- CNN’s Van Jones speaks with Tennessee’s Sumner County District Commissioner Matt Shoaf, who shared what was the turning point that made him want to get involved in politics. #CNN #News
These people believe that they must control the lives of others but don't want anyone to control theirs. They're not happy just practicing their own beliefs which they are free to do. There is no religious persrcution here except that which is directed at other religions by so-called Christians. As a person who believes there is a creator, the last thing I want is to live under the rule of people who believe they are doing God's bidding. There will be a lot of fire, brimstone and hypocrisy but none of the mercy and compassion. You can see that right now.
This reminds me of what it’s like being a conservative in California.
@@PabloTheThinkerGive it a rest. Always the victim huh pal?
These people are a part of the Trump cult to overthrow democracy
@@D.C89 I just said that’s what it feels like. Not saying I’m a victim.
"These People?" Wow! Talk abt Hypocrisy. There's BS & hypocrisy on BOTH sides of aisle. When do I hear anyone on Far-Left talking abt American Values or History unless it's negative? From where I sit, all the Left does is infringe on my Freedom of Speach & Right to bear arms & try to make Christmas offensive. Kids taught to hate their country & keep their mouths shut cuz of fear of backlash & ashamed of who they are. America Far Left has given us is a race to the bottom. Does this mean I want my country pushed into the open arms of the Far-Right? Of course NOT. The Constitution shldn't hv to be shredded & the country doesn't need Fundamental Change to ensure blessings of the Founders apply to all American Citizens. Yes, the Declaration, Bill of Rights & Constitution were penned in imperfect times. Do we live in perfect times now? In a healthy Democracy, pendulum swings & there's supposed to be room for different views & diversity (real diversity, not weaponized diversity). What we hv now is a Trump Presidency who ran nation into arms of Far-Left & a Biden Presidency running nation into arms of Far-Right. People looked at me like I had 2 heads when I'd say (in '16 & '20) "No matter who wins, We the People will lose." How long until chain breaks???? We need to wake up & get it together & return to civil discourse & listening to each other. We need to stop being so sensitive & offended & backward looking. We need to put wedge issues behind us & find middle ground. Our kids need real civic education, not indoctrination. We need to return to having a strong nation that our people believe in b4 it's too late. If we keep Not putting the American People 1st, it'll be too late quicker than we think.
He claims the government was overreaching during covid, but the policy he advocates is of course more invasive to every household and more overreaching. Hypocrite.
That's conservatives in a nutshell. They are ok with government overreach as long as it is them doing it.
💯
Don't these morons realize that after the vaccine came out people stopped dying from Covid and if they did get sick they would be asymptomatic or their symptoms would be very mild? A lot of anti-vaccine people died like Caleb Wallace, Herman Cain, Dr. Jimmy Deyoung sr, Tod Tucker, or Dusty and Tristan Graham known as the "Alabama Pickers," and countless others.
What policy dud he advocate? None...
@@WKGWOMANINTNDud?? He didn't have to, we know where he stands for. If you don't know that by now, you are truly a lost cause.
Personal liberty they say and now they want to make laws that strip personal liberties.
They seem like great people until they hold a power and you see their real face who they actually are
Exactly.
I agree why they might start a couple of wars and attempt to ban gas powered vehicles and open up the border and let terrorists in and get soldiers killed by bungling an exit from Afghanistan .....Oh but wait??!!!🤨🤨🤨🤔🤔🤔
“The biggest threat to America today is not communism, it’s moving America toward a fascist theocracy, and everything that’s happened during the Reagan administration is steering us right down that pipe.”

@@user-uq4gs5nx5wyeah you are.
To me, feels like a very Van Jones conversation - looking beyond the politics to the person.
Personally, wouldn't have minded seeing some pushback/discourse on his vaccine stance, but, again, we see when we make an effort to understand each other instead of fight, we find ourselves finding more common ground than we expect.
Should’ve asked this man if he or any of his family had ever had polio, smallpox, or any of the other formerly common diseases that were eradicated by MANDATORY IMMUNIZATION. Hypochristians
There isn’t really much room to push back against the claim that the government shouldn’t be the absolute authority over individual medical choices. My body my choice.
