I've replaced my driver with the Taylormade original one. I've gained so much confidence in hitting fairways, and surprisingly to me, I have not lost any distance. I can still get this thing out over 300 yards. Love it
TM original one owner here. Absolutely love it!! Able to find fairways, and if the lie is right use it off the deck. Carry mini and then 7 wood because I can use mini off the deck.
Great video James! This is an interesting topic that I don’t think very many of us give serious thought to. Based on the lack of real rails on the Cobra I’m 90% sure I’d go with the TaylorMade if I was looking for a, fairway finder, driver replacement. Doesn’t look like either are a good bet off the turf. 😀
I've played the Callaway Mini Driver for 2 years. Yesterday, I brought my old driver too for a comparison over 9 jolted. Although the driver appeared to launch with a higher ball speed, when I got to the ball it was never past the Mini Driver which was always in the fairway. It is now returned to the shed!
I’d see myself using the mini driver. I like the shorter shaft length and smaller head. Dial it down to 9 degrees and have at it. Thanks James, good vid!
I was looking for a 3W, to work off the deck and off the tee for those days when I am struggling with the driver. I went in to get fitted and finally ended up with the Minidriver. My rational was that I would end up using it off the tee, when there are only 4 Par5's in a round. So depending on the lie I would still use the Minidriver off the deck, but if unable I have a 2W hybrid to bridge the gap in yardage. My numbers were very similar to yours on the Minidriver. I got and pick the Minidriver up this afternoon, cant wait to try it out.
@Tucson Jim Golf sucks in TX compared to AZ. Did you ever play Tourqoise Valley GC down in Naco before they closed? They had a Par 6 "The Rattler" that was neat to play. Dobson Ranch GC was my favorite Muni course to play up in the valley. Courses in TX don't seen to only overseed the greens that I have noticed so far.
If someone were going to game a "fairway finder" along with a driver, then why not play a "Thriver" (i.e. 460cc head with a 3 wood shaft)? I tried these strong 3 woods and mini drivers, but the head was too small in relation to driver heads, so I didn't have the same confidence. I only had 13 clubs in my bag anyway, so I put a Thriver in the bag. OMG, I love it. The larger head and the shorter shaft is such a great combination that you feel you just can't miss it. I hit it about 10-12 yards shorter than my driver, but a lot straighter. On my home course, I hit it off the tee 6 times and my driver 6 times. If I try to choke down the driver, the weight is way off because I can't feel the head, so I can't just do that to save a club in the bag. Would love to see you test your dispersion with a driver head and the shorter shaft (the head will need to have more weight to offset the shorter shaft, but I'm sure you know more about that stuff than we do anyway). I could almost guarantee that your dispersion will be better than either of these 2 clubs due to the forgiveness of a 460cc head.
I've done the Thriver with a Cobra F8+ head and 3 wood shaft, I also have a F6 5 wood head that I put on at either 17° or 20° depending on where I'm playing. I don't tend to use the Thriver as much any more as I found a driver that works ok for me at the moment. The joy of modern tech is if you buy equipment of the same manufacturer you can Frankenstein bits together just too see how it goes, and if you do it with older heads you can do it for less than the price of new gear.
@@stevoislookingforgolfballs8046 Yup. The only issue can be that using a shorter shaft only can mess up the swing weight (i.e. tough time feeling the clubface). Nothing that some heavier weights in the head or lead tape can't fix pretty easily. And, yes, if you are hitting your driver longer and as straight, then no need for the Thriver. I can't wait until I find a driver that allows me to get rid of the Thriver, but yet to find one. :)
@@bradfordcotta5925 I used lead tape on mine while I was playing it, finding a driver that worked was a total fluke, a step away from the big name manufacturers and found at my local golf store in the run out bin for $250.00 aus on a day when I was only there to kill time between running around after my kids.
I totally agree, can't stand these big bubble heads. Michael Newton did a comparison of a 460 head on the shorter mini shaft and the mini trumped it for distance & disperson.. I currently play an x2hot 12.5 2 deep and love it!
Hi James where is the best place to get the original one? My dad plays with the sldr mini driver and was looking to get his one to replace it for his 60th. Currently can’t find them anywhere.
James, I think the TM Mini Driver is the choice with that tight dispersion. If you need to get rid of that Cobra Big Tour 3-wood...... You can mail it this way when you come back over the Pond for your Masters Golfmates trip :) I just purchased a 2019 Cobra F9 White w Matte finish.....I cannot wait for SPRING..!!!
