So we originally canceled this Let's Try because we felt guilty after finishing it. We obviously never set out to bash the creator or anything, but we made comments about what we assumed to be an intentionally flawed protagonist and as things went on it became more and more clear that this was more of a self-insert, so it felt mean after it was too late. The game also has a certain VERY EXTRA writing style that I think we're all vaguely familiar with from being online, and we both find it grating. There was also some harsh dissonance between expectations vs reality, where we've come to expect furry visual novels to have fairly grounded characters and thought that the game would more sincerely deal with social anxieties, but this is a bit more akin to those anime where the “socially awkward” character is actually pretty normal and has a dozen women falling for him. Like, you can write that, but we were confused lol Ultimately, we think the video is entertaining and made in good faith, but we also weren't sure we wanted it to be out there when the target is a solo indie developer. But over the last couple weeks, people who have seen it have insisted that it's fine, and more importantly, the developer tweeted this: “HOW WOULD I KNOW MY WRITING IS ANY GOOD IF YOU DON'T CRITICIZE ME!?!!? STOP BEING HORNY AND RIDICULE THE WAY I DESCRIBE BEING HORNY AND SOCIALLY INEPT! TELL ME HOW BAD MY WRITING IS IN SOCIALLY AWKWARD! TELL ME ITS CRINGE AND FULL OF "Its" instead of "It's"!!! PIZZA!!!” Like always, because of the writing style I honestly still can't tell if this is a sincere request or some kind of bit. But hell, I'm tired of going back and forth on this point and I'm gonna go ahead and take it as a sign, I guess. If you see this Monchimutt, good luck on your project!
Mochimutt is pretty chill about stuff. He's probably being pretty sincere about the critique. While it sucks that you guys didn't enjoy it, I still enjoyed your work in reading it!
I feel like the differences between how college works in this VN vs. how they work in the US is because the author is Filipino and is writing this furry college based on Philippine colleges. The lunchbox was pretty weird, though. The Filipino perspective also explains why $30 per week is enough for food and a $60 phone is expensive, why the 13th best college in the country is just okay, and why 18-year-olds are allowed to drink.
29:35 Anxiety isn't just in crowded spaces. I get REALLY nervous whenever I'm in an empty public space, worrying that it's closed, I'm late, I'm at the wrong place, etc. Even if I don't have somewhere I need to find, I still assume whenever I'm alone that I must be doing something wrong. I guess that doesn't qualify as "social" anxiety specifically, but the fear comes from thinking your next social interaction will be someone chastising you. Overall, I don't like this game or its protagonist, but I did relate to him in that one moment (until hornyness somehow snapped him out of a panic attack), having also been alone and terrified on school grounds. EDIT: Should have watched the whole thing before commenting. The conversation at the end makes me think he has agoraphobia, with open spaces being a common trigger for agoraphobia and Jayce saying he "couldn't get away in time." Also still don't understand why it mentioned he "heard sounds that he knows aren't there," during the panic scene; what is that a symptom of? My best read on this character is that he's socially awkward, selectively anxious, and has an unrelated case of agoraphobia.
I was literally just thinking about how it feels like this was meant to take place in a high school when you guys brought it up lol. I can only imagine it was changed cause it's 18+. Writing aside, this game actually has great art direction.
I’m so ashamed to say that in my GCSEs (British version of the exams you take at the age of 16) I used the ‘ “~~~~~~~.” , ‘ thing so many times in my History essays and I hadn’t realised until now that it was grammatically incorrect. I’m horrified😭
another red furred wolf, who is hispanic and might be from mexicio and slips Spanish words into his conversation and likes to call the MC cute little nicknames
I put this while drawing and I couldn't stop snickering for a solid minute when you added the echo for Toaster's cringe comment it was hilarious. Also the talk about ego was really interesting makes me want to have an entire episode just toaster chatting about life stuff xP
It definitely feels like it was originally written with the characters being in school, not university, and at some point got rewritten to age them up. In addition to the way they were acting, David wearing the collar put me in mind of the anime trope of the edgy/loner kid that acts like they secretly have powers as if they were the protagonists of an action anime when they’re actually a supporting character in a more grounded/slice of life anime. As for them drinking, depends on where this is set; for example, in the U.K. you can buy alcohol from age 18, and if you’re having a meal can drink it with your meal from age 16. This could be set somewhere with similar or even more lenient drinking laws, especially as the setting doesn’t even have to conform to real life laws. Overall this looks like something that’s more fun to watch someone play than it is to play yourself, so while a part of me kinda wants to see you guys keep playing, I can’t blame you for not wanting to play any more of it. Especially, given your pinned comment, that it could easily devolve into tearing into it and meanly picking on every grammatical mistake out of frustration without meaning to, and that’s something neither of you wants to happen, nor is it something we’d particularly want to watch. I will say that there are some good bits; I did like what they did with the sprites animation-wise rather than having them be static, although the John chasing David gag went on a little too long.
