- Hearing is used by the brain for spatial orientation, posture, and movement. Hearing is closely tied in to neck and torso function through the vestibular orientation system. Thus, if something is amiss with hearing or speech, it can directly influence the tonicity of your anti-gravity postural muscles.

My man Neal never misses with great topics that hardly anyone else talks about 👌🏼
Thank you. I do my best 😀
Sincerely true. Very rare topics are covered by Neil.
No else knows the truth. Don't water this important thing down to some content.
Amazing. God created this amazing machine in us.
Neal! So grateful for your videos! This was the final piece that was preventing my PRI program from progressing. I struggle to even put into words how profound the change has been, and dramatic when I put in the left ear plug (using an earplug rated for shooting range). My right ear felt like I was in a wind tunnel, and it perked up to try to listen better, and suddenly my inability to move my right ear compared to my left over the past two years of airway dentistry finally made sense. Every single person who sees me over the past week (including doctors) says that I look radically different. I finally overcame my seemingly incurable leftward jaw deviation with this technique! It was necessary to combine every single PRI technique I know, especially left periphery vision (at the 9oclock and 11oclock positions of the left periphery, in particular), left heel sense, pelvic position relative to ribcage, left big toe at last stage of gait, left stance/right swing), anterior glute medius, left hamstring, and OPENING MY LEFT EYELID, which seemed to come autonomically with plugging the left ear. All this together finally CONQUERED my cranial torsion (Right TMCC) and truly no words can ever articulate the freedom and healing I am experiencing. Up until now, I was unable to fully activate my left lateral pterygoid due to the orientation of the torsion preventing it. I would try and try and try, but I couldn't isolate the left pterygoid, UNTIL I plugged my left ear, and combined that with left periphery vision while walking and breathing to music. Can you please tell me what that singing device is called? Thank you!
Wow. You really do know your PRI! Nice job! They are called “Hearfones” and can be found online. I think some people may start to use their left ear for “orientation” when they become ungrounded. When I’m ungrounded on the left, I was tightening up when hearing male and female voices at the same time (high frequencies vs low frequencies). It’s like my brain was getting confused. But if I put my orthotics back on, or plugged my left ear, I could touch my toes again. I’ve been taking extensive notes and will make a video about my experiences. It may be that you need to plug your left ear very temporarily to “re-ground” but you wouldn’t want to do it constantly.
Hello, so happy for you. Can you PLEASE just quickly summarize exactly what you’re doing? I suffer from every single thing you’ve mentioned, for about the past 14y. In the last 8 or so months, my left ear has become so ‘clogged’ and I hear so muffled now. I am so miserable. Pelvic tilt, right leg is EXHAUSTED, diaphragm won’t expand, low on oxygen and chronically tired 24/7. Jaw uneven and contorted along with cranium, left neck muscles giant and flexed. Etc etc etc etc etc.
Life changing information! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this channel Neal. 💖
My pleasure. Thank you for the comment.
@@NealHallinan with the info you are providing and my newly realized energy healing skills, I am rocking my world.
This resonates with me because I'm ASD and ADHD. I have low heart rate, bp, body temp my whole life and vasovagal episodes.. I have aphantasia and can only HEAR my mental processes, not hold visual images or taste or smell.
Neal I have to respond to this fascinating vid No One re ENT or neurologist has Ever explained this to me im 75% deaf, total hearing loss in left ear through a failed stapedectomy 2003 and also exp a TBI in 2013,Invisible wounds that totally changed my life,Im No Quitter 🙏
Thanks for reminding us all 😂❤ The human body is Amazingly created !!!
You’re a life saver Neal, growing up with people who loved music that was was too loud caused some minor hearing loss in my right ear and I wonder if my brain compensated like everything else by utilizing my left ears neural pathways more. Or just my left ear functions better relatively? Not sure.
Anyways Just by rigging up my own version of the singer device you showed I was able to do the left adductor pull back pri exercise for the first time. It felt like when you gain correct proximal hamstring engagement instead of just middle hamstrings. Causing a chain reaction of relaxation and a visibly noticeable difference in my left hip hike.
