Yep, con is his dump stat, char is his neutral, and wis seems to be his best stat. Almost definitely an AC heavy cleric. He seems to multiclass into a paladin/fallen paladin.
In jy opinion, no. There’s Oath of Redemption Paladin. It comes with all of Naofumi’s abilities in the form of of its Extra Spells list. Paladin even has a bit of a “Rage Shield” via Flaming/Searing Smite.
Yeah no I think he would be a stone soul sorcerer. They gain an AC=13+ Constitution modifier, and proficiency with shields. This would also make him a charisma caster, which at first doesn’t make sense but then you remember that intimidation is a charisma skill and at the shield hero has to threaten people just to give him a fair price. Additionally you get access Stone Aegis to help protect your party members from damage. Then to help round out his shield magic you can multi class into lore bard for new spells and bonus proficiencies. Additionally you can take a quick dip into hex blade to get some fancy bonuses, and Eldridge blast which is the best thing ever, though not entirely in character. Next take the Tavern brawler feat to gain proficiency with improvised weapons, aka your shield. It will still only do 1D4 bludgeoning damage which is pretty in character. Additionally this will also give you proficiency with all improvised weapons, like a bottle of weed killer that he uses to kill the plant monster that was destroying a town. Then the inspiring leader feat, because while he starts gruff and intimidating he becomes a good leader, who shows compassion to his allies. I think his level breakdown should look something like this, Sorcerer(stone)=6, Warlock(hex blade)=4, Bard(lore)=10. As fore some of his spells, I would go with shield of faith as air shield.
I've actually sat down to try and make it before the Stone Sorc is exactly what I came up with as the best fit. When I designed him I actually placed his level at around 11 specifically to benefit from the Stone sorc ability gained at that level. tavern Brawler obviously, but I kept his class pure Stone Sorc, allowing me to flavor all his spells cast and his meta magics as his shield casting them, without needing to find a bullshit magical shield. Tavernbrawler keeps your physical attacks fairly weak except when using the level 11 ablity from stone sorc, which can be reflective of how some of his punches have managed to be pretty forceful, but still keeps him relying on others for true consistent damage aside from his shield
That’s a fair choice to keep him pure but then he wouldn’t have any healing spells. I think he would need to take a quick dip into a class in order to get some healing spells. I initially just wanted to get him up to at least lower board level six in order to get magical secrets so that he could use shield of faith. But I couldn’t help myself And took them all the way to 10 to get more magical secrets for more extra spells.
Rezero would make me very excited. He has Shamac, he was able to use a lesser fire spirit, and he can attract monsters. (And of course he can never die lol) Edit: Shamac was a shadow spell that was the only magic he learned so far in the anime and isn't the best at controlling it
In the light novel later it is revealed that raphtalia is not a commoner she is some kingdom's royalty so idk if it accurately shows a health of a commoner in shield hero
This video convinced me to watch shield hero and OH MY GOD BLAINE SIMPLE THANK YOU!!!!! Shield hero is easily the best anime I’ve ever watched! And I’m forever grateful!!
Great video. And thank you for the Iron Maiden D&D explanation! As it turns out, Artificers (the class I play) have access to all of those spells (though not until much higher levels), so I will definitely have those spells on hand for that combo when I really want a villain dead! Thanks again!
Personally, I'd go Fighter with that sweet sweet, Unarmed Fighting style and multiclass into Hex Blade Warlock with the Shield as both his patron and pact weapon.
I would love an RPG that uses some of the ideas from Shield Hero. The weapon upgrading and skill learning system sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'd really enjoy playing.
"Without the anime we wouldn't have the hub to give us stats" Well there is a manga too if you need an informative hub but the book gives plenty of info on his stats
There's much bigger problem. Naofumi's durability dont come from his health pool. He has abnormal dmg resistance. It was shown in the anime that he barely feels most of attacks(in sensory way). Which means that his healthpool is equiwalent much higher healthpool of normal character. You can see it in moments when attacks come through his defence.
