may be getting paid much higher for the same job and skills and knowledge as Kenyan workers. I think the abstract qualities are valued higher in Western workers vs Kenyans within Kenya because there is an intuitive belief that there is something inherently rare coming from a Western worker in a Kenyan space compared to a Kenyan in a Kenyan space? This idea is kind of what Chris was talking about in terms of being replaceable, Kenyans are more replaceable in Kenya. However perhaps that belief needs questioning every so often so things can be calibrated to real value not just abstract hiring intuition, especially as more Kenyans are upskilling.
This was quite an eye opener and a thought provoking debate and I'm proud to say i watched to the end; a round of applause to the panel. In the event you have search a similar debate also consider having fact checker(s) or something along those lines; this is in lieu of Orwa's philosophical/historical references that at times came off as borderline incongruous.
Chris, take it easy, man! It's cool to hear different perspectives. Let's give others some space to share their thoughts too. It enriches the conversation for all of us as listeners. 👍

You shouldn’t go to earn money. You shouldn’t go to transfer skills. You should go only to learn about the people of that place. What they like. What they think. What they buy and why. It’s a university degree. Come home, apply what you learnt and teach others. Teach what of our products could be turned into valuable objects of their desires.
Yes! 100% - I would also add when you are learning, take only the good stuff ( curiosity, adventure etc.) and leave all the bad stuff ( individualism, consumerism etc.)
hapo kwa tipping i agree with chris. tipping is bad manners that we have learnt from movies. we need to emancipate ourselves from mental brainwash. tipping is no different from corruption. the govt needs to send dci, gsu, n what not to end this vice 😁

I think the japanese analogy was the wrong context. Their culture is not about respect to you but honor to themselves hence the perfectionism. They don't care about you. It has nothing to do with us but all about themselves and the standards they hold themselves up to
The end result is a harmonious or respectful living with the host. Whether they do it for themselves or others, the honor leads to a conciliatory living.

Sometime it does happen, we know he is intelligent. The reason I love debates is they challenge a point of view and mindsight.
