JUST TO CLARIFY! Naofumi starts at 142 health in the anime, not 156! The math at the end is right, I just used the wrong art for that segment.
Also, just a reminder, all of the druid spells we get in this video come from Naofumi's Legendary Shield! He gains the spells just by having it equipped!
    ALSO, Naofumi takes the *'
Moderately/Heavily Armored'* feats so he can use his shield and wear his armor.
Definitely not viable, but that’s Naofumi’s messed up kit for ya.

Actually if it was a game the shield class would have to be baned or nerfed. All the other heros have bad defence and great damage while the shield hero can't be damaged, or at lest should be capable to stop almost any attack. So even if he makes 1 HP of damage he would eventualy win.

@@zarlus8 Start with 1 level in Hexblade Warlock, next take 1 level of Shadow Sorcerer, and all remaining levels are in Oathbreaker Paladin. Easier to justify that multiclass spread if your character starts at level 3 or later, but not impossible.
Because of the Hexblade, you're using Charisma for melee attacks so Strength isn't your attack stat. More CON is nice, but you want CHA to be your top stat.
Then get the best armor you can, a shield, a one-handed weapon, and grab the warcaster feat when you can so you can use spells with your hands full. Shield of Faith and the Shield spell will really help your AC when you need it. Magic shields (+1,+2,etc) also help, but you can get ridiculous without it. Adamantine plate armor will give you the best base AC while making you immune to critical hits, but your DM might hate you if you use it.

If he uses shield spell on reaction, 23 ac. Soon get war caster. Then get the martial adept feat for evasive footwork (coincides with how he dodges) for a potential 29ac. Now get lucky to get rid of those pesky nat 20s. This is a pure wizard build that could use only in game things to make not have more hp but better defense because he blocks above all else. Yeah no I think he would be a stone soul sorcerer. They gain an AC=13+ Constitution modifier, and proficiency with shields. This would also make him a charisma caster, which at first doesn’t make sense but then you remember that intimidation is a charisma skill and at the shield hero has to threaten people just to give him a fair price. Additionally you get access Stone Aegis to help protect your party members from damage. Then to help round out his shield magic you can multi class into lore bard for new spells and bonus proficiencies. Additionally you can take a quick dip into hex blade to get some fancy bonuses, and Eldridge blast which is the best thing ever, though not entirely in character. Next take the Tavern brawler feat to gain proficiency with improvised weapons, aka your shield. It will still only do 1D4 bludgeoning damage which is pretty in character. Additionally this will also give you proficiency with all improvised weapons, like a bottle of weed killer that he uses to kill the plant monster that was destroying a town. Then the inspiring leader feat, because while he starts gruff and intimidating he becomes a good leader, who shows compassion to his allies. I think his level breakdown should look something like this, Sorcerer(stone)=6, Warlock(hex blade)=4, Bard(lore)=10. As fore some of his spells, I would go with shield of faith as air shield.

    • @hollowedprophet2110
      @hollowedprophet2110 4 года назад +5

I've actually sat down to try and make it before the Stone Sorc is exactly what I came up with as the best fit. When I designed him I actually placed his level at around 11 specifically to benefit from the Stone sorc ability gained at that level. tavern Brawler obviously, but I kept his class pure Stone Sorc, allowing me to flavor all his spells cast and his meta magics as his shield casting them, without needing to find a bullshit magical shield. Tavernbrawler keeps your physical attacks fairly weak except when using the level 11 ablity from stone sorc, which can be reflective of how some of his punches have managed to be pretty forceful, but still keeps him relying on others for true consistent damage aside from his shield

That’s a fair choice to keep him pure but then he wouldn’t have any healing spells. I think he would need to take a quick dip into a class in order to get some healing spells. I initially just wanted to get him up to at least lower board level six in order to get magical secrets so that he could use shield of faith. But I couldn’t help myself And took them all the way to 10 to get more magical secrets for more extra spells.

DnD health isn't that directly comparable. DnD goes below 0 health. The health pool in Shield Hero seems to be more traditional video game, so 0 hp is death, but is more realistic so taking damage reduces your capabilities.
Also, everything comes out of the shield. If you are going to include the shield at all to explain anything, the only things Naofumi does that doesn't relate to the shield is what he would have in classes and class levels. So, Expert class, with skills crafting accessories, cooking, alchemy, and magical item crafting. All of these are buffed by his shield but he gained actual skill from doing these things, not just buffs from his shield letting him do things.