@@BlaineSimple AD&D's HP's are inconsistent... but the average is not. Also (I'm a 1st & 2nd Ed dinosaur), higher levels (9th or 10th) drop the hit dice with modifiers and become a mere tiny HP's per level. You worked it well out here. The Shield Hero guy can be really low hit points and have access to a lot of amazing magic.
Interesting take on the #1 Dad. I tried building him myself and ultimately made him a multiclassed Eldritch Knight and Storm Herald Barbarian. Eldritch Knight so he could have his spells and be bonded to the shield, and Storm Herald Barb for the Storm Aura ability of desert that makes it so that when he goes into rage(Rage Shield), anyone close to him takes fire damage like what happened to Raphtalia in the zombie dragon fight.
I'd say it is used not additive, but at the same time, so it would be: Anime x D&D x Math = Nerd Stuff^3 ^^ Also, Naofumi's "venom shield" can use two venomous snakes on his opponent, he used that to blackmail someone in the Anime :)
OOh, that makes some sense. I'm not too familiar with paladin builds, but it fits with the theme of his summoning, and when not specific to a god, are based on raw emotions and ideological conviction, wen he has in spades, plus armor and martial weapon proficiency for his various shield types, smites can be his increased damage in rage mode, and they usually come with buffing and healing magic. My first instinct was a bard/barbarian multiclass. I think dividing the XP makes more sense cause his stats are supposed to be low relative to the others. But this for sure would work.
Smites are useless if you aren't going to use a weapon, and thats kind of what "Shield Hero" is all about. Also, protection is meh at best, defense is better and shield master feat kind of conflicts with protection. And then less access to spells.
Even in a D&D video Naofumi has his ever-resting "Im so done" bitch face....also the measurement skit actually got a chuckle outta me. Raphtalia gonna grow some shield heroes.
I haven't gotten far in the video yet but I'm pretty sure his starting HP is 150, not 156. Though the compression makes it hard to say, thanks Crunchyroll. And 167-156 isn't 25. Nor is 167-150. Oh also you forgot his Self Burning Curse.
Would definitely give him Hellish Rebuke and Fire Shield as part of his Curse/Wrath series shield, as it's shown multiple times that those close to him get burned while he's in shield rage mode (Fire Shield spell) and that he can retaliate against those who hit him by directing a burst of flame at them (Hellish Rebuke spell).
Thank you. The "Antipathy/ Sympathy" spell is almost exactly what I was looking for. I needed a spell that draws in large groups of targets to my character. If a tiny bit of homebrew is allowed, it would be ideal for my purposes. And by that, I mean, I'd like to cast the spell and have it on standby until I activate it, and at activation I can pick the targets. And I'd like to be able to choose new targets by adjusting the spell while it is still active.
I really liked this video Blaine! Well done- this is the 2nd video I've seen of yours, and I think you've earned another subscriber. I have to disagree with you somewhat on your build- and I will provide my own below, but overall I really enjoy your content. Keep up the good work! Personal Build Below: Alright, we all know how hard it is to make characters like their anime counterparts in D&D, but in this case I think I've got a good one for everyone: Hermit Background( or Criminal if you want to play a more rogue-like Naofumi) Variant Human(+1 to Intelligence, +1 to Wisdom) - (Feat: Shield Master) - (Skill: Perception / Athletics) 8 Levels Eldritch Knight Fighter 2 Levels Forge Cleric 10 Levels Abjuration Wizard (15,14,13,12,10,8) STR: 14 DEX: 10 CON: 12 INT: 15+1 WIS: 13+1 CHA: 8 Feats/ ASI's: (Eldritch Knight) 1: Shield Master - Obvious Reasons 4: Warcaster - Naofumi is a battle mage; this will keep you from losing your precious concentration spells 6: Heavy Armor Master(+1 STR(15) 8: Tavern Brawler(+1 STR(16) - Naofumi has to improvise with his shield a LOT, this will help deal SOME damage (Wizard) 4: +2 INT(18) 8: +2 INT(20) here's my justification - yes the War Wizard's ability to Arcane Deflect is a good one, but a Shield's job is to negate damage dealt to the party- and having a constantly re-charging pool of HP that constantly takes hits for you (aka- the Arcane Ward), and eventually your party - becomes infinitely more useful than being able to gain a +2 against a single attack roll or a +4 on a saving throw, especially when you can't apply that bonus to your allies. As for the 2 levels in Forge Cleric - Naofumi starts learning to Craft later in the Anime, and I wanted to have something there to mechanically support that. In addition- 2 levels of Cleric gives him access to Cure Wounds, Healing Word, and Shield of Faith- all tools in Naofumi's kit that he can use Wizard spell slots to up cast if need be. with Eldritch Knight Fighter- I highly recommend getting up to 8th level as soon as possible- the feats are worth it, and the 7th level "War Magic" ability is amazing for tanking when it is paired with "Blade Ward." Take the "Interception" fighting style from the new Class Feature's UA- and you can reduce incoming damage on a reaction if the target is within 5ft. - use your action to Blade Ward or Dodge, and use your Bonus Action for a shield-bash or a bonus action spell to keep your allies in the fight.
