I own Santalum (Indy boot style) in dark brown and Txture (perforated cap toe) in sort of vegetable tan. Both are MTOs and Santalum has the best leather, mold nicely and basically my most comfortable boots. Txture is quite stiff and hard to break in. Bought them at least 5 years ago, can’t really remember but I do remember spending not more than $400 on both. As someone who owned Timberland and Docs, I would say Santalum and Txture are far more superior in term of built qualities.
On the downside, I agree with Nick. Communication can be pain in the rear with these guys, and this coming from a Malaysian who are married to an Indonesian. I’ve specifically mentioned to both that I wanted dainite and both ended up with commando sole. Txture sent me a vegetable tan which I’ve ordered in dark brown, plus one of the Santalum ring holes came in different color. It was off putting at first but the imperfections just grow on me. One way or another, it add characters.
In a nutshell, Indonesian boots are on the same level, and to certain extend outmatched well-known brands. The pricing is unbeatable for such qualities (prices might have gone up by now) and variety of styles to choose from.
For those who are not based in either Jakarta or Bandung, and interested to buy these boots with a peace of mind, I would suggest that you just buy flight ticket to either cities and go directly to the ateliers.

If you get txture, don’t get local leathers. As for which is the best, it depends on what you want. Onderhoud is pretty overwhelmed, but his work with shell is the best generally. Winson is the best dress shoe maker. Sagara is the best boot maker, followed by Benzein. Txture has wild patterns, but is certainly not better than onderhoud; I’d likely place them at the bottom. Renav has great patterns, but their sizing is really all over the place.

Do you know of any companies that will make a custom/customized Zero Drop boot? Since we're on the topic of custom work.
They are NOT for everyone for several reasons, however there are some very positive upsides for those who can wear and adapt to a zero drop or minimalist style. Personally, I've been making a transition to zero drop boots and shoes and I'm having a very difficult time finding anyone who makes traditional or rugged boots in a zero drop style. Currently using Xero Shoes Melborn design for daily use and work purposes, however the minimalist outsole used leaves me wanting a more solid platform. The merger of Bedrock sandals outsole and platform applied to a traditional leather upper is something id love to find someday.

Sadly (as of Feb 2024) many of these mentioned seemed to have cased operations. Benzein's instagram has gone dark, and Santalum it seems not responsive (even to new orders). I actually live in Indonesia and was fortunate to have an absolutely beautiful pair of bespoke shoes with a fiddle-waist made by Santalum many years ago. I had them in natural leather soles and they lasted a long time - just two months ago I sent them for re-soling.
Txture was very responsive as of ~12 months ago, but I haven't dealt with them again since. I may try to order something from them.
I'm curious about Winson and will be investigating because their shoes are absolutely gorgeous.

Awesome list Nick! Did Eugenio have his order from Indonesia shipped directly to Manila, or did he use a cross-border delivery service? Import taxes for orders entering the Philippines are huge, but there are delivery services that are allowed to charge only fixed fees for shipments based on the weight of the package. I use similar services for my US purchases, and I’m wondering if Indonesia has comparable services.

I’m looking for the best custom firefighting boot. I am interested in out of the box thinking.
Maybe some “exotic” leather that would be better than cowhide (kangaroo, stingray, etc).
I’m interested in moccasin vs PNW (like Whites or Franks which is who I’m in talks with).
I’m willing to pay for what I want, any advice is welcome.

@@Stridewise likewise. Cordovan is all well and good, but that is "just" a specialized kind of horsehide. What about regular horsehide? I also found a mexican company that offers to make shoes in horsehide or other hides. They have a web site and the price seems nice, but I haven't found much about them elsewhere...

Shout-out from Indonesia.. in my opinion, that price range (>$120) for average indonesian is considered as high end products because it's almost half our monthly salary. Definitely will try buying one someday..

Also, its true 😂, it might be a little shady, but contacting the boot makers directly here in Indonesia is much more efficient, faster, and Indonesian locals are actually honest folk. I mean we were colonized and basically forced to make these boots as hard labors, yet we still kept on making them, and perfecting the craft so yea all love.

@@georgecarlin2879 I ordered two sets of 3 shoes. You know they offer the 3 for the price of 2. A great deal. I had asked them about sizing a quadrillion times because I was making a huge order. They said true to size. So I went with my Brannock device. Needless to say the first order showed up they were small so I emailed them to hold the second order because of the sizing but they never responded. For like weeks. Well I sure as hell didn’t want 3 more shoes that were too small. so after a daily email with no response I went to my Amex and had them canceled. Then I heard from them.
They said they had a server issue and couldn’t see emails. I don’t know. Long story longer I cancelled the second order because I ordered the similar design from different manufacturers. The first order I tried like hell to break in and stretch so they were no good to return or to me. We have emailed back and forth and they say they will refund me half my money for the first order which I found fair.it was what I had asked for in one of my emails.
The shoes are great quality. The leather feels fantastic. I actually want to send a pair to rose anvil.
If you order some- I will again- order your sneaker size or at least a half size up on the brannock. If you even think you might be wide get the E.
