My cousin who is earning a minimum wage was highly considering the rental program. This video came out and I immediately showed him this. He changed his mind afterwards and decided to keep saving until he could afford one. This might sound nothing but you literally saved a soul who is one step away from a massively terrible financial decision.
That is awesome news and absolutely the right move! He can spend the meantime learning about the hardware he wants to buy outright to get maximum value.
Assuming your cousin is young, it may also very well have saved him from the mindset of renting things you can’t afford to buy, which is more often than not a very bad idea.
No need to buy it all at once get it piece by piece learn about every piece of hardware, just build it yourself. He’ll be better off in the long run and more knowledgeable too.

Partly, but in some ways this is also the return of the bad old days: rental and hire-purchase schemes for appliances were quite a big thing back in around, roughly, the 1970s or even early 1980s, and some of those were notoriously bad deals, too.

This is a deep rooted issue in our modern society, mostly in the west. Not just about pc obviously. The track record of the same private investment firm proving to run both Corsair and NZXT into the ground after a substantial cash injection, then selling them off seems to really show that newer PC companies should be extremely wary of sudden, large investments.
This hit really close to home as growing up my mom fell victim the Rent-to-own trap repeatedly. It is not hard at all. Gone of the days of configuring IRQ's and DMA addresses. All the hard crap is gone now. To build PC's now, you play a game of LEGO and snap pieces in, then connect the wires. The homework that has to be done now is part compatibility to make sure there are matching standars. E.G. pcie gen 3 mobo but you bought a pcie gen 4 nvme SSD. No, most people won't. The majority of humanity is weak, unhealthy, and afraid of everything but the abusive relationship this type of society breeds. From politics, religion, and business (of any kind), humanity would rather live in a convenient abusive and manipulative society than realize we let it happen and it must change. Social media gives us a "voice" and no one really cares. It's genius from a behavior change perspective. If we lived in a great society, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. It would be something that just wouldn't happen in society. However, the vast majority of humanity would need to take a drastic turn. To the point I think you'd literally have to be in a completely different alternate reality to even fathom it could happen People are just as obsessed with power and money as the rulers above them. It's a learned behavior. All of this BS is. You're not born racist. You're not born in love with God, money, politics, consumerism, lying, cheating, stealing, etc. You can call some of them human nature, but you don't really know that if society would shift towards what truly is best for humanity without the overt control over everyone's lives based on numbers on the internet or some piece of paper that says it's worth 100$. I believe the majority of people don't have any idea what they're doing and who they are outside of what they do for money. That's why a lot are weak because their ego and sense of self is wrapped around money. It's fragile. . Idk internet stranger. It's almost like we could all collectively start saying no with this thing called money. What's the worst that happens? You save money by not spending it. Say the first one is Netflix. I made a very high-end build with NZXT BLD. They refused to ship the RTX 4080 separately and said the packaging was safe. It broke during shipping, surprise. They had to send me a new 4080. Then my Ryzen 7900X died a few months later. No overheating, no warning signs of bad CPU. They told me to ship back the PC with the same packaging they sent it with, saying it was fine. Just went to NZXT site, when on the default USA localisation it offers the scam rentals described in this video, changing to my native UK, all rental options are gone! Likely this is because of the stronger consumer protections we have - don't get scammed Americans!
In the UK, the FSA regulates loans and financing. I'm going to guess that these NZXT "rentals" are illegal in the UK due to legislation introduced in 2018 that regulated loans and financing to a maximum of 100% total interest and a maximum of 0.8% interest per day. $15540 over 5 years for a $2309 PC is a 573% total interest, quite a lot more than the legal 100% maximum. We have other legislation that prevents loansharks from circumventing the FSA by calling a loan a rental, so NZXT cannot operate this 'rental' scam over here, they'd be fined and shut down if they tried.
Most Americans don't believe in consumer protection, half the country just voted to remove protections and regulations and give the rich more tax breaks.
Absolute scumbag behaviour here that will turn me off of buying any NZXT product in the new build I'm doing despite being in Australia and having (reasonably) robust consumer protection laws that should mostly stop garbage like this. Having outlets like you and Hardware Unboxed in this space who are willing to stick it to these asshats in the name of consumers is such a privilege, well done.

