Dear Marie Diop, You are absolutely correct - this example is a AAA-3 argument, NOT a AAA-2, which makes it invalid,. Thank you so much for catching this mistake. My bad. But now you and I both know that you understand this perfectly. I'll post an annotation in the video. Thanks again!
I have read my chapter 3 times, struggling to make sense of the material. I just watched your 5.1 & 5.2 videos, and you put everything into perspective for me. You have such a wonderful way of explaining everything, and I cannot thank you enough!!
thanks for these extremely informative videos, Mark. i would love to have u as my professor at my Uni anytime, since my teacher teaches pathetically.. blessed to have found your videos just at the right time. god bless you bro. love from Pakistan :)
Thank You for this video, it was extremely informative and helpful. I'm currently using the same book for an online class (I wasnt able to register for the in class portion) I read and read the material over and sometimes I just need a visual example done. I wish I had found your videos ahead of time.
Thank you very much for this video. It really helped me understand the material in the textbook (I'm using Hurley's book too). I feel more optimistic about doing well in the class. :)
Your videos are very helpful. For the first time i got confused with one of the examples you did, on this video at 25:34( the first example). My answer was different for the figure. I concluded that it is figure 3. Is it possible that you have mistaken? Again thanks for these very detailed videos :)
Do you have a video explaining "why" the moods are are assigned to specific syllogisms. I'm better at abstract concepts explained then memorizing what is valid as such.
Thank you so much! I have a quick question where would the term 'this' call. In the 'all' category or 'some'. Ex: All chickens have feathers. This animal has feathers. So this animal is a chicken
Hi Amy, I think your argument can be funneled down to the following (I have reworded it, but I think this is your argument): No beliefs produced by reason are sufficient to influence the will alone. Some moral beliefs are sufficient to influence the will alone. Therefore, No moral beliefs are beliefs produced by reason. This would give us the following form: No B are W Some M are W Therefore, No M are B (I had to convert your conclusion to a true statement here, because standard form requires ultimately that we make claims about what is the case rather than what is not. The difficulty in the translation concerns the negations. I used the square of opposition where a false I statement is a True E statement) But, there is a problem - the argument ends up being invalid. Can you see why? Good luck on this. I hope this helps. All the best, M T
+Mark Thorsby I draw a venn diagram and upload to the link postimg.org/image/xfalpypcv/ It is invalid because the contents of the premises do not contain the content of the conclusion?
thank you sir now i am finally able to solve these problems you are doing great job cuz i get lecture in class one time but your any time when we i need or in case forget
HI~Professor Thorsby!I have a question on a Standard Form Categorical Syllogism. I have to translate the question into standard form but I'm not sure about the answer. The question :Although each and every belief produced by reason is impossible to influence a person’s will and actions by itself, we cannot deny that at least some moral beliefs are capable of exerting such influence. Therefore the saying that some moral beliefs are produced by reason is incorrect. My answer is All m are p Some s are m Some s are p I'm not sure if I get the correct answer. Thanks for you help!
hello, professor Thorsby I just want to know if you made any videos about soundness unsoundness, validity invalidity, and true or false. because I always get mixed up with those and I really want to get it once and for all. Thank you. And your videos are really helpful Tracy Majdalani

Mark, This has been very helpful, your explanations are very lucid and interesting. I do want to make sure I understand \ | | / At the end of the video, I paused and did the example problems before you explained them. I got AAA-3 instead of AAA-2 Can you tell me where I'm messing up?
using aplia - it did not explain as well. im an online student and trying to understand this concept without being taught it was confusing. i will be returning to watch more vids. thanks so much!
