As a high school student 42 years ago this was my first introduction to Shostakovich, and it is still one of my favorite works for orchestra. This orchestra performs it flawlessly!
Shostakovich's symphonies, string quartets, concertos, etc - the longer works - are incredibly sophisticated compositions, structurally, harmonically, thematically. Thinking of Shostakovich as a fine chef, you could think of them as delicious, involving, tremendously satisfying multi-course gourmet meals. Applying the analogy to this Festive Overture, this is an example of Shostakovich whipping up a batch of brownies - light, insubstantial, sweet, and every bit as satisfying. Not being critical. It's a personal favorite. And it's made the more remarkable considering it was written over three days in response to the Bolshoi's need for a short work like this for a performance in a few days (the orchestra sent a relay of couriers to Shostakovich's flat to pick up finished score pages every few hours so the instrumental parts could be copied in time for rehersal and the performance).
Dmitrij, you are a genius. This overture is my favorite piece of classical music bar none. It has everything: excitement, glorious orchestral color and then that lyrical section comes out of nowhere and wacks me out completely. Shostakovich is dynamic, lyrical, dramatic, and a master of the orchestra. Right now, I am in the section that makes me cry every time I hear it. Dmitrij, how could anyone be that great!!! I love you, Shostie!
This is one of my favorite light overtures, and I'm delighted to hear it done by one of my favorite orchestras! Heras-Casado is a new name to me; I'll be keeping my eye - and ear - out for more from him.
Wunderbares Orchester!
This piece will become and remain an eternal classic for the centuries to come (if mankind survive that long), though we technically call it a modern contemporary music. From this point of view, Russia in the 20th century was the greatest provider of first-class classic music-to-be.
Another fine performance from this band. Is this possibly Germany's finest orchestra? The Berliner Philharmoniker has the glamor, the spectacular venue, the elaborate recording facilities (and probably the larger budget), but from Frankfurt I hear playing which to my ear is equally excellent, and with greater clarity of sound. I have no idea what the acoustics are like in each venue for the live audiences, but for the recordings, the Philharmonie often provides sound that is too reverberant, and so sometimes slightly muddying fine detail. Whereas from Frankfurt I am priviledged to hear brilliant performances, with really excellent audio recording and video direction (these, particularly more recently perhaps?). Thank you.
Bryan Leech Interesting comment. I would agree that the HR Orchestra is one of the top ranking bandsin Germany. The same is actually true about the Frankfurt Opera House and their Orchestra.
@@bubffm Unfortunately I've had no opportunity to hear/see performances from the Opera House (and opera possibly is my greatest love), but if this orchestra is indicative of the musical standards in Frankfurt, I could well believe you.
Totally agree . This is my favourite place in youtube to experience fine programming , stellar orchestral playing and conductors and soloists that manage to avoid routine without selling out .
My High School band tried to play this overture in its end of season concert. It was way beyond our ability but we had a very forgiving audience, our parents!
Einfach atemberaubend!
Wonderful! Never imagined the piece could be as this perfect. A hundred people playing instruments of all kinds of attacks, perfectly in time at every quaver for seven long minutes! The woodwind ensemble was incredibly clear; 3:50 is a pinnacle (5:18, what have you done, good Mitya?). Brass handled some of the most extreme passages with perfect articulation and volume. Violin and viola parts from 2:42 were too full of energy that they sounded rather rough; but who would blame them when they make up for it at 4:14?
Sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Remy Elliot I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
In the band arrangement, those runs in the strings are given to the euphoniums. Impossible? For me at least it was. Another difficulty: after a while, those off beats begin to feel like downbeats. I don't see how even the pros do it!
Great rendition, the brass (especially the trumpets) could be a little stronger in the fanfare intro and ending portions. Those 2 flute players are HOT! I think I saw the conductor in a GEICO ad, wearing animal skins and holding a club.
The opening fanfares were rushed badly, though in fairness the pacing felt closer to correct from there. A good performance of this piece, in my view, is one that takes its time for those first few measures -- and again at the end.

Such a FANTASTIC ORCHESTRA sounding great as always 👍

This wonder music puts a smile not only on the face but in the heart. Fab conducting and interpretation. Love it.

Magnifique
This is a delightful Light Scherzo and it is played playfully with tongue firmly in cheek. As I am sure Schostokovich intended.
Absolutely SUBURB performance! THANK YOU!
Take that, Rural!
Thank you for sharing.
My most favorite Performance...(*´˘`*)♡
this song is so fast, you can almost see their strings start to catch on fire (also, I am wondering how I ever played this myself LOL)
😂😅
Who is singing?
@@vladimirzorc3049 No one
That 2:25 is my line
When we are practicing I'm always hype up in that part😂😂

Wow. Superb

Que es esto? Let us not say YES just because!
The opening fanfares were rushed badly, though in fairness the pacing felt closer to correct from there. A good performance of this piece, in my view, is one that takes its time for those first few measures -- and again at the end.
The tempo was a little quick for my liking, but the performance was otherwise flawless

Awkward start, great finish.
wow, too fast, chill there man! lol