My man, Oath of Redemption Paladin has spells that are nearly perfect 1:1 versions of Naofumi’s abilities, and the subclass even focuses on protecting the group like he does.
ACTION ECONOMY!!! "use the creation spell and then use..." NOOOOO!!!!! That only gives us one action per round. His ultimate abilities would take too long to cast. Clearly the priest did not get a turn to save or react so your design is flawed. He is clearly a Bardaladin. He uses heal spells and wears armor. You can't do that as a wizard.
Thank you for the Video. Now i got a knew anime for my self to watch. I almost saw the whole first chapter and already cried of one awesome scene. Thank you again :)
@@BlaineSimple Agreed. When I DM'd, I allowed players to petition exceptional races and classes. I didn't approve of all of them. My favorite approval was a Fire Giant thief with the Human Form Mana Technique (my campaign world thing, Mana Techniques. Spellcasting fell into that among other things). He looked normal but was immune to fire and had extraordinary physical power. He wore a fake Ring of Fire Resistance and a fake Girdle of Fire Giant Strength. I added his Fire Giant abilities were curse-suppressed until a certain level. Also, like you, I allow all my players to translate their favorite media guy into AD&D as long as they give me a list of what they can do and the source material so I can translate it into AD&D gaming relative to the level we are playing. My players who wanted I-Man, various Terminators, Constantine (both Marvel Comics and the movie), Hellboy, Castlevania Belmonts (easiest translation ever), various vampires and lycanthropes, Star Trek guys, Star Wars guys, Gunslingers, and horror movie monster in hero form. Most of the character builds were easy, something I give back to the player as something his character gets. AD&D is a fantasy game, so fantasy things are easy if it's not a power-monger thing. The others are things I involved a growth tree that they make choices based upon level. One player saw my growth tree for what he wanted as his Batman character, he'd not have all of his abilities and perks until he was level 50 and had to maintain an INT score of 21 or higher all the time and he had to use my stat-rolling program until he rolled all the stats at 18 save for CHA, which had to be at least 12. Because he picked the hard path, he ended up finding my hiding path of needing to have an 18 CHA. Once he rolled all 18's, he sacrificed CHA to boost his INT to 21. That's a 1pt improvement by decreasing another by 2pts. Another who complained was a vampire player. To get the vampire he wanted, he'd have to be level 20. He wanted to be Lestat from Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned. I had Living Vampires in my campaign as a player character race. To be a vampire of his level, he'd have to pick in the development tree to take all the accelerate abilities, all of the sensuality abilities, undeath status, attacking while accelerating, all dodge abilities, all increased senses abilities, the buried regeneration ability, and the shared feeding ability. To be fair, he was the lame vampire. I created that tree on the fly with the Legacy of Kain video games, Castlevania (all of them), all Dracula movies, the only good Lost Boys movie (the first), Salem's Lot, Nosferatu, Vampire's Kiss (not a real vampire movie but a madness movie, it did inspire me), History of Vlad the Impaler (history of brutality and disease panic that inspired stories), Fright Night movies, etc. That gamer could have developed the character early to be a really good character in abilities and powers. He had options. No, he held out because he wanted Lestat. Summarizing. He wanted Lestat. He could have had Alucard (NES and later other video games) far earlier and developed his abilities. He could have had Blade (Marvel Comics) on all levels and bolstered him progressively. Nope. He wanted to be Lestat. The campaign did not progress long enough for his character to become a vampire like Lestat. And another... oh... I am ranting. Okay, you got the Shield Hero out of the way. I applaud how you did it, excellent to the max. I actually want you to submit this guy to the AD&D guys as a character build. Players who love the anime will struggle in the beginning and appreciate the abilities later.
