I love this Box. I find its intimate sounding , and a lovely companion to Flaming Pie. I still can feel and hear how much they compliment the other. Steel and Glass and The Song We Were Singing feel like buttons on the same suit. How I miss the music John would have shared with us.
The version of grow old with me is fantastic in surround sound, the song has finally been realised to its full potential. Thanks for the review Andrew, and when you get your full surround, you can open your ears to all those beatles surround mixes and do reviews of all those. I just got my copy of gimmie some truth by John Lennon... The ultimate box set with the two cd blu-ray the awesome hard cover book and the knickknacks inside the box, The songs sound totally clear and awesome! You can’t go wrong with this box set!
I have the John lennon anthology box set fron 98 four discs, well worth it, some great home recordings on it and some great alternative takes of songs, like imagine with an organ on it sounds really good.
I love the set much . Pauls catalogue is amazing throughout , but John goes to places where the subject matter is wider and deeper . Mother, No Body Loves You When You’re Down an out , Gimme Some Truth, plus others , still stagger me, and motivate me to think about the journey.
Can't argue with that! A friend of mine says (and I agree) that John's top 10 songs beat Paul's top 10 songs, but Paul's albums are overall better than John's.
Andrew your mate said it beautifully . It sums it up . The bottom line is that we couldn’t live without either artist . John for his important insights into life, Paul for his musical paintings that are rainbows in our daily walks. You really do a great job editing your videos. I didn’t preorder this box set until I saw your review. I really look forward to hearing it now. You seem pretty excited about it.
Among the most relevant of the new compilation 'Gimme some truth' (2020) highlights that the choruses in the verses of 'Woman' were removed, the official release of the version of 'Every man has a woman who loves him' in lead voice by Lennon and backing vocals by Ono, the unreleased live version of 'Come together' and the dimension of depth and space that the new mix of 'Stand by me' generates, but without a doubt my favorite is the new version of 'Grow old with me' with a totally clean introduction without the sound of the drum machine and the lag until the second verse of the George Martin orchestration, keeping the song's crescendo evolution and without decreasing the volume of the piano on the instrumental bridge (as did the Anthology version) and a more polished finish. In Dolby Atmos and 5.1 all the remixes are spectacular.
Hi Andrew, Happy to see that yours arrived in all its glory. Mine is on its way. I am getting it for the new remixes and the extra goodies. Not really equipped with 5.1... maybe one day. I keep hearing that the sound to the remixes are as glorious as the ones done on the Imagine box. Loved that one too. Long Live LENNON. Kudos to Universal Music, Sean and Yoko for doing right by the beautiful legacy of this master and genius. Thank you again. God bless and keep well, Tino
Hey Andrew. In the end I decided not to pick this up, although I listened to it on Spotify and I love how clear his voice is. I'm tempted now. Looks great. Hope you are keeping well
Hi Andrew - late to the party but just got this. Totally agree with your comments about the base. It’s not over the top as some have suggested but certainly brought forward and the whole mix has a new clarity and depth that I really enjoyed from start to finish. Bless You was awesome.
Andrew, this is fantastic I’m waiting for my set, thank you for this, I want to see the set for plastic Ono band I heard a rumor it’s coming, can’t wait for it, Thank You Andrew, Bless, Be Safe. Steve
Thanks for yet another excellent unboxing! I wasn’t overly impressed when they announced it, but once I started to here some of the songs in the build up- instant karma and mind games I was blown away!!! I think you’re right about all the albums being released now, just like the Beatles and McCartney ones can’t wait for it. Ps after my initial shock email off amazon about the delivery date. It just turned up 😀
Great video mate! I heard these mixes on Spotify I love the sound of the album! I’m not personally a Vinyl collector but I do collect CDs and am really excited to get one of the CD versions of this.
Hi Andrew. I would love to know your feelings about a deluxe reissue of Sometime In New York City. It's a...controversial Lennon record; would anyone be interested in more of it I wonder? Have you ever heard of unissued material from the sessions? The thing I'd like to hear is a complete re-do basically. It's complicated because you have the addition of Yoko, Elephant's Memory Band, and isn't Zappa on the live set?
I'd be very interested in a STINYC box set! Several of John and George's early/mid 70s albums have muddy mixes that feel like they could be massively improved. I'm not familiar with any unreleased stuff of that era, but I enjoy the main album so would like to hear more.
Thanks for this video Andrew, I was undecided on what version to get but having watched your video I have now picked up the same version as yourself and am pleased I have as even with its minimalistic approach it is very well put together especially with the book which tells the story of the words and making of the music included. I am slowly working through the discs but very pleased with what I have heard so far.
Cheers Gary, glad you're enjoying it! I've not had chance to go through the book properly yet, but been giving the music plenty of attention, some great new mixes there.