Great video again James. I picked up a mini driver stiff shaft from a friend for £150 (couldn't pass it up at that price) and I played my first round with it this week. I normally play an M3 reg shaft and it can be erratic to say the least. I was astounded with the accuracy of the mini driver as i didn't miss a single fairway, I think I've sacrificed 15 yards but will take that all day if it's on the fw. I'll likely take both out for tomorrows round but I'm very impressed with it so far.
I have an epic flash sub zero 3+ wood that I play at 12.5 instead of a driver.I just feel more comfortable with it and carry it further than my driver on average. Was good meeting you tonight at the club
Hi James Happy New year to you How much further can you hit the 3 tour Cobra, than your normal 3 wood, the Cobra looks the business, i am terrible with a driver & my three wood is magic

Ended up with the F9 that I like alot but there's a little bit of my wishes I'd hung on and tested it against the mini driver. Nevermind what's done is done. Thanks for the video pal
I just picked up a used Mini Driver and it goes almost as long as my 2017 M1 driver but much straighter with better center contact. As a new-ish, high handicapper, I think it's worth putting in the bag in place of the driver to find more fairways until I can improve with my driver. Back to back holes with the driver over the weekend, I bombed one fairway, slice-blasted the next one.

I would like Cobra 3 wood. Interesting comparison. I tried the Mini driver but it didn’t work so I purchased Callaway Epic driver and 3 wood. For me it just works.
Cobra all the way got fitted for the F9 driver and the tour 3 wood that i keep at 13.5. They have been a one two punch off the tee 💪👍 and the 3 wood is so versatile high low par 5 in 2 just fantastic 🙌.
How do these compare in distance and dispersion to a 3 wood off the tee? I'm curious to see if either is enough better to justify buying one over just using my 3 wood to find fairways.
Happy New Year to you. I am having this debate as well but replacing my 3 wood with a mini-driver since I use the 3 wood mostly off the tee and 5 wood off the fairway and looking for more distance. I play off 14 with, as well as you, a left miss. Played the 14* Mini Driver for a couple of years. Type of course I was a member at required fairways to be found over distance with a number of mid length and short par 4’s with hazards in play for the driver. G410 driver and 5w in the bag these days.
I updated my clubs to Cobra F9 last year. I like the Driver but tend to be erratic, so I use the 3-4 wood off the tee a lot, set at 16 degrees ( I am getting older and slower) . I think had this Big Tour been available I would have been better served to buy it and a 5 wood. Now it comes down to price . The TM mini driver is being heavily discounted in OZ ( $349 Au) . So basically you could have the same club by getting a 10.5 degree driver head lofting it up as far as it will go and sticking a shorter shaft in it (might have to add some hot melt to the head to make swing weight right). Last time I got my driver shaft shortened it cost me £12 - a lot less than a new club!
Speedzone Xtream driver and the Big Tour 3w. Use the Big Tour to hit those tight fairways off the Tee. Hit the Big Tour off the first tee at Harbor Town
Nice comparison. But maybe you were over swinging the 3w since you knew you were pitting it against a driver, mini or otherwise. BTW, I see you're rocking a GolfMates half-zip. Did Liam give that to you or did he make you pony up the 29 quid and change?
A driver i struggle to control so i use my hybrid. I do have sldr mini but i find using reg shaft difficult as this was before proper fitting. I also have a gbb driver but no confidence in it. I would look at getting another mini or 3 wood just to help with more distance but control of hybrid
I would game the big tour, all day. I rented the mini driver and the feel is like hitting a golf ball with a rock. I do not care for the sound of the mini. I currently use the blue F7 cobra 3 wood, lofted down to 13.5 degrees and for a while I didnt even carry a driver. Most days off the tee I average about 270 with my 3 wood off the tee. Side note, your left shots may be down to a swing weight issue. when I swing a golf club, ANY golf club, that is lighter than a D4, I will hook it all day.
Big Tour 3 wood is a no brainer you can loft it low and replace your driver or loft high and keep it as your 3wood something about that cobra face is explosive
Long shot question, but can anyone compare the big tour to Titleist 915f+? Been gaming that for years, I outdrive my buddies regularly. The big tour caught my eye with the same loft adjustments and the weight closer to the face. I'll admit that I just want to justify my disease of buying a golf club and need someones assistance...