Bard with Gamorweive Sheild from Eberron that is synced to what type of magic school you're using. His shield is his focus and his abilities are more about making the party stronger than himself; yes he can fight but it's mostly mundane damage. source: Ran this build two and a half years ago before the anime
Edit: Do you have any recommendation for someone who wants to learn about it? Dude, this vids are the reason i want to learn about D&D. I really want to try minmaxing a character xD
Honestly, my first thought was a Nature Domain Cleric, which is super amusing considering he got in fights with the church of the world, but it does make sense considering he's a sacred hero. He'd also work really well as a Paladin. On the flipside, if he HAD to be a mage I'd have gone with a Sorcerer with the divine soul aimed at nature domain.
To be fair, I’m pretty sure the rope shield was what unlocked air strike shield in the first place (don’t quote me, I’d have to rewatch it to confirm), so technically the rope shield IS one of his best shields, seeing on how it gave him his first (and by far most used) shield skill.

Proud of you~
You completely got 2 Spells wrong:
1. Wall of Stone was actually Wall of Force
2. Wall of Force was actually Leomund's Tiny Hut
I think that the 5e shield spell still pretty appropriately does the Sky Shield spell. As for the other one, a spell like Pathfinder's emergency force sphere would be a more appropriate spell.
Yeah, if anything that CR has taught us is that the mighty Leomund's Tiny Hut spell can pretty much stop ANY attacks from something even as powerful as an ANCIENT White Dragon... >:/

the combined armies of Genghis Khan couldn't get through that Hemisphere, and believe me they've tried. Go figure, nobody had prepared Dispel Magic.
Y'know, I asked about this in another 'how to play in D&D' just yesterday. You sir, have made my day.
Blaine your icecream machine is broken more often than a McDonald's icecream machine.
Come on, he’s an unarmed Life Cleric.
Forge Cleric gives him better ac though.
Yep, con is his dump stat, char is his neutral, and wis seems to be his best stat. Almost definitely an AC heavy cleric. He seems to multiclass into a paladin/fallen paladin.
I thought of Arcana Cleric or Forge Cleric even.
Stone Sorcerer is definitely a good choice too! I don't read too much into UA so didn't even know it existed lol
This video just introduced me to one of the greatest animes ever! Thanks a lot
I love the small instrumental of the first intro that you use in the background.
Just skimmed through your channel on a whim and I am positive I have finally struck gold
if im correct when naofumi joins with a slave/monster the monster/slave gets a boost in stats so your raftalia measurement might be off

Absolutely love the animation of these videos. There's just something appealing about it.
I'm watching shield hero now, I didn't even know this anime was a thing, thanks, bye!
Come back when you're done ^
What are you watching it on?
I'm back!
@@isaaceshleman2833 I watched on the crunchyroll app
Ah. Okay. Thanks.
OKAY, now I NEED to see what Maple would be like in D&D.
Rezero would make me very excited. He has Shamac, he was able to use a lesser fire spirit, and he can attract monsters. (And of course he can never die lol)
Edit: Shamac was a shadow spell that was the only magic he learned so far in the anime and isn't the best at controlling it
In the light novel later it is revealed that raphtalia is not a commoner she is some kingdom's royalty so idk if it accurately shows a health of a commoner in shield hero
I clicked as fast as I f***ing could, anime? D&D? YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Godspeed my friend
SAME!
This video convinced me to watch shield hero and OH MY GOD BLAINE SIMPLE THANK YOU!!!!! Shield hero is easily the best anime I’ve ever watched! And I’m forever grateful!!
