for better video quality than the method in the video, before exporting, rotate ALL your clips sideways (make sure they're all facing the same direction). Then, export the video, go into your photos app, go to edit the video and just rotate it so it's right-side up again. This gives you better video quality because the exported video takes up the entire frame rather than a small fraction of it. If you crop a horizontal video into a portrait video and then blow it up to full-screen on your phone, the video quality suffers.
This just made my day, this works! Thank you.
perfect solution dear...
Genius
Thank you!
That's it, thank you :)
That is super easy, people have done it in over 100 years, you just got to hold the video camera the right way, the only way. Horizontal.
That really helps me for this, in fact I don’t like these black bars. But you are a true hero man! Keep up the good work!
Great to hear. Yeah I realised they were going to be an issue for anyone working with portrait mode video so glad it was helpful!
Who sent you??? Such a video saver. Thank you man! Every other video I watch is just bla yours really works!!!
So great to hear that! It is such a confusing topic. So glad that my video made sense! Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
omg I've been looking for this solution for over 15 minutes. thank you!
Great. Glad it helped!
Absolute legend thanks so much! Been trying to figure this out for a while for mobile gaming videos on YT for games that are in the vertical portrait format
Awesome. Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Thank you so much. I’ve few videos already on RUclips with black bars. 😔
You’re welcome
Thank you so much for a really good tutorial😃!
Thanks. Greatly appreciated!
Wow 😳 you are the goat for this !!!!
Glad you found it helpful! Cheers!
You’re my go to when it comes to creating videos on IMovie!!!
Great, have quite a few videos on the topic. More to come. Cheers!
Its better to rotate the video in iMovie itself while editing and rotate the edited vedio in your photos app.
Yes that certainly is an option. The only downside of this method is when using typography and transitions as they will end up 90 Rotated. So for a basic edit with no type and transitions it would work but for a highly edited video it won't work that well so it is better to do it in the horizontal and crop out the black bars later.
Thank you - very useful. And what a lovely Softcoated Wheaten Terrier.
You are most welcome!
very very helpful. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I’m not getting pinch to zoom option
What about on the desktop? How do edit the black bars out?
You can do the same kind of thing that I have demonstrated here on your desktop computer using the Apple Photos app. Just open Photos and drag the video in. Click on the crop tool and crop those black bars out.....
…legendary video
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Wonderful! Thanks for this really helpful tutorial.
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome!
Amazing instructions thanks for sharing 😊
Anytime! You are most welcome 😊
Mine does not show the magnifying glass. The cropping didn’t happen before, why did apple screw up something that already work fine?
If you tap on the thumbnail of the video clip on the timeline the magnify glass icon should appear in the video preview window. If it is a still image tap on the ken burns icon to turn the effect off and simply pinch on the photo to zoom in and out.
@@Touchtechnologyreview thank you, but it still doesn’t appear
This is amazing. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
You just saved me!! Thank you
Great to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
How do I do this for still pictures? It won’t let me pinch enough and there’s no magnifying glass? Making it hard to do art vids lol.
Very helpful! Thank you :)
Glad it was helpful!
I tried this with the first of several portrait video clips in a movie BUT it then reformatted the entire video,...truncating 16:9 clips too... not just the first clip with bars? I have an 11pro on ios 14. What happened?? 😫
If you have mixed formats including vertical 9x16 and horizontal 16x9, then really you have to make a choice. Leave the black bars on the vertical clips so you get to see all of the content or tap on them and zoom in so they fill out to the 16x9 horizontal crop.
thanksss for sharingg !!
You are very welcome!
Thankssss!!
No problem!!
This solution clears the black bars but the problem is once I movie processes my videos it has already collapsed it so i am left with a cropped version AND black bars. I tried that Filmora app and that shrank the original video to accommodate everything. Which is no good either. Are there any other apps which will keep the vertical format but allow adding of txt etc? I use it for You tube. Help!
You might want to check out this video I produced on Premiere Pro Rush which you might find does the trick for you. Had Portrait mode video from the get go and has pretty decent text capabilities too: ruclips.net/video/7dhG8AOpV40/видео.html