Thanks for the video and review. You convinced me that I need to have this box. I really like the Instant Karma remix that we already heard. Will also get full surround soon so that will add another dimension to this. The book "plastic ono band" is already officially announced on the John Lennon site, looks really great. I can also recommend the book " John Lennon 1980" half way trough that now. Hard to stop reading that one!
Thanks Peppar, that 1980 book sounds interesting, as it's of course a massive year for John (even discounting the awful way it ended) and I've never known too much about it.
The Mind Games songs also sound great! Still ploughing my way through the rest of it.... There's just one song so far that I haven't liked the remix of. I'll say at some point once I've given it some more tries....
I thought about the 4LP deluxe, but you don’t get the book / blu-ray etc , just the LP’s (& sticker!) which wasn’t really that deluxe at all when compared to the cd set - so the book/cd set it was !
It's strange that the industry seems to have decided that vinyl sets don't get the bells and whistles that the CD sets get but there you go, seems to be the way it is!
@@AndrewDixonMusic I guess they hope by splitting the goods between sets people will buy both & they can double their money ! I’m sure lots of vinyl fans will end up getting the cd set too just to get the book etc
Hi Andrew, I picked up the 2cd collection as I only wanted the new sound which I think is excellent. It also contains the poster which I will frame face side out, looks great. I am disappointed with the 20 page booklet though as it does not give any info on the tracks or on anything for that matter just some average pictures which I could well have done without in lieu of some informative text.
Hi Mike, I guess they needed that as a main selling point for the Deluxe box to encourage people in that direction. I think with both John and Paul's reissues lately, one good thing is that they are generally making all or the vast majority of the music available at a low price, and only charging big for the extra stuff.
Hi Andrew - a very nice review mate. A few very odd comments here with some very strange opinions!. Can I say that, just because someone doesn’t want to buy this for one reason or another - it’s not a reason to put the whole thing down - it’s a rip of, I don’t like the packaging, it’s a gimmick etc etc, 🙄 Like a lot of fans, I wasn’t sure if I needed this initially, but once I heard how great these new mixes are and the quality of the presentation and packaging, I picked up the deluxe set and I’m really pleased I did, absolutely no regrets, There is absolutely nothing cheap about it, it’s put together really well, excellent quality packaging too - well worth picking up, Thanks again,
Thanks! Completely agree, everyone always has the choice whether or not to buy something like this. I pass on quite a few Beatles related releases, but I don't begrudge their existence! 🙂👍
I can't help thinking they've held some things back (Mother and Hold On being 2 Plastic Ono Band examples) as a way to ensure demand for the album box sets when they come.
For some reason it look's like we will have to wait a little bit longer to get this version in Canada... pre-ordered mine a long time ago, still no delivery date yet. Thank you for taking the time to do these very interesting and informative videos!
Hi mate, A nice box set, got mine yesterday plus the 4 LP Box. The sound is superb. I think it is a fine box to honour John. Is it? .......... Is it being released, the Plastic Ono Band Box Set? And yes indeed, it would be great if ATMP will be released as well. But for now, we have to go for the Black Friday release of George's My Sweet Lord 7 inch. Take care and stay safe.
Hello there! Just a question do you know anything about a John Lennon song called I need you? I believe it is from 1969 abbey road recording I would really appreciate any info
Evening Andrew , i was just wondering , is your imagine box set called Imagine The Ultimate Collection - Super Deluxe & poster or is it Imagine The Ultimate Collection Super Deluxe Box, Blu-Ray & Book Bundle ? John
Well Andrew , I have to agree with you that is a Big hint about a deluxe edition of the plastic one band coming this year , but when this year we are into October now , only November & December to come , I think personally they would aim for the Christmas Market. , can't wait for the news .
I'm now interested in the john & yoko / plastic one band Book thats due to be published on October 29th , that should be a fascinating read . So Andrew do you think the deluxe plastic one band , will come out next month or for the Christmas Market ( December ) ? John
I've got that book on order, should be good. Honestly no idea on release date at the moment, but I do quite like the idea of it coming out on the 50th anniversary, 11th December, the same day as it looks like McCartney III comes out, that would be a hell of a day!
Great review as always! About to give my box a listen tonight. Mainly the 5.1 mixes that Paul Sinclair from SuperdeluxeEdition blog praised to the skies. :) Do you have access to the remixes Lennon cd’s that came out in the early 2000’s? I’m curious about how they sound next to each other. I have them all and might have to do a comparison some day. P.S. my Blu-ray Disc was also not in its proper place when I opened my box 😂
Hi Tobias, I don't have all of those early 2000 remixes, but I have Plastic Ono Band and Mind Games. I especially thought the Mind Games remix was so much better than the original mix, but the mixes here on this new collection so far to me sound even better.
