I do agree: focusing on the functions of modal verbs is absolutely outstanding both with teaching and learning English as a foreign language.Thank you!
Great video Gideon and everything in here is spot on according to a 60+ year native speaker. On the subject of shall/will, I think it has changed a bit in modern usage, but certainly for an older person, the word 'shall' means a certainly, whereas 'will' means an intention. "I shall return" means it's certain that I will return. "I will return" means that it's my intention to return. If I say "I'll be back" it means "I will be back" meaning it's my intention. When the terminator says "I'll be back" then mentally I assume he's saying "I shall be back" meaning it's unavoidable !!!
It MUST HAVE been love, but its over now Infinite greetings from this side of the planet, thank you so much sr, I should have watched this video long before.

My favourite teacher, you have told lies a little bit about Spanish verb. On the whole, the Spanish language is considered the easiest of the European languages, and as for Spanish verbs system, it is much easier to learn than the English verbs system. Though, you are still my favourite English teacher. You're the best. None can contend with you.
The best way to learn Eng after you had upgrade some basic grammar is to READ a LOT different kind of topics , novels with bundle of conversational and so on . Also want to gratuliere LetThemTalkTV for his immense contribution about better grasping english grammar .
I am a native English speaker, but based on my experience with other languages I think that the guidelines Gideon gives are fantastic. When you immerse yourself into speaking with english natives you will learn a lot faster if you are aware of his comments.
Mr.Gideon, you are an awesome teacher. I now know everytthing about these beautiful but sometimes confusing verbs. A million thanks again, again and again.
You have got a very beautiful way of explaining things! Hats off for putting in alot of effort to make english lessons easy to learn. Thanks Teacher. ❤
I love your lessons, sir.Words can't describe how thankful I am. You are a perfect teacher, not only are you brilliant but also you are so amusing. Great job!!!
Hello, Mr. Gideon. Your ways of teaching are one of a kind. I love your RUclips channel and I am always looking forward to watching your videos day after day. May you continue to be passionate about your work. Your teaching method is unique and always catches my attention. Stay mellow with appreciation - Rommel.

You are such an amazing teacher and your video lessons are very well done. It is pretty clear how much effort you put on them and how much you enjoy doing it as well. Many thanks !
@@LetThemTalkTV....'You are right. It's a lot of effort, but I enjoy it.' Or the use of the semi-colon: 'You are right; it's a lot of effort, but I enjoy it'. Or the use of the dash: You are right - it's a lot of effort, but I enjoy it'. Any of these would be better than the construction shown above. Regrettably, nowadays we live in a world of lack of punctuation, especially in the different forms of social media. The sense may be there, but it is not appropriate for a teacher of English.
Excellent way of teaching. All these very clear examples presented with the suitable facial expressions and intonations eases understanding and helps memorization, while making the videos itself entertaining and fun to watch.
There are exceptions, dear Teacher! I speak Portuguese as a mother tongue, however, I have never been obsessed with verbs. I understand what you said though. Yes, my fellow counterparts are obsessed with verbs when it comes to learn another language. Can't blame them though. That's how we were taught at school since early age.
I might have offered you a cup of tea for this descriptive video if you were with me. Powerful explanation with funny examples. Introduction was funny as well.
Hi, Gideon. Your videos are wonderful and your example sentences are hilarious :D hilarious and memorable. Would you please make a video about S and Z ending sounds at the end of words such as "says", "pays", "comes"? It'd be extremely helpful.
Thanks a lot for this crystal clear lesson. I shall come back to it a couple of times to assimilate as much as my brains permit me. I am so grateful that English is the world's lingua franca we all have to learn. Why..? Because my madre lingua happens to be Spanish, which is way too complicated by comparision as you may know. Spanish grammar makes me feel learning English a relief. Life is good..!
New subscriber. So pleased to be here. My new favourite after Benjamin McEvoy who is an Oxford grad but has instilled a love of long enjoyed Classical literature.
Enthusiastic class full of precious insights, I would like to repay you Gideon for your time spent keeping us learning grammar with his wonderful teaching.. ❤️Thanks again
I learned a lot of this by example, from my parents’ speech and from reading. I also picked up some usage that is considered quaint now in American English, like “should you come across that letter, please send me a copy”, “shall we go”, etc., these are becoming more and more rare in speech here. I also still use only may for permission, not can. Some interesting aspects of English are those gender differences I noticed between the softer, more polite usages of women of my Mom’s generation, and mine (born 1960), and the stronger, more decisive structures of my Father’s. We might say, “I’d really like to” instead of my Dad’s much stronger “I have decided to”. Or “would you mind cleaning the floor next, please?”, instead of “next, clean the floor”. It’s especially tricky for us to use the imperative, this was a no-no for females. With non-native English speakers, the question forms like “would you mind doing” are confusing, so they often answer no, meaning “no, I didn’t do that”. So, it’s become more important for us older women to adjust to using the imperative, with our large population of non-native, very partial, English speakers, who make up most of the work force. My wealthy, educated California county’s population doubles on workdays, when immigrant workers commute in to work at low-paying jobs, mostly domestic and unskilled construction, they can’t afford to live here, sadly. The state is really dividing into two classes: a mostly European-origin (some East Asian) with higher education, doing the white-collar, highly-paid work and a second group of uneducated, mostly Hispanic immigrants with no or little English, making up the majority of the low-paid blue-collar and service workforce. Well-educated Hispanics who know basic English can jump right into the upper class. Truly upper-class people, in terms of wealth, are here but keep an extremely low profile, they don’t want to stand out in any way.
The material discussed in this video is not rocket science and yet I watched the whole video because there are so many gems amongst the examples that you give are, for example, “You should try the tofu fricasé”; that put a smile on my face.
Hi Gideon. You could,may//might/should/would be an excellent actor, you’ve got a big talent in acting,I love watching at you.By the way, thanks for not interrupting the lesson with this loudly music (Haha!)

You put all possible efforts to describe the beauty of your pedagogy ... i must say you are a scientist of english language. No offence sir, 2 years ago i used to hate your teaching methods.. but now i need only you to get the end result.... thank you so much.🤝
Thank you for this video. It´s the more usefull video about modality I have found so far. There is something I´d like to know; one of the rules for modal verbs is that they are always followed by a regular verb in the infinitive without to be. So, can´t I use a non-modal irregular verb after a modal verb? You´re an awesome teacher.
Forget the linguistic stuff, your comic preludes are absolutely epic. 👏🏻👍🏻 Now I know why your videos always remind me of the Young Frankenstein and the Abby Normal scene.
You can't only use shall for predictions in the first person. For example the famous phrase "you shall not pass!" is a valid English phrase. "they shall not pass!" is also a famous phrase.