I really liked this video Blaine! Well done- this is the 2nd video I've seen of yours, and I think you've earned another subscriber. I have to disagree with you somewhat on your build- and I will provide my own below, but overall I really enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!
    Personal Build Below:
Alright, we all know how hard it is to make characters like their anime counterparts in D&D, but in this case I think I've got a good one for everyone:
Hermit Background( or Criminal if you want to play a more rogue-like Naofumi)
Variant Human(+1 to Intelligence, +1 to Wisdom) - (Feat: Shield Master) - (Skill: Perception / Athletics)
    8 Levels Eldritch Knight Fighter
    2 Levels Forge Cleric
    10 Levels Abjuration Wizard
    (15,14,13,12,10,8)
    STR: 14
    DEX: 10
    CON: 12
    INT: 15+1
    WIS: 13+1
    CHA: 8
    Feats/ ASI's:
    (Eldritch Knight)
1: Shield Master - Obvious Reasons
4: Warcaster - Naofumi is a battle mage; this will keep you from losing your precious concentration spells
    6: Heavy Armor Master(+1 STR(15)
8: Tavern Brawler(+1 STR(16) - Naofumi has to improvise with his shield a LOT, this will help deal SOME damage
    (Wizard)
    4: +2 INT(18)
    8: +2 INT(20)
here's my justification - yes the War Wizard's ability to Arcane Deflect is a good one, but a Shield's job is to negate damage dealt to the party- and having a constantly re-charging pool of HP that constantly takes hits for you (aka- the Arcane Ward), and eventually your party - becomes infinitely more useful than being able to gain a +2 against a single attack roll or a +4 on a saving throw, especially when you can't apply that bonus to your allies.
As for the 2 levels in Forge Cleric - Naofumi starts learning to Craft later in the Anime, and I wanted to have something there to mechanically support that. In addition- 2 levels of Cleric gives him access to Cure Wounds, Healing Word, and Shield of Faith- all tools in Naofumi's kit that he can use Wizard spell slots to up cast if need be.
with Eldritch Knight Fighter- I highly recommend getting up to 8th level as soon as possible- the feats are worth it, and the 7th level "War Magic" ability is amazing for tanking when it is paired with "Blade Ward."
Take the "Interception" fighting style from the new Class Feature's UA- and you can reduce incoming damage on a reaction if the target is within 5ft. - use your action to Blade Ward or Dodge, and use your Bonus Action for a shield-bash or a bonus action spell to keep your allies in the fight.

OOh, that makes some sense. I'm not too familiar with paladin builds, but it fits with the theme of his summoning, and when not specific to a god, are based on raw emotions and ideological conviction, wen he has in spades, plus armor and martial weapon proficiency for his various shield types, smites can be his increased damage in rage mode, and they usually come with buffing and healing magic.
My first instinct was a bard/barbarian multiclass. I think dividing the XP makes more sense cause his stats are supposed to be low relative to the others. But this for sure would work.

    • @PillowOfEvil
      @PillowOfEvil 4 года назад +1

Smites are useless if you aren't going to use a weapon, and thats kind of what "Shield Hero" is all about. Also, protection is meh at best, defense is better and shield master feat kind of conflicts with protection. And then less access to spells.

Interesting take on the #1 Dad. I tried building him myself and ultimately made him a multiclassed Eldritch Knight and Storm Herald Barbarian. Eldritch Knight so he could have his spells and be bonded to the shield, and Storm Herald Barb for the Storm Aura ability of desert that makes it so that when he goes into rage(Rage Shield), anyone close to him takes fire damage like what happened to Raphtalia in the zombie dragon fight.