Sadly it took me 45 mins to click your video... no... masterpiece
I love this show so much, I watched the whole thing in 2 days
One guy in My group wants to be like Naufomi, You Made his dream came true, thank You Blaine!
(Oh yeah, i founded another group).
Great video. And thank you for the Iron Maiden D&D explanation! As it turns out, Artificers (the class I play) have access to all of those spells (though not until much higher levels), so I will definitely have those spells on hand for that combo when I really want a villain dead! Thanks again!
'war magic ' shows a tank , so thats what it feels like a wizards wearing armor and use magic without penalty .
3:40 , it's amazing how you went thru all of that just to make it possible.
10/10
Personally, I'd go Fighter with that sweet sweet, Unarmed Fighting style and multiclass into Hex Blade Warlock with the Shield as both his patron and pact weapon.
He didnt lose his taste of food from losing his taste for the world. It was literally a curse placed on him.
Congrations, you are on time :)
you forgot about the clothes of anger that burn whoever attacks naofumi and frenzy of companion that buffs allies when he wears the wrath shield.
Shinza Bansho in DnD would be wild but hard to do.
Its insanely op so it would be nuts
I would love an RPG that uses some of the ideas from Shield Hero.
The weapon upgrading and skill learning system sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'd really enjoy playing.
"so go get yourselves done trauma kiddows"
*liszerine ad pops up*
Me:does that count?
I got dominos....
"Without the anime we wouldn't have the hub to give us stats"
Well there is a manga too if you need an informative hub but the book gives plenty of info on his stats
What happens if his health growth rate is inconsistant?
Then there's a much bigger problem at hand xD
There's much bigger problem. Naofumi's durability dont come from his health pool. He has abnormal dmg resistance. It was shown in the anime that he barely feels most of attacks(in sensory way). Which means that his healthpool is equiwalent much higher healthpool of normal character. You can see it in moments when attacks come through his defence.
It means rolling for health.
The Shield Hero guy can be really low hit points and have access to a lot of amazing magic.
i mean its still december
you're improving on your schedule
Nice job
Interesting take on the #1 Dad. I tried building him myself and ultimately made him a multiclassed Eldritch Knight and Storm Herald Barbarian. Eldritch Knight so he could have his spells and be bonded to the shield, and Storm Herald Barb for the Storm Aura ability of desert that makes it so that when he goes into rage(Rage Shield), anyone close to him takes fire damage like what happened to Raphtalia in the zombie dragon fight.
7:40 he literally spent a full night experimenting
Came here expecting a shield master-type build. Left with a new anime to watch. Thanks!
Actually when he read the book it was about the other heros and the shield hero part was blank
The whole “changing a plant” thing actually took him an entire night, not just a few seconds
This is the nerdyest thing I have ever seen I love it
Anime=nerd stuff
Math=nerd stuff
D&D=nerd stuff
Anime + D&D + math = ?
Eyy you know it B)
well, Anime+Math= Nerd Stuffite.
If you use the Nerd Stuffite on Nerd Stuff (D&D) if will Mega evolve on to Mega-Nerd Stuff
I'd say it is used not additive, but at the same time, so it would be:
Anime x D&D x Math = Nerd Stuff^3
^^
Also, Naofumi's "venom shield" can use two venomous snakes on his opponent, he used that to blackmail someone in the Anime :)
3X
Where X equals Nerd
Eyy man this makes me ?Nerd? cuz i do all of the things + i play WH 40k and wear jacket from Kung Fury
This was real well done, and I might do this next time I play DnD, but you forgot about Zweit Aura, the spell he learned on Cal Mira
I gotta disagree with you,
Paladin, fighting style: protection,
and have them take the Oath of the Ancients
@@loganfrandrup6590 exactly, but this is a bit spoilerish for anime onlys.
@@matejbosela9093 ehh I don't care
Funny enough his level one health is 142! I mention it a few times after the 156... I was working with a lot of files xD
Try making fate characters in dnd, it would be awesome!
HAHAHAHAH ZASSHU!

Oh cool another series I can binge watch on RUclips. Thank you sir
Don't diss the rope shield because it's from that shield that he gets his airstrike shield.