I can’t thank you enough for literally dedicating your career to helping people like us. ❤
Oh, wow! Yes, proximal hamstring control on the left is what opens up the path to healing! The difficulty is figuring out why someone can’t access that proximal attachment.
Oh! You have a Brazilian flag there! Didn't expect that! Cool! Greetings from Brazil! Thanks so much for your work and videos, they're truly amazing! 🙏✨
I do! I've been to Brasil may times and Axe/pagode are some of my favorite music!
@@NealHallinan Wow! That's so interesting! I grew up listening loads of pagode, had some musicians in the family that were super into this genre. Although I personally don't enjoy it that much, I prefer axe and other genres more, but it was still a great experience having musicians around 😊! There's also a lot of great body work around here. Have you heard of Angel Vianna? She used to be a ballet dancer that broke a lot of paradigms in the dance field and developed a whole new approach, she called Body Consciouness. She created a contemporary dance graduation course. I almost finished it and that's one of the reasons why I felt drawn to your work and appreciate it so much!
By accident I realized my left eye has slightly worse vision than my right eye, covering my right eye helps a lot of tension go away. I imagine my brain is not using my left eye as effectively since it is slightly far sighted, and I use computer screens often probably straining to see properly all day. Well an optometrist confirmed this and I’m getting my prescription this week!
Now this video has me wondering about my hearing which I would have never considered a driver to left aic, just as I thought vision would not be a driver. I’ve always known I can’t hear as well in my right ear, not sure if this has to do with jaw and neck tension or something else. It makes sense that tension goes up as there is strain to get proper sensory input. This is groundbreaking for me.
Thank you Neal 🤝
not using one eye long isn't safe, the same as watching around in darkness for long
You're welcome. Your inner ear, and the two "hearing muscles" tensor tympani and stapes, are innervated by the trigeminal nerve (oral cavity/jaw muscles/teeth) and facial nerve, respectively. So your hearing is directly influenced by your jaw, teeth, tongue, etc... and how you use your voice and what you see....but all of that is influenced by the ground under your left heel that most people lose sense of (which is what the left AIC pattern truly is). Most issues begin with a loss of ground under the left heel. So your vision may be different when tested in standing vs sitting (the point of my last video)
I have been having various PRI treatments for the last 10 years or so, travelling all over the world to see people, but no one has come close to delivering the level of detail and understanding you seem to have. Please keep up this incredible work. I am still hoping you open up online consultations since we spoke many years back! I am curious also, I have been wearing ear plugs for sleeping on a night for the last 20+ years ( the slightest noise seems to stop me sleeping) could this also have a negative impact ? Thank you again
so shutting windows and door for night was a good decision in the end,
I traded inflow of fresh air for black room at night but now I discover it may have a double benefit
thanks for sharing this!
what kind of ear plugs works well for sleeping? how do you comfortably lay on a pillow with that ear? 🤔
I have an online calendar on my website, it just happens to fill up quickly.
Not sure about the earplugs at night. I'm a light sleeper and generally wake up quite often, although half a THC gummie works wonders for me.
Yeah I have to have everything shut, no sign of light, no noise etc and even then I am usually awake for hours before falling asleep, and wake up pretty consistently throughout the night, I am in my 30s and don't think I have ever had a good night sleep ( although it also means I have no reference to compare it to, I grew up thinking everyone slept like that ) I don't seem to be able to switch my mind off, it's real frustrating! Although I think my breathing is too restricted too which is probably the majoy disrupter lol. I have tried all sorts of ear plugs but the ones I use currently are the silicone ones, sleeping on your side isn't really effected by having ear plugs in, you won't notice them once you are used to them
@@szymonbaranowski8184
I will take a look thank you. Hmm I haven't tried that, might be worth a shot! I have real probablems 'switching off' on a night. I have always felt like being able to sleep even 10% better would drastically improve my life lol Any other tips? I seem to lay there being very aware of my slightly restricted breathing and neck / head position. I haven't found a dental device to bring the jaw forward and hold it without issues for sleeping in, if you know of anything or recommend anything similar@@NealHallinan
Praise God for PRI. The answer to countless prayers!!!
