One thing that would be helpful is when you have a 2 or 3 part video link parts 1 and 2 in your More Info section so they are easy to find if someone first starts with a video out of order.
Thanks for the videos! I have tried numerous times to root hardwood cuttings of apple and pear in the same way you did, and they always failed. They would leaf out always, then always shrivel up and die as they had no roots. HERE'S AN IDEA FROM RUSSIA. Cut the scions while still on the tree only about 3/4 through so they are still attached by a piece of bark on one side just below a bud. Then tape them up again tightly so they don't fall off if a bird lands on them. You do this for 2 or two and one half months in winter when they are dormant, but 2 1/2 months before they would normally leaf out. Roughly Feb. 1 if your apple or pear trees start to leaf out in mid April in your area. Then just before the tree is about to start to leaf out, you cut off the scions at the cut you made. This is supposed to concentrate the rooting hormones of the scion at the cut. Put in the greenhouses/jars as you did with a bit of ACTIVATED CHARCOAL in the bottom of the water. This will really help to prevent mold. They should start rooting after about 3 weeks right in the jar. Then plant as you show in the video. You should have MUCH better results if you do this. Good luck to all trying this.
Right; I do a lot of this stuff as I love gardening; I had success in citrus from seeding. At the moment I am in progress in peach trees from cuttings as I tried it from seeding but failed. The cutting were cut in January; the tree which I took the cutting from were deciduous; no leaves at all. I choose a long cutting and took about five pieces from two pieces thus having ten pieces about eight inches long and thick the size of a pencil or a bit more.I did normal system in preparing them, cuttin 45 degree from butt and renoving about three centimeters skin all round. I tried different ways after letting them in water for three days. At the pieces were a bit thick; I used a method which OUR Old Maltese Farmers used to do; that is "beat" the rooting uncovered part (three centimeter) with a stone thus crushing the sleeveless part. I used a "cocktail" of rooting receipe, dip in honey + hormose rooting powder and cumin. Used mixture of 30% soil, 50% compost and 20% perlite. Use same method in potting as you BUT did put the pots in a dish or water with about three centimetre deep for self absorbing instead of watering them. I had a 100% success and now are three months old; now the last phase; when do I remove them from their small pots to a bigger one in the soil only ? Greeings From Malta- Europe.

I'm going to try this year to get a pear and hazelnut from a friend's property. I might wait until the roots begin to form in the water before transplanting to soil. In my experience, that can take 2-3 months.
I'm trying this now with sweet and sour cherry clippings. The sweet ones have just gotten green swollen tops now so I moved those to soil, or at least a few of them. The sour cherry cuttings are more challenging though, a few turned a bit greener on the exterior but not much else has happen. I've put two of those to soil too, see what happens over the next few weeks. Thanks for showing Rob. subscribed!
I use the "3 cup method" using an additional clear cup with only one hole at top to keep humudity in but not enough that it molds. Soil medium is 50/ 50 peat moss / perlite mix, pre moist to where it clumps but no water comes out when squeezed. ( I boil water & pour on pear moss to kill any pests or their eggs that may be in it. Only soak cuttings in purified water about 1/2 hr or so. I remove bark to reveal cadmium layer at end, then insert after using root hormone. Ive tried the liquid, powder but have had good results with aloe and its less chemicals on your fruit cuttings. Place the cuttings on a heat matt around 72°. Check in 2 weeks. They last in the lil greenhouse cups for several weeks without additional watering. Good luck, Keep trying.
I love using Aloe too, you can buy a huge leaf in the grocery store for propagation; So how do you tell when it’s rooted if you didn’t use cups ? I put my figs in a container (I wish I would’ve used clear cups), there’s green growth at the upper nods……

So what happened? I have tried doing apple and pear cuttings this way over years, taking them when dormant and also when green shoots. (Just found your update below... thanks... I note it is difficult as I ws saying and there may be other things to do to get success.) They always produce lots of nice green leaves at first but whether in cuttings propagators or plastic bags they always end up withering and dying. Figs work great in this way and so do peaches, but apples and pears, can't get them to work. Perhaps you had more success?

Would it not have been better to put the cuttings in the loose soil first then compact if a tight fit was desirable or is there a reason not to use that method?

Eddie Sanchez this one failed as I did it acclimate the cuttings from the high humidity to no humidity when removing the wrap in trying to prevent mold.
I was told by a couple of people I trust that cuttings from stone fruit were very difficult to root. Did you find that to be so? Also, did you do any research on the trees you took the cuttings from to see if they were grafted varieties, in which case the cuttings might have come from tree varieties that were not necessarily strong growers and that's why they were grafted. .
Harriette Jensen I did. Your trusted source was correct. Most perished before they truly set good roots down. A few survived for a while but were stunted and never really grew well.
Wouldn’t you have less of a chance of an air pocket if you just pushed the stem into the soil, without first making a larger diameter hole with the sharpie?