James I thought that late last year in one of your videos you talked about weakening you right hand grip somewhat to get rid of the surprise ( left ) ball. I don't think you stayed with that line of thought, just saying by the looks of your flight pattern. New year, new weaker right hand grip, even if it's just a tad weaker......
I game the TM Mini Driver instead of a regular driver. Just tired of slicing balls into oblivion. Goes about the same distance because I feel more comfortable going after it a little more with the mini. Got mine on sale for $225 CAD on cyber monday, an absolute bargain. I would say it's worth $300CAD though for sure.
Was seriously considering the original one......but now my mizuno gt180 has started behaving itself.....even won long drive at the weekend tournament.....thinking the secret is to threaten them with replacement every now and then 😂
Dr stranglewank you’re a lucky guy, even after threaten them they still don’t behave, and after i bought the new one, they don’t behave either 🤪 golf is a funny game
I game one of these as a driver. I love it. Way more confident off the tee and no loss of distance for me.

Nice comparison. But maybe you were over swinging the 3w since you knew you were pitting it against a driver, mini or otherwise. BTW, I see you're rocking a GolfMates half-zip. Did Liam give that to you or did he make you pony up the 29 quid and change?
Very good head to head and I have to admit I would find it hard to choose
A driver i struggle to control so i use my hybrid. I do have sldr mini but i find using reg shaft difficult as this was before proper fitting. I also have a gbb driver but no confidence in it. I would look at getting another mini or 3 wood just to help with more distance but control of hybrid
You won't find better than the cobra range this year although I've just bagged the f9 driver 3 wood and forged tec irons 👌⛳
Great review for any body looking for a driver replacement
Yeah I don’t get the adjustability apparently fitters say spine alignment is important so surely adjusting it isn’t a great idea
Nice vids James. Love your reviews.
Still playing the SLDR mini. Mostly off the tee.
It’s really hard to go past that cobra, plus you could use it easier off the fairway
when can I get my hands on the cobra big tour?
Great video James
Excellent video, very informative!
I love the top of the Original One.
Ever thought of just aiming slightly right and allowing that pull shot to happen and take over. Bombs down the middle every time 👍
The mini looks like a good choice.
I recently did my review test on the Taylormade SLDR mini driver and it really surprised me👀
🐊🏌️♂️🚩🇺🇸🦅👍
I just like to use an older 380 cc callaway driver as my mini driver works fine and way cheaper too
Why not use a standard driver, but with a 44 inch shaft?
would love to see a cobra speedzone extreme vs the cleveland turbo
launcher.........battle of the more affordable drivers and
forgiving....thx
James I thought that late last year in one of your videos you talked about weakening you right hand grip somewhat to get rid of the surprise ( left ) ball. I don't think you stayed with that line of thought, just saying by the looks of your flight pattern. New year, new weaker right hand grip, even if it's just a tad weaker......
2020 might be a good year for a swing overhaul. Go see someone and vlog it.
James- I feel your pain since left is my feared miss. I would struggle to game the Cobra seeing that many go left. #1leftis1toomany!
Looks like Mini Driver to me !
How about doing a review on the new Ben Hogan driver
I’m going to give the new cobra driver a go as I’m looking for a new driver
I game the TM Mini Driver instead of a regular driver. Just tired of slicing balls into oblivion. Goes about the same distance because I feel more comfortable going after it a little more with the mini. Got mine on sale for $225 CAD on cyber monday, an absolute bargain. I would say it's worth $300CAD though for sure.
I really really want an original one but they are impossible to find anymore.
one on ebay currently. £280 so far with 2 days left. Going to be an expensive bit of kit for someone
love the mini driver
Cobra as I believe price wise it is more value for money
Ping g400 stretch and the callaway 3 deep old but works
What is the price difference James. Might make up minds ?
Liam from golfmates needs a new driver.?
Do you think taylormade will make a new mini driver?!
@@dzakihasya7795 they need to be in earshot or it won't work.
Cant find anywhere that sells the mini driver! Anyone know where to get it in the uk?
monsieurgolf.com (french website but delivers abroad. just not now because of the CORONA virus) i'm waiting for mine...
If I could afford it I would use either not had a new wood in 10 to 12 years
I'd love to have the cobra as my driver
I want height in my 3 wood to drop them soft on the par 5s. Can you remove the bad shots to give us a valid comparison?