Can you crop the black sides on a Mac? Im struggling to export the completed iMovie clip from my Mac to my phone in order to do this.
The mac version of iMovie is also limited to 16x9 widescreen at the moment. There is no easy way to crop video on an iMac without using more expensive video software so to keep it simple for now I would suggest to finish the edit in iMovie then export to the phone and use the editor in iOS as I show in this video to trim the video to vertical portrait mode.
@@Touchtechnologyreview Thank you for that. Any tips on easy exporting from mac to iphone? File is too large to email, airdrop or download from dropbox. :(
@@christineb8557 Usually you can airdrop it even if the file is large. Perhaps there is not enough storage on the phone? If there is and it is still not working you can try using either dropbox or Google Drive. These are free cloud storage solutions that usually give you up to 3-5Gb storage. So you can navigate to dropbox.com and sign up or go to drive.google.com. Upload your video file there and then download that apps on your iPhone and download them that way.
@@christineb8557 Hi Christine, quick follow up on this question. I just noticed the new version of Photos on OSX which is the free photo editor you get with your computer allows you to crop your videos. So if you check you are on the latest version of Photos you should be able to open your video in the app and click on the crop tool to edit to portrait format like I show on the iOS demo of this video. I'll do a video tutorial on that soon.
How can i do if its images
You can use the edit option in your camera roll to crop photos.
I don’t have the magnifying glass
Make sure you tap on the video clip thumbnail first. Then it should appear in the viewfinder window.
I made a movie with iMovie and some of the video clips are shot in portrait mode and some in landscape. If I crop the portrait videos, it will also crop the landscape ones. What do I do???
You have to pick your format first. I would think that for mixed media like that you are probably best going with a horizontal video 16x9 format first. Then when you insert a portrait video pinch it so it fits in the screen with black bars side by side. Or if you want you can crop it to fill out the widescreen. If most of your footage is vertical then you can use the edit hack that I show at the end to get rid of those black bars.
the icon doesn't show up for me :(
Make sure you tap on the thumbnail video in the timeline first then it should appear.
Why do they do this ? Such a great app and they can’t insert 16:9 which is used by so many ? Such a shame.
It’s kinda dumb that iMovie doesn’t have different frames 🤦♂️
true, it’s super annoying
You all probably dont care at all but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost the account password. I love any tips you can give me
@Emory Zayn Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

@@Touchtechnologyreview why iPhone 12 doesn't show this magnifying glass option
yeah but this only works for when all your clips have that same size. What if some clips fill the screen and others dont? How do you fix those that dont?
Thank-you so much!! This was bugging me for so long!
You're welcome!! Glad you found it helpful. Yeah I know it is a big problem for iMovie with so many people shooting portrait mode now. They do have to update the software to include a portrait option at some point but for now at least this provides a solution.
But I’m not seeing the black bars on my vertical photos I added and I would like to see them. And I cannot pinch to zoom out b/c it just goes back to the zoomed in aspect. Any solution for this?
This worked EXACTLY as you described, including the quick vertical 9:16 crop method. You are a gentleman, scholar and more likely a wizard. Thank you for this, subscribed 👍
Excellent! Glad to hear it worked for you. Thanks so much for your kind feedback and the sub!
THIS WAS LITERALLY LIFE SAVING. Thank you so much every other video is so complicated

