I started shaving with a safety razor and I'm happy . No more expensive 3 bladed disposable razors. The blades are so cheap for safety razor. I bought 100 on amazon . Your video is very informative and helped me. More men should go to the safety razor or expensive disposable blades
Interesting video GeoFB. I got sick and tired of those expensive and gimmicky plastic razors about ten years ago and purchased a Merkur 34C HD razor and settled on the Gillette Silver Blue blades for my best BBS shave! Now I look forward to shaving as well as experimenting with different shave creams and soaps. Love all your great shaving videos. Thank you!
Less (absolutely no) razor burn! I switched from a cartridge type to a safety razor with good quality blades. (Feather) after getting the pressure right (you can easily slice yourself using the feathers) he's right they're stupidly sharp. Used to get a whole ton of razor burn with a Gillette mach 3. I normally only shave twice a week and I've got a year's worth of blades for $20. The process is really enjoyable and the shave is the best I've ever had. Plus there's no or extremely little plastic used in the process! Another win.

I really appreciate your video. The pros against modern shavers besides the price and especially how to dispose of used blades in a safe way. I got myself a cheap Wilkinson Classic DE Shaver and am more satisfied than my Gillette Fusion shaver.
Wonderful video, I really appreciate you and your channel. I’m 37, I’ve been double edge shaving since 2014, with the Merkur 34c. I soon bought a Shavette that takes single edge blades, a Dovo Bismarck straight razor and an expensive strop. Last week I purchased the Merkur Futur in Chrome. It’s been an amazing journey, and feel ashamed of my Mach 3 and Fusion days 🤦🏽♂️ Lol. Once again, great video, much love from Cambridge UK.
I'm calling BS on the, "Less pulling and tugging on your wallet." My wallet is a lot lighter after 11 different razors, 40+ soaps, and 10 different brushes lol.
Dan Lutter Lol! I catch your drift! If you can restrain yourself, you can save money with a safety razor! It's much more fun trying all different razors, blades, soaps, and creams. though!
+Dan Lutter Amen to that, it will take me 30 years to recoup what I have been spending. I must admit, I love every minute of it and I especially love going to my mailbox and seeing what package has arrived almost daily. Plus, the wet shaving community is filled with great people, truly a great bunch of gentleman.
+Dan Lutter Well, I figure it is about $240 for a year of cartridge razors. $8-$20 for a year of DE razors. So I can spend about $220 ish a year on my RAD before I call it a problem. Plus that doesn't cover the money saved on soap vs goo. ;)
You can still save money with one good razor, the right blade, and inexpensive, but good, soaps and creams. I understand the desire to try new products also, but there are so many good ones, reasonably priced.
Great video, very informative. I have pulled between 4-6 weeks on 1 Gillette blade. Everyday use. I Use cocounut oil for my skin, instead of shaving cream, and I clean and dry the blade right after use. Also, I am keeping my dull blades so I can learn the art of stropping. Really make the most mileage out of them.
@@geofatboy if I owned a razor blade manufacturing company, I would be against stropping or sharpening our blades as well. Why would i want my customers prolonging the product, when I can sell more?
@@CatLady999 that's stupidity on your part. One stich will cost hundreds of blades. Don't try stropping them they aren't high quality steel like a straight razor. If you want to get a straight razor that's another thing in itself and probably the route you should go.
geofatboy. I have been watching you for two years my friend. I started shaving with safety razor in that time. I want to thank you, and learned allot from you.. Soon I'll be ordering Feather product from you.. Keep up great work..
I have memories shaving with such razors when as a kid i first started shaving. they were by no means pleasant. maybe i was doing something wrong? but with how expensive modern blade systems are, i might dig out that vintage razor from our of the shed and give it a try.
What's your pre-shave routine? Do you ever use a hot towel before you shave? What are the advantages with using a hot towel before you shave? THIS WAS A GREAT VIDEO.
John Umek Check out some of my other shaving videos. I'm a big fan of a hot shower, and a hot towel! A warm beard cuts much easier. Thanks for the kind words on the video.
Hi from across the pond. I have used twin edge razors for over half a century and wouldn't have it any other way. The newer plastic dispensers take used blades in the bottom. One suggestion is to ask your doctor's surgery to dispose of your old blades in a dedicated sharps waste container for proper disposal. I personally would like to see this service offered by local pharmacies to their customers, perhaps one day?.
Great tip with converting a used soup tin into a razor disposal can. A safe and economical way to do it. Beats spending £5 on Amazon for one and will also hold more blades! Nice!
My grandfather used to put his in the slot in the back of his medicine cabinet. Cabinets came with the slot. I've have two safety razors for 30 years. It is very true that the care of the blade determines the life of the blade. He also had a way to clean and sharpen the blades to extend their life.