@@TeitySprinkTTV I understand that point, but its also the governments responsibility to make the decisions to best protect its citizens. Something the citizens should also take part in. Ultimately looking at the science and historical evidence that vaccines do work and have a statistically negligent chance of adversely affecting one's health, a person's somewhat whimsical belief to not take a vaccine is in my eyes morally wrong if it leads to the protecting those that cannot take a vaccine due to medical reasons and the general wellbeing of the citizens around them.
@@TeitySprinkTTV That was the same argument that some motorcyclists had about helmet mandates, but if in an accident - and one made worse by not wearing a helmet - they insisted on getting lots of medical care. Sad to see so many anti-vaxxers have a similar attitude - don't vaccinate me, but when they can't breathe properly demand medical attention. Almost a million and a half Americans died of Covid, nearly all unvaccinated (either in 2020 or through refusal to be immunized).
@@TeitySprinkTTV Not when it comes to infectious diseases it's not. Your 'choice' then starts to have consequences for other people.
Children are required to be vaccinated to go to school. Why ? So they don't end up dead or crippled.

Christian Taliban right here, hard at work!
Christians don't blow up hospitals and force women to wear face coverings. Your comment makes no sense.
Trying to save lives after a bumbled response to a health emergency is not overreach. How many people on their deathbed expressing regret do they have to hear before they grow some empathy?
I have a trucking company and I am “forced” to choose every 6 months to pay insurance on my trucks that includes uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance or pull my trucks off the road. Insurance just went up and when I called to ask about this my carrier told me that the insurance lobbyists presented a request to raise SC’s rates and our legislators approved it. So is that fascism? SC is ruby red. Should I organize a group to take out the current legislation by saying that this is government overreach? A serious question.
It would help if there was better regulation of insurance (auto / trucks, house, health!) to reduce profiteering, but that would require dealing with corruption in the legislative process.
@@markrobinowitz8473I don't think that was the point.
Good take. It's fine to disagree and argue your case in public. The problem are the loonies that spot a bonfire and see it as an excuse to pore gasoline on it, because that's the only way they feel someone will see the fire.
I agree. There are a lot of "victims" of disinformation - including this guy, I think. The real criminals are those who know the truth and peddle lies anyway because it benefits them. Empathy and free speech are important Van, but once someone wants power and influence (like this guy running for office), we need to start asking some tougher questions...

Christo-fascism crawls out from under its rock.
Thanks to 45. Thanks to Reagan.
I don't think Trump and Reagan are "responsible" for the existence of these "Christian" fascists: they just realized they could exploit people's religious sensibilities/fears for political power.
If people are unwilling to sacrifice for your neighbors, then the government must step in and protect the lives of those same people you are unwilling to protect.
Ideally, the government would've preferred not to get involved.
Lol, welfare recipient government won't save us anything.
Sacrifice for my neighbors? Like I owe them something? No. I respect their property and rights. They are expected to do likewise. They are not my responsibility and I am not theirs.
@@StodgyAyatollah same concept as speeding. The consequences are not just for you - but for the drivers around you. If you didn't increase the risk of killing someone by speeding, we might not have a law against it. If you put others in danger, there will be consequences.
How is not being vaccinated respecting their rights? How is not wearing a mask to try to help stop the spread of a virus respecting their rights? Back in the day, when America was great, people lined up to get the Polio vaccine. It wasn’t perfect at first and not 100% perfect now, but it was basically eradicated. Measles too. For the good of our society, our neighbors, it’s least we can do. Brave men and women join the military to protect our country putting their lives at risk. Anyway, that’s was my thinking when I got vaccinated. Pretty pitiful that I was deemed a “lib”, “woke”, “demorat”, “p**ssy”, when it’s actually more brave to do something that may harm you or make you look silly to try to help the greater good.
@@StevenWCox Not endangering others by abstaining from reckless acts is respecting their rights and property, which includes their physical body. I wouldn't consider not being able to do whatever you want whenever you want a sacrifice. There is a much different implication to the word.
There's a huge difference between the Tennessee 3 and that man Van interviewed. Don't let a nice tone fool you.
Right, he sounds so humble and sincere. I would want to know his affiliation with the christian nationalist movement, which is an anti-constitution, anti-democracy, anti-American, white supremacist movement.
Imagine what's said behind them church doors in the basement? OR at a church member's house in private? I'm betting the tone is more fire and brimstone old testament vibe! You can see it in the guy's face!