Learning sooo much from you!!
I so agree with you, most EEOC lawsuits are based in what we hear and what is being said that is scary and directed at harming the worker or employer financially, mentally and physically. Incredible amount of stressors. Good hearing is so crucial-thank you so much for the evidence based data to prove and defeat bad hearing.
your videos are pure GOLD
This is amazing. Recently I found out that my neck, throat, and vocal chords are normal, my ears too, however I cant speak. This is the only video that has really delved into these special types of speech problems. I also have more issues speaking German, not may native language, than I do speaking my native language.
Namaste and love from Bharat to you. Very deep topics are covered only by you on youtube.
Another fascinating video, Neal. This certainly rings true with me. If I try to touch my toes, I can't do it, but if I either close my right eye, or plug my right ear, I can touch my toes no problem.
closing the right eye or plugging the right ear is used in PRI to help "de-sense" the over-sensed right side so that you can find the ground under your left heel. So that is what is happening, you remove the right side sense to re-sense the left side. For lasting effect, you'd have to stabilize the left side of your body appropriately.
I have been binging your videos for the past month and I'm learning new things everyday! Thank you for your great work
You're quite welcome.
Been experimenting with trying to consciously walk differently. (Different Angle and placement of my feet) i feel a tremendous increase in energy, specially mental. I feel my breathing is different also. Will try to Get better shoes and modify them. Thank you!
WOW! You have really done your homework. Incredibly thorough. Really amazing! I've read about Tomatis in the past and have a friend that used some of his techniques years ago to help her son in school.
I covered my left ear and immediately could take a fuller breath compared to not covering my left ear. Anyway, you are doing tremendous work!
Interesting observation.
Placing an earbud or cotton in only right ear is the way to go for most. As directed by Dan Hoaglum. I've been doing it for two years with relief. It's entirely consistent with left leg back stance, right leg forward in gait cycle with head turned to the right, leaving left ear open to be activated and ready in that phase of gait. Plugging the left ear left ear promotes left molar contact and feeds into Left AIC RightTmcc patterning.
I'm good friends with Dan. Cotton in the right ear is used in specific situations. I'm not talking about that situation. Left molar contact does not feed the left AIC right TMCC pattern, it inhibits it.
I REALLY want to learn more about PRI; i am a very skeptical speech therapist and sometimes think drilling a kid to speak correctly is harmful since we really are just teaching compensations.
If the structures are aligned, speech will flow.
Great insight!
I know that the Tomatis Method (which I believe programs like The Listening Program are based off of), tries to change the "lead" ear to the right ear. And yes, if structures are aligned, speech flows....which is why the primary concern of PRI is to make sure an individual has 30 degrees of cervical lordosis, for vibrational freedom.
Thank you for another awesome upload! One of the biggest takeaways from your channel that I wish I would’ve discovered sooner is just how interconnected the human organism is. It’s very common for one stubborn source of malfunction to throw off countless other crucial components of the body. And once this occurs, it can be incredibly difficult to figure out what the root cause is through intuition alone(my jaw, in my case).
Luckily, once the root cause is improved upon, all of the components that were misbehaving as a result of the root cause can then be used to get you out of dysfunction more quickly. I’ve recently noticed just how terrible my hearing in my right ear is in comparison to my left, likely as a consequence of the right side of my cranium muscles being far too tight and constricting over the years. They’ve undoubtedly been exacerbating one another. I’m going to start performing my PRI exercises with my left ear plugged from now on! 🫡
You can certainly try that, but the problem would then be that you will be getting too much sensory input through your right side, which could shift you further to the right. Jaw dysfunction is complicated because jaw position is influenced by ground sense, vision, hearing, and occlusion.
@NealHallinan Mine is primarily a problem with occlusion. I’m debating between getting a stabilization splint or potentially going with Invisalign with a dentist that takes airways and the proper functionality of the jaw into account. I remember you mentioning the possibility of you getting expansion & braces in the future to fully address your jaw and bite. How do you feel about Invisalign?