Great video! I really learned a lot regarding my newest obsession. Couple of questions: 1) Why shouldn't you wipe down the blade? (6:08) 2) Why fold the blade in half when disposing? (7:58)
Just guessing here, but: 1) Cause you can possibly dull or dent the edge of the blade, which will cause nicks during your next shave. 2) Less surface area = less possibility of someone cutting themselves when pushing down on the garbage bag.
@@itachi1742 Ah - makes sense. Thanks for the reply! I was also wondering for the first item (not wiping the blade): maybe that could also wear away any coating the manufacturer applied?

Safety razors are the best for really coars hair. I get 3-4 shaves with my safety razor, where disposables, I use to use 2 razors per shave, razor would be completely dull by the time I started shaving the other side.
I’m in my 30’s so I remember using the old disposable razors that had zero swivel. After a decade or more of using cartridges $$$$/Red ingrown neck hairs I went to Safety razor- in an instant my irritation was gone. My muscle-memory of using those non-swivel disposables came right back and I knew how to shave at the correct angle- the #1 MOST difficult thing & only (haven’t cut myself yet & I’m hairy) is finding the best blade!!!! This took me forever and is why I kept giving up in the years I’ve owned a safety. The dull crappy blades are ubiquitous - they’re at every drugstore/grocer - go with online quality blades. Feathers are amazing.
LOL - You are funny as hell. Thanks for taking your time making videos for beginners, and other vids as well. Just had my first wetshave with my new Merkur c34, Merkur blade and Prorasso soap. Im Hooked. Liked and Subbed.
I was looking for a cheaper and better solution for shaving. Gilette catriges i used was very good but lasted around a month. I swithed to those good old fashioned blades and i was really impressed. Shaving becomes fun hearing the cutting. One blade last me two months. I had some cuts in the begining trying to find the best way to shave with those razors. My conclusion: in certain cases try to use old fashioned solutions. They might work better than high tech b.s.
If you hand stop your blade you can get a lot of shave out of them. My grandfather told me he bought a sleeve in 1954 and was still using them up in 2001 before he passed.
I have just made the move from cartridge shaving to DE blades. This is a very useful video with some decent info i'm going to use from now on. Gonna get me a sample pack!!
What was in that can, dehydrated water? I had the pile o' spent blades in my wall when I remodeled my bath. I was considering cutting a slot in the back of my new medicine cabinet, but then remembered that I re-plumed with pex pipe. Probably not a huge danger, but it kind of seems like keeping the blades away from plastic tubing is good practice.
I purchased a leaf twig razor on Black Friday. It was on my doorstep within three days which was awesome and I ordered extra blades from Amazon. I ordered Parker man are they sharp! At least they feel sharper than the leaf sample blades that they give you with the razor. I cleaned two blades so far with my sonic cleaner that uses water to clean things with a sonic piece that goes in the water and it plugs into the wall. It seems to rejuvenate the blades which I think are totally reusable, but they’re so cheap. I think I’ll keep them and try bulk cleaning them Once a year and reuse some of the blades. It’s so nice not having to purchase the Harry’s brand replaceable heads all the time! I should’ve done this a long time ago! I came close to buying a safety razor years ago and was out a mistake not buying it. I was scared that it was going to cut me. Luckily, I haven’t cut myself not even once yet. I rubbed my face down with an alum solid stone bar after each shave. Then I finish with a super cheap Bay rum aftershave. Or I use the leftover Harry’s aftershave which I love that product. Going to start looking into other products right now I’m just using edge gel shaving foam. For years, I just used Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap. I might have to give that a whirl with the new razor, but it just seems like you should have some foam when you’re using a single edge. Thanks for the interesting video.
@@philipverity113 That's impressive, think about how many disposables you'd be buying every month, how much money and waste that means. Guess this is the right choice.
Nice overview, and some info I didn`t know about about the history of DE blades :) I also wrap my blades and break them, BUT, I dump my blades as well as other metal scrap in a small tin (tomato beans), so I can deliver the load to the same hardware store I deliver used batteries. I vape and make my own coils, so there is always a little bit of kanthal or stainless steel getting dumped in there, but three months of use and it`s about 1/3rd full, so I think it will be a yearly delivery to the hardware store hehe. Every little thing counts, right? ;)
I got one more excellent tip from you on disposing the razor blade. Wrap the old blade in the wrapper off the new one. I will still put them in a cigarette box. The only difference this time they will be wrapped in the paper
Hi, over here (the UK) the razor box has acompartment /slot in the rear for safe disposal of used blades, and when full, with the supplied but dull blades, dispose of in regular trash, no problems less risk.
