There's actually a package in the AUR that includes pretty much every Canon printer driver and I would highly recommend using that package, so you don't have to compile and update it yourself.

Very helpful vid! Thank you! I have a Canon TS6020 (all-in-one), and am one who handled the printer drivers using the browser-driven CUPS interface, which I found quite a bit of help for online. So to the point here I was able to follow your well-documented steps for the scanner driver part; I didn't have to do the printer driver portion (since again, I'd already done that via another route). So for anyone else in a similar boat after installing the printer drivers, I'd suggest downloading the manufacturer's scanner driver from their site (but not the printer driver file), then skipping to time index 4:22. Once I'd downloaded, unpacked, and installed the driver file, I tested the simplescan app, and it worked! (As a side note, don't forget to delete the original and unzipped installation files in the download directory! They aren't needed after successful installation). For some reason, I ran into a snag when I tried to do your "sudo scangearmp" step. I'm guessing a path problem. So I did a search for files with "scangear", found the binary (executable) file, and added an item to my menu with that path so I can get to it easily henceforth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Open the application without "sudo" (i.e. "scangearmp" or better "setsid scangearmp" so terminal can be closed without closing the application after launching).
Otherwise it wont be possible possible to open the saved files (scans) as a regular user (from the desktop environment) - which usually shows a crossmark ("X") and lock symbol in file's icon.

All the steps were successful, but when I send the command "sudo scangearmp2" the message appears: "Cannot communicate with scanner. Scanner driver will be closed". My printer is a Canon G3100.

It becomes a DNS printer in LinuxMint. I had two of my type of Canon printers to Choose from, I chose the one that was named DNS something or other by the Printers program and I was able to print and view properties and the print queue. I hope to be scanning too but not quite yet.

Canon's Scangear for Linux (scangearmp2) is a piece of crap (and that is being kind).
Scanning is done at only 300 DPI (Canon G6020).
The windows version is not much of an improvement.
