Great recap! I don't know what is more amazing, Kiptum's world record or Sifan's range? She remains in the absolute top of the world elite on every distance from 1.500m to marathon. Incredible!
I know! She’s so amazing. 1500m to Marathon. Kind of like Kipchoge. Even Bekele. They did that too. And all I’d consider to be among the greatest of all time
Most of the greats started at track and then moved to Marathon. Ingebrigtsen said that his goal is to break the Marathon record some day so that will be interesting to see when he does the transition.
They did. But this is possibly one of Kipchoge’s legacies: he put marathon on the map and now we see young runners going straight to marathon. Other examples are Molly Seidel and Connor Mantz, and in Berlin Kipchoge was almost getting caught by two debutants aged 24 and 21. I for one am really curious to see the impact of this and if these young runners will be able to compete until their late 30s as Kipchoge, Berkeley and Haile did. Marathon is a tough sport to do competitively for 15-18 years.
@@DavidB-zi3lg I would expect that the shift to younger runners starting out in marathon will lead to faster times, and earlier retirement. But the question will be does it just cut a year or two off or does it beat people up a lot sooner? The training load is the same whether 5k 10k or marathon, so maybe there will not be much difference
I think younger runners coming into the marathon events will make a big difference. Your peak strengths and endurances are during your early 20s and many great runners run track first until their 30s and switch to marathon. Imagined if they ran marathon before track? Jacob, Hassan, Chetepgh, or Kipsang would run fast times in marathons if they focused more on the event. Like hybrid runners for speed and distances.
Good point. Yeah, traditionally, the marathon is an older Runners sport. That’s definitely changed in the last two decades, but it’s accelerating right now even. There are young runners, debuting in the marathon, we didn’t really see that just a decade ago, and certainly not two and three decades ago.
I can always count on you for a good recap to the latest marathon. What a great race! I'm so excited to continue seeing what is possible in this sport!
Yes, this is a good video commentary. ... as long as kelvin dont get burnout too early in his young career, i think marathon racing is up. That kelvin is such a heroic marathoner. Tks 4 good video.
Great review of an amazing marathon with such incredibly talented runners. Des Linden's American master record was awesome too! Her 2:27:35 broke Deena Kastor's record set in 2015.
Thank you for your Chicago Marathon coverage! Liked and Subscribed, as my first time visiting your channel. I have a few thoughts about two unbelievable human marathoners, Eliud and Kelvin. I do not think Eliud Kipchoge will fade away, for perhaps a few years yet. He and his team have set a Marathon template that encourages others to use. The synchronicity of these two, Kiptum and Kipchoge, running a human endurance clinic for us to marvel at while sensationally promoting The Marathon, shows us "No Human is Limited." - Eliud Kipchoge. Kelvin Kiptum is a fine example of Eliud's quote. Next year is going to be absolutely thrilling for the Marathon, with the Olympic Games in Paris the Showcase Highlight. This is one reason: Only three men in history have won *two* Olympic Games Marathon Gold Medal victories; Abebe Bikila, Waldemar Cierpinski and Eliud Kipchoge. In 2024, Eliud Kipchoge has the very rare opportunity to become the only man in history to win three. What the final Olympic Games Marathon results might be are everyone's best guess, but there are at least two men walking around on the planet who have a really good idea. I am looking forward to next year with growing anticipation.
Watched your recap . Interestingly you didn't highlight Ruth Chepngetich , found the recap a bit biased. I had to actually confirm the woman who finished second
Nice video. You totally missed out on the defending champion in the women's race, that battle between Sifan and Chepngetich was epic and correction, she finished second not Sisson.
Where do you watch this and other marathons? I subscribed to Flo Track a while back, but it's either poor quality (Boston no sound) or "not available in your area" (Chicago). Today, I got up at 5 am. to watch live (because otherwise, I have to avoid all media to avoid spoilers, like "Kiptum Smashes World Record") but got that message of unavailability. It took me until 20 minutes in before i could figure out live coverage (by then it was just tge two runners up front in either M or F. Had to watch it through NBC Chicago News via Peacock, but this coverage was too much on spectators and celebrations and not enough on the runners. Seems like people are able to watch and make reviews. I just can't find out where.
@@runelitecoach Was it the Local Chicago NBC 5 coverage? That's what I ended up watching, but it was like local news coverage and lots of interviews of spectators with quizes and "who are you here to watch?"
