You guys forgot to add the fact that Daniel beating Eli to death is a parallel to the story of the brothers Cain and Able. where one brother killed the other. That's why Eli keeps yelling out 'we're brothers' before Daniel beats him to death.
Alex Gonzalez Jones correct. Did you also notice that Daniel in the bible was the man who survived in both the hottest furnaces with I believe the hottest oils and a den of lions. Daniel can be seen as anti-daniel of sorts. Very interesting
How is that comparable ? , in cain and able story they have contrasted characters where one is driven by an evil desire and the other is good at heart , whereas in the movie both Elie and Daniel represent pretty much the same characters with slight differences
When Daniel cuts ties with H.W., claiming he never loved him, then there's a flashback to H.W. stealing Daniel's hat and it shows a legitimate bond between them, I lose it every time.
The amount of Daniel defending is ridiculous. Daniel was a terrible father period. “Oh he really did love him” he just HAD to abandon his child!!! No, you dont understand, i loved my baby boy but he broke my window so I HAD to send him to wherever!!! You don’t understand how hard it is to be a parent! I would have no hesitation fucking off my child to boarding school!!! Its cause I love him so dearly!!!
Im sorry your father left you also, but no he does not love you. Daniel did not love his son. He only loved one thing unconditionally, his obsession over the pursuit of wealth
DDL?? 😂😂😂 Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer is better than his whole career. Screaming and yelling aren’t the highlights of acting. It lies in the subtlety.
Ive seen the movie at least 8 times now and it was on my second last viewing that i noticed that Daniel shed a single tear just before getting up and leaving HW on the train. I believe he truly does love HW but it’s at odds with his ambition. The scene is punctuated by Daniel’s inability to look back at the train as is leaves the station. He’s heart broken over the tough decision he must make. His character is way more complex and nuanced than most reviews give him credit for.
He's probably sad that all the work he put into having his prop and having him around was out the door. If he really loved the kid, like you said, he wouldn't abandon him. He never abandoned him before when he had less resources, why now? Because he was more work than resource for him and the starting the fire was the last straw. Daniel is a sociopath really incapable of loving anybody but was good with the kid in his job as making him look like a dutiful father.
He insulted HW because he needed to cut ties, as HW was going into the oil business. You can see Daniel is broken up about it the next morning in a drunk stupor.
I agree. "Bastard in a basket" is simply an expression of love from the father. I see HW as the villain here for abandoning his adoptive dad and not understanding what he has done for him all this time (even keeping a secret for such a long time is no easy task). The son turned out to be deaf...
Sometimes love is not all you need. The only reason he would have to cut ties is because he's such a selfish narcissist that the thought of sharing anything(in this case business opportunity) with anyone is physically painful to him. So anyone who's not completely on team Daniel can go impale themselves. The only reason he's not the worst person in the entire movie is because he has to share even that with the equally douchy preacher.
You think that his son in the worst person in the movie? Did you even watch the same movie that I did? Daniel was a terrible father, a murderer, and a person who took advantage of anyone who did not know how valuable their land was. Daniel and Eli were extremely similar characters who just used their ablity to be persuasive in different ways. I'd say you might want to rewatch the movie.
You're way off in left field Jordan, he was talking about Daniel. Moving speech though. Back to the OP though, I think this is looking at the movie in a rosey way. I think he legitimately meant what he said and while he might have tried to be a good father, as he became more of a monster he knew his true intentions. Daniel had very little interaction with him and had no reason to be happy with him given he was going to be competition, given the light they painted Daniel in. Him waking in drunken stupor the next morning is just him upset the boy he took as his own would betray him.
That actually is not a bad name for the kid as that was his job to make Daniel look like a decent person who was taking care of his son as a single parent after his wife died which he never had.
@@Americanspy-hn2kw I agree with you. I donot know about PTA's thoughts on capitalism but I do think that many clever people think of capitalism as evil. I think these people donot realise that the comfort they live in to complain about capitalism is provided by capitalism. Capitalism is a direct result of values of liberty, freedom and private property. People who think communism is some form of egalitarian paradise donot know who benefits from such a system and what will happen to the overall welfare of the people in a country under such a system.
They completely misunderstood Daniel's relationship with H.W. The key is the private moments between them. Watch them closely and you'll see that Daniel loves H.W. Paul Thomas Anderson has said so himself. As for the 3rd act Daniels deteriorating mental state and perceived betrayal at the the hands of H.W. caused him to say those ugly things.
H.W. is Daniel's only connection to other people. His love for H.W. is genuine, which is what makes Daniel's baptism scene so powerful. There's real repentance when he cries that he's abandoned his boy. However, H.W.'s disability and the estrangement that follows shortly after permanently severs their connection. Daniel can no longer confide in him, or mold him in his own image as he would his son. Instead, after having to kill his false half-brother as well, H.W. becomes a stark reminder of just how isolated Daniel is from everyone else.
Yes, if Daniel had put HW before the money and oil, he could have been a great father. Before the hearing loss you see their connection. Daniel needed a friend and that's what HW was. But after the hearing loss their relationship changes, HW becomes bitter. Daniel's cynicism won't let him own up to his failings as a father
There Will Be Blood reminds me of Heart of Darkness. Daniel lives in a land of fantasies which consumes him and he becomes a savage. Daniel thinks he has it all but he does not have anything - he doesn't even have his own mind.
Billo1281 This is an old comment of yours but on the off-chance you see it, why so many times? What do you like about it so much or what draws you to it? Would you say it's your favorite movie? That last one about Daniel being the devil in the church I’ve never heard before. Good catch. Another thing I noticed was when the man workers first discovered oil in the 1902 scene, the first thing that happens is baby Human Worker starts crying, as if the appearance of the oil upsets him. Then at the end of the movie, H.W and Daniel's relationship comes to an end because of oil. Well done P.T. Barnum.