Thanks for the video. Especially the listing of mild to sharp blades. I am going to be switching to a safety razor and I want to use a milder blade until I get the hang of it. Now I'm off to see if you have a comprehensive guide to soaps. I'm looking for one that is unscented or close to it, is good for my skin, and will lather up fairly easily in a bowl with a badger brush. Cheers.
I'm glad that I went back to DE shaving. A box of a hundred blades costs about $11 and the new cartridges cost $25 for 5. It didn't take me long to decide which way to go.
I learned to shave with a double edge safty razor dad was issued when he was in the military before he shipped off to the war after about a yr i learned to use a straight razor and still use the same ones to this day on the rare occasion i have to shave
I love how these shavers dont get clogged up with hair the way those multi blade shavers do. I would often toss them because they would become clogged and worthless. It used to be that steel bodied medicine chests had slots in the sides of them for you to dispose of the blades of safety razors. When I was a plumbers apprentice (a few decades ago) we removed and replaced a lot of these medicine chests only to have hundreds of rusty razor blades come tumbling out of the space between the chest and the studs.
I have used mostly Feather blades, occasionally Derby. They have always had a slot on the back of the plastic pack. To dispose of blades, I just slide my used blades into the slot and throw the pack away when all of the blades from that case have been used.
9:00 - If cutting a slot into a steel can to make a blade disposal container, what happened to the original contents of the can? Did you buy a can full of air?
i just recently switched to double edged razors from using multi blade cartridges ever since i started shaving, and it is so much better don’t think i’ll ever buy another multi blade disposable razor

I remember when I was a kid we lived in a house that was built in the early 1920's and in the bathroom over the sink it had a little slot where you could throw away your old double edge razor blades.
Ahhhh, the good old days!
Wait seriously?
There are a lot of WINS in that paragraph!
congrats man! The most original, complete and brilliant DE video tutorial no YT. Thanks a lot
Try the Wilson Combat Blades !!!
Good morning Geo.! I tend to recycle cans at home so when im done with a D.E razor blade I put in the mouth of s can crush it and recycle it with the can.! That way I think no one will get hurt. Trust me ive cut myself badly but I love my wet shaving!! Getting my friends into it , got my son my daughter and my lady aboard!! Good day! Great shave!!
frankie arrieta
That's a surefire, safe disposal method Frankie.
Getting everyone else into wet shaving, share the love!
@@geofatboy Or, would it will make the can non-recyclable or even cause injury to someone working with the recycling equipment because of the very different material composition?
With your industry connections, can you provide any more safety info about blade disposal and whether they are recyclable?
just got one of these. excited to use it
Which one, and how'd it go?
the vikings blade by julian vue. so far so good!
I got the MANSCAPED safety razor. I like it. Also got a lather bowl and brush.
I really appreciate your video. The pros against modern shavers besides the price and especially how to dispose of used blades in a safe way. I got myself a cheap Wilkinson Classic DE Shaver and am more satisfied than my Gillette Fusion shaver.
Thanks! I’m done with cartridge razors.
Sharks seem to be too dull for me so I bought Feathers- hope they’re better!
Feathers will definitely be sharper!
Yes they are Tom.
this is one of my favourite videos on the internet
Dan Lutter
Lol!
Tony Marinelli I feel the same way.
Thanks man for the info . I’m going to change it up and go from cartridges to safety blades
Edmond-Get ready for your best shave ever!
A lot of old school medicine cabinets actually have a slot for razor disposal. Never thought of making one myself, that’s a great idea 👍🏼
Double double edge blade manufacturers don't recommend wiping or stropping razor blades.
+Joshua Plummer
Thanks Joshua!
This was a great video full of info! I love the part about the disposal in the wall void!!
Thanks!
I have memories shaving with such razors when as a kid i first started shaving. they were by no means pleasant. maybe i was doing something wrong? but with how expensive modern blade systems are, i might dig out that vintage razor from our of the shed and give it a try.
Have been DE shaving since 2014 and love it. I have used many of he blade shown in this video with great success.
absolutely loved the extra time you spent demonstrating the gangsta blade disposal! free, yet priceless!
What's your pre-shave routine? Do you ever use a hot towel before you shave? What are the advantages with using a hot towel before you shave? THIS WAS A GREAT VIDEO.
John Umek
Check out some of my other shaving videos.
9:42, I thought he was gonna shave with that!
Great tip with converting a used soup tin into a razor disposal can. A safe and economical way to do it. Beats spending £5 on Amazon for one and will also hold more blades! Nice!
Thanks Al!
How do you get an empty tin with two ends?
My grandfather used to put his in the slot in the back of his medicine cabinet. Cabinets came with the slot. I've have two safety razors for 30 years. It is very true that the care of the blade determines the life of the blade. He also had a way to clean and sharpen the blades to extend their life.