This is really interesting! I’m hard of hearing, wear hearing aids and am left ear dominant. This explains some of my neck and back issues. And the slowness of my auditory. I’m not dumb the auditory process is slower for me. I always thought I was dumb or slower at processing what is said than others.
Nope, definitely not dumb. Left ear is just slower.
Just found your channel, it’s so very interesting. The human body is such an amazing creation. I have often thought about how emotion and thinking play in the body in strength and movement. Recently I had a project in my shop, it’s was one of those disaster jobs. Got to where I couldn’t turn my neck. Finished it, and it was leaving on the tow truck, I turned to walk back and my neck had full movement.
Youre videos really helped me learn about how i can fix my body but i could mever get my hips to relax until i used two tennis balls and layed stomach down on the floor with them pushing into my psoas. It allowed me to finally breathe in the correct way, fixed my paradox breathing in seconds and made a tremendous difference in a matter of just two days
Also makes me think of a client I had in my office who I was testing for neck pain.
I had soft jazz music playing in the background (originating from her right side). Her whole body was hypertonic. As soon as I turned the music off, she tested normal. Got the ideas flowing after that for sure.
Could be two things that I can think of and have seen: Sometimes Jazz is a bit "non-predictable" in regards to rhythm, it can confuse a brain. I've shown this is one of my videos. Someone with perfect rhythm walked to a "non-rhythmic" song and went back into the left AIC pattern, and her neck tightened up considerably.
It could also be that the right brain is more musical, so playing the music towards the left ear *may* change the outcome.
This is so interesting. I use a single airtube earphone to listen to podcasts and it doesn't feel right if I have it in my right ear, it has to be in my left ear to feel comfortable. I have horrible tension in my neck and shoulders, have been slowly unwinding it over the years but it is still really bad. I am going to switch to my right ear and see what happens, thanks so much!
It can't hurt to experiment. Just also realize that the auditory system is closely tied into vision and jaw/teeth, so once could conceivable overuse one ear in relation to what is being seen and sensed in those two areas.
@@NealHallinanThank You Neal. Ive wisdom tooth coming up on one side, can that be a possible reason for hideous neck/ shoulder tension?
Im mind blown!!
I have been trying PRI for the past 2 years I went to 3 different PRI specialits 1 in new york and 2 in texas and nothing seems to work.
I have a feeling that once I fix my bite you will be my last resort neal . from the videos you post . you are the one who knows PRI the best
Gold worth, i am using your information and several others gems like yourself on YT to fix myself.
Thank you for the information!
Thank you so much. I suspect my right ear hearing was affected by an infection when I was young. Blocking my left ear had me Relax almost Immediately.
Amazing timing 👏 i have recently been discovering the power of the vagus nerve and even how inflammatory foods in the gut can trigger low back pain through the vagus nerve endings in the abdomen.
Fascinating! Much love and gratitude.
Your vids and logic are awesome!
Thank you.
I love dance too, thank you so much for being a music/dance advocate.
When we make conscious what is usually operating from our subconscious, we can then make a conscious correction.
We can repeatedly practice the conscious correction till it becomes habit and becomes subconscious.
When pain is involved or limited range of motion, one-on-one in-person support from a physical therapist can help us recognize the progression of exercises needed when one correction results in a different problem coming to light.
In my hip-related issue, it started as a sciatic nerve pinch in my right glute that, after practicing glute and core strengthening exercises for a period of weeks, brought right IT Band tightness to light. So additional exercises were added to help that.
Basically sciatic nerve glide was practiced taking care to keep my right foot pointing straight (it was rotated outward previously).
Also practiced glute bridges with conscious contraction of glute, lower back, and abdominal muscles (both feet on the ground) which greatly increased strength.
Then right psoas, groin, and adductor tightness came to light. So additional exercises were added for that.
Knee lifts with slow eccentric movements were added.
Side planks with clamshells were added.
Oblique strengthening was added.
The overall fix consisted of training muscles and muscle memory with targeted strengthening step by step.
Initially I was too weak to do most unilateral exercises, so strengthening of both sides together was needed before progressing to unilateral strengthening.
