But the last forty-eight hours have seen hundreds of arrests, with the Los Angeles Police Department clearing an encampment at UCLA - hot on the heels of the mass arrests at Columbia University in New York.

What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks _and_ think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either/or in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.

Trespassing is not peaceful. In this country (the US), you secure a permit and hold your protest or march in a public space, not on private property. You cannot simply pitch your tent in a neighbor's yard and claim 'First Amendment.' If you came home to find people 'occupying' your living room, I don't think you'd find it 'peaceful' just because they weren't actively kicking the dog.

A lot of your Brits don't seem to understand the US 1st Amendment which protects freedom of speech and right of the people peaceably to assemble. How it works is there is a difference between speech and *behavior* . Speech is saying and writing what you believe. *Behavior* is how you express those beliefs. Speech is protected, peaceful assembly is protected, *illegal behavior* is not. Demonstrating is *behavior* , it's a way to express your beliefs. As long as your *behavior* in expressing your beliefs doesn't contravene the law you are protected by the 1st Amendment. If your *behavior* breaks the law while expressing your beliefs your *behavior* is not covered or protected by the 1st Amendment.

The only campus which I honestly really care about is UCLA ... and the protestors there badly defaced one of the iconic buildings on campus, Royce Hall, in addition to their blocking the way of students to be able to get to class, including a Jewish student whose video of the incident went viral. On Sunday night, April 28th, they attacked an Israeli Jewish girl, who's a student at a nearby community college, and knocked her unconscious. Her mother was with her carrying the Israeli flag on campus and the flag was knocked to the ground, and the girl went down to pick it up and was kicked in the head. Her mother thought she lost her. Subsequently, two nights later on Tuesday, April 30th at around 10:30pm, some pro-Israelis (PIs) came to campus, a couple hundred strong, and tore away at the wall the Pro-Palis (PPs) had built surrounding their encampment. There were a couple PPs who were hurt, and the PIs called it vengeance for Sunday night. An eye-for-an-eye is unfortunate, but one which pervades Middle Eastern thought. To compound the problem, the LA Times and the PPs have completely ignored this side of the story and said the PIs had provoked all the violence.

I wasn't aware that the protesters were destroying property. But, it also seems to me that the violence is a product of the police. From my observation the protest were peaceful until the police started their arrest to stop the peaceful protest. I think most people viewed that.