I totally agree. Van dude, this is not good. It’s a disgrace fir u to even try to compare them
Hyperbole comes across as more ridiculous when you make shit up and try and pretend what you and others believe this guy's really saying. Frankly, you don't know shit what this man is saying or preaching in his basement or in private and he even admitted to Van, he almost didnt agree to be interviewed because he wasnt sure CNN would depict him in a fair, non-hysterical light that wouldn't fit the "crazy, Christian nationalist" narrative you're trying so want so desperately to be seen.
You don't know what this man believes or doesn't and not much then that.
@@davidroberts7282 Im from a Southern old testament/fire and brimstone congregation. I can tell you what my "Nationalist pastor" used to say in private settings (blacks enslaved were ordained by God himself, from Noah and his sons sins on the Ark, OR here's a good one GOD will wash away all the filth of makind and his chosen people will assert his new kingdom) And you going to sit here and not believe this pastor doesn;t believe that "filth" is not the Dems (LGBTQ, Trans,) and Liberal friendly party??? Come on, you're smart you know what we are really talking about!!
this is how it starts though...two people who believe different things coming together and talking to each other and treating each other decently and having an honest conversation. the way back isn't paved with huge events, it's paved with small conversations between people where they can be honest and say, "well maybe I don't agree with everything you believe, but you aren't the enemy we're made to believe you are." And that's on both sides. We have to see each other as people again instead of just adversaries...or worse. Thanks Van, this was great for so many reasons.
This isn't going anywhere. This man will say my body my choice all day but the moment it comes to vote against abortion rights or lgbtq rights then there's a greater picture.
Shouldn't be shoving any religion down anyone's throats 🤐 that's not how you govern 💀
I would also argue that it's not how you live out your Christian faith. There have been a lot of black eyes on Christianity in the past decade, and it makes me sad to see my religion abused for political gain. It should simply be about loving God and loving others. I do not often see the second part and the first has become love idols, whatever that may be for the different people.
That is their plan to govern on steriods. If you haven't already, look into the NAR movement and their 7 mountain mandate. These are dangerous people who will do ANYTHING for total power.
"Since taking control, that majority has halted plans for a new building, rejected federal grants and tried to give away a historical property, actions it said were in line with its commitment to fiscal responsibility, protecting property owners and managing growth. The group also has been involved in an escalating feud with the county’s election commission in ways that have prompted concerns about whether preparations for the 2024 presidential electin [sic] will be affected." - US News May 21 2023
Well....that doesn't sound very much like people who don't like government overreach. It sounds like they are in favor of overreach as long as it is reaching in the right direction. No challenge on any of this during the interview?
Did Van ask if Matt Shoaf or anyone in his family tested positive for COVID? Were they hospitalized? Did they pass it on to others?
Vaccines are not seat belts. Vaccines aren't just for you, they are for other people. And I want anti-vaxxers to be held to account on this: Make them say, "My beliefs are more important than public health and safety."
Mission Failed, Van Jones.
That’s because the political establishment of Sumner County lined up that hit piece of lies by liberal media. They aren’t happy when The People show up and take any of their power away. The disinformation game is strong with them.
Keep going Van. Don’t let the haters stop you. Thank you. 💫💫🇺🇸
You mean he should keep engaging in the false equivalency game. There are situations where right and wrong are matters of fact and not opinion and people in the media need to be responsible enough to point those situations out. Can you justify what is happening in Tennessee?
It's fascinating to hear about conversations that bridge political divides! Engaging with different perspectives can lead to unexpected insights and understanding. It's a great reminder of the value in listening to and learning from one another, regardless of our own beliefs. Here's to more dialogues that foster mutual respect and progress!
"Beliefs" are typically recognized as issues lacking evidence (is there a God? life after death? best way to structure our education system?) On the other hand, this was an extremely clear and obvious situation - a global pandemic. What we needed was clear and decisive action, not 4 years of perspectives, respect, nuanced discussion, empathy, etc. Hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved.
Public health isnt overreach. Its … public health. Thats why we force people to not poison water supplies, litter in places, and yet get vaccines.
What's Van talking about? The Tennessee 3 is trying to get already established values to be applied equally to everyone. This guy seems to want to impose HIS values on everyone. That seem to be quite a difference.
A vaccine mandate could be considered authoritarian but not facism
But taking away people's job/livelihood for non taking a jab is crazy.