Sometimes guidance through a progression of incremental strengthening is required.
Both body and brain training were required for my case.
This is absolutely fascinating! Thank you ❤
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
I don´t know why but the past year i put in my head to use always my left arm to eat, write and everything.
But i undertood now with your videos that this makes my right side to close and left to open, wich is not good.
One thing that i found that is good is trowing something with the left arm. Trowing with the left arm will oepn the right side and close the left ZOA.
Eating with the left hand was not good because i was opening my left side. But right now i know what to do, open the right side and eating with the left hand is safe right now !!
This changed lots of things understanding this things that you share.
Thank you!
How much of this is also related to there being a conscious or unconscious trauma that has been lodged in the body as a result of being triggered by the word[s] like the man with Professor? Since the Vagus nerve is also associated with amygdala & trauma, I would think that there’s a strong correlation here. As in, was the issue with the movement as a result of hearing the word as a stored physical tension from cringing at the sound each time that created the pattern?
Interestingly, I was out with my Dad celebrating his birthday & near to us was a woman who kept talking & her voice was bothering him. He mentioned how his upper shoulder felt tense & bothersome so I massaged it a few times when he mentioned it. Ironically, & I actually wasn’t surprised, when she left, he turned to me & said “it wasn’t bothering him anymore!”
People don’t even realize how much they give power to things outside of themselves with old unconscious belief systems (BS), patterns, perceptions, etc.
Very fascinating & this is why I say the “Body is ultimately the Tattletale of the Mind!”
I agree with you completely. It certainly could be related to trauma. We discussed that. I’ll have more to say about that in a future video. Alfred Tomatis described the left ear as the “history/trauma” ear and the right ear as the “present/future” ear, so it’s possible that his left ear is processing certain words in certain contexts. I have to experiment more.
My left ear is now plugged and as I talk to myself my hearing sounds marginally better than if I am to plug up both ears. My right ear is far more impaired than I thought. I wonder how greatly this has been contributing to my misaligned jaw dysfunction. My right side is very tight and struggles with range of motion relative to my left.
What happens when pronate the right foot on carpet
, and power push the ball of right foot and big toe into floor being then the major force absorbers. Any change in right sided tension?
Me too
Wow, this really makes a lot sense.
Incredible ❤
saving up to come work with you soon!

Hi Neal, always enjoy watching your videos! And this one makes me wonder is you can explain neurologically the phenomenon that I start to cry every time I start singing. Except for the emotional trauma I am sure there are neurological explanations to it. Especially if to Concorde polyvagal theory. Woul be grateful if you share your thoughts and experience on this.
You are amazing. Thank you 🙏
thank you
Wonderful stuff Neal. I always feel i hear better with my left ear so i put an ear plug in that ear and my anxiety has dramatically decreased! My question is therefore how do we address this problem on a day to day basis? Do i have to reduce ear noise input into the left ear or say, amplify the sound into the right? Your input would be much appreciated 👍
To be honest, I don’t know. I’m just experimenting with different things. Sometimes I wear a hearing aid in my right ear only. That seems to re-ground me. But it’s also what I wear on my feet, oddly enough. When barefoot on flat surfaces I’m more likely to use my left ear, for sensory “grounding”.
@@NealHallinan Flat surfaces are a nightmare for me, panic attacks ensue without shoes! It's fascinating the differential in volume between each ear.
so fascinating, thank you.
Great video Neal! Quick question, what is the object used by singers called? I seem to have a left ear bias in terms of the volume and clarity of my voice.
yes I have problems understanding people, especially when there are background noises...
If I understood correctly, they say you cant cure auditory prcossing disorder, but I am sure its cureable, especially with the knowledge you are spreading...
and I tried plugging my left ear when listening to this video, I dont feel irritated, but when I plug my right ear I get so frustrated listening to this video trying keep up what you say...
I am curious where this is going to lead me

Neal, we love you bro! Interesting! Should we try to do pri techniques with one ear closed to check?

You could certainly try. I have many people close one eye at a time just to see if they experience their muscles differently. Just in case their eyes are "fighting" each other.
