DON'T OBEY SIGNALS FROM AN UNQUALFIED PERSON

  • MotorBike waves me to overtake when there is another motorbike coming the other way.. I wouldn't have gone anyway but it just goes to show.
    I remember my driving instructor telling me that if someone signals me to go when it's not my right of way and I obey that signal, it's a failure.

    He wasn't waving you past, that was your interpretation. The moped rider was relieving fatigue in their arm. The learner is entitled to use the entire width of the road.

      Agreed. If he was waving someone past, he wouldn’t be using his left hand. Making such an assumption is both inaccurate and dangerous.

      As a learner motorcyclist I was taught to be in a commanding position in my lane; ie: in the centre of it. Never be forced into the kerb or the middle of the road, which can put you at risk.

      That's right, I suppose.. you can get pushed aside by big lorries.. Even, back in the day, when I had a Lambretta LI150, cars and lorries intimidated me to go as far left as I could and overtook with about a foot to spare.. I passed my test but I gave up two wheels as soon as I was old enough to drive a car.. it wasn't healthy back then and isn't now which is why I never intimidated motor bikes or push bikes when I'm driving

    Honestly it doesn't matter if he is a learner or not. Travelling well below the speed limit, is nearly as dangerous as travelling above it. If he/she isn't confident enough on the open road to travel at the appropriate speed, then they should stick to town.

    I would have never guessed that him shaking his arm meant that he wanted me to pass him. He could have been doing that all day long and I wouldn't know what he meant.
    It's not a universal gesture.

    • @ron2256
      @ron2256  8 дней назад

      He did it twice. You can't give ambiguous signals though.. I see a lot of horse riders waving people on when they haven't bothered to check that it's safe but some cars just go on their signal, whereas I make sure for myself even if it wastes a bit of time

      @@ron2256 It doesn't matter what he did with his arm. I would never ever interpret his gesture as a request for me to pass him.
      If he wanted to do that he would surely wave his other arm extending it horizontally, not vertically.

    People saying he had a cramp in his hand, well the throttle is on the right side of the bars not the left. You can also see his head look in his rearview mirror just as he is waving. That, I think, is why he didn't see the vehicle coming from the front of him.

    For all of you saying it was ‘hand cramp’, I don’t think it was, the second time. The speed at which they did it, plus the look… but being a learner, I think that bike coming around the corner surprised them, judging from the reaction.

      @@tobymay5909 Thanks for watching and commenting.. I learned it when I was taught to drive in 1970.. Never rely on anyone else, even if they are trying to be helpful. There was a bit on the driving test course where often, drivers would beckon you to go first even though it was their right of way, do it and test failed.. But these days you can't even rely on other drivers indicators.. I see so many cars, these days, leaving roundabouts with the wrong side indicator, I can only assume it's because newer cars indicators are hard to cancel or change from right to left, new computer controlled ones instead of nice manual ones.

    Perhaps the mopehead rider was using some advance riding techniques? I.e. riding towards the centre of the road when clear to do so, or staying clear of the near side where there are drains etc! The bike has two wheels and is more prone to wandering through shift in balance or side windage, just some things that perhaps you should consider?

    You definitely have to make up your own mind when its safe to overtake. I recently had some horse riders frantically waving me and other drivers to go past them even though it was a completely blind corner ahead. Some people really do need to be educated not to take it upon themselves to direct traffic when they haven't got a clue what they are doing and not to pressurise drivers into doing something daft.

    • @ron2256
      @ron2256  10 дней назад

      When I learnt to drive , fifty odd years ago, they taught me to look for myself. If someone waves you on and you go, if you are on your test you fail.. There was a bit on my test at a crossroads where the right of way is with the vehicle coming towards you and it was more courteous in those days and I had to just sit there until they realised I wasn't going to go or I would have failed my test
