McCartney could take a lesson from the Lennon's estate on how to produce a boxset. Includes a massive amount of listening material and selling it for cheaper than McCartney's past couple of archive sets.
I completely agree. I love Paul’s music and always will. One major difference I see is that all of Paul’s box sets are remasters vs John Lennon’s which are remixes which to me certainly gives these albums/songs a new dimension in listening. I’ll also add I think the outtakes, element mix, etc are better which to me gives more value to these box sets. John Lennon’s estate has done a fantastic job with producing these box sets.
Plastic Ono band is my favourite Lennon album. What has always struck me is how serene and calm the album cover is and yet the music contained within is raw and brutal.
Great review, Andrew! As you might be the first to review this piece of Lennon archival history, you yourself are now part of Beatle history. Pretty crazy!
I'm so happy they sent you this early. I can't wait to hear the blu-ray 5.1 surround sound mixes. I was let down by the 5.1 mixes on "Gimme Some Truth" but the "Imagine" 5.1 were incredible. Thanks so much for sharing early. It's made me even more excited about this upcoming box set! I'm also glad they're consistent and the same height. Thank goodness for that as well.
As for the 5.1 surround mixes, this set is also extremely disappointing. Pages 102-103 of the book show the "Surround Sound Maps", which only show rear channels for "Mother", "Isolation", "Give Peace A Chance", "Cold Turkey", and "Instant Karma". I had to turn up the rear channel volume to double the front channels to hear a balanced sound with a direct output feed (not surround matrixing). Even then, most of the rear sound was duplicating the front channels with very little discrete separation. While some of the tracks are John's voice and piano with few extra instruments, there could have been a lot more front to rear separation, instead of front left to center to front right 3.1 surround. The "Imagine" 5.1 surround was good, but the "Imagine" 4.0 (quad) wins hands down IMHO regarding channel separation, duplicating the 70s quad 8-track. Other opinions will obviously vary.

Wow, amazing mate. Congratulations on getting them early, and thank you for the look into this fantastic little boxset. Really looks like the lennon estate is on the ball with these new remixes. Certainly better than 20 years ago when Yoko was reluctant to allow the original multi track tapes to be used for new mixes but i can understand that at the time. I think she waited until the perfect time to do this now because it is now possible to get the most out of those tapes and 20 years ago the improvements were slightly better than the original mixes but nowhere near the sound quality that can be achieved now. So kudos for choosing her moment. Although i believe Sean is highly responsible for these latest achievements but of course Yoko is the owner of this material and would have to have said yes. So a big thank you all round to Sean, Yoko and now to you Andrew for bringing this to us like this. We know when you show us something like this its straight talking and no bullshit. I'm learning as we're going along with these remixes, I really just want the original album remixed and the extra singles from that period. I never listen to the outtakes and various studio stuff anymore since I bought Sgt. Pepper. It's an awful lot of money to pay for things you won't listen to when you can listen to them online otherwise. But I truly love the remixes. I know George is next and I'm hoping for McCartney to remix his stuff (not without giving us London Town and Back To The Egg Archives, first, though).
Another great unboxing Andrew. As a Beatles and their solo work fan it's great to see a like minded fan give an honest review that the fans want to hear/see. Too many publications don't understand what we as fans want to know. Well deserved on holding an advanced copy. I look forward to the other videos.

The first UK pressing of Plastic Ono Band will always be one of my favorite albums, very raw, very direct, but I always find it interesting to listen to new mixes. I enjoyed the ones that come in Gimme Some Truth (2020).
That looks like a really nice set and I’ll look Forward to the 2lp review as that’s the one I’ve ordered and I’m really looking forward to the release date though it looks like it’s been delayed a week but I’m sure it will be worth the wait

Yeah because reviewers / critics etc never get advance release copies of cds/books/films before the release date do they ? Release dates often change for logistical reasons & nuts to me that someone would cancel an order just because a release date wasn’t EXACTLY as it had been announced ! 🤪😆🤪
If and when a delay is made official Joe, I can guarantee it will not be a decision taken lightly or without good reason. The production pressures on record manufacturers at the moment are huge, and sometimes plans have to change as a result unfortunately.

This guy is moaning that this is delayed by 4 days, and McCartney 3 was delayed by a week. I'm a fan of Aretha Franklin and a release we were due to have in November 2020 was put back to July 2021. The upside I have with this is I have more time to save for it.

I wish they would do more for the LP version. I personally don’t have a CD player anymore but love buying the vinyls. They just don’t seem to give it as much material

I agree.... I love more paul....but with lennon they are making a better job. They putting 5.1 !! and a lot of takes....good for john....
Certainly better value than Paul's recent box sets. Though they are also beautifully presented.

Getting a few review copies out is not difficult or the same as maneuvering thought the massive and blocked top distribution system.

Hi Andrew! 'It'll Be Me' was sung by Jerry Lee Lewis in 1957 and was also a number 2 single by Cliff and the Shadows five years later!
Wonderful looking box sets and great content for the latest one. In my view, they're superior to the Beatles SDEs.
so only the main album is in 5.1 this time? the sourround of the raw mixes from imagine were the highlight of that box for me.

Amazon emailed to say it’s delayed in the UK now too until April 27th, but their website still says April 23rd so 🤷♂️
I'm not quite sure yet what's happening with that, hopefully there will be some official announcement soon to let people know the state of play.

I wish they would do more for the LP version. I personally don’t have a CD player anymore but love buying the vinyls. They just don’t seem to give it as much material

No plans to, I'm happy with the 2018 clear vinyl I got.
What I don't understand is why my Amazon (US) order of this (ordered on day 1) has been pushed back to June for delivery. But I really appreciate this advance look at the contents, and look forward to your listening review.