Andrew Dixon Thanks! I did a quick compare tonight and although the previous remixes sounded great, I totally agree that these new ones really hits the spot! The 5.1 mixes are also very nice!
I have been listening to a lot of these tracks from the new 'Ultimate Mixes' and to my ear the vocal has definitely been pushed far forward. As a result though the music is almost in the background, and the bass is lacking for me.Still it's a nice collection, with mixes that are different, and possibly as you or some other reviewer said, the way way forward for the 50th anniversary sets. Tbc
Andrew , I like how you have arranged your collection , very well arranged , wish I could arrange it so good , are you into vinyl or more into cds or Both ?
Thanks, it;s a constant battle now every time something new is added as I;m seriously short of spare space in here. If I could only do 1 I'd have to choose CDs because I get more opportunities to listen to digital, and also often many bonus tracks are more easily available on CD 🙂👍. Vinyl is for when I know I have no interruptions and I can relax for 40 ish minutes!
I'm a bit confused on this one at the moment. The book definitely says "remixed by Paul Hicks 2020" next to the Imagine songs, BUT, it also says underneath that the "Imagine remixes are also available in the box set Imagine (Ultimate Collection)"... Well, both those statements can't be true, only one can be! I'll post more if and when I know more.
@@AndrewDixonMusicI just did a side-by-side comparison on all the overlapping tracks, and if they aren't the same mixes, they're superbly similar, like so similar there's no point in making a new mix. Power To The People is different, I'm quite sure (The saxophone is more buried in the new one), and Jealous Guy might be a different one, but the difference was so minute I'm pretty sure it was just my equipment (Not hi-fi at all). Don't take my word for it, but other than Power For The People, I think they're all the same
@@robintownrobintown Yes really hard to tell a difference, it might even be that the only thing that's changed is they've shaved off some silence from the ends of some of the songs, as they run shorter here than on Imagine, but it seems to only be silence that's been cut. Maybe that's enough to trigger the 2020 remix credit!?
@@AndrewDixonMusic That isn't enough in my book. I only checked the waveform in PttP but it was different, though that could be because it's simply a different release
I thought half of the tracks really were remixed very well, the other half not so much. And, can someone please tell me why they included Angela from SINYC, not the song New York City, which IMHO, desperately needs remixing!? But, must say, Instant Karma, Working Class Hero, Mind Games, Bless You, Steel & Glass and Whatever Gets You Thru The Night are spectacular remixes and a big improvement.
I've listened to Whatever Gets You Thru the Night since recording this video, and agreed it sounds great! Maybe New York City is being held back so it's new for when that album gets a similar release?
Well, the official John Lennon facebook site just linked this vid in response to a fans query regards the POB delux edition. Comments section. How cool is that?
@@AndrewDixonMusic 5 hours ago. Look for the post thanking American fans for the album chart position. Then in the comments section, you should see the response from the official page! I wonder who came across you....maybe Sean Lennon himself as he has retweeted a few fan vids on twitter!
Nice video but I have all these songs already which sound good enough to me, so I'm not going to be paying for songs I already own, enjoyed the video though.
So I bought this cd,but no this box set and yes a small package with two cds only and book, more poster and lirics in japonese translation, but in original set.In this time I found the price cheap, more as Amazon, because your price was expensive,if buy by him.I bought direct of Universal and coming by half price yet as Amazon. The sound is good and songs are those ready know by all ok.Uchino of Japan.Thank you.
I call this the perfect addition to Paul’s “Pure McCartney” set. What i wouldve loved is if they would add a special remix of the “Menlove Avenue” acoustic version of “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down & Out” (i always loved that version alot better than the “Walls & Bridges” version.) ruclips.net/video/z0Sgwt8GAc8/видео.html THIS is gold!
Why waste your time on the the deluxe edition, when there's very likely an ultra deluxe version available, numbered, with a colored vinyl 45, 3 unique posters, and a slice of apple pie?
Great review, but not enough to make me want to purchase at this stage. Underwhelming packaging, not a fan of the front photo or the arrow , don't really need a couple of postcards and sticker. Book looks interesting. And why is Happy Xmas ( war is over ) on every comp ? Anyway I'll listen on Spotify. Let's hope they do a better job with Plastic Ono Band. Sorry about the negativity.