Tom route is better as it more character driven and romatical. With maccon is more funny and horny. I do like the story as it much more visual driven then others with the animation
Honestly I think what sells this VN for me is Jayce's reactions to things through his sprite animation. I don't love all of the humor, but I find it to be very entertaining overall.
I don’t think I could last playing this game at all but if I gaslight myself into ignoring the context and main character I’d probably get invested in David and John
13:37 "Like a typical homosexual male, your mind brings up a song about dicks" Is that typical (I haven't heard about a correlation between being gay and having musical skills)? I am also wondering if the reverse is true. 53:55 The Echo character was called Luche Lobo (which literally means "hopscotch wolf" or "seaweed wolf" in Spanish - they probably were going for "fighting wolf" though, which would be "lobo de lucha"). This one (El Tigre Lobo) would be "The Tiger Wolf".
I gotta say, this being essentially back to back with Shelter, a game that also has a very very heightened and "wacky" tone, is so weird. "Oh it starts kind of weird but Shelter has a 5 page conversation about dicks, and that game's great, lets see what happens!" Followed by being dumbstruck the whole time that this was just.... like this, indefinitely. Wow. I don't get what's even being evoked, like when you have tropey silly characters they're supposed to at least be recognizable? Also the way that panic attack was described is 100% a "well researched" piece of writing that totally fails to capture what panic, or even just anxiety, feels like. Very very surreal.
Coming in, I figured the main character would have a kind of social anxiety not trigger social anxiety. The writing is like a whirlwind that just seemed to suck up any thought that came to mind and spit it back out. Structurally, not sure where it is trying to lead events given it seems more like a stack of ideas and not planned. Was honestly hopeful at the base idea cause Jayce is listed as a half cat so maybe could have touched on hybrids and how that could effect him socially/mentally/physically like with Legoshi being quarter reptile. Regardless, will try this for myself, I'm just more mentally prepared for it now.
I haven't seen this video in particular yet, I don't have time rn, but I noticed from the preview they ended up with the brown wolf route, and that kinda explains the general comments and the harshness of em and stuff, because the actual core of the VN is in mainly other routes. This one, especially at the start, is just very lighthearted and just the mc being horny for this guy, who is actually completely uninterested in him and just misinterprets all the the MC's behavior for other stuff. The other routes get a lot more emotional and actually romantic and not just unrequited hornyness for one dude you found by chance, and bring up the classism and "racism" aspect you mentioned as well, on top of keeping the silly tone and stuff.
@@Fannintendociccio1 That's actually good to hear that the main body of work does actually have substance beyond high energy comedy. Just makes it very odd that the author/creator introduces a route option almost immediately and it is so jarring to experience. Not against a light hearted route option being included, is just odd that it can occur off of like the second choice.
@@Zept-01 yup, I did personally mention this to some other people that ended up on this route on RUclips and they also confirmed enjoying the other one much more. (And Jayce is actually very much not a self-insert either) About the immediate route option, it is jarring technically, but when you download the game one of the first thing you get on itchio is a disclaimer about that, that choosing the direction is what splits the routes, so normally you would know about it. I guess toaster and Keith didn't mention in the vid or read it on there. It's unfortunate it's this VN that got hit by the inconvenience of not being able to properly understand or get what's good behind a work in just 60 minutes, because there is a lot of interesting stuff going on, first and foremost with this VN being unparalleled when it comes to the detail and care and quantity of expressions and animations of the sprites, that alone is a joy to watch.