Nice to see that at least one of the influencers (ZTT) cited in this video issued a full apology, privated all NZXT ads, and promised to not to accept sponsorships from them in the future. Unfortunately in the social media space the level of care required to vet all your business partners is something we see rarely. Thank you Steve and GN for upholding that level of attention on behalf of consumers everywhere!
Zach definitely doesn't do as much vetting for his sponsors as he really should, however, the fact he had the accountability to cancel all future deals, private all NZXT promotions, and issue a formal apology to his fans is accountability that is also rarely seen in the content creator space.
I have found out from a few people who have posted about their experiences with shady sponsor spots in the past that a lot of the scummier ones will stipulate in the contract that your ad has to be up either indefinitely or for a certain duration, so they can put themselves in legal precarity by doing that. Just something to remember when somebody won't take down their old ads after a sponsor gets outed as doing scummy stuff. It's also worth noting that ad copy as a concept was not covered at all here. The reason all these creators were saying the same phrases is because they are required to go over certain things in their wording. NZXT wrote that wording and that'll be an important feature of any legal case that gets brought against this, tho tbh it's toeing the line enough that I don't expect much to happen.

Do you have a source for this? I'm swiss too and very curious to see if this stuff has been banned or something. I remember some rental services renting out Airpod Max's and stuff but now that you mention it I haven't seen such ads in a while.
Seeing tech jesus get pissed because he legitimately is upset that NZXT is scamming kids/vulnerable people is what true integrity looks like. It's not pretty but as a viewer its damn good to watch that passion. Never change Steve!
Most of them aren't really tech influencers, they're gaming influencers who know little to nothing about tech or business. Steve is fluent in both. It makes sense that he would call this out instantly and they would not. They should be politely notified about the nature of the product they are promoting, and if they do not stop AFTER that, they should be named and shamed.
Dear everyone: If you can't buy something upfront, instead of subscribing or renting it for less, it is more cost efficient to save and own in the long run. If you can't buy a 1000$ pc upfront, but can spend 100 $ each month, you can save the 100$ for ten months and then buy and own the PC forever. And with luck, by then, newer, shinier, better parts have already come out, giving you a better deal for your patience. As much as possible, renting isn't better than owning.
Steve, please never change. Your dedication to keeping the community of PC gaming and tech in check is sorely needed in a sea of creators who would shill out anything for a few extra dollars.
Wow! I'd paused four minutes in and had no idea how just how scuzzy it all is until I watched to the end. The ban is so appropriate! Snowflake should be very proud of Steve and the team!
If you can afford $120 a month for renting a PC just put that money in a shoebox every month and go buy a good gaming PC after a year. Or move that 120 every month into a savings account instead of NZXT’s account. Not only does the PC become yours after saving up $1500 (1 year). But you don’t have to keep paying after that one year! After that, you have a great brand new gaming PC that is forever yours. I think this by far is the most ridiculous thing that people don’t think about. Why are you paying Company 120 a month forever to rent a gaming PC temporarily, when you should be paying yourself that money temporarily (1 year) to own a gaming PC forever.
There is an alternative too. Build an AM4 APU build, dual channel 8GB RAM then wait(safe) for the GPU. At $500 it should be enough for light gaming CPU lasts longer in relevancy compared to GPUs anyway
Exactly! Or use a credit card or take out a small personal loan at credit union, bank, or loan shark, for $120 a month (not including interest). The fact that they prey on children or the less financially informed is down right horrible!
If you need to take out a loan or use a credit card, then you don't need to be buying a computer in the first place. If you can afford the monthly payment then why wouldn't you just save the money instead of owing the bank another $450 in interest? And ya I'm assuming your interest rate is 30% to be dumb enough to tell people to use loans or credit cards 😂 The poor stay poor and blame the rich for their own stupidity, istg 😂
Sound logic, makes perfect sense. However, I’ve been binge watching Caleb Hammer and my main takeaway is some people are simply incapable of delayed gratification. In fact I first learned about this subscription service from a Caleb Hammer guest.
And if you need the computer immediately, purchase a used laptop or something with $120 to get you through ~3 months, then spend $360 on another used device to get you through a year, then spend the $1440 to build a new PC. Done.
Na. Steve should know better. It needs to be sent in by written letter. Within 60days. Steve you silly, silly. This video is but a mark on your character, as a fool.