I thought the same till I actually purchased it, the remixes are amazing, I’ve heard these songs so many times over the years, and these are best they have sounded. The book is beautiful with some excellent reading. Your entitled to your opinion of course, but I can tell you, it’s excellent value for money at under £50. Also, bare in mind, it’s an essential Lennon best of box, how can you leave Happy Xmas off? - bit like leaving She Loves You off a Beatles hits compilation. It’s one of the most well known Lennon tracks! - bit daft to ask why it’s always on, You might of well asked - why is imagine on every Lennon compilation - just saying! I love the packaging, silver and gold, classic and clean and a front cover picture that hasn’t been used over and over - nothing underwhelming about it - it’s just a matter of taste! I got my deluxe set last week from Amazon, and now they haven’t got any left - so pleased I did!
Your 'I dig a pygmy" tshirt is the coolest thing ever.
too cool for school. I laffed my ass off. it was only in recent years that I even realized what Lennon was saying there.
Where can I get one?🙂
I've listened to some Mind Games and Walls & Bridges tracks on Itunes and am enjoying the boosted bass and spaciousness of the new mixes.
Great box set. I'm waiting for the Plastic Ono Band box.
My top 3 Lennon albums!
1.Double fantasy.
2.Shaved fish.
3.Imagine.

Might have already been asked, but are the mixes from Imagine the same one as in the 2018 box?
I'm a bit confused on this one at the moment. The book definitely says "remixed by Paul Hicks 2020" next to the Imagine songs, BUT, it also says underneath that the "Imagine remixes are also available in the box set Imagine (Ultimate Collection)"... Well, both those statements can't be true, only one can be! I'll post more if and when I know more.
As far as I've been able to tell, these are indeed new Imagine mixes, but to be honest. I can't tell a difference!
Can you buy this on a 2cd
Yes that's an option! 🙂👍
Elton John Lennon is here!
What, just now?!
@@AndrewDixonMusic 5 hours ago. Look for the post thanking American fans for the album chart position. Then in the comments section, you should see the response from the official page! I wonder who came across you....maybe Sean Lennon himself as he has retweeted a few fan vids on twitter!
Seen it, thanks! Sean shared everyone's video except mine! 😄
@@AndrewDixonMusic Well he (or someone) has now! Awesome recognition - but it's well deserved.
Existing... 😁
Got mine today hopeing the blu ray was the videos but it’s not
Nice video but I have all these songs already which sound good enough to me, so I'm not going to be paying for songs I already own, enjoyed the video though.
He sang Cold Turkey like Mark Bolan on purpose...
I’m really desperate to hear news of the 50th anniversary edition of all things must pass,at least the price if not the release date.🤞
Same! I'm hoping once the attention on this box dies down then Paul and George can have their big releases announced (please!)
Andrew Dixon yes,it’s all exciting stuff.👍
How much was it?
WhatRecords.co.uk was cheapest I found, £39.99

Cheers Andrew 👍
always preferred 'GIMME SOME TRUTH ' to 'IMAGINE'.
Bring on dylans next bootleg series I say andrew
Yeah! Heard any rumours yet of what it might be?
@@AndrewDixonMusic no but hoping for a nice big dylan and the dead deluxe set im up for tha
live in new york boksset
I call this the perfect addition to Paul’s “Pure McCartney” set. What i wouldve loved is if they would add a special remix of the “Menlove Avenue” acoustic version of “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down & Out” (i always loved that version alot better than the “Walls & Bridges” version.)
ruclips.net/video/z0Sgwt8GAc8/видео.html THIS is gold!
What's happening with George Harrison's archive. Surely they are missing a trick by witholding so much?
I agree, surely they're going to do a big series of 50th anniversary releases!?
Yoko wanting more money.
Maybe so, luckily everyone has a choice whether or not to part with any 👍
Why waste your time on the the deluxe edition, when there's very likely an ultra deluxe version available, numbered, with a colored vinyl 45, 3 unique posters, and a slice of apple pie?
Great review, but not enough to make me want to purchase at this stage. Underwhelming packaging, not a fan of the front photo or the arrow , don't really need a couple of postcards and sticker. Book looks interesting. And why is Happy Xmas ( war is over ) on every comp ?
Anyway I'll listen on Spotify. Let's hope they do a better job with Plastic Ono Band. Sorry about the negativity.
No problem Philip, sounds like you've made the right decision for you, I had a bit of a listen in Spotify and it sounded good there too. 🙂👍
I thought the same till I actually purchased it, the remixes are amazing,
I’ve heard these songs so many times over the years, and these are best they have sounded. - bit daft to ask why it’s always on,
You might of well asked - why is imagine on every Lennon compilation - just saying!
I love the packaging, silver and gold, classic and clean and a front cover picture that hasn’t been used over and over - nothing underwhelming about it - it’s just a matter of taste!
I got my deluxe set last week from Amazon, and now they haven’t got any left - so pleased I did!
@@AndrewDixonMusic Found it today for a good price and have taken the plunge.
