CAT really did a great job with "Shake Hands With Danger" video. It is a timeless classic that is every bit as applicable for today's technicians as well.
I remember being on a job sites and having the medical personal jump out automatically wearing hard hats. These are great videos, they use real world situations, people can still learn from these, to bad they don’t play them anymore.
It’s 2:44am and I’m starting an old safety video about a field I don’t work in 😂 The lessons do apply somewhat universally though. Just not the solutions.
Don't ask me why, but these were interesting films. Shows what can happen if you get careless with heavy equipment or put yourself in situations you shouldn't be in. And man, I still find myself looking at these old Caterpillar videos off and on because not one of them are boring. Can't go one year without watching.
I've been looking for this film for around 20 years, I can't believe I've finally found it!! As a kid I always loved heavy machinery and remember watching this along with "Shake Hands with Danger" & "Red: The Color of Danger" on repeat when I was around 8-10 years old. It brought a happy tear to my eye to finally watch it again after all those years! Thank you for the upload!
I am so glad you were able to find it! I was in college before I saw "Shake Hands with Danger" for the first time but these are truly some classic safety videos!
And just for anyone interested, here is a link to the "Color of Danger" video you referenced. ruclips.net/video/Ix7Oqn0PAKc/видео.html Another great safety video.
We saw these videos as a young man , apprentices. In 1976 I began working at our Cat Dealer. Wow those made a huge impression and always came to mind when doing the work. Also we worked with older qualified mechanics that taught us safe procedures and we knew our risks before starting work. Flat level ground. Block tracks or wheels engage articulation lock. First hand experience from seasoned men we respected. Im 66 now just retired and still have all my fingers and never broke any bones or had a machine fall off unsafe stands. Proper cribbing or steel stands or I don’t go under that machine. I taught others the same as I was. Todays young guys get computer training. Omg those programs don’t teach the physical reality. The young are scared to ask at times. Please you guys don’t hesitate to ask if your not familiar with a task. No one would fault you but praise you for being SMART. Your life or others depends on it. We all wanna go home safe so don’t hesitate to ask. The more you learn the safer it gets but still new tasks need to be thought through carefully ! Never forget how fast things can change !!!!
Thanks for sharing and thanks for the advice for new technicians, or any worker for that matter. You are right, it is far better to ask than to make a foolish mistake that can have life long consequences. I know training has changed and your right, there is far more computer training, but you might be glad to know that in the heavy equipment program I teach the high school kids still see great safety videos like this and Shaking Hands with Danger. These safety videos share a timeless message and are still a favorite among the students.
Wow, really good channel dude. It's always nice to see actual mechanics channel's and not BS custom or sponsored stuff. I subbed for all the air brake stuff, that's gold and I have a few young guys that need to see it.
Thanks I appreciate it. I have been teaching Heavy Equipment/Diesel mechanics for 15+ years and put this channel together to help our students. Glad to hear it is useful for others as well.
If a wasp enter the cabin while you're inside, you: A. Slap wildly around to try to shoo the wasp out. B. Leave the cabin kicking & screaming. C. Ask your coworkers for help. D. Amputate an arm or two.
Alcohol and equipment just don't mix. Those guys knew he wasn't doing good. Bob knew he wasn't doing good. The foreman should have paid more attention to Bob's condition. Or better still, Bob should have just called in sick. Better safe than sorry. Life, health is more important than a few measly dollars.
on the job, if you followed every safety rule to the letter, you would not meet production quotas, but experience helps you learn which rules can be cut. its one of the workplace hipocrisies we have to endure.
Yes, he probably would have survived if he stayed in the center but it is hard to imagine what one will do when they panic. I am sure his instinct was to try to get away from the machine.
I see no5 too often, that pipe is too heavy for the counter weight. Having the tracks horizontal instead of vertical. If you think you can pull it off you can't. Keeping the load close to the ground is okay but still risky
While I agree with you that a crane might be better suited for setting manhole sections, the reality is it is almost always done with an excavator. They typically don't move the excavator out after digging the hole, to move a crane in and set the sections, and then swap the crane with an excavator again to backfill. The whole job can safely be done with an excavator and modern excavators do have load lift charts to indicate how much can safely be lifted in various positions.
ever since i stumbled upon "shake hands with danger" ive been bingewatching old caterpillar safety videos XD