Great to hear the video was helpful! Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I can’t find the magnifine glass on some of my pictures on most
This is what I do, but is there any way of retaining the portrait footage without downgrading the quality, seeing as it’s now been zoomed in after cropping?
even I wanna know
Thank you🙏🏽
Any time!
WAIT. YOU SAVED ME FROM PURCHASING A STUPID APP AFTER SEARCHING FOR A SOLUTION FOR OVER AN HOURRRRRR. thank you!!!
You are very welcome. Glad it helped out!
i have a question. i have made a video but accidentally filmed in portrait mode and already edited it. thats all good but when i crop the video, my intro gets cut because thats vertical. is there any way that you know of that can fix this?
I see what you mean. I think the only way is to cut a version of the movie with just the intro and export that out as a movie clip. Then go ahead and edit the portrait mode video and cut out the black bars as I show in the video. Then add the intro in as a new clip.....
This is helpful but the issue that I have is not so much the black bars but more so the fact that it actually cuts out so much of original screen footage that in my case where I’m teaching about a text and a whole chunk is now gone, it negates the purpose of the video. They should make the bar aesthetic optional not force you to have it. I think it’s a deal breaker for me and I’ll have to use another app.
Your videos are so helpful!! You have really helped me in my RUclips journey!!
Thanks so much. Really pleased to hear that they have been helpful!
Hi thank you for sharing this video. Is there anyway after cropping the video that it can keep it’s same resolution?
When you tap to zoom in it will sometimes look pixelated as the resolution is fixed to the original video clip. So the only way to get a better result is to shoot in 4K for example. Then if you export the movie out to 1080p the zoomed in video should look pretty close to the resolution of a 1080p movie.....
Thank you so much! Best friggin tip I've got in ages and so easily explained. Saved my night! I'm subscribing.
Awesome, thank you!
I edit my portrait vids in iMovie on my Mac as it’s easier. However once I’ve sent them to my phone, and re scale the video so it fills The whole screen on my phone to get rid of the black bars, It loses its video quality and is not as clear. How do I do this so it stays 1080p after edited?
Yessss!!! Thank you!! FINALLY!!!
(Not sure why 🍎 just can’t include a way to fix that problem w/in the app! But meanwhile, thank YOU for helping!!!)
You're welcome!! Hopefully they will add the feature in the app soon! I think they will, it is long overdue.
Nice!
You can also rotate 90 degrees in iMovie by doing a rotation gesture and then rotate back after exporting in the Photos app. This way you can maintain the same resolution and not loose any quality.
Great tip! Yes you can do that. Keep in mind though that the transitions would then go up and down rather than left and right and if you use typography it would appear on left hand side and hard to read. PIP and Split screen would also be rotated in a weird way. So great solution for basic vids but may not work for more complex projects. Cheers!
@@Touchtechnologyreview Wow, didn’t think about any of that. Thanks!
@@Touchtechnologyreview oh right, good point
Thanks a lot 😩 didn’t even know I could do this. I don’t bother using iMovie for vertical videos cause it’s stressful, and I don’t want to download another app cause only iMovie(according to me) doesn’t leave their watermark on the video
Yeah it can be done. Not as easy as it should be but it works and as you say no watermark which is great for a free app.
I filmed a short video but made the mistake of holding my iPhone in Vertical orientation for the first several frames, then while still filming, turned it to Horizontal orientation. Is it possible to make all frames in the video the same orientation? I tried changing the verticals to horizontal but that didn't work -- they are now sideways! I am new to video editing and don't know if this can be done . . . selective, frame by frame, correction of viewing orientation? Would appreciate your help -- thank you!
Currently iMovie is not designed to for vertical and horizontal editing. It is really an horizontal editor. So you have the option to zoom your vertical clips to fill in the horizontal frame. Now if you want to to create a vertical video then you can follow my instructions about editing as normal, leave the black bars on the side and then use the photo editor to crop out the black bars at the end. This is a work around until Apple release an updated version in the future that my support vertical video.
Thank you
You're welcome
Nice 👌
Thanks 😊
imovie is just a stupid app, can’t edit portrait videos!!!
Yeah an update is really overdue. I have heard a new version is coming this month so hopefully they finally add the feature. Long overdue.
How I can do that in my Mac ? It didnot show me the option to zoom .I record with my iPhone 11 Pro Max edit with iMovie but I always get those bars I hope you can help me fix the problem thanks
On the Mac OS version of iMovie you would click on the crop icon to crop into the portrait mode footage. However it would chop off the top and bottom of the video. So if you want to do the same thing that I showed in the second half of this video where you edit the widescreen video after you export from iMovie and chop off the black bars you can open up the video in the Photos app, use the crop tool there to make it a portrait video.
Omg thank you so much. This will be very helpful to my videos! I’m actually like happy crying Inside. Thank you so so so much!
You're so welcome! So glad this was helpful!
dude. you're a life-saver. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
I had a project due in like 30 mins and couldn't figure out how to change it even after watching 3 other vidoes. This SAVED my grade. Thank you so much!!!
Massively frustrating that iPhone doesn't have a built-in feature for this without requiring users to jump through so many hoops.
yeah, I hope they update iMovie soon to included portrait option.
@2:46 Perfect Solution! Thank you!
Anytime!
Thanks for this. The first minute simply solved my portrait video problem.
Great to hear!
Thanks bro finally found someone who explains in perfectly
You're welcome. Glad you found it helpful!
When we change the aspect ration as you mentioned most of the content is cut out of the video and it’s zoomed in. Any way to fix it because otherwise it’s of no use to lose the data to fit in the aspect ratio
It can be hard to make a horizontal crop fit into a vertical if the crop is tight on the original image or video. So when I shoot videos I tend to stand back further to make sure I have lots of room top and bottom of image so that if I have to crop to portrait there is plenty of room.
When I tap on the photo no magnifying glass shows up. This is so annoying and I still can’t find a way to fix it. I have iOS 14
With photos it is a little different. Just tap on the photo thumbnail first, then tap on the Ken Burns Enabled icon that appears on the bottom right of the photo in the preview window. It will now say Ken Burns Disabled. Now you can pinch the photo with your thumb and finger to zoom in and out of it.
As if in this day and age they haven’t put an option for this?
Hii i've been folowing your videos, i just want to ask how can i remove the default transition in imovie in iphone X?
The default transition should be a straight cut. You can change the default to any other transition under the settings section which you can access by tapping on the cog wheel icon.
thank you! it's so frustrating that you have to jump through this many hoops for something so simple.
Yeah I agree. I had to make the video as I knew that so many people want vertical videos now with the rise of IG Reels, TikTok and even RUclips Shorts now.... I think Apple will update the app at some point but until then we only have these workarounds. Glad it helped!
The microphone link is out of stock, new link?
Yeah not sure where you can buy then now, The brand is MovingMic so if you want to try a web search in your region and see what comes up. I have since updated and tend to use the Boya XM6 as it is wireless and as such is more versatile. I did make a review video on it if you want to see it.