Steve and his team are amazing. I don’t doubt that during the recording where that line was shot and this video being uploaded, they probably sent out a strong legal letter. Long before anyone laid eyes on this video and you made that comment. Even if they didn’t, so what? NZXT and co. gets to make millions scamming people but god forbid Steve decides not to work with them? Is he forced to? Don’t tell me yes because “Hurr durr contracts”.
Let's protest with our money. I'll add NZXT to the list of product I don't buy as a PC hobbyist. Asus, Nvidia and NZXT are on my do not buy list until they can prove consumer friendly practices which to this date has not happen.
@@rahorin I would not buy from them regardless of ethics, they all offer very poor value. Something about being number one on the market which spawns better or equivalent products for cheaper from your competition.
Great video. Thank you so much for the hard work and dedication to us and the PC world. This is the type of solid stuff I need to reference as a husband and father with very little time to do this kind of in depth due diligence concerning these manufacturers. I personally would never do a rental thing to begin with. But I do enjoy DIY custom building my own stuff so it’ll be nice to cross this company off my list of potential parts purchasing in the future. God bless you guys and keep it up! Will definitely support through your store whenever possible 🙏
I remember my sister getting a PC from one of those 1-800 rent to own pc scams in the 90s. She ended up paying 2500$ for an hp pavillion. Here we are 30 years later, and they actually managed to make the scam even worse lol.
The brick and mortars were just as bad. My first pc was a dell dimmension 2400 and getting it from a rent to own type place it ended up costing like 4grand was close to 6 total with having to send it in for repairs 3 times only one even caused by us :\.. i think they minute the interest better a but now but they're still pretty awful. I don't remember what kind it was but a few years ago brother in law by l bought one that was around 1200 i think and it ended up about 2k when he finished paying it off. Last time i looked at one was for a switch and it was hysterical. Edit. With the first pc it was mid 2000s i think 05'. And since I'm still salty about it punks literally lied about the ram they told us it would have 512mb 2x256 it has 2x128 lol
Enh, this way they have a chance to cancel their own contracts with NZXT and make a video saying "actually, don't do that." Let them have a chance to be better (and more importantly, show their audience how to improve after making a mistake). If they don't take it, _then_ make your list.
Nah, if it would help to shame them, it would be a good idea to put their names on here. But in 90% of the cases, these kind of influencers get a bigger name and eventually only benefit from being shamed.
I'm only half way through the video and already Agreed, we will get the usual bla bla statement from these influences soon saying they where misled by NZXT amd they are sorry and will do more due diligence... even though they where handed a script to say word for word and then given huge sums of money and they just parrot out the lines. Influences need to be held accountable too, they should have spent 5 minutes on the website and seen the bait and switch. Its like the saying "hopes and prayers to the family, we can't talk about this during these hard times out of respect for their space" Either NZXT is going to be sold quickly and whoever gets the steaming pile will go bust soon or NZXT will be sold for penny on the dollar and liquidated and some unrealated person will get the debt while the real c suite people run into the distance free. I hope I'm wrong.
But they won't be because people who follow them won't watch GN. The influencers don't care about what they'll do to PC building business they only want the bag and free stuff from NZXT. In my opinion if NZXT will be sued they should be included in the lawsuit because they knowingly spread the scam.
You realize NZXT lied to and manipulated everyone who promoted this. You want to retroactively hold people accountable for something they believed was actually a good deal and promoted to their audience because, 1: they got paid. 2: They believed in the message and that's why they accepted the sponsorship. Before you watched this video you weren't even aware of this issue. Now you want to "descend upon thine evil in this world" as the "high and mighty enlightened viewer" and attack the wrong people. NZXT is the problem. Not the channels that accepted the partnership. Good luck attacking Jayztwocents then because years ago he promoted NZXT. You have no logic. You just want to attack everyone but the company that caused the issue.
Going public has become the equivalent of ruin the company in the long run. The stimulus of stocks steer every company into the ground when looking at the long term in favor of short term max profits
I dont know if people already noted this but : - Send it back with enough protection and stuff for ensuring good shipping back, on your responsibility, - Must be packed as original packaging, even if it have 72 start peanuts in it, : they only have to send it to you in a poorly protected packaging then it's checkmate, you can't both protect it correctly, and also send it back in original packaging.
Saw this, these guys are shit, their AIOs are crap, their cases are trash. Honestly, I do NOT recommend NZXT for anyone. I don't even consider them a viable company.
24:17 *ROASTED.* Using the F word sparingly gives it so much more power. It was absolutely 100% warranted here, Steve. Update: they didn't just get roasted, their remains got charred. What GN did at 58:11 was the ultimate baller move.