Mitch Everson I started them airtight and opened them up for a few hours a day. As they developed roots, I started to leave them open longer to acclimate to dryer conditions. Thanks for watching!
Rob Backyard Gardenerr My brief experience with cuttings ( apple , plum , cherry and pear and last year fig ) i skip the water part and pot them in peatmoss cakeing on the rooting power many of my cuttings are two year old wood ,some are this seasons growth. THE SPROUTING OF LEAVES HAPPEN VERY FAST . SAY IN AS SHORT AS 7 DAYS . LEAVES AN INCH LONG IN SOME CASES . Doesnt mean much except that the cuttings havent died . No visible root growth but some cherry cutting show the white spots on the stem outside the soil. The old wood cuttings may have peachfuzz hair like roots after about a month .. you are way ahead of me in your first try . Did your methods produce any roots on tour peach and pear cuttings?
Bob Brawley they did on the pear trees but not the peach Trees. I'll tell you that you are right. Leaves don't mean roots for sure. Also, many struggled once removed from the greenhouses - they dried out during acclimation. To any extent, I did learn a lot and your tips will be helpful later on for sure! Thank you!
I did with my. Lots of leaves and stems came out. However there were no roots. How do you make the roots to come out so that once you take out of the water they will not die?

Well to me that's a success ..and its always good to see what went right and what went wrong, I just started 19 cuttings from Apple, Pear and Plum, 5 days ago. I read somewhere in video comments that its very hard to grow Pear from cuttings, so wow, good job.! ..Personally I'd be happy to get 2 trees from my efforts ...thanks.
Postofficejoe Thank you. Had I paid attention to the mold as it started to occur, I likely would have been able to save a few more. There were a total of 14 peach trees and 8 pear tree cuttings so 2/22 is okay. The pear tree cutting I planted into a pot is doing OK but the peach tree cutting is doing really well. The roots should form before the leaves or the cutting will die. Without roots a plant cannot live. Why do people make vids about things they know nothing about?
Dusty Stahn it’s interesting that the ones I selected to propagate didn’t make it as the swelled root points didn’t have roots yet. The ones in the jars developed roots after a few more weeks and a few of them did make it. So, you’re right for sure - the cuttings needed root systems in order to survive. This was a test as outlined in the video. I appreciate your comment and thank you for stopping by to leave it. I’m leaning as I grow and part of learning is experimenting with things I “know nothing about.” Happy gardening.
I'd wait at least 6-8 weeks, but more importantly, be sure that they have roots formed first. Also, don't full remove the bag at first. The plants will have grown accustomed to high humidity and will likely dry out and die if you go from 100% humidity to normal household or outside humidity. Just allow some air into the bag for the next few weeks as well (either cut holes or keep the bottom of the bag open. I've learned the hard way - LOL.
Mr. Nice Guy Great question. The answer is no. That being said, cloning liquid or powder can certainly help ensure success. If I were to use something to aid in their success however, I'd use either honey or molasses as both are organic and accomplish the same thing without hormones or chemicals. The great thing about gardening is that we can all use our own preferred methods that work for us. Thank you for watching and for your question!

Sorry Samad - I was doing this as an experiment and didn't plan on growing any more trees. At first I thought I would but didn't. A few made it to the rooting stage and would have been fine. The rest didn't make it once I acclimated them to the outside...
Andrea Čierna I know... the trick is to not remove them from the bag until you are certain that they have roots. Success rate is low without a lot of moisture and humidity and it also depends on the season. Got to pick them during the winter.

No indoors, in a container, with a plastic bag over it so it contains the heat. All the clippings died however...

Yes - normal saturation level as the moisture doesn’t evaporate too fast but little watering needed.

Great video... Are your mini greenhouse bottles completely airtight, or do you leave the lids loose? I'm trying out Cherry cuttings in water (mason jar no lid), I'm wondering if I need to edit my experiment more towards yours
Mitch Everson I started them airtight and opened them up for a few hours a day. As they developed roots, I started to leave them open longer to acclimate to dryer conditions. Thanks for watching!

Rob Backyard Gardenerr My brief experience with cuttings ( apple , plum , cherry and pear and last year fig ) i skip the water part and pot them in peatmoss cakeing on the rooting power many of my cuttings are two year old wood ,some are this seasons growth. THE SPROUTING OF LEAVES HAPPEN VERY FAST . SAY IN AS SHORT AS 7 DAYS . LEAVES AN INCH LONG IN SOME CASES . Doesnt mean much except that the cuttings havent died . No visible root growth but some cherry cutting show the white spots on the stem outside the soil. The old wood cuttings may have peachfuzz hair like roots after about a month .. you are way ahead of me in your first try . Did your methods produce any roots on tour peach and pear cuttings?
Bob Brawley they did on the pear trees but not the peach Trees. I'll tell you that you are right. Leaves don't mean roots for sure. Also, many struggled once removed from the greenhouses - they dried out during acclimation. To any extent, I did learn a lot and your tips will be helpful later on for sure! Thank you!