Me too
Same here
Same
Me also
Man, some people really tend to shake hands with danger!
Guess they didn't keep safety on the move.
What year was this?
@@mattbartolovich8228 Not sure of the exact year but sometime in the 1980s.
I look right at the angle grinder when using it

“Is there a way we can wreck these old machines and claim the value back as a business expense…?”
“We could make a safety movie.”

I like how they used these videos to instill safe practices into workers.

Wish I could go back in time and live that era.
I love these old school videos! No politics or reality tv garbage- just plain truth.
So you miss the good old days when TV was, *check notes* machinery instructional videos?
@@agoo7581 Lol, I wish there was such a time. Maybe episodes of the A-Team partially qualify as instructional videos.
@@agoo7581Modern TV would objectively be better if they played machinery instructional videos.
Unbelievable how old these guys look and they are only in their forties.
that's what abuse of cigarettes and alcohol will do to you
@oliviersavard8676 The narrator said all 6 men were healthy physically and mentally.
I can remember seeing this film in the mid seventys.

I got all six answers wrong. WHOOHOO!!! I can work for Caterpillar.
I mean, yeah, you can work **for** Caterpillar, but you shouldn't work **with** a Caterpillar !
Is it just me or does the narrator sort of sound like rod sterling from the twilight zone

if only these guys heard a guitar riff every time they were about to do something stupid
Thanks for posting this
No problem!
I guess fred perdue was still a cowboy!

18:16 What is that red car? Love the shape.
Looks like a Buick Century, maybe 1975.
@@samsmith3025 You're right, thanks.
Hate how 2nd question, the one the lowboy didn't have "D. All of the above" as a choice, makes an unfair trick out of it.
That makes me upset that Bob got drunk before running the scraper and still hungover during the day.

@EricCox4848 we can afford to lose money but we can't afford to lose human lives
18:23 anybody know what car that is?? Is that an old Plymouth or dodge? Looks awesome I’ve never seen that
Buick Regal, same as the car in Kojak.
Where’s your seat belt harry?
What year was this 78…79? Looks older, but all these films were old for their time.
Ever kid should love sports and fishing not me I loved the big machines.
In what year was that was from? @Jim Mack? Way back then?
That is a great question. I am not completely sure but I would guess it is from the late 1970's.
The destroyed that whole machine for this video woah
Too bad Chuck Hamlin wasn't around to change out the O-rings; that might've made the difference in some of these accidents.
All of the answers today are all of the above and then some

Although these videos can be corny they aren't wrong stay safe brothers
Well said.
I’m pretty sure this was released after 1975
Also at 19:49 scraper is moving too fast around other equipment
That is true although back in that day it probably earned the operator a raise instead of a safety violation.
Nice vidéo..very bad luck..😶😶😅🤗🌟
Thought I saw Harry get hurt in another video 🤔
What year was film?
when was this made?
12:26 Tell me, why in gods name did the guy dodge under the wheel? He could have easily survived this, had he gone under the machine.
Yes, he probably would have survived if he stayed in the center but it is hard to imagine what one will do when they panic. I am sure his instinct was to try to get away from the machine.
I got the last one wrong, I thought they should have checked the weight limit of the waitress…
At 18:16 he stole that Buick from Kojak…

at 16:41 thats not the only problem, that job is for a CRANE, not an excavator!!, the bucket is for digging!!!! NOT lifting loads by cables.

Do actors actually die?
Choices? oh my goodness people make choices? Today it is all chemical imbalances a magical pill can fix.
At least Red was wearing that paper Covid mask for protection when he rolled over the hill.