Hopefully a comment like this isn't used as evidence of defamation by NzXT in court. But they don't really have a case anyways

Even on a tight budget, I was able to build a solid mid-range gaming PC by buying one component every paycheck. It's very doable and rewarding if ya got the patience
You wasted %100 of the SSD througput since the data throughput from gen 3 to 4 is twice that of gen 3. So match up gen 4 mobo with gen 4 SSD. PCIE 4 GPU slot and only using a PICE 3 GPU? Wasted money. Standards have to match.

You're being warned now: are you prepared to go to court?
No, most people won't. The majority of humanity is weak, unhealthy, and afraid of everything but the abusive relationship this type of society breeds. From politics, religion, and business (of any kind), humanity would rather live in a convenient abusive and manipulative society than realize we let it happen and it must change. Social media gives us a "voice" and no one really cares. It's genius from a behavior change perspective.
If we lived in a great society, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. It would be something that just wouldn't happen in society. However, the vast majority of humanity would need to take a drastic turn. To the point I think you'd literally have to be in a completely different alternate reality to even fathom it could happen
People are just as obsessed with power and money as the rulers above them.
Just went to NZXT site, when on the default USA localisation it offers the scam rentals described in this video, changing to my native UK, all rental options are gone!
Likely this is because of the stronger consumer protections we have - don't get scammed Americans!
Yup, I know UK is outside of EU, but the laws are fairly similar, and half of that contract are direct quotes from the list of abusive clauses 🙄
No its because they dont have their new "partner"(the one who allows them to fire their RMA department) operating in the UK.

At $500 it should be enough for light gaming
CPU lasts longer in relevancy compared to GPUs anyway
And ya I'm assuming your interest rate is 30% to be dumb enough to tell people to use loans or credit cards 😂
The poor stay poor and blame the rich for their own stupidity, istg 😂
Sound logic, makes perfect sense. However, I’ve been binge watching Caleb Hammer and my main takeaway is some people are simply incapable of delayed gratification. In fact I first learned about this subscription service from a Caleb Hammer guest.
And if you need the computer immediately, purchase a used laptop or something with $120 to get you through ~3 months, then spend $360 on another used device to get you through a year, then spend the $1440 to build a new PC. Done.
"NZXT has been notified... Now!"
Oof, the burn. That was fire!
@@TheDiner50 I'm sure he sent the letter and timed to to be delivered on date of publication of the video. He didn't mean literally in the video.
@@TheDiner50 And this video is ALSO a mark on NZXT's character, as a greedy scam.
It was better handled than how NZXT handled firing it’s staff.
Holy shit that's scummy! Thank you for your vigilance and work exposing this, Steve.
That's absolute garbage but it's still rent to own unlike this bs.
You should also have a list of "Influencers", who advertised the service. They are not blameless and receive monetary gains.
I mean commenters could that now:
Zachtechtuffs
I know carterpcs is one. Just another reason I hate the guy.
Enh, this way they have a chance to cancel their own contracts with NZXT and make a video saying "actually, don't do that."
Let them have a chance to be better (and more importantly, show their audience how to improve after making a mistake). If they don't take it, _then_ make your list.
Ztt builds
Nah, if it would help to shame them, it would be a good idea to put their names on here. But in 90% of the cases, these kind of influencers get a bigger name and eventually only benefit from being shamed.
Every single influencer in the video should be held accountable for this bullshit.
Its like the saying "hopes and prayers to the family, we can't talk about this during these hard times out of respect for their space"
Either NZXT is going to be sold quickly and whoever gets the steaming pile will go bust soon or NZXT will be sold for penny on the dollar and liquidated and some unrealated person will get the debt while the real c suite people run into the distance free.
Zach deleted his short
They need to address this
He's too busy giving shit advice @@randyneves9701
Going public has become the equivalent of ruin the company in the long run. The stimulus of stocks steer every company into the ground when looking at the long term in favor of short term max profits
I dont know if people already noted this but :
- Send it back with enough protection and stuff for ensuring good shipping back, on your responsibility,
- Must be packed as original packaging, even if it have 72 start peanuts in it,
: they only have to send it to you in a poorly protected packaging
then it's checkmate, you can't both protect it correctly, and also send it back in original packaging.
Only in USA, that shit wouldn't be even be close to enforceable in europe :)
you can xD
you put it how it was at the start, and then put that package inside an good protected one
excellent point
Saw this, these guys are shit, their AIOs are crap, their cases are trash.
Honestly, I do NOT recommend NZXT for anyone. I don't even consider them a viable company.
@@schwingedeshaehers literally thinking outside of the box
24:17 *ROASTED.* Using the F word sparingly gives it so much more power. It was absolutely 100% warranted here, Steve.
Update: they didn't just get roasted, their remains got charred. What GN did at 58:11 was the ultimate baller move.
my fave part is that it wasn't engraved, just had a sticker pasted on. because that's all that these scumbags deserve
If you rearrange the words to "Most Unethical, Dishonest, Corrupt, Repulsive, Amoral, Predatory, Shady" it's acronym is MUDCRAP - make of this what you want.
Never buying from NZXT again. They were my go to for everything and always bought their cases over anything else. No more...
Fractal Design is decent.
Same I'm done with them
@@mindhackz Yeah I was going to suggest Fractal if Karim likes their styling. Had great experience with Fractal tech support during Covid parts shortage. (needed a new front panel for a Node 202 case and got it from their own stock despite shortage in the official store).
I personally love be quiet! stuff.
Been buying NZXT for over a decade. Never again. Sad day for a once great product.
When i was building my pc I almost bought a nzxt case and Mobo and before that I was considering a month to month. Your videos breaking down the cases warned me away from them and I'm really thankful. Keep up the good work