To make this short, Human variant level 7 Paladin who's hp is 67, Ancient subclass and taking Tavern Brawler and Shield Master feats at lvls 1 and 4. Background would be something that gives proficiency in both Alchemist kit and Natural and if possible medical. Then take Insight and Athletic proficiency from Paladin.
at lvl 1 we take Shield Master and lvl 4 Tavern Brawler, lvl 8 Tough for extra hp, lvl 12 Heavy Armor Master for the -3dmg and levels 16 19 we take con +2
several spells to cast on weapon (in our case shield)
We get healing spell including lay on hands which fits better 10:40
Shield of Faith gives people +2ac ON TOP OF their armors - Mage armor does not give you extra AC if your armor already gives you more, faith of shield does.
You get roots of different kind and can do other cool stuff.
The pest everyone around you will be protected by your auras. They take less dmg from spells (resistance to spell dmg to 10ft away from you to allies) while also giving bonuses to save rolls to all allies.
I would think we also take later our con from 16 to 20 and pick tough feat at level 8 giving us normal 6 + con3 + 16hp from next level up. fromn 67 to 92
leaving the 2 others for +2con +2con . . . if we can get con to 20 other ways you could take heavy armor master or whats that feat -3dmg from nonmagical dmg.
Heavy Armor Master -3 dmg means against dragon you take less dmg -> you can last 1 round more at lvl 20. cs 24 red dragon deals average of 55dmg in 3 melee attacks reducing that by -9 (3 hits) we can say if you have 100hp you survive 2 rounds instead of 1 round :^) the effect is super weak but in the end it adds up around you lasting 1 round longer. you get to take action one round longer :D
    My problems with Wizard:
Wizard's second most important stat is Con, so you would 15in 14con or point buy 15con 15int making con either +2 or +3
You know, Concentration is important we want high con.
Wizard's can't cast any healing spells. Not Protection from Poison. Paladin can do both.
Average D&D 5e campaign is around levels 1 to 10. It is rare to see lvl20 and I don't think the Anime is even close to lvl 15. I would say where the anime ends our party level is between 5 and 10. This would make most sense so we can have more powerful enemies.
Paladin can also cast Shield of Faith which is +2AC on top of the current AC person has. Mage armor is like donning another armor on top of your current one and does not give you extra protection. Sure it is better than leather armor as much as Shield of Faith ;) so Shield of Faith in this case would be better spell which paladin can use.
Another problem is that we probably want to take Shield Master no matter what, but you can't take that unless you are proficient using shields requiring us to take moderedly armored to gain shield proficiency considering we get it from the get go.
Ancients subclass gives us few interesting options as we can cast ensnaring strike which roots enemies and then throw our shield at them to root them. Also our channel divinity works as root if needed preventing enemies from moving like in the anime some shield abilities do.
Creation "The object created must be no larger than a 5-foot cube," welp there is size limit. I don't think there is much for this.
Transformation might be Evil god giving you powers making it be bad idea. You might brake your oath while doing so losing all your powers mean while. These powers are on top of you and I would say you could use your Channel Divinity to provoke help from the Evil god. Ultimate spell being you deal dmg equal to target's max hp or your max hp times two which ever is lower and the target can make the save. You take equal amount dmg as the target and it counts as spell so you take half dmg thanks to magical resistance. Basically you take dmg which is not enough to kill you and you can use it even if you have 1hp left.
There are several ways imo to do this as Paladin better. ^_^
Hope you liked this take of shield hero and my reasoning why Wizard is not good pick (8con? WTF, you need high con for wizard.)

Fun fact: I actually kinda did play an interesting version of Naofumi in one of our recent campaigns, except I could still use my main weapon. And Raphtalia became a Cleric. And I was a fucking psychopath.
This campaign was homebrew heavy, so bear with me.
I was playing a psychopathic fighter with a magic hammer (1d8 blunt damage +2d8 lightning damage, 2d8 blunt +2d8 lightning if I threw it and once I did, it would return to my hand) and then I came across some sort of underground fighting arena where you competed unarmed. Well... I had a magic ability (also homebrew, each PC had one) that gave me a d20 for unarmed damage instead of the standard 1 damage or the d4 with the Tavern Brawler feat. Until I got the magic hammer, it was a viable strategy to just punch damn near anything.
Long story short, I one punched my way through the arena and won their competition. My prize was a magic shield that stuck to my arm and would not come off and the ownership of a small demi human slave girl.... Thankfully not sick, just small and innocent. Which my character found amusing before eventually molding her into my faithful minion that healed me while I mercilessly beat the shit out of everything I came across that the party decided to fight.
We went on to kill an unknowable number of bandits, a metric ass ton of goblins, a few innocent people for shits and giggles while in the wilderness (left Raphtalia behind while killing people because my character was a monster, but also kinda liked his cute little minion), a dragon, the BBEG's guards (whom the bard decided to mutilate horrendously), the BBEG's daughter (whom our tabaxi paladin had been very attached to, unfortunately she was not on our side so she got the hammer to the face until she died), the BBEG (also dead by repeated hammer blows), and then a lich and his several hundred zombies.
By the end of this, I was level 13, could attack 3 times with a ranged weapon based on STR that did up to 4d8 damage total normally not counting my STR modifier of +9 (belt of Storm Giant Strength), had around 120ish HP, had an AC of 23 (+5 from the Shield) and could fly using the shield abilities as well as not take damage from falls and redirect fire based attacks, and even if unarmed, could hit people for up to a d20+9 (doubled if a crit, with improved crit), with a dedicated healer watching my back. I had enough STR that our DM told me not to bother rolling for STR checks most of the time because I could pretty much do whatever without fail.
One time, I got into a bar fight that we took outside and I was joined by the Tabaxi paladin... Our first attack was me throwing him at them and him clothes-lining all 10 or so guys at once before I just picked one guy up and started beating the other guys with him.
Max damage with one attack with the hammer would be 32+9=41, with a crit it would be 82. I could do that 3 times a turn, 4 if I used action surge. 82x4=328 maximum damage with 4 crits. At a max range of 60 feet.
Or, I could just punch them for 29x2=58, 58x4=240 max damage.
Our campaign ended because our DM literally ran out of ideas on what to throw at us. He did the math... We could legitimately kill a Tarrasque quickly, IIRC he said in just a couple of rounds because I could throw so much damage at it so quickly and still remain really difficult to hit by flying around out of reach.