Great video! I really learned a lot regarding my newest obsession. Couple of questions:
1) Why shouldn't you wipe down the blade? (6:08)
2) Why fold the blade in half when disposing? (7:58)
Just guessing here, but:
1) Cause you can possibly dull or dent the edge of the blade, which will cause nicks during your next shave.
Hey geo Awesome video just placed my order and asked for blades for beginners. Got my order and you said you would have video up soon 10 minutes later I checked and here it is! Perfect timing thanks again! Love the videos will be placing another order soon!
If anyone's looking to buy any products shave nation is the place to go great customer service !

Thanks Casey,
I remember writing that note! I was hoping the video would be up when you got your shave goods. It worked out great!.
Safety razors are the best for really coars hair. I get 3-4 shaves with my safety razor, where disposables, I use to use 2 razors per shave, razor would be completely dull by the time I started shaving the other side.
This is the best video I have ever seen
Woh! Those are tough shoes to fill, so thanks!
I like the way you went with this and teaching
Thanks Norman!
Great comment Tom! This will get reposted elsewhere!
Thank you for this video, much appreciated!
Thanks Philly!
Very thorough and interesting! Thanks for the great video!
I started putting my old blades into a Budweiser tin 21 years ago.
It’s still not full.
They do last a lot, huh?
Daniel Mata Rodríguez
I get a month or two out of one blade generally.
I must be clean shaven for my occupation.
@@philipverity113 That's impressive, think about how many disposables you'd be buying every month, how much money and waste that means. Guess this is the right choice.
Nice overview, and some info I didn`t know about about the history of DE blades :)
I also wrap my blades and break them, BUT, I dump my blades as well as other metal scrap in a small tin (tomato beans), so I can deliver the load to the same hardware store I deliver used batteries.
I vape and make my own coils, so there is always a little bit of kanthal or stainless steel getting dumped in there, but three months of use and it`s about 1/3rd full, so I think it will be a yearly delivery to the hardware store hehe.
Every little thing counts, right? ;)
Thanks a lot. Very informative and useful
I got one more excellent tip from you on disposing the razor blade. Wrap the old blade in the wrapper off the new one. I will still put them in a cigarette box. The only difference this time they will be wrapped in the paper
Double Safety!
Thanks for the tips. Im new to DE razors and especially learned how to dispose of them
Best thing I ever did going to double edge shaving a lot more pleasurable experience shaving is no longer a chore now it's an event.
Love it!❤️
I had a Merkur that had a normal side and a dull side.
Made interesting stripes of razor bumps.
Not something you encounter every day!
Hi, over here (the UK) the razor box has acompartment /slot in the rear for safe disposal of used blades, and when full, with the supplied but dull blades, dispose of in regular trash, no problems less risk.
Thanks for your comment, I think I showed that in the video too :)
Hey ! Thanks for this video. It’s very helpful in how to pick. I will take that advise. Sample pack. Good 💡 idea.
Thanks Albert!
Decent video always find your stuff informative.
Really informative, also derby is in my experience the best
So, should beginners start with mild razors first when trying to find the right razor?
Awesome video and thank you...... BUT did you just cut a tin with a ceramic blade?
Thanks for the video. Especially the listing of mild to sharp blades. I am going to be switching to a safety razor and I want to use a milder blade until I get the hang of it. Now I'm off to see if you have a comprehensive guide to soaps. I'm looking for one that is unscented or close to it, is good for my skin, and will lather up fairly easily in a bowl with a badger brush. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm glad that I went back to DE shaving. A box of a hundred blades costs about $11 and the new cartridges cost $25 for 5. It didn't take me long to decide which way to go.
I used an old prescription bottle to store my old blades in. Just cut a slot in the lid and drop the old blade in when it's time for a new one.
Wow, really in depth video. Tons of information, thank you
I learned to shave with a double edge safty razor dad was issued when he was in the military before he shipped off to the war after about a yr i learned to use a straight razor and still use the same ones to this day on the rare occasion i have to shave
I clean the blades mid shave for better results on wet skin. Blades can be sharpened for longer use.
Wait-You actually remove the blade during your shave, clean it and then reinsert it into the razor?
great to find that the feather blades are sharper than most , also when i saw the tin can i thought andy warhol art .
No clogging! One of the MANY advantages of safety razor shaving!
Did you buy a can full of air?
drilled a small hole and drained it out
i just recently switched to double edged razors from using multi blade cartridges ever since i started shaving, and it is so much better don’t think i’ll ever buy another multi blade disposable razor
great video geofatboy
Thank you-This one was more like an epic!
Awesome video with lots of useful information!! Thanks a lot man and greetings from Italy!!