@@nilnil8411 Crazier then not letting children go to school? We already do that and no body seems to mind.
www.nashville.gov/departments/health/school-health/school-immunizations
@@nilnil8411 not crazy at all there have always been mandatory vaccinations to attend school or be in the military as well as many health related issues to hold certain jobs and most folks get why you don't want an airline pilot with high blood pressure or little Timmy being tyfoid mary in 3rd grade or mopping the halls of the geriatric wing without a covid vaccination or jab as you call it
For some reason the last one turned into a political football because I guess science education is lacking and propaganda works
However it isn't even authoritarian in that there was a choice be vaccinated and keep your job or don't and find one where you don't need it
Mandates Are definitely Fascist.
They don't care about the meaning of words. They just use them because they sound scary.
"I was all prepared to have a big conflict" 😂😂😂 yea right van.
LOVE Van Jones!
He does not understand that there is a big difference between an overreach and a move toward safety and protection of citizens. Like seat belts.
In many cities and states, while its highly recommendable for public safety, and for individual safety, wearing a seat belt is a must, its not against the law, nor will you lose your job, be coerced or lectured on public morality if some drivers don't wear their seat belts in their vehicles. And you won't be pulled over by the authorities or publicly shamed.
Did he go to Aldi and see the shopping carts?
No they make millions for doing nothing yet trying to relate to “normal “ people
I hope he brought his rubles for the carts
is a longer version of this available?
It is refreshing to see two people have an actual, civil face to face conversation as opposed to exchanging jabs in a comment section. “It is hard to hate someone up close.”
Van I really respect you, but you should have pushed back on his vaccine stance because you are not helping him, you are basically saying what he believes in is ok, and endangering others lives is not.
This needed to be much longer and delve more in to all current day subjects, abortion, the boarder, ect. But yeah, on it's surface, both sides seemed to have level heads on what was discussed as most sane people have more in common with each other more often than not. The vaccine issue I get, but the US has always had things in place for the greater good, Measles are making a return because all of a sudden, vaccines aren't good? Military has mandates, public schools have mandates, why was Covid the issue?
Listen, if you home school, and never vaccinated your kids and as an adult you never got vaccinated in your life(highly doubtful, but OK), why the fight that you never had before? It all just seems like a bunch of people listening to bad faith operators and claiming "freedom" to not do something you have always done. So yeah, I would have delved deeper on that subject as well as others, but a good first step.
I never for a moment, living in Washington state, thought I was required to get a covid vaccine.
I've been looking into Norwegian black metal lately.
You know what some of these bands use for kindling?
Churches.
This reminds me of what it’s like being a conservative in California.
Van you sold bro you didn’t press him on nothing meaningful bro
Public safety is not government overreach.
Not if its badly mismanaged, horribly arranged, not told or explained honestly, or done in a coercive/forced manner. Plus, the MSM message wasnt very honest or clear about just how dangerous and deadly Covid could really be, and that it affected people of all ages horribly, not just the very young and elderly. Covid-19 was such a rare, new supervirus, some CDC experts falsely put put the notion that with just two shots and a booster, you won't ever get Covid again, when in reality, even if you're fully vaccinated, you can still get it and be a little sick, but more then likely, you will live.
sending love to everyone...
Great reporting!
Van Jones needs to have several seats.
Many don't know the definition of the "terms" they are using. Such as Fascism. You said "Individual" Freedom yet a Women's Right to choose doesn't count.
There's no such thing as a federal "right to choose".
Do you not know what the term 'rights" are defined as?
Can you name one other right that lets you take away someone else's right to life?
Do more of these please and longer. Necessary conversations
Conversations about politics whist sitting in a pew. NO. NEVER.
Thanks Van for taking the time to do real research and not one-siding it! Hannity and company could learn something about “real journalism”
Does that also apply to MSNBC?
People are generally reasonable, but when push comes to shove, their true morality comes out.
When I see these snowflakes losing their minds in the comments, I know that it’s truth too it, every time people get close to telling the truth they freak out.

Moderates are not Republican.
More complicated or more complex; relatively speaking? More healthy definitely.
I don’t understand why Van Jones really thought that his guest’s core would be very different than his. Most people want the same thing: a government that represents their interests. Our political leaders have steered our eyes away from that, enabling the belief that “those guys” are out to get us and take away our ways of life. It’s a big game of smoke and mirrors, and people on both sides fall for it.
WTH is Van trying to bridge here? Just lost.
Where were the tough questions Van? A great guy? Look this guy up and see some of the things he advocates! SMH