"That's one god damn hell of a show!" - I don't think Daniel is suppose to represent the devil, more of a misanthropic atheist who hates spiritual charlatans (even though he's a monetary charlatan).
I feel that Daniel represents the devil in a way, in some moments as you look at him like the scene when the pipe is on fire and the glow on the fire is scene and you look at him as he is hunched over like some demonic imp and also the scene where he is getting baptized and he says give me the blood so I can get out of here, again the devil in holy places

Exactly Paul Thomas Anderson made that very clear with the flashbacks after he disowns his son

Do you really think that people are worse than (for example) cats or dogs? Homo sapiens is just a biological species. We are can't be bad or good. Every our action is based by nature. Привет из России, bro.
He doesn't seem to mind bees.
Robert Turner That's because bee aren't from Earth, they migrated here from space.
that is incorrect bees are native to the planet Flarxplaxnerdry when the natives launched a spaceship a few castaway florgleborgs or "Bees" made it on board, they visited earth to dispose of the florgleborgs, they then repopulated the planet Terra
This makes so much more sense now I was so confused while watching the entire movie
HEY! I thought you guys were doing Rick and Morty?!
Yup, coming next week!
I am anticipate.
+Wisecrack oh, I can't wait!!
Can you please do "Taxidriver"? It would be perfect for this channel!
[m] This is my favorite show on RUclips. Brilliant. Keep it up!
Mr. Hermuloids is a profund expert in earth culture, how can he know so much?
0:04 holy shit, there's me!
I love this series :D Spectacular work there! Great team with some creativity fueling it!
"Give me the BLOOD Eli Give Me the BLOOD and let ME get Away"
I was just writing that lol!!!!!
Never heard of this channel before, but Christ did I chuckle at a number of snippets. Bravo.
Human worker... HW.. I didn’t know that. Excellent explanation of the themes of the movie.
How about a Hidden Meaning of an Adam Sandler movie for April Fool's?
Can't wait for the next episode. One of the best channels/series on RUclips right now.
Next do The Hidden Meaning in Safety Last!
Then follow it up with a light romp as you analyze Requiem For a Dream.
+Austen Green
I hope that when they end with modern mainstream american movies, they star doing more old stuff and maybe someday a foreign one
Keyser Soze He has done Oldboy.
The Korean original, I mean.
Austen Green OH FUCK, you got me there. But i dont know i would love a piece of french new wave XD
+Keyser Soze They've also done Akira and Trainspotting. I'd love to see them dive into real film history but they need to consider the breadth of their audience. There are still plenty of American masterpieces worth talking about.
Barnum.
At first I was like "Oh god, another fucking annoying RUclipsr doing a fucking schtick"
then I watched a little longer. Insightful, concise commentary? Humour that works and isn't overbearing? A genuine interest in the film being discussed?
Listen dude; you're alright. I hope you know that. Subscribed.
Another amazing review of a once grand culture. I hope we can soon see the hidden meaning behind Blade Runner, Total Recall, or They Live.
"That's one god damn hell of a show!" - I don't think Daniel is suppose to represent the devil, more of a misanthropic atheist who hates spiritual charlatans (even though he's a monetary charlatan).
I have waited so long for this movie to get the "Earthling Cinema" treatment. Thank you Wisecrack!
Last episode has to be the hidden meaning behind earthling cinema.
can you do the hidden meaning of the thing?
An episode on Citizen Kane would be hugely appreciated.
Do the wolf of wall street.
Capitalism
Next year...
But it's December already so next year is close!! omg got you so bad. #Dadjokes
+Wisecrack you really got him with that joke. wow. classic.
Wow cool vid. I always thought it was traditionalism vs industrialism.
PLEASE DO NIGHTCRAWLER.
these are my favorite movie reviews lol
No waaaaaaaaaaay! I made the beginning comments! I think I have a new greatest life achievement!
That "abandoned my child" part of this was hilarious.😂
The jokes in this are terrible.
Like a bag of ham...
i will now always refer to *hw* in this film as 'human worker'
"ego-testical" ahahahaha
This video was entertaining. Like a bag of old ham.
I really wish they'd just stop with the bad jokes. Give me the philosophy, give me the hidden meanings.
Yeah and it comes over as really disrespectful to the pictures being analysed. Plus I dont come here to laugh, plus if I wanted to laugh this is the last thing id watch.
+Richard Lionheart not a single person is gonna change anything for you. IF you don't get what you want here move on and don't bitch.
Are y'all just trolling? because they have other videos that do that. this series is called "earthling cinema" and the whole joke is he's an alien doing anthropology of us long dead humans... sounds like the premise went over your head a bit lol
Why watch this channel then?
