Why Turkey's 1000-Year-Old Handwoven Carpet Industry Is Struggling
I sadly don’t think that’s only Covid that makes this industry struggle. It’s also the lack of appreciation of a generation raised with the “buy cheap-throw away-buy new one” mentality. What most people don’t know is the fact that some of these handwoven rugs are handed down from generation to generation and can survive hundreds of years. Please don’t even compare it to industrially made, cheap store carpets, it’s an insult to the century-long tradition of carpet-making.

Fast fashion vs slow fashion. It's about lifestyle.
Young people moves a lot, so the tendency is fast fashion, while older (30+) start to settle and buy things with better quality.

Not that the people making these carpets don't deserve adequate wages for their work but it is ridiculously expensive for the average person of this generation to buy these things when there's a lack of jobs, a need for higher education, lower wages, student debt, inadequate Healthcare and a dying planet I don't think keeping up an international rug industry is this generations priority

An entire year to make the rug, & they only get UP TO $4,000??? It should be at least 20 grand or more...what amazing work to be given so cheaply. If I had the money, I'd buy one right now. Beautiful artwork! Obviously, a product is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. I'm just saying it's a shame all those hours of work (a YEAR to make!) don't equal a fair profit.

Turkey is in the middle of a currency crisis where lira lost value against American dollar. 1 USD was 1.2 Turkish lira when I was in high school. For today it’s 8.5 Turkish liras.
My mom has one of these carpets. $10,000.

Most beautiful country with the nicest people and the most delicious food. I was fortunate to visit turkey and I will always go there. These are the qualities found every Muslim country and our visitors are mostly from Europe.

Okay so based on the comments i just want to add something, ofcourse you can go buy a carpet for 5 -10 dollars and ofcourse the usage of them is same but the difference here is pleasure, for certain people life is about pleasure like you can grab a coffee from starbucks for 3 dollars but it gave them much more pleasure to brew the coffee to go out of their way to experience new tastes, or food you can order a burger for 3 dollars but some people travel the world just to taste certain foods or even music and collecting vinals its about having a vision , tasting -feeling the culture its about enjoying the meaning, as a turkish person this carpet means much more than a decoration to me personally, it is much more valuable than 10 k, at the end of the day you are the one that shapes the meaning of worth and for the people out there who appreciate tradition , hard work , culture different types of beauties this is honestly a jem. So it could be so hard to understand that a carpet could coast more than 10 k but for the people who breath culture for all their lives and who has a hunger for pleasure which comes through life these carpets are honestly much more valuable than green papers.

For me its more tha fact that a machine can do it even better for much much less money so why would you give so much money for something that is worse.
Thanks! 👏🏼 people do not understand that our own cultural rugs are meaningful for us than a normal rug. It is also very trendy now a days. People are not questioned if someone buys million dollar cars but are questioning 10k rugs. They need to learn that we are proud of our cultural gifts, and even if it’s expensive we know its worth.
However these rugs are looked down on in many Turkish places because it is “old” or not “modern enough” which is a total lie. These rugs can be very modern fitting if you know how to style your house. Small Turkish handmade rugs can be very modern to have around with antique furnitures. If you don’t know it’s worth, you wouldn’t find it suiting too.
@@krselj who decides which is worse? and besides like I said it is much more meaningful than a simple decoration but as far as quality goes these carpets lasts for multiple generations and generations so as far as taste goes I cannot comment on that, everyone has a different taste but as far as quality goes these carpets are priceless and they proved their quality over and over again for multiple decades.

These women are true artists keeping alive a craft that has been passed down for generations. I just returned from a tour of Turkey, and was fortunate enough to see these artisans in action….even had a chance to tie a knot or two. I learned that Turkish rugs differ from others in that they use a double knot rather than a single. It was a priceless experience. I was so fortunate to be able to purchase one of these gorgeous works of art. 💕

That last woman, who was describing her pride in her work “with enthusiasm “ and “affection” sums it all up for me. I would gladly pay these beautiful, talented women to make a rug for me. Thank you for teaching my history. I meant those nations lived together and the culture was born. Also Bulgarians, Armenians, Kurds, Cherkess and all the ethnicities still live in Turkey and we call ourselves Turks overall. I didn’t assert that culture is %100 Uyghur Turkish but I see (as most of us) these ethnicities as Turkish too. I like the diversity comes within multicultural area. Have a good day :).

National memory is the most important thing of these carpets. More than 4000 years we were making kilims and if you look at the shapes on a kilim you can see a lot of shapes with sharp corners just like kokturk alphabet which is our first and original alphanet. And today still in modern Turkey you can see the kokturk/central asian/turanic motives on carpets and more. This is so important for us. When i get rich one day i will decorate my floors with these.

Actually these carpets shouldn't compare mass product's carpet. You have just watched knitting and selling part. Before the knitting these carpet's wood was being turned to ropes and these ropes was colored with natural dyes. Therefore, these carpets can't produce with machines.

İ am from Hereke and my mother also worked Like 25 years to make carpets i know how this work is so hard to make and lots of time to do.

What a beautiful craft! I think the reason the industry is shrinking is because people can't afford the cost. Plus...some of the designs look outdated...it's hard to keep up with "trends"....