I don't know how common the language/hearing issue is, however. I have found some people who tighten up when listening to high frequency sounds through their left ear (a female British accent will make them lose neck ROM and shoulder ROM)
dang this is interesting! I’m in grad school rn to be an SLP and I’ve worked with ppl who stutter in the past so it’s cool to make this connection. I am a indian classical dancer, and am undergoing PT and was lucky enough to find a PRI practitioner, I follow your videos, and through that I have improved my single leg squat and 0 pain there. My dance is very similar to Ballet, the plie position still hurts quite a bit. Please can you make a video about how weight should be distributed so the glutes and hamstrings participate in that "symmetric" position please 😢
I'm not sure the glutes/hammies can actually participate in the plie position because you are on your toes. As weight shifts toward the toes, things become more quad/calf dominant becaues the pelvis will tilt forward.
@@NealHallinan Wow thank you for your reply! Really appreciate it! Well, the heel is not always up, the feet are flat, and we lift and stamp one leg at a time while the hip is externally rotated. For the times that the heel is up, I understand that the movement involves more quad

I have auditory processing issues and had bad infections in my right ear as a child, with chronic mastoiditis and a plugged eustacian tube.
And I have back and neck tension
Another important fact brought from you! How to fix ear imbalances like that? Cheers from Brazil!
Oi! I don't know about the ear issue. It's just something that has been observed. I can't say what to do about it at this point. I have to research further.
I think the big cause of human posture problems, is stress, either physical or emotional. It changes our physiology from head to toe. That's what I've perceived, from many years of studing PT, Remedial Massage Therapy, observing myself and other people! By the way, stress is deforming the human body for generations!
Where is the link to your postural teachings do you offer virtual treatments my vagus nerve is so bad
That's amazing. I blocked my left ear with an ear plug and my entire tension pattern released. So what is the fix for this? I can't wander around with my left ear plugged all the time - not least because it starts to hurt eventually. And I can't imagine it's a good idea to completely remove the sensory information permanently from one ear.
Any recommendations to correct that neck tension. Also, what are you thoughts on vagus nerve simulations
I realised that my right ear is dry and all wierd, especially when my head touches something as im lying down. Then when something load happens my right ear gets overwhelmed. I realised now that it has to do with my thicker septum, due to trauma in accidents, sports and combat.
I´m aiming for surgery for my septum, now that I realised how clogged up my right nose and sinus is every morning due to the thinner space, dryer air and everything.
Decided to leave this here for everybody, maybe it helps someone realise they have the same problem.
Loved the Brazilian flag! Neal, your videos helped me A LOT to understand some of the postural misalignments I developed during my life, and i'm seeing progress. A curious thing that started to happen is sometimes I ear a "pop" in my left ear and it seems I started to hear better after that (not a lot better, just a little better). During my life I noticed that I heard better with the right ear, while I heard with lower volume with the left ear. There are a direct explanation for this "pop" in my left ear?
Eu adoro o Brasil (Axe/pagode e minha musica preferida). Popping in the ear *can* be related to the Eustachian tube. But Eustachian tube disorder is complicated because it can involvedthe jaw/teeth.

This is SO interesting! So would people with hearing issues be more likely to get neck pain if using only 1 hearing aid vs bilateral aids?I've had a severe hearing loss for most of my life, wear a hearing aid typically on the right side, and also have had pretty bad neck and jaw tension/teeth grinding for years. The shoulder rotation test didn't seem to do anything for me, but I might have to pay more attention to how wearing 1 hearing aid or 2 affects my posture.

Can you address when this area is injured, disabled, disordered, dysfunctioned, brain damaged involving genetics, but also being involved in situations, experiences, such as car accident resulting in fractured vertebrates, and coccyx or injury resulting from medication, or tbi, or ptsd, or processing disorders, or hypertonicity in the muscles, ligaments, joints, tendons, or processing disorders or things like autism, inability to speak and participate in communication? Like significant impact accidents, such as being kicked by a horse, or surviving lilfe threatening situations, that resulted in the above senario. Or is that beyond you?