I,too, hope you do a video on Re:Zero soon!
Rem is best waifu.
@ me.
I really liked this video Blaine! Well done- this is the 2nd video I've seen of yours, and I think you've earned another subscriber. I have to disagree with you somewhat on your build- and I will provide my own below, but overall I really enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!
Personal Build Below:
Alright, we all know how hard it is to make characters like their anime counterparts in D&D, but in this case I think I've got a good one for everyone:
Hermit Background( or Criminal if you want to play a more rogue-like Naofumi)
Variant Human(+1 to Intelligence, +1 to Wisdom) - (Feat: Shield Master) - (Skill: Perception / Athletics)
8 Levels Eldritch Knight Fighter
2 Levels Forge Cleric
10 Levels Abjuration Wizard
(15,14,13,12,10,8)
STR: 14
DEX: 10
CON: 12
INT: 15+1
WIS: 13+1
CHA: 8
Feats/ ASI's:
(Eldritch Knight)
1: Shield Master - Obvious Reasons
4: Warcaster - Naofumi is a battle mage; this will keep you from losing your precious concentration spells
6: Heavy Armor Master(+1 STR(15)
8: Tavern Brawler(+1 STR(16) - Naofumi has to improvise with his shield a LOT, this will help deal SOME damage
(Wizard)
4: +2 INT(18)
8: +2 INT(20)
here's my justification - yes the War Wizard's ability to Arcane Deflect is a good one, but a Shield's job is to negate damage dealt to the party- and having a constantly re-charging pool of HP that constantly takes hits for you (aka- the Arcane Ward), and eventually your party - becomes infinitely more useful than being able to gain a +2 against a single attack roll or a +4 on a saving throw, especially when you can't apply that bonus to your allies.
As for the 2 levels in Forge Cleric - Naofumi starts learning to Craft later in the Anime, and I wanted to have something there to mechanically support that. In addition- 2 levels of Cleric gives him access to Cure Wounds, Healing Word, and Shield of Faith- all tools in Naofumi's kit that he can use Wizard spell slots to up cast if need be.
with Eldritch Knight Fighter- I highly recommend getting up to 8th level as soon as possible- the feats are worth it, and the 7th level "War Magic" ability is amazing for tanking when it is paired with "Blade Ward."
Take the "Interception" fighting style from the new Class Feature's UA- and you can reduce incoming damage on a reaction if the target is within 5ft. - use your action to Blade Ward or Dodge, and use your Bonus Action for a shield-bash or a bonus action spell to keep your allies in the fight.
Oh shit cautious hero would be so cool
I am so glad I paused this video and watched the anime before the spoilers.
Also, I ALWAYS carry 50 ft of rope with me just encase.
you get naofumi's starting hp wrong three times after you show it on screen which triggered me alot
^^ Super sorry, I made a note about that in the pinned comments section
I dont even need to watch the video to know i like it
Paladin, Cleric, Druid, even Bard seem like a great fit, BUT WIZARD?????
Yep, going completely rogue on this one.
...
No not 'literally' rogue
My man, Oath of Redemption Paladin has spells that are nearly perfect 1:1 versions of Naofumi’s abilities, and the subclass even focuses on protecting the group like he does.
in the wn, hes a planeswalking, godslaying, immortal, invulnerable god of the shield and defense
Imagine being naofumi after he recovered from depression and you hear about some idiot making his meals tasteless BECAUSE HE WANTS TO BE LIKE YOU XD

You sure Naofumi isn’t a Hexblade Warlock?
I preferred War domain wizard because of the AC bonuses, but that could work too!

picture: *a freaking military tank*
She was sick, so it would be theoretically higher.
Damn you, one night of no sleep and 8 hours of anger fall at your feet.
Are you building him as a character or an npc it seems like you can’t decide
Character builds can realistically be for players or NPCS.
Yep! Although I discuss the game in-depth, a lot of channels go step by step! Try doing a general search on RUclips

For airstrike shield, why not the spell "shield"? And just flavor it as a physical object?
Dragon HearthX Shield is a good spell for him, but Airstrike is used more to protect allies, and shield only works on the caster