@@Fannintendociccio1 Oh yeah, the art, expressions and sprite work are very good and dynamic from what I saw in this. Must be a real benefit to the story it wants to tell.

@@toastedringtail I might be wrong but i think that Tom’s has more content (a few thousand words longer) as in it has been updated more than the others. Yea...home room is not a thing in any university or college I've ever heard of. This was supposed to be a plot about high schoolers with romance options with older men, then was rewritten to fit more to an audience outside the Phillipines.
This VN, man "Your panic attack was conquered by the power of sexy" ....That's- not how panic attacks work or feel like I- what's the tone supposed to be here 💀💀💀
I feel so upset about it. The one time I had a panic attack I felt like I was actually going to die. So my overall distress was making it worse and worse. But yea, a sexy man would def snap me out of it faster than you can say banana 🙃
35:33 oh I don't remember this scene being that heavy on the sniffing lol prob cuz I played before the rewrite 1:25:35 also in past builds he was a student darn it they didn't make it to the Tom cg (so close)
Welp… I understand your pinned comment now 😅 That was unexpectedly difficult to watch… and not the same reason as you 😂 You definitely have a….. lot more critical thots when experiencing this than I did. And it’s unfortunate cuz there’s different routes that differ quite drastically between certain scenes, with context and stuff…. I guess you have to turn your brain off more than you’re capable of to enjoy this… shame you’ll probably never see this again, but hey… what can you do...
I'll be honest I have an alarm clock separate from my phone purely for aesthetic reasons. Yes it's one of those very old alarm clocks with the two bells on top because I liked the Garfield Show as a kid.
Is the let’s try series limited to furry projects & VNs right now? I’m assuming when you say you’ve covered a lot of audience favorites you’re referring to that niche, because if you keep the series there is a mountain of good games to try out
I used to cover whatever I got codes for in my inbox, and I've got a backlog of like 7k emails right now, but I liked focusing on the VNs instead. People seem to have liked it, too, since the furry Let's Trys have vastly outperformed how these videos used to do. Hitting about 1k was the norm. I've done over 800 over the years: ruclips.net/p/PL5dr1EHvfwpPZdMopjSl2d4nhM1xrOi5P
Don't quite agree to the "but they can't drink" criticism. In pretty much all of the world, they can drink past 18. It's weird to assume, that, even if the setting is "fantasy furry America" it'd have the same arbitrary laws.
I hated it at first bc the dialog was CRINGE but Jayces animations and Toms route won me over its cute but stupid and with every other vn feeling increasingly bleak of late sometimes cute but stupid is nice
There were some valid criticisms here with narrative pacing and grammar, but man was there a lot of punching down happening. I won't comment too much, but your note about your expectations of FVNs having 'grounded characters' is definitely telling that you haven't read that many, considering that a lot of them pay homage to the original Japanese FVN Morenatsu, so anime-like themes and nuances are very common. It feels to me as if you've come into this genre with your cup already full (no doubt from the amazing writing from the Echo Project team), and I'm afraid you'll be very disappointed trying out what other creators have to offer. I hope in the future, you'll try to keep an open mind. After all, these creators likely aren't novelists or professional game devs -- they're just people in our fandom and community trying their best to enrich it.
@@KeithBallardA Sorry for that ignorant comment, it was a raw reaction and I should have considered my words better. I still think, however, that this was a bit harsh despite the fact that Monchimutt was okay with it. Socially Awkward's style is no outlier in FVNs either, and that's intentional. Dismissing it as cringe, I feel, was a bit short-sighted and unfortunate. Not saying that you had to like it. But considering that you used your quite negative reaction to this FVN for content without an open mind (which is what it came off to me as, watching all 2hrs of it), well it was a bit disheartening to say the least. When you get recommended another FVN from a 1-person creator like this, and you don't enjoy it, are you also going to use this platform to dig into it? That's my concern, is all. I don't mean to come off as attacking you, I do respect the work you make from the content I have watched from you. This was just an unexpected vibe that I guess I was not here for.
@@toastedringtail I never argued anything about the genre having a low bar. A commonly used trope that you don't find enjoyable does not necessarily equate to terrible writing. That's just subjective at this point and frankly, little bit bad-faith. I can be critical of this let's try just as you two can be critical of this visual novel, and I respect our differences of opinion. That's all I'll say, and I meant no offence whatsoever.