He looked normal but was immune to fire and had extraordinary physical power. He wore a fake Ring of Fire Resistance and a fake Girdle of Fire Giant Strength. I added his Fire Giant abilities were curse-suppressed until a certain level.
Also, like you, I allow all my players to translate their favorite media guy into AD&D as long as they give me a list of what they can do and the source material so I can translate it into AD&D gaming relative to the level we are playing. My players who wanted I-Man, various Terminators, Constantine (both Marvel Comics and the movie), Hellboy, Castlevania Belmonts (easiest translation ever), various vampires and lycanthropes, Star Trek guys, Star Wars guys, Gunslingers, and horror movie monster in hero form. Most of the character builds were easy, something I give back to the player as something his character gets. AD&D is a fantasy game, so fantasy things are easy if it's not a power-monger thing. The others are things I involved a growth tree that they make choices based upon level. One player saw my growth tree for what he wanted as his Batman character, he'd not have all of his abilities and perks until he was level 50 and had to maintain an INT score of 21 or higher all the time and he had to use my stat-rolling program until he rolled all the stats at 18 save for CHA, which had to be at least 12. Because he picked the hard path, he ended up finding my hiding path of needing to have an 18 CHA. Once he rolled all 18's, he sacrificed CHA to boost his INT to 21. That's a 1pt improvement by decreasing another by 2pts. Another who complained was a vampire player. To get the vampire he wanted, he'd have to be level 20. He wanted to be Lestat from Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned. I had Living Vampires in my campaign as a player character race. To be a vampire of his level, he'd have to pick in the development tree to take all the accelerate abilities, all of the sensuality abilities, undeath status, attacking while accelerating, all dodge abilities, all increased senses abilities, the buried regeneration ability, and the shared feeding ability. To be fair, he was the lame vampire. I created that tree on the fly with the Legacy of Kain video games, Castlevania (all of them), all Dracula movies, the only good Lost Boys movie (the first), Salem's Lot, Nosferatu, Vampire's Kiss (not a real vampire movie but a madness movie, it did inspire me), History of Vlad the Impaler (history of brutality and disease panic that inspired stories), Fright Night movies, etc. That gamer could have developed the character early to be a really good character in abilities and powers. He had options. No, he held out because he wanted Lestat. Summarizing. He wanted Lestat. He could have had Alucard (NES and later other video games) far earlier and developed his abilities. He could have had Blade (Marvel Comics) on all levels and bolstered him progressively. Nope. He wanted to be Lestat. The campaign did not progress long enough for his character to become a vampire like Lestat.
And another... oh... I am ranting. Okay, you got the Shield Hero out of the way. I applaud how you did it, excellent to the max. I actually want you to submit this guy to the AD&D guys as a character build. Players who love the anime will struggle in the beginning and appreciate the abilities later.

To be fair, I’m pretty sure the rope shield was what unlocked air strike shield in the first place (don’t quote me, I’d have to rewatch it to confirm), so technically the rope shield IS one of his best shields, seeing on how it gave him his first (and by far most used) shield skill.

I'm currently playing a character in 5e based on naufumi. I went an oath of redemption paladin with a dip into cleric. It gives the armour, the defense fighting style and got the shield of missile attraction. It is definitely just inspired, but it means I can protect others, force disadvantage and even use the 'rebuke the violent' ability which is really fun.
And I gave myself the iron bands of binding to act as the shield prison.