I did with my. Lots of leaves and stems came out. However there were no roots. How do you make the roots to come out so that once you take out of the water they will not die?

THEY TAKE the cuttingfrom last season's growth in december graft on a scion . TAKE THE COMBINED grafted cutting and pack them in moisten peetmoss in clear plastic bags , like a contractors size plastic bag with many cuttings place them in a lighted heated room temp 85 F. king gameing you can use rooting hormone or a honey/cinnamon mix - it works the same and is organic!
I tried cherry tree cuttings and they just molded...how do I get them to root? I want to try again.
@@EricThompson-gs9ce try scraping lightly the cherry skin off the bottom don't scrape all the bark off also make sure at least 2 buds go into the soil because that's where roots sprout from use rooting hormone many stores carry them I used homet depot one and potting mix I had 5 of 7 cherry ones success

I did get one pear cutting and 1 peach cutting to take root and have them in pots in my yard. I'll try to give an update on them soon!
Well to me that's a success ..and its always good to see what went right and what went wrong, I just started 19 cuttings from Apple, Pear and Plum, 5 days ago. I read somewhere in video comments that its very hard to grow Pear from cuttings, so wow, good job.! ..Personally I'd be happy to get 2 trees from my efforts ...thanks.
Postofficejoe Thank you. Had I paid attention to the mold as it started to occur, I likely would have been able to save a few more. There were a total of 14 peach trees and 8 pear tree cuttings so 2/22 is okay. The pear tree cutting I planted into a pot is doing OK but the peach tree cutting is doing really well. Again, thanks for watching and I'd love to know how your cuttings turn out!

I get mold inside the bags when I do this. Wonder what I am doing wrong.
I use 3% hydrogen peroxide with watering at the beginning to avoid mould.
The roots should form before the leaves or the cutting will die. Without roots a plant cannot live. Why do people make vids about things they know nothing about?
Dusty Stahn it’s interesting that the ones I selected to propagate didn’t make it as the swelled root points didn’t have roots yet. The ones in the jars developed roots after a few more weeks and a few of them did make it. So, you’re right for sure - the cuttings needed root systems in order to survive. This was a test as outlined in the video. I appreciate your comment and thank you for stopping by to leave it. I’m leaning as I grow and part of learning is experimenting with things I “know nothing about.” Happy gardening.

TheEVOPLAYER are you letting in a little air daily? About 5 minutes twice a day helps the air and plant breath.

I'd wait at least 6-8 weeks, but more importantly, be sure that they have roots formed first. Also, don't full remove the bag at first. The plants will have grown accustomed to high humidity and will likely dry out and die if you go from 100% humidity to normal household or outside humidity. Just allow some air into the bag for the next few weeks as well (either cut holes or keep the bottom of the bag open. I've learned the hard way - LOL.

Mr. Nice Guy Great question. The answer is no. That being said, cloning liquid or powder can certainly help ensure success. If I were to use something to aid in their success however, I'd use either honey or molasses as both are organic and accomplish the same thing without hormones or chemicals. The great thing about gardening is that we can all use our own preferred methods that work for us. Thank you for watching and for your question!

Rob Backyard Gardenerr The is a good video currentlyon RUclips comparing rooting powder , honey and nothing at all and all three got successful results. . Honey did way better than nothing at all . ROOTING POWDER did much better than honey . THE VIDEO CONVIENCED ME TO GOOB ON THE ROOTING POWDER WHICH IS A NATURAL DERIVED HORMONE or so claimed. I MEAN dont we all use plastic pots and bags in gardening and think nothing of chemical contamination from said plastic

hello. any update of the result.?
AC Creative Studio it was a tough series to maintain and in the conditions I used - impossible. Here's my learnings:
1) Should have used either rooting hormone or honey/cinnamon to expedite rooting
2) Should have kept them in the greenhouses with a few minutes exposed to air everyday to prevent mold
3) Should have used less light (the time was at 16 hrs per day)
4) Once they rooted, I should have slowly acclimated them to less humid conditions (poke holes in the bags and eventually cut larger holes until the plant reacclimated to less than 100% humidity conditions
5) Should have updated my viewers on the series as it started to fail and/or with my failings.

Sorry Samad - I was doing this as an experiment and didn't plan on growing any more trees. At first I thought I would but didn't. A few made it to the rooting stage and would have been fine. The rest didn't make it once I acclimated them to the outside...

Andrea Čierna I know... the trick is to not remove them from the bag until you are certain that they have roots. Success rate is low without a lot of moisture and humidity and it also depends on the season. Got to pick them during the winter.