How is it possible? Well a 2:08 guy which Kiptum is very much legit can take say a PED schedule that has been shown to increase performance 5% and wear a shoe that gives another 1-5% depending on the persons response and boom there is your 2:00 marathoner.
Hey :) Not sure what your story of that awesome 3:27 has to do with doping. I mean some runners can run 1200m in 2:50 and not be on the ground in agony. So if you were it just means that you ran hard, but doesn't say much about what you're capable of with fully dedicated training. Are they doping? i really can't say. I think that it's likely that many top runners do what they need to to keep up with the rest of the field. If everyone dopes, then they'd have to too. But I think that it's in the grey area and that the thought is that "if they're within WADA guidelines, that they're not cheating" But who knows?... You can read "The Longest Race" to get some idea in to what elite distance runners may be doing....
As a former ametur cyclist I tend to get suspicious of new earas. What are they doing radically different than before in training, nutrition etc? Is ther an objective reason why marathon records are being broken left and right? Perhaps Im just a killjoy, but I rather like to be clear eyed and keep a cool head about these things. Why is this happening all of a sudden?
I hear you on that. Certainly is possible. But records in these races have been being broken consistently for 6 decades. Just how it is. I truly believe that Kipchoge is clean and if he can run 2:01, why can’t others? Good point
You ask a good question. One we all must ask. Track and field is about tests not about times. (Shoes all runners can buy the same shoes. Times do show that everyone who runs is running faster. That can be shoes. But most importantly more people are running and there are more devices recording times at a lower cost. Thé Greeks recorded who won the day as everyone did before the stop watch. Times improve when time is messured diffrently. Add 10th, add 100th, add 1000th....of a second and recorded times will improve forever. That is why the truest messure is how many runners are there) Times can only be real if contests are fair. Tests prove fairness. Any one who has questions ought to ask that all tests be published. They may well be in the public domain? I will try to find where the tests are published. Lastly, that 30 seconds means that 30 seconds will be shaved off every one's times. Here is How. All watches up date by 30 seconds. Age rate calculateurs update 30 seconds. And every living humans expectations for any movement updates by 30 seconds. He did not set the world record. We set a new world standard! Records are meaningless. Standards are everything!
New shoe technologies have made running and breaking world records more easily. I do believe the cheaters are getting caught and the ones that been running for many years are clean. Technology In nutrition, recovery, shoes, and training science has made a big difference.
I believe its due to shoe technology. You are seeing a huge increase in amateur times as well (record 11,000 Boston Qualifiers not making the cut off). Shoes can cut several minutes off a marathon time, easy. With this "last few years" large number of people doing better all of a sudden, I think it has to be shoes (I know carbon plates have helped ME personally drop my marathon PR considerably).
I been running all my life. Never ran a race where I wasnt in pain the whole way and didnt know if i would make it. Always was told by coaches that is how it suppose to feel@@runelitecoach
Was Ruth Chepngetich name so hard to mention, the third fastest woman before this and two times defending champion? You totally missed it and compared Sifan win with Sisson who finished almost 10 minutes after her😮
The focus here was on Kiptum. Ruth ran superbly well of course and deserves to be mentioned, but wasn’t the subject of this video. I mentioned all other winners of course. But this was not a comprehensive biography of the whole field.
6th at the Valencia half in 2020. 8th in 2021. Then jumps to marathon and all the sudden he's the goat. He's running 180 miles per week with no coach, new found talent, and staying healthy. That's drugs. Pretty obvious. iykyk

I agree on the drug testing perhaps, but there are all sorts of ways to use PEDs and get them out of your system before testing. Only way would be ro test everyone really frequently (like once a month or something), since even random yesting is not catching it all. I hate that there is seemingly so much PEDs being used, just not sure how to really stop it. As for limiting shoe technology... maybe. I mean, you can't have springs or have them made of "flubber" (old Disney movie), i know there are already limits on stack height, but if shoes fall within the rules and everyone has access to the same shoes... why not? I mean they are not limiting Marcel Hug's $100k (or whatever it cost) carbon fiber high tech wheelchair withba whole team dedicated to making it faster... and DEFINITELY not everyone has access to that. I get your point though... gotta make things fair. I just think people will push the limits of what is fair until they get caught or someone says its not allowed.