We're not trying to go after anyone. We specifically felt bad about this video and sat on it for two weeks, showing it in controlled contexts in an attempt to gauge whether it's releasable or not because we specifically didn't want to harm a creator. Hence me launching it with that long pinned comment, etc. It literally had me questioning whether I should put an end to the run of furry VN let's trys because it's not really fun anymore if the well starts to run dry and I have to start worrying about giving my honest reactions. I released the video finally after several people claimed we were fair and the creator himself made a tweet requesting more honest feedback.
Wow. I remember reading an early demo for this a few years ago. It wasn´t great then, but it seems like the project has since gone through some heavy rewriting and has gotten immensely worse in the process.
This VN was painful to read with y'all. The art is nice, and there's clearly effort made to animate the sprites, but ooof the writing. It really reads like a piece of furry porn, with characters that mostly serve to move the plot to sexy shenanigans, and not an actual story. So far, this gives me Lagoon Lodge vibes, but with... weird racism shit instead of weird pedophilia and dick shaming shit ?

This VN, man "Your panic attack was conquered by the power of sexy" ....That's- not how panic attacks work or feel like I- what's the tone supposed to be here 💀💀💀
I feel so upset about it. The one time I had a panic attack I felt like I was actually going to die. So my overall distress was making it worse and worse. But yea, a sexy man would def snap me out of it faster than you can say banana 🙃
you guys made this whole experience very enjoyable, even if the characters are written like absolute idiots
35:33 oh I don't remember this scene being that heavy on the sniffing lol
prob cuz I played before the rewrite
1:25:35 also in past builds he was a student
darn it they didn't make it to the Tom cg (so close)
Welp… I understand your pinned comment now 😅
That was unexpectedly difficult to watch… and not the same reason as you 😂
You definitely have a….. lot more critical thots when experiencing this than I did.
Ya know, I kept finding myself wanting to download this vn but something kept stopping me everytime. Thanks for... enduring Keith. You too, Toaster.
An 82 firebird is a cool as hell car to own as a college student. Lack of AC is an issue though.
I think you’ll enjoy the Tom route better. I think it’s better written. Just choose right when the decision appears
It's choose right and decide to sit next to Tom, to be more precise
this is without a doubt my favorite vn out there
Is it bad that i want to watch more of this
It is but it's not
It depends on how you view it if you like it because of the suffering the two experience while reading or you like it because of the comedic stuff
The thing with the bees though 😂🐝🤪
*shrug*
This is, by my count, the 19th furry VN we've covered.
“The genre has a low bar!” Isn’t really a defense when the criticism is “this is a pretty low quality bar.”
I released the video finally after several people claimed we were fair and the creator himself made a tweet requesting more honest feedback.
how did i not pick up on the weird writing in this game,
You should read Dawn Chorus. I think it's a cool visual novel and I'd like to hear your opinion about it!
I enjoy the vn so a bit of bias, but! I want to say the other route fits better and is less "horny boy".
If you're up to another shitpost VNs a place to call home is very anime-writting light-hearted humor
I'm not!
On my Motorola Android phone the autoplay is a little sliding switch at the top right just left of the cast to tv option
Do you think you'll try out Crescendo next? It's another furry visual novel.
NYAAAA...DECKS
Wow. I remember reading an early demo for this a few years ago. It wasn´t great then, but it seems like the project has since gone through some heavy rewriting and has gotten immensely worse in the process.
HeLL YEAH DUDES MY FAV SHITPOST VN LES GOOOOO!
Maybe get through some more of the story before going on long rants about tiny details. Some of your complaints are covered later in the game.
it's a let's try lol
Try playing Repeat and Tempation Balled VN
lmao 1:05:57
I think you were supposed to play toms rout first. I think Maccons rout is just fanservice.
how would anyone know that?
If we were supposed to play one route first the game should have presented it first without the option to play the other ahead of it.
FOUND UR OTHER CHANNEL FINALYY
I don't make it hard lol
@@KeithBallardA lol
I bet he's a dog.
Dick shaming?????
Seriously what the hell is this?