this was THE MOST helpful viedo and exactly what i needed thank you!!

Thanks you!!! This was exactly what I needed to solve my problem!!!
Great to hear that. You are most welcome!
Hey but why can’t I see the magnifying tool on each picture i added to be the part of the video in iMovie?
The magnify glass appears on videos. On photos you can tap on them to pinch and zoom in the same way tap on the photo thumb then turn ken burns off and tap to pinch in or zoom out. For some reason iMovie does not let you pinch in and get a vertical photo to show with the crop bars on the side. It seems to want to crop in and make the photo go widescreen. So if that what you are wanting to do you have to prep the photo in the photo editor first....
You are amazing!!! I just started my RUclips channel and I am very grateful for your tips and tricks 🤩 you have no idea how helpful you are ! 💪🏻💪🏻
Awesome, so glad to be of assistance. Have fun creating!
I can now easily edit may youtube shorts! Thanks! 😊

This was straight to the point and so helpful! Thanks!
Great to hear. Thanks for checking out the video!
Kind of baffling how they would design an iOS version of iMovie without this feature
Yes I agree. It was fine years ago, but now that so many people shoot in portrait mode it really is long overdue. I imagine it will be coming in a future version of iMovie possibly mid year?
Just when i need it! Thankyou! btw nice tutorial video
Glad you liked it!

You’re most welcome!
I’m just confused I think because I’m on a MacBook. So I need to get my video in my phone to do this correct. ? I can’t believe these days you can’t just export the size. Are there any apps or software that makes this easier.
Yeah it should be available to do directly in iMovie but Apple have been lagging behind in providing the ability to create vertical format movies. I think it will come out as an update soon. In the meantime if you want to do it on your computer just do the same thing I describe in this video but use the Photos app to edit your video and re crop it. So export it out of iMovie as horizontal with black bars on either side then the final step is to edit that movie using the photos app which lets you crop videos.
@@Touchtechnologyreview ok I will try that and thank you very much. I look forward to more of your content.
YOU are a lifesaver! thank you!
You're welcome!
I wish there was an option for every camera to get rid of black lines
Not really because the actual video doesn't usually have the black bars. Its when you try to put vertical video in a horizontal movie that the software puts the bars in.
Holy shit thank you! I’m just starting my YT channel and those bars were irritating me
Glad to be of assistance. Thanks for checking out the video!

It's great the feature isn't there, now they should block filming in portrait mode as well!
Was perfectly done! Even a non-techy person, like myself, was able to follow along and make the corrections to my movies...the bars were killing me!! Thanks so much!!

Does it work for 16:0 (1080p)? Because it didn’t work for me, it was still exactly the same.
Thankyou !!’Im a influencer and i was freaking out
Great to hear that it helped you. Hopefully one day soon they will build it into iMovie.
Another way of doing it: after inserting the video in iMovie, rotate it 90 degrees, and when you are done editing, save it to the photos app, and there in the photos app rotate it back 90 degrees.
Worked SMOOTHLY (which is not always the case with “help” videos.) EyE See and Appreciate Yah.
