As far as I can tell, snap points and support structures are handled separately. That is to say, a given wall might need something to snap to in order to be placed, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the unit being snapped to is "supporting" that wall.

I'm a starter to Ark and I've been play Ark Survival Evolved all day! And I got a pretty Shabby thatch house with spike walls around it, and I also got dino's A Spino,Sarco,Raptor,Yeti they all have saddles but the Yeti dosen't have a saddle for it
But I'm so happy that I finally got to get the game
Tomorrow I'm focusing on getting a Mammoth and Ankylo for harvesting.

Also only way to tame a yeti is to spawn and force tame it lol

hey slip! another great video! i have a building tip! when you are building like on 9:20 use a weapon whit a cross eye when u build. u have to look at the ceiling or foundation u wanna place it on to change the direction of the wall. if u look to high at the foundation above it, the wall will face the other way.

Building Mechanics in Ark explained - Please thumbs up so Sl1p will read it. I want to see him build more amazing things, don't you!?
There are two checks primarily. 1) Groundtrace (whether the object is connected to the ground in some fashion) and 2) foundation suppose being within 2 blocks.
If either fails, the object will get demolished or won't be place-able. Now, when you demolish something, the game checks adjacent objects to determine if the previously destroyed object was a necessary component.
Interesting fact about 'foundation support' checks. Pillars and Foundations are both classed as foundations. The game does NOT care if the foundation that is supporting an object is connected to that object. The game uses a TOP DOWN approach. Think about bridges across large gaps. You can run a series of foundations along the ground, and then build ceilings (directly above it, but not connected to it, all the way across the gorge. That is because that 'square' is classed as a foundation.
This is why you are able to build ceilings over foundations and/or pillar/ceiling floor combinations, whereas you can't build out more than two ceilings over nothing as you won't have foundation support.
For a lot of structures, walls, ceilings, etc you HAVE to snap to something for it to place. It does not have free placement like a foundation or pillar. This plus the aforementioned mechanics is why you had to place the ceiling to 'build off of' but could destroy it afterwords without everything collapsing.
Sorry for this being so long, as sl1p said...Ark is complicated.
Oh, and a small tip for building bridges like I mentioned to guarantee the 'top' (bridge) and the bottom (foundations) align. Build the foundations (or more realistically, the pillars+ceilings so that ground variation isn't an issue) just off the ground, then from pillar/ceiling closest to the wall, pillar all the way up to the level where you want the bridge to be, then build ceilings straight across. You will not need pillars going all the way up.

What's supporting the center wall @around 14m and 17m is the combination of pillarceiling (foundation) walls-->ceiling-->walls walls can't support walls sideways, only up/down.

Hey Sl1p, why don't you craft while you harvest. I fill my mammoth/beaver then craft it all up. Rince and repeat until the mammoth is full of building peices. For stone I use my Deodic + Mammoth. Fill mammoth, then deodic, craft, fill deodic, craft, refill mammoth when empty. Rince and repeat. Cheers for the vids.

I have x3 tame rates for my single player (because herbivores are ridiculous) lvl 92 beaver took almost 600 narcotics to tame up (with Crops).

Have u tested if a beavers weight is transferred through beaver stacks (e.g. Wood 10 not 50) or normal weight (50 stack) when Carried by a quetzal
hey guys, i currently play on xbox one but i want to participate in survival of the fittest which isn't available yet (to my knowledge) on xbox. I own a Macbook pro and was thinking about getting ark on it but I've read the quality of the game is poor on a mac. Is it still worth buying?
Take mr. man out and put him on wander for 15 seconds and babysit him and you got yourself 2k fiber.
Do it for 30 seconds and you're set for quite a while.
just figured a way to deal with alpha dinos...
get a quetza, equip buildable sadle... stop and dismount above the alpha and then spam longrifle fire :3

i think that the stone ceiling gave the walls a snap point. it already had support with the other walls but i just needed a snap point. once placed the ceiling could be taken away because it didnt need more support
Hey Slip,
Building logic is a bit wonky but once you get the hang of it, it is actually very easy.
A few rules i found out:
- Once you have build a foundation or a ceiling on a pillar every ceiling level on top of that is supported
To get the orientation of the walls correct you have to take the following rules to heart.
- The walls on a foundation or ceiling's open edge will snap facing outside.
- When you have connecting ceilings or foundations to get the walls facing the correct way you have to get your cross-hair (center of your screen) on the ceiling you want the inside of the wall to face.
- When placing fence foundations and you are snapping them, and while facing the previous fence, the wall will always face outside and to the right.
I'm still trying to figure out some of the building rules, but i'll keep you posted.

Ok. Those walls come off from those roofs. That's why you were able to get rid of the "ceiling" from under them.
I had the same problem back in the days and the solution to build around those gates was this one.

Really like the build, the detail inside and the additional inner structure make it really interesting to look at. Don't worry, you're not alone in the Ark building system boggling your mind, happens to me all the time. Part of the fun is figuring it all out though. Keep up the good videos, I always enjoy the building episodes.
I still don't understand where the PvP aspect went...he's made 57 episodes and still had no major PvP or anything...
